Stargate characters

Hi again. You may be interested in the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stargate#Do what with trimmed character lists?. The preliminary result of this discussion was basically to trim the character lists and merge them into the race articles where the size limit of 40-60 kB allows that, see e.g. Ori (Stargate). The really important recurring characters are then further trimmed&merged to the main character lists (i.e. List of Stargate SG-1 characters and List of Stargate Atlantis characters)) with just a paragraph, but the longer summary stays in the Race article. I am mostly focusing on getting the SG-1 characters up to speed and am leaving the Atlantis characters alone, but that overlaps somewhat in the article Artificial human characters in Stargate. If you agree with this procedure, maybe we can coordinate our efforts, because you're doing a pretty darn good job trimming. – sgeureka tc 07:56, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

I like that idea. Almost all the race articles need trimming anyway and it'll work even better after then. Currently I see you copying the existing character lists into the List of Stargate ??? Character articles; I assume those will be trimmed further when the merging into the race lists happens? -- Yzx (talk) 16:57, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, the copy-pasted character descriptions will be trimmed down to one-paragraph sections (or bullet-point summaries) in the List of Stargate xxx characters articles eventually. It is often easier to see what needs to be done than to speculate on the result, and work needed to start somewhere (I have sloppy-merged roughly 300 crufty SG episode articles and over 100 other SG articles since last October, and now the resulting dozens of crufty lists are slowly being cleaned up). The rest is mostly explained in the discussion I linked above, although nothing is ever set in stone. It's the progress that counts. – sgeureka tc 18:41, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Hello. Since you're working on the Goa'uld characters now, you may have some idea if/how System Lord can be merged there (the definition of System Lord may find a place in Goa'uld). The overlapping is significant. (This merger was always a long-term plan of me.) – sgeureka tc 05:13, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

I'd recommend that the definition be merged into Goa'uld, and the list done away with altogether since it's basically a duplicate of this one. Something should be done with the Goa'uld symbol images; I rather like the way they look on the page but since they're non-free perhaps a link to another website with them (I think one of the game websites has such a page) would suffice. -- Yzx (talk) 05:17, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
For the purpose of wikipedia, GNU- and several Creative Commons-licensed images are considered free. The emblem images can therefore be used in any way we want. – sgeureka tc 05:25, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Are you going to move/merge the emblem images to Goa'uld characters in Stargate? I'll be off to bed in a minute and can't do much now, but I really think the images would serve a good purpose there (especially since the Goa'uld char screenshots may not be around forever in the current image-deletionist atmosphere). – sgeureka tc 22:38, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Added, although I wonder if it might not look better to have them all together somewhere, like in a table or something? In terms of images these are rather useful for identifying Jaffa. -- Yzx (talk) 03:02, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
I'll give this some thought. Maybe something like Wikipedia:Gallery tag could work, but you may be right in that this may be more a Jaffa topic than the Goa'uld. Maybe we can get more helpful input at the Stargate WikiProject. – sgeureka tc 09:37, 26 July 2008 (UTC) Never mind. I merged the remaining images into Goa'uld characters in Stargate, and they aren't annoying, so I'll leave that as the solution for now. Almost all Jaffa char sections say what Goa'uld they served, so the emblem images will just be one click away. – sgeureka tc 13:56, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

I have also begun with merging some of the char lists into the Race articles, but I'll leave those lists for you to merge that you have worked on (i.e. the Genii and the Wraith). The Jaffa and the Ancients should/could only be merged when their Race articles are trimmed first, but I am currently not in the mood to do that. The Goa'uld char list can likely stand on its own, and I am making some progress with the Tau'ri char lists and will see where that leads us. – sgeureka tc 15:37, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

When you merge articles, you should also fix so-called double redirects (Wikipedia:Double redirects; you can find them easily via "What links here" in the lefthand toolbar, then click on "Hide links"). A bot used to do that, but I haven't seen it around for ages. In the meantime, fair-use rationales on non-free images do not recognize double-redirect backlinks, and the images are placed in deletion categories sometimes within hours. – sgeureka tc 22:44, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

