National varieties of English
[edit]Hello. In a recent edit to the page Papua conflict, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.
For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, India, or Pakistan use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author of the article used.
In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Thank you. Acroterion (talk) 02:49, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Bkissin (talk) 17:56, 16 August 2020 (UTC)Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello Wowzers122, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your additions to Nduma Defense of Congo-Renovated have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. All other images must be made available under a free and open license that allows commercial and derivative reuse to be used on Wikipedia.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 14:29, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you for notifying me about that I plan on going back and rewriting it to paraphrase it better as well as cite my edits. Wowzers122 (talk) 22:36, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks
[edit]I'd Like to thanks you for helping me keep the 2020 Democratic Republic of the Congo attacks updated. --Garmin21 (talk) 19:12, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
Add proper sources and don't copy
[edit]Always source what you add and don't copy from sources. Many of your statements are mostly copied except for a few minor word alterations. LéKashmiriSocialiste (talk) 18:23, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry about that I will try to summarize my sources better. Wowzers122 (talk) 03:14, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- Here's a hint: read the source; hide the source; wait 60 seconds; write your summary in a text editor based on what you remember, without looking at the source: unless you've trained in raw memorisation, your wording will almost certainly differ from the source; after you've written your text, go back to the source and make corrections where your text is misleading or inaccurate, since it's likely that you mis-remembered some details. Somali Guardian
[edit]Please add any sources you can find about Somali Guardian at Talk:Timeline of the Tigray War#Somali Guardian. The claims made by the source are highly significant for the Tigray War, and so far, we don't have any third-party sources that either claim that the newspaper is serious or that it provides fake news. We don't even have the website's own claims about who runs it or who the chief editor is. Boud (talk) 16:38, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Discretionary sanctions alert
[edit]This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.
You have shown interest in the Horn of Africa (defined as including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and adjoining areas if involved in related disputes). Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.
For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

The page Draft:Houston County Career Academy has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appeared to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appeared to be a direct copy from https://hcca.hcbe.net/abouttheschool. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition has been be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.
Please do not recreate the material without addressing these concerns, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If you think this page should not have been deleted for this reason, you may contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you may open a discussion at Wikipedia:Deletion Review — Diannaa (talk) 23:52, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Map legends
[edit]Hello. Just a thought re maps like this – it might be better to leave out the legend and instead put it in the caption section (like e.g. 2012 Senegalese presidential election), as this will ensure the text displays at a size that is legible to readers (the Algerian maps display at a size that is slightly too small for the legend to be legible (at least for me)). You can also add the legend to the description on commons so other language wikis can copy it across. Cheers, Number 57 21:08, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Number 57: First, I would like to say that out of respect, I have enlarged the legend on all the maps. However, I do believe that all of the previous maps (well maybe not the third one) were legible as they were on both mobile and PC (both of which are old and small), nor have I gotten a complaint about the legend from any of the people I've shown it to on my social medias. I try my best to make sure legends on my maps are legible and not too overly complicated or cluttery. Unfortunately, I am only human, and so my judgement is never perfect even then I don't understand why it would be so hard to increase the size of the map in the infobox (isn't that what makes SVGs so great?) or better yet, why can't a reader simply click on the image and enlarge it? The reason why I've moved away from legends in the caption recently (beyond it looking ugly in my opinion) is that people should be able to take and use the maps for whatever they want without having to add their own legend outside of Wikipedia. This isn't a theoretical either. I've seen my maps posted in the wild on social media and I've seen Wikipedia maps (not mine) used in papers. A smaller reason I don't like to use legends in the captions of my national maps is that some foreign wikis seem to be allergic to them. A clear example is that the captionless map of the 2023 Senegalese presidential election is used on english Wikipedia and other wikis but others use the captioned one. - It was only a suggestion. But I would say that rather than talking to people on social media, it really should be discussed here with other editors. There seems to be far too much off-wiki discussion, which is not really fair to editors who are not on such platforms.
- The advantage of having the legend in the caption section is that editors do not have to click through to read it (plus legends that I guess it would be difficult for you to expand (like 2019) appear blurry at the scale currently shown). And I would also suggest that things published on commons should be primarily done so with use on Wikipedia in mind, not really off-wiki. Cheers, Number 57 03:45, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Number 57: My nerdiness for elections does not stop at Wikipedia and I will enjoy that hobby on social media with other people, including fellow editors. However, beyond presentation, finding data, finding shapefiles, etc, I do not have discussions about my problems with Wikipedia pages or take their opinions into consideration. Anytime I've had a qualm about a page, such as existing data or text, I've gone to the talk page and spoke my grievances. And any editor can message me on my talk page or a Wikipedia page (such as you have) and I will be here to respond.
