Your GA nomination of Giant panda

The article Giant panda you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Giant panda and Talk:Giant panda/GA2 for issues which need to be addressed. Giant panda

Should probably add a subsection on the fossil record and genomics like in red panda. LittleJerry (talk) 21:20, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

I'll add something later today after work. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 03:11, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
LittleJerry, I started a draft in my notebook that I should finish within the following few days. I'm also wondering why you're not nominating Tiger for FAC. It appears to be comprehensive, and you seem to have addressed all of the suggestions. Anyways, it's always good to see you. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 21:59, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
I will soon. Just finishing up a few things. LittleJerry (talk) 22:04, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Elephant edits

I don't see any bare links in my edit ([1]) and I believe their are basic grammatical and other corrections which were salutary. Wholesale revert rather than pruning was done. Zenon.Lach (talk) 04:19, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

@Zenon.Lach: Please take a step back, and relax. Go to the Teahouse, where new comers like you are welcomed to ask any questions related to Wikipedia editing. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 04:36, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
Okay. Thanks. I left a note on the article talk page, also. I am being civil and I apologize if it appears I am ticked. Just the way I write. Yours, Zenon.Lach (talk) 04:40, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
Zenon.Lach, you should also probably stay away from FAs for now. Elephant is already cited by reliable sources but you tried to replace them with News articles because you think they are "correct". LittleJerry (talk) 21:55, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
Okay but to be clear I did not know BBC and CNN are not considered reliable sources. And the accusation was thrown around that my edits were unsourced and comprised barereflinks, neither of which was true. Zenon.Lach (talk) 00:07, 18 May 2024 (UTC)
@Zenon.Lach: Can you please move on to other articles? Thanks. You know, as a newbie (which I'm assuming you are), it's not very wise to argue against experienced editors this early in your wiki-career. You don't see what's wrong with your edits because you're fairly new here. I suggest watching some tutorials or reading policy/guideline pages. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 06:02, 18 May 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Giant panda

On 3 June 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Giant panda, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the distinctive coloration of the giant panda appears to serve as camouflage in both winter and summer? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Giant panda. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Giant panda), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Congratulations and welcome to WP:QAI! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:01, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

Magdalena Hinterdobler is on the Main page today, together with an opera that reviewers deemed not interesting and too obscure for our general readers. The soprano thought differently, - listen and see. - Also on the Main page: a TFA by sadly missed Vami_IV who was a project member. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:42, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

did you listen and see? - today's story has a pic of a woman holding her cat, a DYK of 5 years ago - the recent pics show 2 orange tip butterflies --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:30, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: I saw the photo, and it's wonderful. I wasn't alive in 1957, but I have to say, what a picture, and what quality for the time. As for the song, I don't know what you're talking about. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 15:54, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
I also like the image! None of the people I wrote about was born on 14 May, so I looked for a different connection to the day. - song? I gave you (and others) a yt link because I had nominated the two singers you can watch singing and talking for DYK, with mixed results, to keep it short. I don't understand how the rarely performed opera they deal with could be deemed "not interesting" - seeing how enthusiastic they are about it, - and if you have more time watch the conductor as well. Yes, it's in German, but they all talk in a very expressive manner. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:03, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for improving articles in May! - Today's story mentions a concert I loved to hear and a piece I loved to sing in choir, 150 years old OTD. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:54, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Snake lead

Hello. I don't understand why you (rightfully) think one image of a shark can represent the whole group but not a snake. Snakes are much less diverse in form; basically scaly, elongated and legless. LittleJerry (talk) 15:03, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

@LittleJerry: You see, the issue with your perspective is that you only emphasize on the limblessness and body plan of snakes. You don't consider body color, thickness and scale texture. I believe the picture you used is a pit viper, however this serpent cannot speak for all snakes. To begin with, its scales are rougher than those of say, a Burmese python and it's much, much thinner. You may be right to say that all snakes have the "same" body plan, but so do lizards and many animal groups. Using a pit viper also has an additional drawback because, as you are well aware, not all snakes are green. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 16:39, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
PS, I'll create a collage with four snake species: a king cobra, Burmese python, that green pit viper and a Brahminy blind snake. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 16:51, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
Differences in color, thickness and scale texture are relatively superficial and not important for the lead image. That doesn't matter to the average person. Being legless and elongated is a very simple body plan and the most recognizable feature of snakes. By contrast a group like Carnivora could not possibly be represented by one image. LittleJerry (talk) 17:04, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
@LittleJerry: I created a collage File:Snake collage (1).jpg, but I think it can be better, maybe like this one with 8 species. Your thoughts? Wolverine XI (talk to me) 19:51, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
Don't like the cropping. I think we should display the images like for rodent. LittleJerry (talk) 21:50, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

