This Year's Model scheduled for TFA
This is to let you know that the above article has been scheduled as today's featured article for 26 February 2023. Please check that the article needs no amendments. Feel free to amend the draft blurb, which can be found at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/February 26, 2023, or to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/February 2023. I suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks and congratulations on your work. Gog the Mild (talk) 11:13, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hey Gog the Mild I hope it's not too late but I was hoping we could schedule this for March 17 instead to mark its 45th anniversary? If not it's no biggie but after doing the same for Hunky Dory and Low I was hoping we could do the same for Model. Thanks. – zmbro (talk) (cont) 15:52, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- That should be doable. Get a request for March in at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests (use the same blurb) and I'll see about removing it from February tomorrow. Gog the Mild (talk) 23:07, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
Thank you today for the article, about "Elvis Costello's second album This Year's Model, which was also his first with the backing band known as the Attractions"! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:54, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

- Kyle Peake Yep I got you. I actually got quite a few open as well. If you get two or three I'll do the same. Not sure where all the reviewers went. Weird. – zmbro (talk) (cont) 13:01, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

If that's a "blatant lie" as you put it, it's remarkable that it's been on here since he was still alive and nobody had changed it since. I've just checked the edit history and it said it here

- I feel the same way. I've mentioned this in my previous edit summaries before but basing the majority of the article on only Sandford and Buckley imo was a mistake; while Buckley is extremely reliable, Sandford really isn't. In Pegg's book, he notes how Sandford makes numerous claims and inaccuracies in his book which, upon investigation into other sources, I found to be true. Hence why in the past 2 years I've tried fixing a bunch of things by adding Pegg, Trynka, and Spitz, among others.
- To clarify Mary Finnigan, I can't verify with Trynka or Spitz atm but but we must look at the timeline. Pegg says that David met Mary in 1969 and moved into her flat in April (he wrote "Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud" there). Well he met Angie in May, proposed to her on Christmas (see "The Prettiest Star") and married in March 1970. By this point David had ended things with Hermione Farthingale so he was a free man when he moved in with Mary. So if we look strictly at the timeline, saying "he had an affair with Mary in 1969" is just plain wrong because David and Angie didn't marry until 1970. So yeah, it is remarkable that that sentence has been there for so many years (even more remarkable I didn't catch it earlier). Rodericksilly – zmbro (talk) (cont) 17:56, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Promotion of The Next Day
Bowie at the Marquee Club
In researching stuff on the Lovin' Spoonful, I read in the autobiography of their bass player Steve Boone that on April 17, 1966 – the day before the Spoonful were to play at the Marquee Club in London – he swung by the venue and saw "some cat named David Bowie" playing. Does this sound plausible? I thought it was a cool little bit of trivia, but I'm also trying to gauge Boone's reliability in general. Tkbrett (✉) 13:30, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
- Hey Tkbrett! Sorry for the late reply. Just checked out Cann's book and he does say Bowie did perform with the Buzz at the Marquee Club on April 17, 1966. It was apparently the first time Kenneth Pitt saw Bowie perform and after the show began management talks with him. So that's a neat fact. With this info I'd say it was entirely plausible! – zmbro (talk) (cont) 12:09, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- Awesome. I have found a lot of these little paths-crossing moments lately. John and George were two of many big-time musicians to show up to the Spoonful's show on April 18. It makes me wonder if John was ever in the same room as Bowie before they formally met in 1974, before recording "Fame". Do you know what Bowie was doing the next night of the 18th? It was an invite-only show, so I doubt he was there, but you never know. Tkbrett (✉) 12:43, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- If I recall my quick glance at it he was either doing another show somewhere or still doing management talks. I know Cann mentioned "Can't Help Thinking About Me". If I recall correctly, I believe Bowie first met John at a party at Elizabeth Taylor's house sometime in '74 (I know it was before the "Fame" session) – I know for a fact I've read that somewhere as there are pictures of that online. Californication
Hi, you reverted my comment:
