Anyone care about British basketball?

To my surprise, over forty of the names listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Basketball/Unreferenced BLPs are figures associated with the British Basketball League. Does anyone here know/care about this league? If you think these articles are worth keeping, point me in the direction of some good sources I could use. Thanks! Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see why this page should be part of the UK project. I can see why the page might be tagged as part of the Slovenia wikiproject. Adding that tag to the page is fair enough. Removing it is also fair, if the remover then starts a discussion on the talk page. Then everybody who watches the page can join the discussion, and a consensus is reached. Isn't that how WP is meant to work? (I would expect an administrator to know that). Mass update of place of birth

Recently user:SE7 has made mass updates to the place of birth of a large number of people and I disagree with these edits and would appreciate the input of other edits. My main problem is adding un-necessary addition locations, overlinking and using England when the UK would be more appropriate. The discussion is ongoing at my talk page. Thanks. I disagree with the view that User:SE7 is over-linking. Since this is not a paper encyclopedia, there is no need to worry about overly wordly statements. Besides, arguably user:SE7 is just clarifying and formalising their places of births to avoid confusion with other places of the same name (e.g. in the USA, there are several locations called Cambridge as can be observed here Cambridge (disambiguation) and/or historical reasons (e.g. Richmond, Surrey prior to 1965 compared with Richmond, Greater London post 1965). Therefore, if this is done on a few peoples' pages, then it may as well be done merely for consistency sake. As a so called "free encyclopedia", it should be our aim to make every aspect of it as accurate as possible, which is why I disagree with your view. DMJohnston (talk) 20:09, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

Have to disagree with the use of the UK. For locations the country (England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland) is more appropriate to indicate which part of the UK applies. The inclusion of counties though is problematical and the county appropriate to the time of the event should be used rather than the current county. That is the reason that many locations in infoboxes deliberately have the county missing. Keith D (talk) 13:59, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Having taken a quick look at the discussion, it seems to me that issues arising from SE7's edits need to be looked at on a case-by-case basis. In some there seems to be unnecessary overlinking, in others there seems to be a perfectly reasonable desire to correct historical misinformation (Birkenhead was in Cheshire, not Merseyside, before 1974, for example). The problem is often that there is a lack of articles on "historical counties", because of the odd view expressed by some editors (in the past?) that current local government boundaries outweigh everything else. Strawberry

Hi, As our growing 18-vehicle bus operator, Strawberry, has no entry, I have added us to the Operator lists under our correct title of Strawberry (NOT Strawberry Buses/Strawberry Travel). However Wikipedia has understandably auto-linked this to a page about the Strawberry plant. If it is possible to create a Strawberry bus operator stub I would be pleased to provide/enter info for it. I've altered the link in the list to Strawberry (bus operator), so that's where your new article can go; you can then put a hatnote on the Strawberry article for the benefit of anyone looking for the bus operator. The trick though right from the off is to make sure that even the initial stub incontrovertably establishes the notability of the company, which means mentions in independent reputable sources. British Isles

The United Kingdom Census 2011 is topical at the moment. New Navbox

I have drafted the {{Heritage protection in the United Kingdom}} navbox template, aiming to bring together scheduled monuments, listed buildings, monuments records, etc across the UK. AONBs don't really belong on a heritage template, but they belong on a to a related one for convervation designations (National Parks, AONB, SAC, RAMSAR, NNR). The difference being typically (in England) English Heritage is the responsible agency for heritage sites and Natural England for conservation sites, with the equivalent organisations elsewhere.

I agree, and have said so at the template talk page. The English Heritage/Natural England (and Historic Scotland/SNH) distinction might be useful in defining boundaries for the template. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 10:39, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

Jonathan Sumption and the Supreme Court

There is a quite circumstantial rumour that Jonathan Sumption has been appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. Apparently there were many tweets about this on Thursday, and a significant blog post; and yesterday (Friday) there was a story in The Times about it. I don't read the Times and the article is behind a paywall. If anyone has a reliable source that this is all true, please update the page (I deleted an unsourced addition shortly after it was posted). Postcode maps

IV postal area

I've been working with the OS Code-Point Open product, which utilises data from the Royal Mail PAF. This is freely licensed, but I'm concerned that I might be doing original research (so making the maps unusuable).

The product includes a point location for every postcode, but it does not attempt to indicate the area covered by any postcode. I've had to manually interpolate the boundary lines between adjacent districts. My method ensures that every postcode unit is shown as being in the correct postcode district, but in the remote areas there may be several miles between delivery points (eg the Glen Affric area). This means there may be significant errors in where I've drawn the lines, and this would show up in the image. For instance, there are noticeable differences in the area boundary compared to this map.

Photo request

I hope this is mainstream GLAM. I have been working just now on cleaning up Humfray Cole: Cole was a leading Elizabethan instrument maker, with 26 instruments surviving. His work is in the British Museum, National Maritime Museum, and at the University of St Andrews. Since instruments are 3D, using photos from the Web is generally copyvio. People can judge for themselves if the discussion was 'long' or not Kleinzach. In my opinion it wasn't remotely a long one (esp for Wikipedia!), but it did have a little repetition perhaps - but that is disagreement for you. All discussion is going to be tedious if you simply want to delete the project. The point we both agree on is that discussion on the project's future has had relatively low attendence. There is a c.1620 painted frieze in the Upper Reading Room of the Bodleian Library, I'm assured, with 202 portrait heads. I'm after a list of who these are, for reasons arising from an article. I've uploaded a full set of relief maps for the English counties, and the Welsh and Scottish equivalents. I've added the Cumbria map to the relevant template and the results can be seen to the right.

