Question

Is there anyway of extending 2601:85:C102:BBC0:B18C:2999:D647:2B2C (talk · contribs · WHOIS) block to longer than 31 hours? This idiot has done this numerous times before just reverting all of my edits with the "Yankees10 is a moron" summary. This is unnecessary personal attacks and more than just vandalism. This person will just be back again with this nonsense after the 31 hours.-- Yankees10 19:04, 29 November 2019 (UTC)

I blocked the range for 2 years, as this has indeed been going on for a good while. Widr (talk) 19:48, 29 November 2019 (UTC)

New RC Patroller, am I doing this right?

Hello! I've noticed that you've blocked several users that I've reported for vandalism. I am fairly new to Wikipedia and just started patrolling today, so I just wanted to make sure that I am doing everything correctly in terms of patrolling recent changes.

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

911ChickenCop (talk) 23:28, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

You are doing OK so far. Just make sure you do not report users to AIV too early, unless the vandalism is egregious. Widr (talk) 23:34, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

Advice, please

Please could you take a look at the vandalism I reverted here [1]. It seems a bit pointless issuing warnings to the individual IPs. There's not enough activity to justify going to WP:RFPP. A rangeblock on the whole of the University of Toronto would be a bit heavy-handed. What is the correct course of action here? Philip Trueman (talk) 17:29, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

There's really nothing to do at this point, with such a few vandal edits. Widr (talk) 18:26, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

Hey, guys...just wanted you to know I further cut it. The bit about the app seemed highly trivial, and far more promotional for the app developers than informative for the school. I'm under the weather again, so if i don't see you guy before the holidays, please enjoy. Merry Christmas! John from Idegon (talk) 17:23, 14 December 2019 (UTC)

Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry

This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well Widr. MarnetteD|Talk 17:24, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

Can you revoke their edit talk page access since they are abusing it after the block. ~~ CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 12:33, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

You may wish to revoke talk page access.--Cahk (talk) 10:53, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

I gave this user a level-1 warning for vandalism and reported them to AIV, seeing an inappropriate edit to Religious views of Adolf Hitler and fearing that this was a vandalism-only account. However, I really should have waited for this user to make more edits, to see if they heeded the warning. User:Paleontologist99 gave this user another warning, presumably in error, even though this user had only made a single edit to Wikipedia so far. I don't know if you took this into account when applying the block to this user (according to the ARV menu on Twinkle, users should have at least 4 warnings on their talk page before being reported), and I just want to make sure that we're on the same page here. ωικιωαrrιorᑫᑫ1ᑫ 17:23, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

Sometimes one edit is more than enough. Warnings are not required before blocking obvious trolls or other types of time-wasters. Widr (talk) 17:37, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

Help. It's coming from several nodes on the same network. One IP is 66.213.24.107.

It's been going on about a month now, and if memory serves, it started over some POV pushing from an IP, where they stated they'll keep it up, and basically daring us to block the library network. John from Idegon (talk) 18:59, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

Happy First Edit Day!

Date of Birth wrongly mentioned

Dear Sir, My name is Akshay Anand and I was informed by a family member that on my page listed on your site my date of birth has been mentioned wrongly. I checked the same to see and to my surprise I did see that Wikipedia has mentioned my date of birth wrongly. Since the page is about me and I am a celebrity actor and film maker I would not like my age to be mentioned on your Wikipedia site or if it has to then let it only be by the person who the page is about. This way any Tom Dick or Harry can visit the page make an edit of the celebrity without his knowledge. This amounts to identification theft. I would like to request you to please delete this information or when someone posts it, to please verify if they have the proper authority to do so. This information maligns my name and falsely asserts my age which is wrong, by someone who is an anonymous editor of a page that is about someone else. Who has given this anonymous person the authority to do so. I feel so vulnerable and unsafe when something like this happens as it has the possibility of ruining my career. After I saw that I tried my best to go and change it but it says that all my edits have been reverted. If my edit is being reverted then how come the edit made before me by some anonymous person got incorporated on the information about me. Please do the needful asap as it has really upset me and damages my reputation.

Thank you, Akshay Anand — Preceding unsigned comment added by Axayanandd (talkcontribs) 08:21, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Munderscore

Hi, I'm just reviewing Munderscore (talk · contribs)'s unblock request. Your indef block of them was entirely correct, but their unblock request (which basically amounts to an admission of doing something dumb as a university student) seems believable if we AGF - and especially given that the editor who created the vandal article has also owned up to it. I've asked Munderscore what they intend to edit, but are you inclined to unblock here if their response is acceptable? Regards, Nick-D (talk) 07:48, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Considering that there were a number accounts, including older ones, messing around, I think a checkuser consultation might not be a bad idea. I'll try to summon one here, just in case. Widr (talk) 09:10, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Help

The edit war at Honda Civic Type R is getting way out of hand, there is also a RfPP report. - FlightTime (open channel) 17:32, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

RfPP Bon Scott

Thank you for reviewing this request. I do need some guidance, I understand you rational on the report, however this is an on going issue with all of AC/DC member pages. My question is, would a RfC at Talk:AC/DC be appropriate for this type of issue (consensus for indef semi for all concerned pages) and if it is, would consensus be effective in getting the pages protected ? This issue of IP's changing Australia to Scottish has been a issue for years, it would be net positive not to have to keep reverting these incorrect changes. Just looking for some input to help me decide if I should move forward on this. Thank you and thank you for what you do. Cheers, - FlightTime (open channel) 21:22, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

I was just clearing the backlog there, but yes, any type of broader discussion or RfC would certainly be the best option in this case. Thanks. Widr (talk) 21:29, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Your recent AIV block

Hi there. I was just reviewing reports at WP:AIV and you got there a few moments before me in dealing with a bot-report about User:82.112.90.223. As a very new admin myself, could you explain to me the rationale for a 2 year block on that IP? It seems to go way beyond all reasonable blocking guidelines, and as they hadn't received any warning this month, yet had tripped the abuse filter six times today for trying to make the same lead-blanking edit, they were clearly up to no good. But is it normal practice to be so severe for bot-reported vandalism where the IP user sees no warnings, and where do I find guidance on handling that sort of block? In the past I've had other admins refuse to block an IP for longer than a week after making nasty physical threats against me, so this seemed unusually severe and unwarranted for such a mild incident? Many thanks, Nick Moyes (talk) 10:47, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

Vandalism is vandalism, no matter if it's reported by users or bots. As there's been practically nothing but unconstructive editing from that IP since 2016, coupled with previous blocks, a considerably longer block is well justified, in my opinion. Deciding on the block length is always up to the admin discretion, though common sense should be used more often here. For example, I see absolutely no point in blocking a school for 24 hours after a 3 year block has just recently expired. Widr (talk) 11:13, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