Drive-by nomination

Please don’t make drive-by nominations, as you did at World War I. Your main significant contributions were archiving sources and adding them. Don’t think you actually added significant amounts of prose, just wikitext. 48JCL TALK 22:06, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

Either way, you really haven’t done much with the prose. 48JCL TALK 22:34, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
GA instructions doesn't require that. As long as I've improved the article's sourcing, then that's fine. Please avoid areas you have little experience in. It will help save editor time. 22:38, 12 June 2024 (UTC) Wolverine XI (talk to me)

Question from Faketuxedo (20:16, 19 June 2024)

Hi! I'm writing an article about YouTuber Joel Haver. I have a question about using potentially unreliable sources as secondary sources for opinions, and what constitutes an unreliable source. Joel is best known for specific things like rotoscoping and his feature film output by his audience and is a large and well known content creator. This is well known among his community, however media reporting on this, while not nonexistent, is uncommon and often is from smaller, virtually unknown sources. Does their size automatically indicate that they are unreliable? Is it okay to use dubious sources if i use many to demonstrate a public consensus on an opinion? To me it seems appropriate given that I am not presenting fringe opinions and there is a good sense of consensus on media reporting as to what he is best known for and basic facts about Joel. The draft in question: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Joel_Haver --Faketuxedo (talk) 20:16, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

GA nomination of Charles De Geer

Hi, I am concerned that you closed the GA review of Charles De Geer very quickly and without a really thorough review. You voiced some very overarching concerns concerning what you saw as a lack of focus in the article. I replied to that as well as I could, asking for more clarity on your side and detailing my reasoning in the few cases of concrete concerns you put forward. By simply noting more "more work is needed" and closing the nomination the discussion was however cut short. I have never experienced this before. As a reviewer, I would expect you to provide some serious guidance and make a bit more of a commitment in helping me as nominator improve the article. I am willing to work on the article in an as constructive way as I can (with the caveat that, as I wrote, these coming days and weeks I am on vacation and only intermittently at my computer). I hope that you may reconsider your choice and re-open the nomination to work, as reviewer, constructively with me to improve the article. Kind regards, Yakikaki (talk) 18:24, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

I'm not sure about that. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 09:00, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
Wolverine XI, I came here to ask about some of the reviews as well. I'm looking at the twelve open reviews you have. Some of them have been waiting on you for a while; nominators will often consider it rude to take a review and then leave it untouched for weeks, and some of them are getting there. There are a few where you say you're going to complete it "today" but then don't. More importantly, the reviews you have done seem to be very shallow. There's some discretion over how closely you go over the article, but I don't see any indication that you checked the content of the sources, which would mean you didn't actually verify whether the article meets the requirements on original research or copyright violations (arguably the most important criteria in the GA process). Regarding this specific review of Charles De Geer, it's on the heavier end of early life focus for a biography, but there's a good case for keeping it, certainly not such a violation that it's worth an automatic failure. Even if some does need to be trimmed, it's not a structural issue that would require significant work to fix. There's a learning curve and it's okay to not have perfect reviews right away—my early ones had some of the same issues—but it's not ideal when you're trying to do a dozen of them at the same time before learning best practices. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 18:48, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
Well, I took on all those reviews because I have the rest of the month to myself, but you know, there's a certain someone who keeps taking up all of my time. I regret not being able to complete the reviews on time. Regarding the source review, I usually just examine one or two citations from the article, and even then, I consistently fail to mention this in my reviews. Since my career is still in its early stages, I'll work to get better. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 09:09, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
OK, then I'll take the issue to the discussion page over at the GA project. Yakikaki (talk) 09:29, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

3 July is the birthday of Leoš Janáček, and I'm happy I had a meaningful DYK in 2021. - It's also the birthday of Franz Kafka, and I uploaded pics from his family's album seen in Berlin. Thank you for your interest in Robert Schumann, - I focused on Clara Schumann. Do you think that mentioning a composer's list of compositions in their infobox, as you can see in Janáček, makes sense? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:26, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

