WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 6

Newsletter • January 2016

Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:

What comes next

Some good news: the Wikimedia Foundation has renewed WikiProject X. This means we can continue focusing on making WikiProjects better.

During our first round of work, we created a prototype WikiProject based on two ideas: (1) WikiProjects should clearly present things for people to do, and (2) The content of WikiProjects should be automated as much as possible. We launched pilots, and for the most part it works. But this approach will not work for the long term. While it makes certain aspects of running a WikiProject easier, it makes the maintenance aspects harder.

We are working on a major overhaul that will address these issues. New features will include:

  • Creating WikiProjects by simply filling out a form, choosing which reports you want to generate for your project. This will work with existing bots in addition to the Reports Bot reports. (Of course, you can also have sections curated by humans.)
  • One-click button to join a WikiProject, with optional notifications.
  • Be able to define your WikiProject's scope within the WikiProject itself by listing relevant pages and categories, eliminating the need to tag every talk page with a banner. (You will still be allowed to do that, of course. It just won't be required.)

The end goal is a collaboration tool that can be used by WikiProjects but also by any edit-a-thon or group of people that want to coordinate on improving articles. Though implemented as an extension, the underlying content will be wikitext, meaning that you can continue to use categories, templates, and other features as you normally would.

This will take a lot of work, and we are just getting started. What would you like to see? I invite you to discuss on our talk page.

Until next time,

Harej (talk) 02:53, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 7

Newsletter • February 2016

This month:

One database for Wikipedia requests

Development of the extension for setting up WikiProjects, as described in the last issue of this newsletter, is currently underway. No terribly exciting news on this front.

In the meantime, we are working on a prototype for a new service we hope to announce soon. The problem: there are requests scattered all across Wikipedia, including requests for new articles and requests for improvements to existing articles. We Wikipedians are very good at coming up with lists of things to do. But once we write these lists, where do they end up? How can we make them useful for all editors—even those who do not browse the missing articles lists, or the particular WikiProjects that have lists?

Introducing Wikipedia Requests, a new tool to centralize the various lists of requests around Wikipedia. Requests will be tagged by category and WikiProject, making it easier to find requests based on what your interests are. Accompanying this service will be a bot that will let you generate reports from this database on any wiki page, including WikiProjects. This means that once a request is filed centrally, it can syndicated all throughout Wikipedia, and once it is fulfilled, it will be marked as "complete" throughout Wikipedia. The idea for this service came about when I saw that it was easy to put together to-do lists based on database queries, but it was harder to do this for human-generated requests when those requests are scattered throughout the wiki, siloed throughout several pages. This should especially be useful for WikiProjects that have overlapping interests.

The newsletter this month is fairly brief; not a lot of news, just checking in to say that we are hard at work and hope to have more for you soon.

Until next time,

Sanders RfC

This. Regards, Xenophrenic (talk) 04:26, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

Cool. I'll take this as proof that I can pester an admin into changing his mind if I disagree with an action he takes. Calidum ¤ 04:28, 15 April 2016 (UTC)
That doesn't speak well about what you think qualifies as "proof". Of course Wikipedia policy allows you to challenge administrative decisions if you disagree that said decisions were made correctly, but just "pestering" an admin likely will not work, just as it did not work for the several editors who tried that in the above example. It actually took considerable detailed explanation and discussion of why such an action was problematic before the action was reconsidered. I would recommend that same procedure to you, rather than your proposed method of "pestering", as most likely to succeed in getting problematic actions corrected. Oh, and FYI, a subsequent related RfC has since made all the previous hand-wringing a moot issue by effectively instituting the removal of the |religion= field from the infobox altogether. Regards, Xenophrenic (talk) 16:50, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

Please explain

Could you please explain to me why you see me as an editor you need to frequently monitor and go after? At one time, we were compatriots, not enemies. I am totally unclear as to how, why, and when things went from 0-150 on the good to abysmal AGF scale. -- WV 18:24, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

As far as I can remember, we've interacted maybe three times in the past six months or so. I don't know how that's me frequently monitoring and going after you. Either way, you have a tendency to do the same with several editors with whom you've had disagreements with in the past; MaranoFan is just the tip of the iceberg in that regard. I'm glad to see you've committed to refraining from ANI posts, and hopefully you can continue to improve your interactions with others. Calidum ¤ 13:52, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 8

Newsletter • March / April 2016

This month:

Transclude article requests anywhere on Wikipedia

In the last issue of the WikiProject X Newsletter, I discussed the upcoming Wikipedia Requests system: a central database for outstanding work on Wikipedia. I am pleased to announce Wikipedia Requests is live! Its purpose is to supplement automatically generated lists, such as those from SuggestBot, Reports bot, or Wikidata. It is currently being demonstrated on WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health (which I work on as part of my NIOSH duties) and WikiProject Women scientists.