I need help

I'm interested in the stargate wikiproject but don't know how to help. I'm an avid fan and all but can't find anything that really pops out and says "Do something!" Could you help me?Kosh3 (talk) 21:13, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Currently most of the work is focused on removing excess plot detail and consolidating non-notable articles into larger, less non-notable articles (there are merge proposals and other details on the Wikiproject main and talk pages). A lot has been accomplished on that front with regards to the character pages, while a lot of articles in other areas remain bloated with trivial facts and speculation (especially in technology articles, which tend to be more prone to that sort of thing than most). There also needs to be copyediting to present tense (used in fiction) and to remove in-universe POV. Of course, what would be incredibly useful at any time is contributions of sourced real-world information. Hope that helps. -- Yzx (talk) 21:41, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Merger proposals

If you propose a merger instead of performing a WP:BOLD merger immediately, you should add merge tags to the articles and open a discussion thread at the merge target's talkpage to get input. I have opened one for the ZPMs at Talk:Ancient_technology_in_Stargate#Merger_of_Zero_Point_Module and stated my opinion. You may also be interested in this and this thread from March when I doubted the notability of ZPMs for the first time. – sgeureka tc 06:43, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Use of 'minor' designation for edits

Yzx, I don't think that some of your recent edits, such as changes of redirect targets for Asgard technology topics, should have been classed as 'minor edits'. There is not any hard rule about this, though. You might have your preferences set to designated edits as minor by default, a setting I would suggest your reconsidering if this is your pref setting. Barnstar

The Editor's Barnstar
Thank you for de-cruftifying so many Stargate technology- and Atlantis-releated articles. These are pages I would not have been able to edit due to lack of (in-universe) knowledge and interest. – sgeureka tc 07:58, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks! Glad to be of help. -- Yzx (talk) 17:28, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

If you still get a kick out of trimming SG articles...

...the character articles need a lot of plot trimming. (I'll be doing an initial trim on McKay and Sheppard in a minute.) Every character will require different sections, but I've found a general sectioning like in Homer Simpson or Vala Mal Doran to work well. Encyclopedic expansion can follow later and will not be the/my focus any time soon for most of them. Just a suggestion if you don't know what to do with your time. :-) – sgeureka tc 20:39, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Most of those articles are a mess. There's almost no real-world info in them, and trimming the plot down to acceptable levels won't leave much. Still, I'll work some on it when I have time. -- Yzx (talk) 04:45, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
I imagine if everything is said and done (if I can keep up the enthusiasm to get them all to Good Article level), no character article should have more than maybe 7 (preferably 3-5) paragraphs sourced entirely from primary sources. If it turns out that some characters like Jonas, Lt. Ford and George Hammond neither have enough in-universe information nor real-world information to grow beyond non-crufty stubs, it may be time to think about a different representation again (as always, that's too early to tell). – sgeureka tc 07:18, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Hatak-collage.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Hatak-collage.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:07, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

I've reviewed the DYK and confirmed it, but there is a small thing. The article doesn't clearly state that this is the only method or the only wavelength this animal can perceive. A little rewording in the article would help. - Mgm|(talk) 11:13, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

What a lot of stingrays. Having just visited Roughtail stingray, and noting you have been busy putting these up for DYK, have you thought of nominating them for Good Article status? They look to me to be in the right ballpark? Or is that a future plan? Cheers.hamiltonstone (talk) 00:53, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! No, I haven't really thought about Good Articles, as I'm not familiar with the procedure or the requirements. -- Yzx (talk) 01:20, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
OK. Reaching Good Article (GA) status is one of WP's key proceses in developing great content. WP has some criteria for what is a good article. These criteria cover stylistic points and points relating to content - the quality of facts and sources. Check out the Guide for nominating good articles to see a few brief points about the process. Once you've looked at these, I would pick one of your articles that you are happy with (including that there are no copyright etc issues with the images you have used) and nominate it on the Good Article nominations page. There are instructions near the top of that page on how to nominate an article. It can take a few weeks for a reviewer to get around to doing the review (there's a backlog) - which is another reason to nominate one now. Once you have done the first, that review may give you some feedback on whether there are any particular issues worth addressing across all your articles. But the stuff you have been doing looks to me to be pretty high quality, so I would be hopeful that the review process would not be too onerous, and then you could move on to nominating quite a number of your pieces. The GA process is good for WP - it improves content - and good for you - you get helpful tips on improving your work, and get to interact with a few different, and often experienced, Wikipedians. If you're unlucky and come across a grumpy reviewer, don't worry, we all have our off days, and it'll all get sorted out. You can ask a question on my talk page if you wish, or on the page of much more experienced editors than me, like User:Wasted Time R, User:Awadewit or User:Coppertwig. Cheers. hamiltonstone (talk) 02:15, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