It really depends, but I think having a composer list in the infobox is perfectly normal, or am I missing something? Wolverine XI (talk to me) 17:44, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
I miss it for Schumann. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:28, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
Libuše Domanínská, the subject of yesterday's story, would have turned 100 today, but I missed that ;) - Overnight, Tamara Milashkina became GA and Lando Bartolini went to the Main page. I made my story about his almost unbelievable career, from Luigi in Il tabarro in Philadelphia in 1968 (with a nod to Liberty) up to Calaf in Turandot in Beijing in 1999 ;) - 4 July is also the birthday of Brian Boulton who was a pioneer of a concise infobox in 2013, including a list of compositions. I added one to Schumann but it was removed, and I miss it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:42, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
Pictured on the Main page: Brian's Mozart family grand tour, my story today, and Mozart related to all three items of music on my talk: our 2023 concert, an opera in a theatre where a Mozart premiere took place, and those remembered, Martti Wallén, a bass, and Liana Isakadze, a violinist from Georgia (whose article would be better with more details about her music-making). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:51, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for improving article quality in July! - Today's story is about a photographer who took iconic pictures, especially View from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on Manhattan, 9/11, yesterday's was a great mezzo, and on Thursday we watched a sublime ballerina. If that's not enough my talk offers chamber music from two amazing concerts. - Share with your granddad, perhaps ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:21, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

FAC

I take it you're going to wait some months before getting narwhal to FAC. I definitely would like to see some more cetacean FAs and have some on my radar, but I'm gonna work on some non-mammals before then. All I can say is to look though every single line and make sure it is supported by the next cite. You can also look at this book. Good luck. LittleJerry (talk) 22:11, 13 August 2024 (UTC)

Yeah, I think it will take up to 9 months for narwhal to be seen at FAC again. In the interim, I'll continue working with GANs and carry out my other tasks here. I bought that 2014 book last month, so I'll be giving it more attention. I also note that you say you wanna work on non-mammal articles; if that includes ostrich, cassowary, skink, giant squid, great white shark or mudskippers--please let me know. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 04:36, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
As of right now, my next planned FAC project is clownfish. I have been thinking about GWS more recently, but that article is already well built. I think you should aim for six months. LittleJerry (talk) 22:57, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
Good choice on clownfish; seems like a reasonable animal to go for. About narwhal, I don't think 6 months will align perfectly with my calendar, as I have something big planned for February. Other than that, I think you should try to push great white shark to FA, at least before the end of the decade. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 13:39, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
Another thing you can do is look at old FAs at WP:URFA/2020. You could review them or declare them "Satisfactory" (three of these takes them off the list) All of my pre-2015 articles are there like giraffe and elephant. LittleJerry (talk) 22:58, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
Say less; I'll check it out later today. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 05:10, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
On second thought, LittleJerry, I don't think I have the right to review articles in this list and declare them "Satisfactory". I think that should be left to the editors who know what to expect from an FA, which, quite frankly, doesn't include me. Maybe after I promote a few articles, I'll have the confidence to help with the backlog, but until then, it's a no from me. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 22:41, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

Narwhal article

Great to see that you're attempting to improve Narwhal to FA status (I might assist if I have time because I'm working on getting an Earth science topic to FT). However, you reverted one of my edits that unpiped inappropriately piped links.

From MOS:NOPIPE, a MOS page:

As per WP:NOTBROKEN and § Link specificity above, do not use a piped link where it is possible to use a redirected term that fits well within the scope of the text.

We want direct links not redirects. I strongly suggest you read the linked guidelines, as well as the reasons not to bypass a redirect on WP:NOTBROKEN. Also, who's "we"? Does not violate MOS at all. Wrong. They are a violation of MOS guidelines per the quote from the MOS subpage I linked and the text I quoted, as the purpose of those piped links is to bypass helpful redirects.

Also, If you disagree, ask me on my talk page instead of reverting. You did not do this. Instead, you reverted with an incorrect objection and told me to discuss it on your talk page before reverting, which I'm only doing because you do not understand why they should be unpiped and I follow WP:1RR. I kindly ask you to not do it again in the future. ZZZ'S 23:24, 22 August 2024 (UTC)

@Zzzs: I read the guideline pages, and I see that you have a point, but I still don't agree with the Linnaeus redirect link. The other links you altered seemed reasonable nonetheless. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 03:29, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
Alright then. I'll restore the edit, but I won't change the Linnaeus piped link. ZZZ'S 04:31, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
No problem. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 05:13, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

Orpington Boxing Club

The article is too significant to put up for speedy deletion. The article cites, media, books, television and notable people from the club. Please take a Look at St.Paul’s Boxing Club and Repton Boxing Club. The article regarding Orpington Boxing Club is worthy to be placed in Wikipedia as it’s the oldest club in Kent, second oldest in UK and the world. Box32 (talk) 07:47, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

Orpington Boxing Club

Dale Youth boxing club

On the basis of speedy deletion , this article would also meet the criteria ?