The convention for location maps is to use political/road maps for human geography (eg towns) as the relief details on such a map amount to chartjunk, the human elements are more relevant there. Relief maps are prettier, but can be less informative for that sort of thing.

Which is a more informative background for a locator of Wembley Stadium: File:Greater London UK location map 2.svg or File:Greater London UK relief location map.jpg? Examples like are why I would not support relief maps for everything.--Nilfanion (talk) 12:45, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Really? I'd consider the M25 and the edge of the built up area to be much more relevant to locations in London than the northern edge of the South Downs, which is the only topographic feature I can readily identify. Given that someone who has never been to London or Cumbria would not understand what was the difference between the blue, green and black lines, there seems to be an assumption that what features are on the map give some context to the red dot. Unless you actually have a handy key to the maps they are pretty uninformative. The relief maps on the other hand are very informative about location, and the administrative boundary overlays are reasonably simple to understand. Fmph (talk) 13:12, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

I'd imagine most UK readers would recognise a motorway on a map when they see it - the "blue line = motorway" is conventional. Adding a meaningful legend to the file description is sensible, and I can address that. With regards to structures in London, the relief detail itself really adds nothing (pure eye-candy, irrelevant to subject), meaning a plain political map contains the important info (the borders) even more clearly.

In any case, as things stand both relief and road map variants are available for use - you can freely use either. Longstanding consensus, for right or wrong, has been to prefer road maps over plain political ones for UK articles. As the UK relief maps are only just available, there is no consensus regarding what UK articles should use relief maps. Its worth noting the global convention of political for human, relief for physical. I'd prefer to not use relief maps for things that primarily relate to humans.--Nilfanion (talk) 22:21, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Surely the maps should be informative to more than just UK readers? This is not just uk.wikipedia.org! In fact, I'd suggest the opposite is true. Most UK readers will already know where Manchester or Salford is. The maps should be there to help those from outside the UK who don't have any context to work from. And the idea that what gives context is the prevalence of motorway junctions is ludicrous. The relief maps are much richer visually and the context much simpler for the eye to read. I've never liked many of the 'administrative' maps. But those relief maps are great. Fmph (talk) 06:23, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Can you point to a list of these or indicate how to search for them? To use the hills example above how would I find the best map to use on Quantock Hills or Mendip Hills which currently uses the UK outline map in the infobox but also has File:Mendip Hills Map.png or Somerset Levels which uses File:Map of Somerset Levels.png (which you made for the article). Are you suggesting File:Somerset UK relief location map.jpg for all of them & how could an editor indicate on the map which part related to a range of hills or more specific area?— Rod ^talk 22:32, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Ok - sorry for not making clearer. I haven't yet set up a proper category on Commons - I'll do that when upload is done. For now, you can find the maps in my recent uploads. Now in Category:Topographic maps of the United Kingdom. The current set is for every English county, Welsh county borough and Scottish council area. England and Wales national maps will be next.

They will be readily usable via the {{location map}} series of templates, just the same as you would call the existing political maps, only change is addition of a relief=yes parameter.

Some location map-type templates will need modifying to use these new maps (such as Template:Infobox UK place, as they don't allow calls to the relief parameter.

The {{Geobox}} series of templates need a different calibration setup, copying the coordinate data from Template:Location map United Kingdom Cumbria to Template:Geobox locator UK Cumbria ought to work there.

I'm not sure which templates will need modifying to make full use of these, but I suspect its several!

A pushpin locator cannot readily replace a highlighted area map, you need to create an overlay image to go over the background. Geobox templates can handle this - for example File:Greater Fatra (SVK) - location map.svg over File:Slovakia demis.png produces the result at Template:Geobox/sample.--Nilfanion (talk) 22:55, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Merge of Mandate Palestine into British Mandate for Palestine

In 2010, the article "Mandate Palestine" was forked out of "British Mandate for Palestine" article, becoming an identical article since. Due to the almost complete overlap (technically both articles describe a former Mandatory geopolitical entity of Palestine under British rule, which has only one article in other languages) and ongoing confusion (some insisted that "British Mandate for Palestine" is more the name of a 1922 document and not a country), i propose to merge Mandate Palestine into British Mandate for Palestine, and make an additional article named British Mandate for Palestine (document) to prevent confusion between the document and the geopolitical entity. Britsh Gas move/disambig

The page British Gas was a disambig page, with the article about the company at British Gas plc. It had been like this since 2006. A few days ago, a recently registered user (Fox_starfish) did a cut and paste move, to move the article over the disambig. This was reverted, but they have repeated the move. Assistance needed identifying Great Britain water polo players

The Australia women's national water polo team recently played (and have two more) test matches against the Great Britain women's national water polo team. It would be great if some one could create an article about the Great Britain team. At three of the matches, some videos and pictures were taken. It would be fantastic if some one from Great Britain could identify the players and edit the descriptions of the photos to say who they are. The women's team qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics and would have qualified even with out the free pass because of being the host.