"Volume of original CD was increased well above digital clipping (more than +10dB), making it's sound quality quite bad and this release is used as an example of [[loudness war]] victim."
Source is my own copy ripped and opened in CoolEdit back in 1999 by myself after listening and perceiving something bad was happening on my Hifi. Discovered LoudnessWar on that precise moment. Had to use Clip Restoration which recovered peaks over +10dB above saturation (obviously had to reduce overall level -12dB and burn a CD-R which had better sound than original). Sources are on same Californication wiki article. And: https://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/117926 DR4 is one of the worst loudnesswars offenders. Isidroco (talk) 23:27, 16 June 2023 (UTC)
- Isidroco Hi there. Are you referring to this edit? If so that wasn't me; also almost a year ago. The book you cited in your edit here is already cited in the reception section of article, which is why it got removed where you put it. (I also wholeheartedly agree with you the album is clipped and distorted to hell; the sound quality from One Hot Minute to Californication alone is insanity). Good think we have live versions... – zmbro (talk) (cont) 02:52, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
Stanley Dorfman: Heroes
Hi, I've noticed that you are citing Nicholas Ferguson as the music video director of David Bowie's "Heroes" on multiple articles, and deleting and/or reverting edits I've made that cite Stanley Dorfman as the music video's director. If you look at the both the IMDB for the "Heroes" music video (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6825410/) and the Dorfman IMDB page ( https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0233578/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1) you will see that Dorfman was the video's director. If you take a look at Ferguson's IMDB page however, (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0272564/) you will see that he is not listed as the video's director. Dorfman is also listed as the video's director of the music video on the BBC website on the link about the film about "Heroes" made by Bowie's Producer Tony Visconti https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03g18sx and his is listed as it's director on Metropolitan Museum of Art website, which includes the video in it's permanent collection (https://www.moma.org/collection/works/118096?artist_id=34111&page=1&sov_referrer=artist). Dorfman is also listed as the director in the book 'David Bowie and the Art of Music Video' by Lisa Perrott https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/david-bowie-and-the-art-of-music-video-9781501335143/. (Despite Pegg's misinformation in his book, Ferguson did not direct the actual music video for "Heroes" in 1977, however he did direct a television show in which Bowie performed the song live that year (See here: https://www.thinwhiteduke.net/14/david-bowie-performances/david-bowie-heroes-marc-bolan-tv-show/, and Furguson also worked as and art director for Ready Steady Go! the telvision show directed by Stanley Dorfman) SacredLotus7 (talk) 22:03, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
- There does appear to be some misinformation regarding this. I'll respond more in depth tonight when I'm back on my laptop. – zmbro (talk) (cont) 15:33, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
- SacredLotus7 One thing to keep in mind is that IMDb is an unreliable source as it contains user-generated content. I noticed you have been citing IMDb on some of your pages and that unfortunately does not cut it here. That being said, I did notice the IMDb stuff but again, it's unreliable. Looking at my own books, I found that Pegg and Thomas Jerome Seabrook listed Ferguson, while Chris O'Leary cited Dorfman (clarified that here). I'll also add the BBC source as an additional. It looks like that Perrott book hasn't even been released yet, but I'm sure when it comes out it would be beneficial to WP. I'm assuming the discrepancy of sources between Ferguson and Dorfman was due to, like you said, Bowie promoting it extensively in '77. (although thinwhiteduke.net is a Bowie fan site and unreliable). – zmbro (talk) (cont) 02:43, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you, I appreciate your response, very helpful. Agreed re. the Perrott book. Based on what I can ascertain online it seems that it will released in September. I was not aware about IMDb being user generated, that's good to know. I noted that others had cited IMDb and that is why I did, however won't moving forward and as soon I can get to it I will remove my references that utilize it and replaces them with other sources. Yes, it does seem that the discrepancy of sources between Ferguson and Dorfman was due to Bowie promoting it extensively in '77, and that Ferguson directed a television show in which Bowie performed it, from which a video of Bowie singing it is circulating online with reference to Ferguson as the director and the performance being the song's "music video", which it is not. All best. SacredLotus7 (talk) 03:32, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