Adding a request is as simple as filling out a form. Just go to the Add form to add your request. Adding sources will help ensure that your request is fulfilled more quickly. And when a request is fulfilled, simply click "mark as complete" and it will be removed from all the lists it's on. All at the click of a button! (If anyone is concerned, all actions are logged.)

With this new service is a template to transclude these requests: {{Wikipedia Requests}}. It's simple to use: add the template to a page, specifying article=, category=, or wikiproject=, and the list will be transcluded. For example, for requests having to do with all living people, just do {{Wikipedia Requests|category=Living people}}. Use these lists on WikiProjects but also for edit-a-thons where you want a convenient list of things to do on hand. Give it a shot!

Help us build our list!

The value of Wikipedia Requests comes from being a centralized database. The long work to migrating individual lists into this combined list is slowly underway. As of writing, we have 883 open tasks logged in Wikipedia Requests. We need your help building this list.

If you know of a list of missing articles, or of outstanding tasks for existing articles, that you would like to migrate to this new system, head on over to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Requests#Transition project and help out. Doing this will help put your list in front of more eyes—more than just your own WikiProject.

An open database means new tools

WikiProject X maintains a database that associates article talk pages (and draft talk pages) with WikiProjects. This database powers many of the reports that Reports bot generates. However, until very recently, this database was not made available to others who might find its data useful. It's only common sense to open up the database and let others build tools with it.

And indeed: Citation Hunt, the game to add citations to Wikipedia, now lets you filter by WikiProject, using the data from our database.

Are you a tool developer interested in using this? Here are some details: the database resides on Tool Labs with the name s52475__wpx_p. The table that associates WikiProjects with articles and drafts is called projectindex. Pages are stored by talk page title but in the future this should change. Have fun!

On the horizon
  • The work on the CollaborationKit extension continues. The extension will initially focus on reducing template and Lua bloat on WikiProjects (especially our WPX UI demonstration projects), and will from there create custom interfaces for creating and maintaining WikiProjects.
  • The WikiCite meeting will be in Berlin in May. The goal of the meeting is to figure out how to build a bibliographic database for use on the Wikimedia projects. This fits in quite nicely with WikiProject X's work: we want to make it easier for people to find things to work on, and with a powerful, open bibliographic database, we can build recommendations for sources. This feature was requested by the Wikipedia Library back in September, and this meeting is a major next step. We look forward to seeing what comes out of this meeting.

Ashmont–Mattapan High Speed Line

You reverted an edit I made on the Ashmont–Mattapan High Speed Line article today and I'd like to discuss that. My edit changed this rail line's type from Light rail to Heritage light rail. The link goes to the same page, only with the new word "heritage" added to the text of the link. I felt it was necessary to include this word because of the unique character of the line. As far as I know, it is the only non-street-running light rail line in the US that uses historic rail vehicles exclusively (if it were street-running, it would be grouped with heritage streetcars). It is definitely not made up, as you described it and I am proposing that we add this change back to the article. Jackdude101 (Talk) 21:24, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