If some one from the UK could look at the pictures and try to determine who they are based on the links provided, that would be fantastically helpful. I know there are a few people in the UK who want to try to get Olympic related coverage for British sport improved so in the future, Brits could have a chance at getting press passes to attend (2012 out of the question). Getting more pictures and labeling them and using the pictures, creating articles and telling sport federations you're doing this can help. There are Brits who would prefer Australians improve content related to them. If you are unable or unwilling to identify the individuals yourself, could some one in GB please give Great Britain Water Polo a call and ask for their assistance in identifying members of their national side? I was under the impression several members of WM-UK were at one point actively seeking to try to get press passes for Wikipedians and Wikimedians to attend the Olympic Games. Given that situation, it is rather disappointing that no one is able to identify players or call up the national association and ask for their assistance. This type of work makes a good case study to encourage women's organisations's to get involved with Wikimedia projects. Keenly sad to see a fantastic opportunity to improve female British related content related to one of the biggest events in the country this year not happen during Women's History Month. :( --LauraHale (talk)

CAMRA was the original name of the Campaign for Real Ale article, until it was moved in December 2005‎, and a redirect was left behind. In Feb this year a user created a disamb page, offering readers the choice of going to Campaign for Real Ale or Canberra Academy of Music and Related Arts. The redirect was restored under WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, and a hatnote placed on Campaign for Real Ale, pointing to Canberra Academy of Music and Related Arts. Another user has objected to the restoration of the redirect. Evidence was then provided of the high traffic to Campaign for Real Ale, and the low traffic to Canberra Academy of Music and Related Arts via CAMRA; evidence has also been provided for the high global visibility and recognition of the CAMRA acronym with the Campaign for Real Ale. Just to be clear what has been suggested, by an editor who feels he is not getting his own way, is not a UK manual of style but a style manual which would be used to remove Northern Ireland from the current WP:IMOS. British Library Wikipedian in Residence

Hi all!

I've just started as the Wikipedian in Residence at the British Library; I'll be here for six months, until the end of October. I'm still in the process of settling in and meeting with people here to discuss possible projects, but if you've any suggestions for collaboration, please do let me know.

• World War I Editathon, 16 June - organised jointly with JISC
• GLAM-WIKI 2012, 14-15 September - conference hosted by WMUK and the British Library

British, English, etc, in descriptions, categories, etc

Just now i have asked WikiProject England (WP England talk: British, English, etc ...) much about the use of "British", "English", etc, in reference to persons --England and persons seeming the best place to start. Skimming the noticeboard I see nothing similar among the agenda here, except tangential and inactive BISLES. But I feel sure that you know where this has been discussed a lot.

Here are a couple of quotations from my long post WP England talk: British, English, etc ....

Not sure

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this in, but I'm willing to get rebuked, so here it goes: I have just recently noticed that Talk:Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji is not related in any way to this project. Is this justified? I'm also unsure if Sorabji could fall within the scope not only of this project, but also WikiProject England. Sorabji's mother was English, his father was a Parsi from Bombay. However, Sorabji denied the English ancestry of his mother and had close to zero affinity for English/British culture.

Given Sorabji's biography, he may be of interest to the Dorset and Essex projects. As a person, he is known mainly for his compositions, and less so for his music criticism.

I'm concerned about that article. An established editor - User:Botteville - has been expanding the article, and including some references, but has been doing so using language that I find difficult to follow. It may be that there is simply a need for copy-editing - basically, the article is becoming more difficult to understand - but it would help if some extra pairs of eyes could be diverted over that way. What's the rule for doubling the final consonant?

American_and_British_English_spelling_differences#Doubled_consonants did not help this reader find out what I want to know, and no one answers this question there. Please help me write in those articles that are in BrEng:

I understand that in AmEng, we double the final consonant if we stress that syllable; if not, not. It's simple. For example, water-watered, but occur-ocurred. Or repel-repelled, but travel-traveled. Credo, OED, Times archive etc available from home

I'd like to remind UK editors that your local public library almost certainly offers you access to a range of seriously useful online resources which you can access from any pc, eg at home or work. Lancashire County Library's offering includes the Times archive 1785-1985, the British Library's 19th century British Newspapers, UK Newsbank (recent and current national and regional newspapers), the full Encyclopedia Britannica, Oxford English Dictionary, Grove Music, Grove Art, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford Reference (compilation of umpteen reference books), Credo (similar) and more, and as far as I know it's typical. All you need is your library ticket number. There are also a handful of resources which can only be used in a library, such as Ancestry.com family history database.

This page has a link ("Find out...") to a spreadsheet which shows which Oxford resources are available in which libraries, and Credo has a facility to check whether your local library offers it, but beyond that just find your library's website and look for a heading like "Online reference library", "24 hour library", etc. If you aren't a member, you may even be able to join online. Or pop into your local branch / hunt down a mobile library / give them a ring and ask about it.