- Hello again! I appreciate your commitment for improving Wikipedia's reliability. I have reached out directly to Pegg regarding the Furguson/Dorfman discrepancy and will update you on any response I receive. In the meantime, I wanted to share some additional sources that support Dorfman as the director of the "Heroes" music video. The Official David Bowie Website, a (arguably the most) credible and authoritative source , credits Dorfman as the director of the video in their description of a screening event of the video at MoMA. You can find this information at [1]. Furthermore, Ian Dixon's book “I'm Not a Film Star: David Bowie as Actor” also credits Dorfman as the director [2]. There is also an unreleased Bowie video credited to Dorfman on YouTube, featuring Bowie wearing the same bomber jacket as in the "Heroes" video (which Pegg mentions) that also appears to be shot on the same set [3]. Additionally, this Pitchfork article [4] and this Stereogum article - see #6 and this Electronic Sound music magazine article [5] all credit Dorfman as the director. Furthermore, there is no mention, credible or otherwise, of Ferguson having directed any other Bowie videos, while Dorfman has been credited with directing at least three Bowie videos that I can find. I came across the "Sense of Doubt" video today (despite believing I was aware of all of Bowie’s videos!), suggesting the possibility of additional Bowie videos directed by Dorfman. If I come across any further information, I will certainly keep you updated. While there are other sources available (which I'm happy to send if you're interested, albeit the credit on Bowie's site seems to me to be adequate verification alone), I thought these may be of particular interest to you. Considering the reliable information available, it seems problematic to credit Ferguson as the director of a Bowie video on Wikipedia (and additionally, to name him prior to Dorfman) simply because Pegg credits Ferguson in passing in his book—given that Bowie's own website, along with numerous books and music magazines, attribute to Dorfman. Pegg's mention of Ferguson in his book appears to be a mistake, as we discussed previously. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. SacredLotus7 (talk) 21:21, 25 June 2023 (UTC)
- Your posting of the Hollywood reporter link had already convinced lol but thanks very much for posting these! If the Bowie website themselves stated it it's very clear Pegg was wrong in this case. I apologize for jumping to conclusions earlier and removing all your edits from the respective pages. I will go ahead and re-add those. And you actually contacted Pegg? That's super dope, hopefully he responds. I've always thought about sending him a DM on Instagram to see if he'd respond and after this I just might haha. I'm happy we were able to resolve this issue. I will make the corrections now. – zmbro (talk) (cont) 21:26, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

No worries about removing all my edits, I get that your intention was accuracy, and thanks for replacing them as mine is too! All best. SacredLotus7 (talk) 05:07, 26 June 2023 (UTC)

- Yes! He wrote a moving post on his blog See here I think the David Bowie Archive citing Dorfman as the director was convincing : ) I haven't had time to add to the pages but I will try to at some point soon if someone else doesn't! Although I don't know if blog posts can be added as trusted sources even if written by a notable author, do you? Interesting to see the screenshot he found of the Ferguson TV show, even I with my extensive research had not seen it. Ironic, too, he used a similar screenshot (total coincidence) that I attempted to add to the "Heroes" Wikipedia article but that got deleted as it was deemed by Wikipedia authorities as not relevant to the article! SacredLotus7 (talk) 00:38, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, Hope you are well. I just saw you added a citation (number 29) linking to the Bowie website where they partially quote their press release about the MoMA retrospective. You'll see that I added an additional citation (number 27) and wanted to give you a heads up that while both may appear to direct to the same link on the Bowie site, they don't. The citation I added includes the same exact information included on the page your citation directs to, however the one I added additionally allows readers to gain a more comprehensive understanding. As for whether both citations should remain, I will leave that up to you to determine! Thank you. SacredLotus7 (talk) 18:51, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

"Heroes" Music Video Image
Hi again, you had reverted the image/screenshot of the Music video for Bowie's "Heroes" that I had added saying "as lined out on the image's page, this violates NPCC#8: it does not contribute to the understanding of the article; plus, we already have two images in the section that better aid in the understanding of promotion". The rationale for NPCC#8 has been updated on the image page and will not have been determined to fail it until it has been reviewed on Saturday, 24 June 2023. Until such time if you remove it from the article again you will cause it to fail NPCC#9. I believe that the image meets NPCC#8 as it aids in identification and commentary on the official music video for the subject of the article, which is the song, and provides an understanding of the video's visual content; which cannot be rendered through just text or the other two images that presently exist in the section. As such, I respectfully ask that you allow the image to remain without reverting it again in order that it can be assessed whether it meets NPCC#8, without you causing it to fail NPCC#9 by it's removal. SacredLotus7 (talk) 13:53, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
- Turns out that the image failed NPCC#7 rather than number #8, I'm not sure why as it was deleted before I could determine the issue. However thank you for having removed it from the article page in the first place, clearly you were right to! SacredLotus7 (talk) 06:06, 26 June 2023 (UTC)

