Laura, I've found some issues with this nomination. Can you please take a look so it can be made ready again to be promoted? As best I can tell, she first competes on August 4, so there's still plenty of time if it's wrapped up within 24 hours. BlueMoonset (talk) 17:35, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
- Still more work needed, alas. I replied on the nomination template, and I'm afraid I did so before I saw your comment on my talk page. I didn't realize you were working on so little sleep, which is probably why you missed some things. Hope you can catch up on sleep soon! BlueMoonset (talk) 23:01, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Melissa Breen
[edit]BlueMoonset asked me to contact you here regarding my concern about the article. Specifically, I am bothered by the passage (at then end) that says "In Asia, she finally set an Olympic A qualifying time in the 100 metre event in May 2012 with a time of 11.29 seconds. She ran the 100 metre event 27 times in 2012 before finally reaching the Olympic A qualifying time." My reading of the source (and other sources I found) indicates that she missed the Olympic A time by .002 seconds.
Additionally, I'm somewhat confused about whether she made it to London, given this this Canberra news story that indicates that she didn't go to London because her 4x100 relay team wasn't in the top 16. However, this page lists her in the Olympics 100 meters.
I have not corrected the article because I think it possible that you have some information or insight that isn't reflected in the cited sources -- and that will help you unsnarl these apparent contradictions. --Orlady (talk) 14:47, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

[edit]You ask a dinky die west oz if he is australian and interested in milhist - hahaha - I spent 6 months last year (apart from a day and a half at awm) working on milhist issues to do with the 1942 japanese scare... ? SatuSuro 09:37, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- further details are needed - ta for the response SatuSuro 10:06, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- Didn't I just provide them on your talk page? :P Going to be on August 25 (almost certainly. Should have exact date by early next week but 25th is the best weekend for the AWM.), going to be exhibits, you takes pictures, you can license them as you want but need to go on Commons. More details to be determined later. Go ask WM-AU for money if you need it. --LauraHale (talk) 10:09, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- yeah - I was looking at ignorant armies talk page first (which caused the initial part of first sentence above.. ) I then provided and almost incoherent phrase in an incomplete sentence about my milhist credentials - and then I thought I read your item at my talk page as suggesting more details might follow... hope that explains all SatuSuro 10:13, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- I don't care much about your milhist credentials so much as I do about your ability to take photographs, successfully upload them to Commons and your ability to be here. :) If you can do those three things, it would be incredibly useful because it means you can be used for other things. ;) If you know others who might be interested in attending, they are welcome to attend. I think we were thinking top end of about 10 but if it looks like more, I'd just communicate that to the AWM and we'd figure something out. :) --LauraHale (talk) 10:19, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- looks interesting, I havent seen anything on the WMAU members list about this. Gnangarra 10:30, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- The details are not completely set in stone yet and it only became mostly confirmed today. I'm basically on indefinite leave from WM-AU's board for reasons John and Craig are both aware of. Hence, it has not been announced there yet, at least until the details are confirmed. This is much more an event for Commons people than Wikipedia people, though Wikipedians, WikiSource folks and Wikinewsies are more than welcome to attend. --LauraHale (talk) 10:33, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- Pencil me in please Laura. Is there a centralised discussion page for this yet? eg. Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes AWM? (see cat) Moondyne (talk) 12:12, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