UK public libraries have had these services available for a few years, but the message doesn't seem to have got across to a surprising number of lively-minded people, who perhaps associate public libraries with kids books and fiction only. Somerset County Council has most of those sites, but not the British Library's 19th century British Newspapers, nor Credo. Ancestry.com family history database can also be used in their libraries. Try joining Bristol? Libaries don't seem to insist on "living or working in the area" as they used to. It seems pretty hit and miss as to who subscribes to what: I heard at an evening class in Leeds that Lancs had the 19C newspapers, joined Lancs library online at 11pm, and by 11.15pm was looking at the Leeds Mercury adverts for when my street was first built. I've joined Westminster libraries for on-line Times access because my home borough (Wandsworth) only gives access in its libraries. I had to visit a Westminster branch to pick up my card, though, but I didn't have to be living or working in the City of Westminster to join. The "libraries admin" site I use is Libraries West, which means I can borrow from Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, Somerset and South Gloucestershire and use The Times digital achive at home, but my card is Somerset libraries. English caste?

Editors on this WikiProject may be interested in the ongoing RfC on Talk:Caste. The article lists England as a region that has historically had a caste system, along with other countries, claims which some editors have found controversial. Editors critical of the current article have argued that the article has become a WP:COATRACK used to push the view that the caste system is not linked to Hinduism or India, while others have defended the article's portrayal of the caste as a universal phenomenon. The input of editors familiar with English history would be most helpful in this discussion. Was English society a caste? Removal of Greens and BNP from info box for European Parliament election, 2009 (United Kingdom)

Both parties only got 2 seats, in the past when another party only got 3 seats, they were not included due to the big difference in seats. For European Parliament election, 1999 (United Kingdom) a good judgement call was made not to include UKIP, as they only got 3 seats. This time in 2009 The Greens and BNP have been included when they are far behind the other parties. This is inconsistent. The summary box is for summarising the headline result, those parties with a significant number of seats. 2 is not a significant number by any stretch of the imagination, besides the fact it's less than 3 and we've already said no to 3. Training event for UK Wikimedians

Wikimedia UK is committed to supporting our volunteers and to encourage them to teach others how to edit Wikipedia, we are running a weekend training workshop that will take place on the weekend of 23–24 February in Newcastle. Literary articles and Wikiproject UK

I do not know the procedure for this wikiproject, which is why I am inquiring... I have noticed that some literary articles are attached to national wikiprojects (Queen of Spades to Russia, for instance). Does the same hold true for Wikiproject UK? I am asking as I have recently got the article on She up to GA and plan to take it to FA review shortly, but am just dotting the i's and crossing the t's. Should this article be linked to this project, or does this project prefer only to keep to historical, political, etc. articles?

Wikipedian in Residence: Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum in London is advertising for a Wikipedian in Residence, working jointly there and at the Science Museum next door; it's a paid post for four months, and applications are open until 10th February. I've worked with Ed Baker at the NHM to define the scope of the program, and it looks really promising - there's some real opportunities for interesting projects here. Sub-dividing honours categories

We currently have a group of categories for recipients of British honours, such as Category:Commanders of the Order of the British Empire which has 2,909 members. I propose that we subdivide them, either by year:

or by annual lists:

Category:Commanders of the Order of the British Empire n the 2012 Queen's Birthday list

Category:Commanders of the Order of the British Empire in the 2013 new year list

I don't think there's any benefit to splitting by NY/Birthday (etc) honours - we have individual lists, though, which makes more sense. We're unlikely to have exact years to hand for a lot of the early ones, so perhaps splitting by century/decade in the first instance is a good start? Andrew Gray (talk) 21:19, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi all,

Just to let you know that the Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums are advertising for a Wikipedian in Residence (announcement). It's a funded post, part-time through spring and early summer, based in Newcastle (so may well suit a student). Applications are open until 4th March. They're particularly interested in the prospect of someone wanting to work with the shipbuilding & industrial history collections, and digitising some of the material they have in their archives.

Categorizing

How does one categorize events that have taken place in a certain place in only one of the four Home Nations?

Let's say that some kind of international sports event took place in Manchester. Should it be categorized as "International foo competitions hosted by England" or "International foo competitions hosted by Great Britain" or "International foo competitions hosted by the United Kingdom"?

Does one use the "lowest common denominator" (in this case England)?

I think it depends somewhat on what the event is. If it's something like the Commonwealth Games, where England competes individually, then "hosted by England" would make sense; we also do this for the 2003 UEFA Champions League Final - even though it's a club event, "England" is the level associated with football. Were the Olympics in Manchester, however, they would probably be "hosted by the United Kingdom" (we use the term GB for the Olympics, but it's the UK that actually contributes, including NI athletes); Andrew Gray (talk) 12:32, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

County navboxes on archaeological site articles?

