Re: Pelagic thresher image

Thanks for the heads-up. I uploaded that in my early-days on Wikipedia, sorry about any confusion. One thing I should say though, I didn't know that the work was Doug Perrine. I was browsing an article on shark evolution and noticed that the image was on the article, and not attributed to anyone. My mistake for thinking it was in Public Domain. Fish pages format

Hello. I listed below 3 option for species organization (In fish family pages):

A list as is currently displayed in fish-family pages.
A colored table.
A colorless table. (Easier to maintain when a species needs to be added).

I think the table format is much better, because:

The binomial and common names are clearly separated and can be distinguished with one look.
With many species, it becomes difficult to follow a list.
More fields and notes can be easily added - such as range, size etc.

Stingray and common skate

The "beignets de foie de raie" are ray liver fritters. You are right to be sceptical; somehow in the internet there are lots of articles on rays from the biological viewpoint and on the other hand articles on rays from the gastronomical viewpoint, but nobody seems to have bothered to make a connexion between them. One could say that "It is something all good cooks know". My mother did prepare rays at home (I also cook, but have never done so myself). The preparation is elaborate and except for the flesh strands in the wings and the livers, everything else is thrown away. My mother was positive that the best ray for eating is the stingray, which is (D. pastinaca) in our Mediterranean area. It is also the only ray acceptable for preparing certain fish dishes in our area. I tried to find a link in English but was not successful. But I have been able to find a link in German supporting this view (Rezepte mit Rochen die beliebtesten Rezepte). It says: From the two main species (found in Germany is implied), stingray and common skate (Dipturus batis), the first one is better (more advantageous) for cuisine use. (Von den zwei Hauptarten (Stachelrochen und Glattrochen) ist der erstere fuer die Kueche vorteilhafter.) I will keep looking and thank you for your interest in rays at the table. Certain preparations are excellent, like these Ailes de raie sauce au beurre noir here and the Roulade de raie et merlu panée et gratinée here. I must disagree with your observations on two points:

The table should be spread on the entire screen to make it more compact vertically, so it won't stretch extensively downward. This shortcoming would be more pronounced when dealing with genera which contain a hundred species or more.
I don't see the point of omitting such basic information as tropical/subtropical or oceanic/reef dwelling. This is definitely not copyright infringement, as the same information is present in lots of sources and publications. This isn't even a sentence but a single word, and an essential feature of the species.
It would be nice to make this sort of table a standard across all Wikipedia animal pages. Mariusm1 (talk) 05:25, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Koi

Thanks for looking at koi. So to summarize, there is consensus that Koi are derived from Cyprinus carpio haematopterus, either exclusively, or from hybrids of C. c. haematopterus, with C. c. carpio. Is that basically correct? Thanks, LK (talk) 11:16, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Outline of sharks

Hi, i thought i would bring this to your attention being you seem to be the main shark editor at the moment. It seems to be the same content as shark, except poorly titled and written. It really looks like a straightforward deletion candidate... any thoughts? By the way, your articles are brilliant, i am glad someone with the access and ability to use the literature is bringing these articles up to scratch. Oh, i missed the project tag on the talk page... fair enough then. I suppose if these outline pages are to become 'mandatory', there's no reason to get rid of it.
