Masterman, Lucy (1939). C. F. G. Masterman. London: Nicholson and Watson. p. 345-346

[edit]

{{stale}}

  • Masterman, Lucy (1939). C. F. G. Masterman. London: Nicholson and Watson. p. 345–346.

For David Lloyd George and Charles Masterman, and possibly others. I need to verify the quotation "When Lloyd George came back to the party, ideas came back to the party", and clarify if this was written or said, and if possible get a date for it. I would also like to check if the publisher is given as "Nicholson and Watson" or as "Ivor Nicholson and Watson".

Thanks, DuncanHill (talk) 13:12, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The book Modern Wales: Politics, Places and People by Kenneth O. Morgan states that Masterman wrote it to his wife in 1926.[5] I also found a number of history books giving a longer version: "I've fought him as hard as anyone, but I have to confess, when Lloyd George[...]". In Gbooks snippet view of the 1968 reprint of the Lucy Masterman book, the visible portion reads me, "but I have to confess, when Lloyd George[...]". I wasn't able to directly verify that the "I've fought him" portion was there. (My guess is that an OCR error was preventing it from showing up in search results). Cheers, gnu57 16:03, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@DuncanHill: In terms of the publisher, both worldcat and Trove say Nicholson and Watson. But this could easily be reconfirmed once the quote is confirmed. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 18:03, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks both, that is helpful but I will leave this open in case someone can resolve it positively. I think I'll have to keep an eye out for a copy of the book! DuncanHill (talk) 17:01, 13 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Freeknowledgecreator: You understand that pages 939-940 are not an article, right? They're back matter - a list of the 10-12 authors who contributed articles to that issue of the journal, with a one paragraph capsule bio of each (like the capsule bios for Cooper, Ephratt, and Falzeder on the page you linked, and the capsule bio for Fusella that I linked above). I don't have a legal copy that I can send you, but if you add up the freely available "Additional information" from each of the articles in the issue, you'll have the same total content. --Worldbruce (talk) 07:46, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I indirectly found a reference to a page in this book, which I can't access. I need two things

  • I believe that this is an edited collection of essays, so I could do with a list of contents to know the chapter titles and page ranges, and who wrote each chapter
  • The reference I have is to p. 154. I've have no reason to doubt that, but it would be a bonus if I could see the text

The goat tower at Cholmondeley Castle

[edit]

{{stale}} So there's this goat tower at Cholmondeley Castle, and the photo of it we have:

looks like it could easily be forty+ years old, which means it would be the second goat tower built. There's nothing on the current website for Cholomondeley Castle about it at all, as far as I can tell, which is another reason I think it might predate most of the other goat towers, as goat towers have become a viral meme in the past ten years and if it was a recent addition I think they'd be using it in their marketing as the only frickin' goat tower in the UK, but the closest I find is a 1999 photograph and a 2010 brochure where they mention it and call it 'unique'. Can anyone find a mention of when it was built? Or mentions of it at all earlier than 1981? Thanks for any help! --valereee (talk) 19:18, 18 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Valereee: The only thing we do here at the Resource Exchange is procure copies of sources. You'd be better off asking this question at the Research Desk. Then, if they suggest a source you don't have access to, you can come back here and request it. Compassionate727 (T·C) 15:49, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Except the research desk is probably dead. Nevermind. I mean, you should ask there (it would be good to find out for sure), but I guess you're most likely to get a helpful response here, and then maybe at the reference desk. Compassionate727 (T·C) 15:53, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Compassionate727, I'll try the Reference Desk, thanks! ----valereee (talk) 16:47, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Valereee: I didn't find anything related to the goat tower, although I did find a couple of sources that seem like they might be useful if you want to expand the article's coverage of other aspects:
I can send you the JSTOR article if you email me. Compassionate727 (T·C) 17:55, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Compassionate727, I'm able to get to it, thanks so much! --valereee (talk) 18:39, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry. The book is located at the Archival storage of My library, which I can't access currently. --Gazal world (talk) 17:09, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@KAVEBEAR: To clarify, the 1965 George Allen & Unwin (London) edition and the 1966 Doubleday (New York) edition are both translated by Reginald Spink. The Gauguins Sönderhavsår mentioned above is the Swedish title of the book, not a different translator. George Allen & Unwin had an Australian subsidiary at Crows Nest, New South Wales, but not until 1976, so I can't square the requested 1965 year with the requested Australian place of publication. Going by Google snippets, there's no obvious difference in the U.K. and U.S. editions other than pagination and spelling (annexe vs. annex, for instance), so it might help you get what you need if you elaborated on how you compared them and why your comparison found them dissimilar. --Worldbruce (talk) 20:13, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The snippet I am trying to find include the sentence: “Lacascade. This problem was how to persuade the natives of Raiatea...[17]KAVEBEAR (talk) 08:08, 11 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@KAVEBEAR: Your Google Books link shows that text on page 189 of the U.S. edition. The same text is on page 177 of the U.K. edition, so I guess I don't understand why the Internet Archive link provided above doesn't suit you. I could pay to order various editions from various libraries, but I don't see how the result would differ from what you've already been offered. --Worldbruce (talk) 20:19, 11 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I was unable to find the snippet in the archive.org version back in December. I will check again but there is currently a waitlist. KAVEBEAR (talk) 00:22, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Worldbruce: I just borrowed the book again online. I still can't find the page in the Archive.org version. You point to page 177 but I can't find the desired snippet. I am missing something here. Would you want to borrow the Internet Archive version and find the page for me because I can't find it? KAVEBEAR (talk) 03:26, 18 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The author is Petteys, not Pettys. OL 120224W ISBN 0816184569 Searching Hathitrust finds "Smallbone" only on p.488 ( https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?q1=smallbone;id=mdp.39015009269815;view=1up;seq=510;start=1;sz=10;page=search;num=488 ), while "Melville" shows up there and also on pages 99, 198, 376, 560, 651.

It's possible the 1999 disk edition also has the same entry. ISBN 0783800908 LeadSongDog come howl! 19:25, 17 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