A newly-registered editor has created a flurry of stubs about standing stones etc, and has added the ceremonial county infobox to them all (example). Is that appropriate? The stubs have a few other problems which I've raised on his/her talkpage. I don't know whether they plan to create stubs for every site listed in The Modern Antiquarian. Wikipedian in Residence: National Library of Scotland

I'm delighted to be able to tell people about a new Wikipedian in Residence post at the National Library of Scotland - I've helped work to set this up, and I think there's a real potential for doing great things with the NLS and its collections. It's a paid post, full-time for four months, though this may possibly be negotiable to a longer period at part time - it's worth asking. Honour crimes in the United Kingdom

It seems there is enough material for an article [5] [6] [7] [8]. These source have statics, opinion polls, notable cases, etc. Currently there are a couple of WP:PERMASTUBs in Category:Honor killing in Europe about the some of the more mediatized cases of honor killings in the UK. Lists of listed buildings: harmful edits

Loss of links and disambiguation

I'm concerned that good-faith edits (hundreds of them) by User:Nev1, relating to WikiLovesMonumnts in the UK (example), have i) used date templates where they're not appropriate and ii) lost lots of existing wikilinks, including disambiguation, which other editors are now being asked to replace ("The 'title' may need wikilinking to a suitable article name").

We may need a mass roll-back (after which the edits can be reinstated in better shape); or a bot to do cleanup.

In the vast majority of cases the lists consisted of just a list of linked names. The new tables include more information, which directly benefits our readers, and links to the English Heritage database which acts as a reference. Ideally links would be included, as can be seen at Grade I listed buildings in Bristol. The community are certainly not being forced to add links. I have been doing a lot of the work myself for the Welsh lists and certainly believe it enhances the list. However, we are asking for help. If I'm to add links, do due diligence to ensure there are no ambiguous links, and add photos it will take a lot of time. Already people have started chipping in, and have been a tremendous help. You're replying to what I did not write. I did not say the community were being "forced" to add links; I said that they're being asked to re-add links that you have removed. Wikipedia at its best does not involve you deliberately breaking hundreds of links and then crowd-sourcing repairs which should never have been necessary. I would have liked to have retained the original links, but that was ultimately not programmatically feasible within the available time for WLM. I am however making efforts to restore links that existed before, both programmatically and by hand -- a process that will also create new links where no page existed before. The first phase (links to churches) ought to occur over the next couple of days. The second phase (all other links) may take longer. Just commenting on the mass rollback idea. The trouble with Nev1's edits is that they disrespected the work of the many editors who had spent so much time tracking down and inserting wikilinks, and the mass destruction took place without any obvious signs of consensus, which is unusual for such radical acts of good-faith trashing. However, we have ended up with lists that are more informative and offer more scope for further improvement. I've reinstated the Eden links within Cumbria and found photos on Commons, and I see others have been doing the same elsewhere. All of this takes time. A mass roolback at this stage would compound the sin because it would be undoing all the repair work that has taken place since the invasion. --Northernhenge (talk) 10:56, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Fair points Northernhenge. I'm doing the same at Grade I listed buildings in Derbyshire. In that case Nev1's change was harmless, indeed positive, since before the change it was a very sparse list with no details beyond the name of the structure (although unbeknown to Nev1 I was intermittently preparing a more expansive version in a sandbox). Had the article been more complete I'd have had less sympathy. I do have issues with the chosen columns of the table though:

• is the listing date really that important?
• "completed" is rather simplistic and meaningless for buildings that have been adapted, restored and extended many times over the centuries
• why would anyone want to sort by NHLE number?.

I'd have fewer columns and lump some of the information into a Notes column (similar handmade lists have had a Notes column that provides a space for interesting context and additional detail, e.g. Grade I listed churches in Derbyshire; my own incomplete attempt included the NHLE number in this column User:Dave.Dunford/DerbyshireGradeI). Also I don't like the non-standard centred columns or small font - I've expressed these views in the template's Talk page but have not had a response. I do agree that there doesn't seem to have been much attempt to gain consensus, discuss possible approaches or consider precedents; although I note the need for urgency, I don't think WLM justified such a radical change, though it may be too late, as Northernhenge says, to roll it back. NRHP comparison

I would like to ask people to be friendly and work toward a solution. Having build multiple of these list systems and as one of the people behind the monuments database, I would like to provide some feedback

• Creating new lists is easy compared to updating existing lists
• Take a look at {{NRHP header}} and {{NRHP row}}. Been around for quite some time
• You want to add an article field and probably try to populate it with the contents of the old version
• Can you use the iso format in date_listed instead of another template? The embedded template will screw up the harvesting (check NRHP how you can parse it)
• Can you include the ISO 3166-2:GB code in the header template like for example in this page? This is used in the monuments database for navigation country -> county -> location, etc.
• I would expect links in the location and type columns.