Duran Duran - songs from their 1981 debut album being part of the disco genre.
Wikipedia has an article on Duran Duran's 1981 hit "Planet Earth" being a part of the disco genre. The article stated from above verifies that, plus "Girls on Film".
Please re-instate. Odulumni99 (talk) 00:17, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- Odulumni99 Find an actual reliable source that supports your claim, because that one is certainly not. Continue reverting and you'll be reported. – zmbro (talk) (cont) 02:45, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- Since you happen to be lord and master of Wikipedia, with your heavy opinion about what defines music and what sources are valid - then why don't you edit the article on Duran Duran's "Planet Earth" single, the song lists the disco genre without any sources attached or stated. the next day
zmbro, i had two quick questions regarding this article and the associated blurb.
- would it be appropriate to replace "since 1976" in the blurb with "ever at the time"? bowie's 1976 studio album, station to station, peaked on u.s. charts at number three, while the next day debuted at number two, and i feel that stating that the latter album was "Bowie's highest-charting US album since 1976" suggests that the 1976 album did better. the article body describes the next day as "Bowie's best US chart placement to date", so the proposed statement appears to be already sourced in the article. i included the qualifier "at the time" because black star later topped the u.s. charts.
- the article mentions that bowie's surgery "le[d] to the delay of his final live concert tour". however, the article on the tour itself mentions that bowie had surgery on the day after what ended up being the last performance of that tour; all performances scheduled for later dates were cancelled. do you know why there appears to be a discrepancy between the two articles?

- Dying I made the corrections. Those errors could have been from the FAC but it's on me as the nominator. My apologies. – zmbro (talk) (cont) 22:11, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
- no worries, zmbro, we all make mistakes. did you also want to make a similar change to the phrase "since 1976" in the blurb? you changed it in the article lead, but i don't know if you had deliberately left the wording in the blurb alone. in case you weren't already aware, the blurb only falls under cascade protection beginning on the day before its appearance on the main page, so you can still edit it until midnight.by the way, i had suggested using "ever at the time" rather than "to date" because i believe using "to date" would suggest that the next day is the bowie album that placed the highest on u.s. charts as of today (according to the definitions of "to date" in cambridge, merriam-webster, and oxford), and that isn't true because black star outperformed the next day. (i assume that the source used to support the "to date" wording in the article body predates black star.) in any case, using "since 1976" is technically correct, so i have no objections if you prefer to leave it as is. dying (talk) 21:54, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

Hey zim. I was hoping to improve the Lovin' Spoonful discography page and to eventually nominate it as a Featured List. I haven't had any experience nominating list articles, so I was hoping you could help me make sure it all looked good, since I know you have plenty of experience with list articles. - Hey Tkbrett apologies for the late reply; been super busy lately. Bowie disruption
I've blocked the IP for 72 hours. Looking at behavioural evidence here and here, based on edit summaries and what they want to edit, I think this editor has previously edited under an account that is now indefinitely blocked. However, the only evidence I have is circumstantial. Although Informed analysis frequently edited logged out, as documented at ANI, the IPs there are in Canada, whereas this one is in Madrid, so the technical evidence is not there. Perhaps I need someone like Auntie Bishonen who has far less moral dilemmas about simply saying "whose sock are you"? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:22, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- Ritchie333 I wouldn't be surprised. I've tried being reasonable going on two months now yet all they do is the usual "I'm right, you're wrong" way of thinking. I'm hoping it stops after this. – zmbro (talk) (cont) 16:52, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- It's true that "Whose sock are you, please?" has become something of a catchphrase or motto for me, Ritchie333. Note the "please", though — Bishonen and Bishzilla are always polite! Bishonen | tålk 17:09, 14 November 2023 (UTC).
- If I can definitively prove that the IP is Informed analysis, or even get a consensus from admins that it is, the IP will be blocked for much longer (as block evasion) and you're unlikely to get a sore head from having to deal with them again. TFA?
I'm thinking of running Darkness on the Edge of Town at TFA on January 28; does that work for you? - Dank (push to talk) 03:22, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- Dank It would have been nice to have it on the main page for its 45th anniversary this year but that has since passed. I assume waiting until June 2, 2024 would be too long? If not I'd prefer that date, but if so, yes January 28 would be fine. – zmbro (talk) (cont) 15:42, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- I'll remove it from January. If you make a request (at WP:TFAP now, and when the time comes, at WP:TFAR), I have no reason to think that won't work, but occasionally people will object to a nomination at TFAR for one reason or another. - Dank (push to talk) 17:15, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