- Everything I post on wikicommons I do so with Wikipedia in mind. However, wikicommons is not just a database for wiki foundation images but also has the aim of being a media file repository that "makes available public domain and freely-licensed educational media content to all." As such, I want to make sure everyone who wishes to use my images (and I'm not talking about election nerd twitter) can do so without having to go through the process of adding a legend. Wowzers122 (talk) 05:18, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
- Apologies, I wasn't trying to say you shouldn't do this beyond Wikipedia, just that discussions regarding how to do things on Wikipedia (which would include presentation) should be done on Wikipedia so that all editors have the opportunity to chip in (there have been a few times in the last couple of years when editors have said that they made a change as a result of a discussion with other editors off-wiki, which isn't really inclusive or fair). [edit]You removed my edit on the Luba Kingdom for not citing a source but I did cite a source at the end. https://www.ucpress.edu/book/9780520334908/the-rainbow-and-the-kings If you want to dicuss it further, discord is more convenient for me, I mentioned you in the server there as well. 2024 Rwandan general election
[edit]Hi Wowzers122, thank you for reminding me about "Thats not how openings are written", so I will follow the example in MOS:TITLEABSENTBOLD next time in other articles.
For "some information were removed," I thought the list of parties in "Member parties of Rwanda's ruling government coalition ..." was unnecessary, but apparently not. Is there other relevant information I removed?
I am confused about "a lot of the new wording sounds weird and unencyclopedic." Could you be more specific and give me 3 quotes? Or was it just the active voice? 174.92.25.207 (talk) 04:09, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
- I am having a hard time seeing how my "wording sounds weird" while the following weird grammatical errors exist earlier on this talk page:
- "social medias" (correctly, either "socials" or "social media accounts")
- "a qualm about a page, such as existing data or text" (missing "about" after "such as")
- "spoke my grievances" (correctly, air/express/vent/voice)
- There is also unnatural English in the original version such as "expressed thanks to voters" (more Google hits for "thanked voters") EDIT: the actual reason is because I usually see the more common "expressed his gratitude to voters".
- I will perform some less controversial copyediting without removing any facts. Please state any specific concerns. 174.92.25.207 (talk) 04:46, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
- Both "expressed thanks to voters" and "thanked voters" are grammatically correct and natural. The former is more formal, while the latter is more casual.
- I didn't like what you removed in shortening phrases like "approved constitutional amendments" to just "allow". I feel like it removes the specifics of what the referendum did and changes it to something more basic. I'm also not a fan of changing "Kagame told France 24 that he intended to run for president again in the 2024 election" to "promised France 24 to run in 2024." Saying he intended to do something and that he promised to run gives a different connotation.
- For weird wording, removing words like "announced" feels weird. The original sentence was "Kagame announced his bid for a fourth term on 20 September 2023 in an interview," and you changed to "Kagame bid for a fourth term on 20 September 2023 in a Jeune Afrique interview." I don't like how that sounds.
- Yes, I would prefer if the parties in the coalition endorsing were listed. I also didn't like removing "if registered in time" to just "wanted," or removing the detail that Ingabire had previously been disqualified from running to just that he was convicted. I'm not a fan of removing the fact that the three candidates were the only legal candidates running last time. Lastly, I didn't like changing "Kagame pledged to continue his policies upon reelection" to "pledged unchanged policies."
- Maybe I'm being too picky, and if you think so, I won't stop you from re-adding your changes. However, please don't do what you did to the lead again. Wowzers122 (talk) 05:05, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
- I was indeed wrong to write the unnatural "Kagame bid for". After rereading that, I agree it feels weird, and I think the original "Kagame announced his bid for" is more common. You were not "being too picky." I am in the minority of Wikipedia editors that cares about WP:TERSE, while the majority just uses long sentences with passive voice and buried verbs, and this time I might have cut too many words.
- "intended" vs "promised", I used "promised" based on the election promise collocation. I suppose promises are made to voters not media. I'll leave the word "intended" with its connotations, as well as other DUE POV things like the only legal candidates.
- It is a bit like quoting out of context to say I shortened '"approved constitutional amendments" to just "allow"'. The full context is that I changed 'A referendum in 2015 approved constitutional amendments" that would allow ...' to 'A constitutional referendum in 2015 allowed ...' I can't imagine it could do anything other than approve amendments, but I will avoid changing that part as I can't think of how to squeeze the word "amendments" in. You seem to dislike non-monetary nouns after "pledged". Ok, for consistency, I won't change the other two "pledged to"s either.
- Ingabire's pronouns are she/her. I think you are claiming causation for "Ingabire had previously been disqualified." The article is not clear, and I will try to reword the sentences to emphasize the causation.
- I won't touch the lead sentence, but I need to remove "by many" per WP:WEASEL.
- I might tag "if registered in time" with {{clarify}}. I think I'm missing the context and background as to why that's important. Perhaps you could edit in an explanation. 174.92.25.207 (talk) 06:27, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
- Maybe I'm being too picky, and if you think so, I won't stop you from re-adding your changes. However, please don't do what you did to the lead again. Wowzers122 (talk) 05:05, 18 July 2024 (UTC)

Jefferson
[edit]Howdy. In the coming days, I'm going to open up an RFC on how to present Jefferson in the 1796 United States presidential election's infobox. I think putting "(elected Vice President)" into a footnote, would be best. So far, we can't seem to get enough editor input. GoodDay (talk) 19:21, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