The issue at hand is the removal of links, including disambiguation, from content. A solution to that certainly needs to be found, and quickly. I'm not sure how your comment helps with that
Turning to your other points: I don't see any one being unfriendly here. The NHRP handling of ISO dates will break if any other content is entered. {{dts}} is consistent, so should not harm data extraction (Postel's law applies). UK lists are divided by county, but include cities and metropolitan boroughs which have their own ISO codes. For example, Birmingham, Sandwell and other monuments are all on the West Midlands county page, but the ISO code for Birmingham is GB-BIR, for Sandwell, GB-SAW. There is no ISO code of the county. There are also a lot of spelling errors, mis-capitalisations, etc, and it would be useful if the person uploading the data could actually check it before just leaving it to be corrected by other people. Having said that, an example of what Dave mentioned appears in Grade_I_listed_buildings_in_the_London_Borough_of_Southwark, where Southwark Cathedral is listed as a "Gate Pier". Surely the cathedral is notable as a church, not as a gate pier? The trouble is, if you don't correct them at the time of upload, how are non-experts supposed to be sure whether the descriptions are right or wrong?Deb (talk) 09:18, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

It may be worth reminding those who do not know that the site name in the English Heritage listing is simply the name recorded at the time of listing, give or take the odd updating and correction, and was not necessarily the official or proper name of the building even then, and certainly not now. Supporting the UK's first Wiki Loves Monuments competition

Hi all, thanks for the comments so far. For those who haven't been following organizational progress of the WLM competition to date, we have a small group of dedicated volunteers who are working hard to ensure that the UK's first contribution to the world's largest photographic competition goes without a hitch. We have a nice competition website to attract competitors (many of whom will not be Wiki savvy, and will be new contributors & editors). We are expecting this to be quite a big deal, and our friends at Wikimedia UK have been busy making arrangement for publicity as well as helping out with the lists. We expect press notices and image spreads to appear in the Metro, which publishes in Bath, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Newcastle and Sheffield, as well as in The Times. The high-profile nature of the competition has been strengthened by the agreement of Steve Cole ABIPP, Head of Photography at English Heritage, to join the national judging panel (jury).

The WLM volunteers will do everything they can to make sure the English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland lists are in a good state before the start of the national and international competitions - September 1st is just three weeks away now. We are all very aware that the deadline is looming, and that a quite a lot of work still remains to be done. Everyone is working as fast as they can and I am sorry if the rapidly approaching deadline has meant that some errors have slipped through. Really, we need more people to help out. There is a particular need for editors who are experienced with bots or scripts to pitch in now, not only to help fix some of the errors that have been mentioned above, but also to help put up the remainder of the listed building data using the standard WLM templates. If you can help in any way, please make yourself known to the WLM team, either via my talk page, or by adding your name to the helpers' page on Commons. If you can actively help now, you should also, please, sign up to the Wiki Loves Monuments UK mailing list, where you can obtain detailed information. You can see the current status of the data uploads by going to the Progress lists for Wikipedians; you can see there, for example, that we still need someone to deal with the uploading of almost all of the Scottish data. We can provide structured lists of data for those who can help with this.

In particular, please do not make mass reverts, unless you are able to put everything back correctly, and please do not remove or change the WLM template structure. This is essential for the automated upload tool to work properly, and also for the WLM international team to ensure that the data gets correctly harvested and copied into the worldwide Wiki Monuments Database.

After the competition has finished, at the end of September, would be a good time for the community to discuss - if desired - any possible template improvements to the way in which the UK data is standardized and displayed.

Michael, in the middle of your lengthy response, you say you are "sorry if the rapidly approaching deadline has meant that some errors have slipped through". This appears to be your only reference, indirect at that, to my concern that a number of links, including disambiguation, have been removed (deliberately so, not "accidentally slipped through"); and the only indication of you (collectively) taking responsibility for what you have done. You talk of rushing, and deadlines which are not applied by the wider Wikipedia Community nor binding on it, but you don't otherwise address that point. You repeat the request that the community fix the errors for you; I have already pointed out that breaking things then asking others to clean up after (collective) you is unacceptable. You ask us not to make radical edits, but you have made radical edits which have removed useful links, apparently without prior discussion. Despite your bold text, it seems that a reversion of the edits concerned would be the best solution. You can then find a way of re-applying your edits without removing others' work and expecting third parties to restore it. There is, though, no requirement for anyone reverting your botched edits to restore what you have lost, to then make good and redo your work. And no, a page on Wikimedia Commons is not the best place to discuss problems on en.Wikipedia. I'm supportive of WLM (and have been involved in making and improving the templates used) but it's not being presented in the best light either by the initial edits, nor in this exchange. An example: Baylis House

Nev1 says above that he is "adding links". He recently did so to Grade I listed buildings in Berkshire. Let's examine one entry on that page; Baylis House in Slough. Before the changes, that page informed us that the listing at Baylis House was for the "House, forecourt walls and pavilions". The sources in the previous version of the page were mainly dead, and are now in any event replaced with direct links to the original listings. Hiding of coordinates

A recant change to {{EH listed building row}} commented out the display of coordinates. This resulted in the following post on the template's talk page:

I don't know much about templates and don't want to go fiddling with the code, but I'm not sure the removal of Lat & Long is helpful. Although I'm happy with Grid Refs - anyone from outside the UK (and some Brits) will not be - therefore the removal of this function may limit their ability to find the building. It also stops the "KML" functionality which can map all the sites in a list onto Google or Bing maps (see for example the links top right of the list at Grade II* listed buildings in Taunton Deane). The edit summary says they are 50m out- but I have spent hours adding and correcting them on lists for Somerset - see sub lists of Grade I listed buildings in Somerset & Grade II* listed buildings in Somerset (a couple still being converted to use the template). Rod, it was the intention of the WLM team that both Geo-coordinates and grid references are useful, and ought to be shown, so the edit to comment out Geo-coordinates was a surprise to me. Do please keep on with your good work of filling them in and correcting them. If there turn out to be errors, they ought toi be corrected, not hidden. On Commons:Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in the United Kingdom/planning#Resources there is a reference to a PHP tool, but I don't know exactly if or where where that has been used. The edit summary cited also invites the question, why is inaccurate data being added to articles; and why are the people who added it not now removing or fixing it (rather than suppressing the display of good and bad data alike), if they're aware of their error? The nature of that edit summary suggests its a systematic error due to dodgy conversion from OSGB36 to WGS84 - something which also plagued the Geograph batch upload on Commons. A more intelligent conversion will handle that, but the existence of a systematic error suggests 'every coordinate pairing is suspect.--Nilfanion (talk) 09:52, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