@Jackdude101: You wouldn't know this, but this has been a contentious issue at several articles. The compromise that was arrived at was to call the line a "light rail" line but one operated with "heritage vehicles", rather than a "heritage streetcar" line. I'd advise just letting this one stay with the compromise that's been arrived at. --IJBall (contribstalk) 00:13, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, I was unaware of the prior discussion. My concern is that a heritage railway (per our definition) is intended to recreate or preserve the past. While the AMHS does use historic cars, its primary intent is to be used for mass transit, not preserving history. Calidum ¤ 19:25, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
As far as I know, and due to the fact that this isn't really addressed specifically in the heritage railway article, a rail line that exclusively uses historical or historical replica (pre-1960) equipment by accident instead of on purpose is not disqualified from being labeled as a heritage line. Consider the San Francisco cable car system, a rail system similar in this regard to the Ashmont–Mattapan High Speed Line, in that it has operated continuously since the 1870s with the same style of equipment and still provides a valid public transit function. Under the argument you present, this system would not be considered a heritage operation, even though it has National Historic Landmark status and several of the rail vehicles and the lines themselves are over 100 years old. I ask you this: is the San Francisco cable car system a heritage system, or no? What does your gut instinct tell you? If your answer is "yes", the same line of thinking ought to be applied to the Ashmont–Mattapan High Speed Line. I think we can all agree that the Ashmont–Mattapan High Speed Line is a very unique rail line (in North America, at least). Because of that, I feel that it is worthy of being labeled as a unique type to make note of its historic character, and I believe that unique type should be heritage light rail. Jackdude101 (Talk) 17:44, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
@Jackdude101: Again, this is the compromise that was reached. If you don't like it, you are welcome to take it up at Talk:Ashmont–Mattapan High Speed Line. But I'm pre-warning you that your argument is most likely going to get a chilly reception by most regular editors there. So my advice is just let this drop: "light rail" line operated with "heritage vehicles" is a pretty good compromise, and gets across the points that both sides of this discussion want to get across. --IJBall (contribstalk) 19:13, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
I'll give that a whirl. It doesn't hurt to try. Jackdude101 (Talk) 21:35, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

As your your edit summary, could you please point out where in the body of the article a cited source calls the Battle of Bunker Hill a "Pyrrhic victory"? I am not seeing it; as the lead serves as both an introduction to the topic as well as a super-condensed version of the article, its important that everything contained in the lead is expanded upon in the article. Blizzard Events

Hello Calidum, I was wondering how you determined that my edits were unconstructive in regards to weather events. Half of them had already been created with the date in front. I am just trying to create logic. Maybe we should create a debate but I never thought anyone would object to this. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hogie75 (talkcontribs) 16:09, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

In many of these cases you're moving articles away from their common names (such as the Great Blizzard of 1888) to names not frequently used, or inserting the year when it's not needed for either disambiguation or common name purposes (such as White Juan). Calidum ¤ 16:16, 8 May 2016 (UTC)
Thank You I do understand the reason for this as I should have brought it up for discussion as I am noticing, however I was noticing several other articles prior to moving the articles for my reasoning of doing what I did including 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire and 2011 Slave Lake wildfire, and 1991 Halloween blizzard several of which I had no contributions towards. The purpose of which would make Category:Blizzards_in_the_United_States organized and user friendly to view, and give some reason to naming in general which is quite confusing as per several discussions on Talk:Winter_storm_naming_in_the_United_States. I would gladly go back and revert my edits if deemed inappropriate. Again, the redirects were still in place. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hogie75 (talkcontribs) 16:46, 8 May 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for your concerns however a simple message to me would have been sufficient, I had no idea this was such an issue. I will refrain from any further edits.19:55, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

June 2016 Guild of Copy Editors Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors June 2016 News

Hello everyone, welcome to the June 2016 GOCE newsletter. It's been a few months since we sent one out; we hope y'all haven't forgotten about the Guild! Your coordinators have been busy behind the scenes as usual, though real life has a habit of reducing our personal wiki-time. The May backlog reduction drive, the usual coordinating tasks and preparations for the June election are keeping us on our toes!

May drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's record-setting backlog reduction drive. Of the 29 people who signed up, 16 copyedited at least one article, 197 copyedits were recorded on the drive page, and the copyedit backlog fell below 1,500 for the first time! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz will occur from 12 June through 18 June; the themes will be video games and Asian geography.

Coordinator elections: It's election time again; how quickly they seem to roll around! Nominations for the next tranche of Guild coordinators, who will serve a six-month term that begins at 00:01 UTC on 1 July and ends at 23:59 UTC on 31 December, opens at 00:01 UTC on 1 June and closes at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. Voting takes place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June. If you'd like to assist behind the scenes, please consider stepping forward; self-nominations are welcomed and encouraged. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible; remember it's your Guild, and it doesn't run itself!

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Miniapolis and Baffle gab1978.

To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

Emilia Clarke vandalism

Why did you revert all of the productive, cited edits I made to this page? I added necessary information including box office numbers and updated the heading with her more recent work... Please undo your revert. You cannot just undo someones edit like that with no reasoning and write "last good version" that makes no common sense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xx041424 (talkcontribs) 06:43, 27 June 2016 (UTC)