Repton Boxing Club

Also this club ?

Orpington Boxing Club is to significant for a speedy deletion.

I have also added sections, plus books and television. Box32 (talk) 09:17, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

Your NPP reviews of Chong Tsun and Dmitri Pestryakov

Hey there, Wolverine XI! As part of the September 2024 NPP Backlog drive re-review process, I wanted to let you know that I have nominated two article you patrolled – Chong Tsun and Dmitri Pestryakov – for deletion. The reason for this is that I was unable to find enough coverage from third-party sources to meet WP:GNG or WP:SPORTCRIT. No action is needed on your part, but feel free to let me know if you have any questions. Good luck on the rest of the drive! JTtheOG (talk) 02:32, 21 September 2024 (UTC)

Assassination of Imad Mughniyeh

What's your problem? Nominate it for deletion, but what you're doing now is against Wikipedia rules. If you think it's an unsuitable article, nominate it for deletion. This has been the practice for a long time. You cannot impose your opinions as if we were in a dictatorship! EpicAdventurer (talk) 10:41, 21 September 2024 (UTC)

@EpicAdventurer: Considering how well it is currently covered at Imad Mughniyeh, I don't think the topic needs its own article. Additionally, this is a somewhat small event, therefore is not in need of more extensive coverage. I would also say that you were merely duplicating information, so much so that the information at Imad Mughniyeh went into more detail about his assassination. I chose not to propose deletion to the article because the title would work quite well as a redirect. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 11:05, 21 September 2024 (UTC)

Folklore of the Dominican Republic

Hello good morning so I already made my decision to rewrite the article in my own words to authenticize its content. Can I least keep the sources for references or do I have to use another source? BlkGeneral2000 (talk) 10:50, 21 September 2024 (UTC)

@BlkGeneral2000: Just get rid of the infringement whichever way you can. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 11:13, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
@Wolverine XI, when there is copyright violation in the page history, but it's not the entire article - ie, if there is non-infringing content that can be saved - please don't tag for G12. Request WP:REVDEL of the infringing diffs instead. Thanks! -- asilvering (talk) 16:16, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
asilvering: Oh, sorry, will request revdel next time. Thanks for this information. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 16:35, 21 September 2024 (UTC)

Your NPP review of Justin Janssen

Hey there, Wolverine XI. As part of the September 2024 NPP Backlog drive re-review process, I wanted to let you know that I have nominated an article you patrolled, Justin Janssen, for deletion. Recent editing activity

I noticed your editing at Woolly mammoth and Columbian mammoth (and to a lesser extent at Ocelot). I'd like to ask that you try to consolidate these kinds of tiny edits into bigger ones so that the article history does not get clogged. In less than two hours, you made 208 seperate edits to the Woolly Mammoth article, each with minimal to no change and a byte count in the single digits. The same is true for the Columbian Mammoth article, only with 89 edits in roughly half an hour. As I mentioned above, this makes looking through article revision histories very tedious, and you'd be doing everyone a service by consolidating edits like these into one or two big ones. Thanks in advance. The Morrison Man (talk) 18:37, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

@The Morrison Man: The thing is that I don't usually make "big edits". I like sticking to smaller, speedier and more convenient ways of editing. Usually, I forget that people use page histories for monitoring because I hardly use them. I'll try to tone it down a bit, but I can't promise those "one or two big edits" just like Shawn Michaels can't promise a return to the squared circle since he's well into his late 50s. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 21:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
I don't need you to promise one or two, just that you do not use 208 edits to make arbitrary changes to 64 templates on a page. Thanks The Morrison Man (talk) 21:16, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
You've just done it again. 181 edits on 57 templates on the common ostrich page in the span of 141 minutes. That's 1.28 edits per minute, and I can count the ones in the double digits on two fingers. Come on man The Morrison Man (talk) 20:45, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
@The Morrison Man: I'm not sure if you are genuinely interested in my editing history or if you have this page on your watchlist. In any case, the problem is that I occasionally run out of ideas for adjustments, so I just stick to the kinds of edits I usually perform in such situations. My judgment can be clouded at times because I'm not always in the best of moods. I'll try my hardest to limit the number of edits I make to animal articles. I apologize for any inconvenience. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 12:04, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
Consider doing this instead: create a version of the article on your own userspace and tinker around with as many edits as you like. Then after you're satisfied with a large enough chunk, put those into the article and update your userspace article with the main one as needed. TangoFett (talk) 13:05, 28 September 2024 (UTC)