  • Andy, the commenting out is of course a temporary fix (it was late and I was tired): as Nilfanion suggests, it is my contention that there is a problem with the coordinate set as a whole, so it is important to take a step back and assess the situation before any errors get compounded.
  • The co-ordinates used are the result of running the conversion script KTC sent me (derived from [12]) on the grid references. Before we added the 30,000 pairs of coordinates, I checked a sample for accuracy -- though perhaps not to the it-now-transpires-required precision.
  • Why do I think there might be a problem? The coordinates provided near me seem to be about 50m out to the SE, whereas Geohack's own conversion into lat/long of the grid reference is much better. I encourage others to test some pairings from near them. Investigating further, it is fairly clear to me that what went into the database were OSGB36 coordinates, when they should have been WGS84. Thus, we do indeed have a problem. At this moment in time I think the best fix is probably going to be to have a bot trawl though and replace all 30000 coordinate pairs with their WGS84 equivalents (a conversion script is given at [13]). The other option is to use Lua to (pro tem?) attempt the conversion. Thoughts? - Jarry1250 ^{[Vacation needed]} 20:52, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Please help get UK listed buildings ready for the start of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition on 1st September!

In September the UK is taking part for the first time in the international photography competition Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will be invited to submit pictures of listed buildings of significant importance, as recorded by English Heritage, Historic Scotland, Cadw, and NIEA. Eligible buildings are those of grades I and II* (England), category A (Scotland), grades I and II* (Wales) and grades A and B+ (Northern Ireland). The main external website for competitors can be found here, and you can leave a message there if you have queries about competing. Do please join in, and let people in your local area know of this excellent way in which both existing and new Wiki users can help improve the encyclopaedia by contributing photographs of local listed structures. What about organizing a local Wikimeet to attract new people?

In preparation for the start of the competition on 1st September there is still quite a lot of work to do, and we would like to ask for the help of UK Wikipedians. Your local and expert knowledge will be invaluable in ensuring that the lists of eligible buildings are up to date and correctly formatted. If you look at Listed buildings in the United Kingdom you will see how many structures are included. If you then follow the links, you can get to the detailed lists for your area. Alternatively have a look at the WLM planning table. Can you help to ensure that the lists for your area are up to date and well presented?

Some of the lists have been semi-automatically generated from data provided by the official listing organizations. These use pre formatted templates (eg EH header in England) which will make it much easier for competition participants to upload their photographs to Commons as an automated process. Please don't change the template structure, as we need to ensure that the templates are properly compatible with the WLM standards that are in use worldwide. The format allows a bot automatically to collect the information and to put it into the international Monuments Database.

The data still needs the attention of local editors:

• The "title" may need wikilinking to a suitable article name (whether we currently have that article or not). If there are several buildings in one street all of the wikilinks point at an article about the street; however each entry has a separate line in the list.
• The "location" column looks and sorts better if just the parish or town is included (& wikilinked).
• The "date completed" column sometimes has eg "C19" for 19th century, and "C1850" for c. 1850 when the date is uncertain - these need to be corrected manually.
• The "grid ref & lat & long" (which is occasionally missing) may be given to 8 characters — only 6 (grid ref) or 5 (lat & long) are really needed.
• Clicking on the "list entry number" should take you to the data sheet for that entry on the English Heritage database which can be checked if needed for details.
• The image column should have a picture added if we already have a suitable image on Commons. (N.B. if you are going to be taking photos yourself for inclusion in the competition don't upload them until September)
• References may be added according to normal WP practice.

World's largest photography contest comes to the UK!

September is the month when summer begins drawing to a close, the football season is in full swing and the leaves begin to change colour. You may not be aware that it's also the month of the world's largest photography competition.

Wiki Loves Monuments is a global competition, open to everyone. In the UK the aim is to gather together freely-licensed high quality photographs of the UK's listed buildings for use on Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. And it's open to everybody.

Wikipedia has a global audience of over 500 million people every month, making Wiki Loves Monuments a chance for entrants to have their photography potentially reach a very large audience. For example, the article about Hadrian's Wall receives around 700,000 visitors a year while the article about London is viewed around 4.5 million times a year.

Aside from being great fun, Wiki Loves Monuments is a way of capturing a snapshot of our nation’s cultural heritage for future generations, documenting our country’s most important historic buildings. Over time, the collections gathered throughout the competition will become an incredibly useful historical resource.

Entries can be images taken specially for the competition, or can be pre-existing images.