Please make sure your edit summaries are accurate

Hi, Wolverine XI. I notice sometimes you make edits like this, and then you write in your edit summary that you performed a copy-edit. Copy-editing has a very specific meaning. Adding, substantially rewriting, or removing material is not copy-editing. I'm not sure if you're clicking the wrong edit summary by mistake, or if you don't know what copy-editing is, but please keep this in mind for the future. Thank you. Fishing cat GA review

Hi, Wolverine. I've just about completed the GA review. Even though the article is not enormously different from your first submission, I think it addresses the issues that made it a quickfail when grungaloo reviewed it back in March (I've patched up a few things I thought were still possibly lacking). I therefore thing it's broad enough in its coverage to meet criterion 3(a), although I assume some aspects would need to be elaborated on to reach FA levels of coverage. I didn't see anything obviously wrong with neutrality, stabillity, or image usage except for alt text which has since been fixed, all of the sources seem reliable and used correctly, and I found one instance of close paraphrasing that has since been fixed. Grammar, spelling, layout, and MoS adherence seemed fine, and I fixed a few small issues that I found that honestly wouldn't have prevented a GA pass anyway.

I couldn't find any OR in the lead, taxonomy, distribution, or conservation sections, although I did raise yellow flags for the characteristics, behaviour, and threats sections. For each one of these, I only found one ostensible issue, so if you can clear these up for me (and provided grungaloo has no major objections to this), then I can pass the article. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 05:04, 10 October 2024 (UTC)

I will be away for 12 hours, so I can't address those issues at the moment. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 05:15, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
No problem! I'll mark the review as on hold presently, and I'll also re-look at those sources to see if I can't resolve the issue myself. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 05:22, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
@Wolverine XI: Bit of an update: I'm going to postpone the final part of the review just until the Internet Archive is back online, as that's just going to streamline things a bunch. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 23:21, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
Got it. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 02:34, 11 October 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for improving articles on October! - My story today is a cantata 300 years old, based on a hymn 200 years old when the cantata was composed, based on a psalm some thousand years old, - so said the 2015 DYK hook. I had forgotten the discussion on the talk. --

Inactivity during reviews

I've noticed that you've opened two reviews and then abandoned them at Talk:Kawa model/GA1 and Talk:Sleeping Beauty (1959 film)/GA3. If you don't intend to complete a review in a reasonable timeframe, it's courteous to return them, especially if you've begun a second review after you abandoned the first one. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 03:52, 16 October 2024 (UTC)

@Thebiguglyalien: I didn't abandon the Kawa model review, the nominator, Significa liberdade, did. Regarding the other review, I'll pick it up after I'm done explaining basic algebra to my sister. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 17:18, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
Wolverine XI: I never received a notification that you had finished your review, and on 22 September, you stated you were going to do a review of the references in the following week. You never followed up on that review. Given this, I did not believe your review was complete. Significa liberdade (she/her) (talk) 17:00, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
@Significa liberdade: As you know, I began the review as usual, checking over the prose, photos, and citation formats. I planned to conduct a source review the following week, but I saw no sign of you being aware that a GAN had taken place. You did not respond to the GA review or address any of the points I've raised. This deterred me from conducting a source review since I believed your interest was lacking. I waited for a response or an amendment to the article to indicate that you were collaborating, but none of that happened. I then opted to fail the article for your lack of participation. Also, one thing to note is that whether or not the review was completed, the issues that were raised should have been addressed. I believe my actions were just, thank you. Wolverine XI (talk to me) 17:27, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
@Wolverine X-eye, I'm coming to this late, but I'm really alarmed that you failed a GA review without even pinging the nominator to check if they saw your review in the first place. If I were the nominator, I too would have waited for the source review you said was coming. Please extend more courtesy to nominators. -- asilvering (talk) 17:25, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