Michael Maggs, volunteer member of the Wiki Loves Monuments UK steering committee and a Wikimedia UK Trustee, said: “The contest is a great way not only to contribute to Wikipedia but also to record and share with the world images of your local historic environment. Why 1922?

I was looking at this article Immigration to the United Kingdom since 1922 and a related one Historical immigration to Great Britain. I can't see why it is immigration after 1922. There is no mention of the year 1922 apart from in the titles of the articles and bits at the top linking to the related articles. The article about immigration since 1922 seems to be mostly about immigration after and during WW2 so unless someone comes up with a reason as to why it's after 1922 I will move the article to Immigration to the United Kingdom since World War Two or Immigration to the United Kingdom since 1939. 1922 = de jure Irish independence. I guess that is actually relevant to the scope of the article too: Before then migration from Dublin to London would be internal to the UK, and after that would be immigration from outside. Nilfanion is right. 1922 was de jure the partition of the island of Ireland into two: north and south. Record keeping was also separated: North Ireland is part of the the UK (post 1922 = Great Britain and Northern Ireland), the Republic is not part of the UK. I agree with that. Irish migration to Great Britain is a significant element of all migration to the UK, and should be covered extensively. While Irish independence is the reason for the split being in 1922, it doesn't mean we should split it then. • While the article doesn't currently reflect it very well, "since 1933" or "since 1945" is actually a bit of an awkward time to break a history of migration - in the run-up to WW2 you had a lot of emigration from Germany and some neighbouring countries, which merged into the wartime and post-war settlement of displaced persons and political exiles in the UK. As a result, the period 1933-47 probably shouldn't be split. A more meaningful date for splitting the article would be 1948 - this is when the Empire Windrush arrived and the political discourse around migration began to shift. • This is not my topic area. With NI being part of the UK from 1922 onwards, transfers to and from NI aren't going to be recorded as migration. Those figures will only record the Republic - UK migration. If I'm right there was a 1931 UK census, but it was lost/destroyed; and there was no 1941 census due to the war. There have been UK census every ten years from 1951 onwards. The "raw papers" themselves will not available for 100 years, but the statistics are. So, there is UK census statistical data for the UK which will give the numbers of people claiming Irish ancestry (white / Irish), for 1911, 1921 and 1951-2011 (there are early ones as well). People from both north and south living in the UK may well tick the "Irish box" But, is this the same as migration data, the family or their ancestors might have emigrated from Ireland to the US or Canada in say 1900-1910 and then the current members migrated back to the UK (their ethnic origin is the same, "Irish"), but they've come to the UK from north American? British vs. English

I hope someone can help me. I've read the Wiki page all about the UK constituent countries (WP:UKNATIONALS) but it's not helping with my work with categories.
I'm currently creating nationality categories for women philosophers if there are more than a few. With women philosophers from the UK, about half are categorized as Category:British philosophers so I added them to Category:British women philosophers. The other half are categorized as Category:English philosophers so I created Category:English women philosophers and made that a subcategory of the British one.
I should say that none of the British women philosophers identify as Irish, Scottish or Welsh and these are all philosophers from the 20th and 21st century. Is there a good reason not to merge the British with the English category? Categories, as you might know, are navigational tools so I don't know if a reader who is looking for a UK woman philosopher will search under British or English.
In lieu of any advice, I'll just let things be. But I hope someone who visits this Talk Page might offer some advice on contemporary uses of these national identities, at least as categories on Wikipedia. Liz ^{Read! Talk!} 20:14, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Per WP:CATDIFFUSE you could move those that are definitively English into the subcat but merging them would go against that and serve no useful purpose. Categorising Onora O'Neill as English would be questionable at best and Mary Shepherd, whom I've added to the category, is definitively not English. NHS Trusts

A raft of poor stubs has been created for NHS Trusts, of which one is at AfD, and several like North East London NHS Foundation Trust have been speedied and unspeedied. A nonstandard handcrafted infobox is being used. If anyone is interested in WP coverage of the NHS, please join in. Is there an infbox geek out there who'd like to create a standard "NHS Trust" infobox, perhaps? There's some discussion at the talkpage of the editor who created the stubs. I'm sure the trusts are notable and worth articles, but there's a lot of work to be done. Thanks. PamD 09:03, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

I concur. I am trying hard to educate the very hard working creating editor into working slower and somewhat differently. There is also scope for a possible new infobox template to cover the UK NHS, since there are particular areas where it is special and some parameter standardisation would be beneficial. Would anyone be interested if I created a portal for UK film? Normally I create portals without prior discussion if there is an existing equivalent on the French Wikipedia or another Wikipedia. Please help me find this website

I had the impression that Gyosei International College in the U.K. was a secondary boarding school, but when I read through the website it talked about BA degrees. The Japanese name of the institution uses Daigaku 大学 which means "university". I checked EduBase, of the Department for Education but it seemed to come up empty. Would someone mind looking through records to see how the UK government classified this school?

Okay, after doing some digging I answered the question myself: there was a separate Gyosei School and a Gyosei College. However the Gyosei International School UK website seems to be elusive (I got the college website). What was the URL of the former Gyosei International School UK before it closed in 2002?