- Can we get permission to have tripods and or flashes? Usually lighting is quite dim and photgraphy hard without assistance like this! Graeme Bartlett (talk) 01:31, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- Graeme: Do I have your e-mail? I can drop you their e-mail and you can see what we can practically do. I don't know enough to offer good commentary. --LauraHale (talk) 03:59, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- definately tripods are necessary, as long exposures can compensate for no flash. Ideally an afterhours or before hours access would even better. Gnangarra 02:02, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- This may be doable as it has been discussed. I think it could be something like you go in the morning and then they can set that up for the evening day of. The lighting has been discussed and if some one wants to come in a day or two early to poke around and report on lighting, that would be something worth considering. --LauraHale (talk) 02:12, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Which day works better?
[edit]For those interested in attending, which day works better? The 25th or the 26th of August? I'm inclined towards the morning of 25 August as Hawkeye7 can then attend for an hour or so and knows the War Memorial pretty well, including the person organising it. I think you'll then have access the rest of the weekend to take pictures, with the possibility of a (free hopefully) coffee and some one from the War Memorial explaining what is happening. :) --LauraHale (talk) 01:21, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- 25th better for me too. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 01:32, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- I think the 25th is better as people can travel friday night and sunday leaving all day saturday to photograph as well as saturday night to spend time talking over a good meal and a few drinks. Where as being on the sunday the war memorial is busier, people will need to travel home for returning to work. Gnangarra 01:34, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- Saturday is my only option. I'll be around from Friday arvo and departing Saturday night. Moondyne (talk) 03:54, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- I have let them know Saturday will work better for our group. :) Trying to now set the time and where at the War Memorial. Thus, at this point the date should be considered confirmed at the 25th. When I get the time and location set, I'll create a talk page and we can arrange a Canberra meetup in the evening for the same date. --LauraHale (talk) 01:48, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Hockey
[edit]Hey, i've seen you made a good amount of edits to the australian hockey team(s). When you want to create a template which is shown with the squad at the end of the article it's better to start a template than copy the whole "thing" to every article. I fixed it at some articles. The 2012 Olympics roster can be found here. Once everything is edited you simply copy the article name and place it in the articles between "{{" and "}}". Example: {{Template:Australia FH Squad 2012 Summer Olympics}}. Kante4 (talk) 16:10, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
- No problem. Those templates can be edited and the changes are visible on every page the template is inserted. ;) Those australian hockey player pages look pretty good i have to say. Kante4 (talk) 20:31, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
- Not many people participate in hockey articles sadly. I just make sure everyone who participated this year gets his/her article. Kante4 (talk) 20:42, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
- Nah, i never did that and don't want to most likely, regarding GA or DYK. Just here to edit and help. ;) Yeah, like i said those articles are pretty good and most of the time with more information than usual! Kante4 (talk) 21:11, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Better link for the WiR program
[edit]At http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedian_in_Residence , many projects list to subpages about them, but the Australian Paralympic Committee / National Sport Information Centre project just links to the http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/The_History_of_the_Paralympic_Movement_in_Australia. The organisation’s early work programme focussed largely on the development of privately financed procurement models. More latterly, the organisation’s focus has broadened to span transport, utility and social infrastructure as well as public service delivery models. Most of the work programme of the organisation focusses on the development of rational markets in infrastructure sub sectors.

He has served as the Chief Executive since early 2008, after joining the group in policy roles shortly after its formation in 2006. He is a member of the Federal Government's Infrastructure Finance Working Group.[3]

RE: Getting Wikimedians to the Olympic Games
[edit]Hi Laura! As a Wikimedian, I am very excited and sort of proud to see that you've been accredited as a Wikinews reporter in the London Paralympics. As a Brazilian, I already contribute to the articles related to the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Right now I am working on Rio de Janeiro bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics. If there is any other way to help, please, let me know. Best regards; Felipe Menegaz 05:08, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

- Fair enough. I'll see what I can do. I'll try to give you an answer as soon as possible. Felipe Menegaz 06:38, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
2016 Olympic Coverage
[edit]I do have experience as a journalist since receiving my degree from the Dwight Bentel School of Journalism decades ago. Better yet, I have experience covering Olympic Sports in Rio de Janiero. I was a producer for the only USA television coverage of the 2007 Pan American Games. I already know my way through the media back halls of the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange. [1] is my original photo, I obviously had a all access field pass. I also worked Athletics at the 1996 Summer Olympics and over 15 years for IAAF's USA based crew. I'm also a USATF Master Certified official. I was in charge of one of the officiating crews for the United States Olympic Trials (track and field), the selection for the USA Olympic Team. That said, my contributions to Wikipedia, primarily on the subject of athletics, come in bursts. I work in creative media. I released a film literally on the day before the Olympics this year, I have a TV series about to ramp up. When the undertow of that happens, I'll have to disappear. I'll do what I can. And four years from now is a long time away. Trackinfo (talk) 06:47, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
RE: Getting Wikimedians to the Olympic Games
[edit]Hi,
Couple of issues here. One thing was that I was very regular with the Summer Games just past (and also approached another editor for a overall cleanup we need now (also posted on WP Olympics)). I was also planning on the paralympics, but i am not sure of the tv coverage, so i may be limited to data input in stuff like powerlifting. But Im not sure on what you said about working at wikinews as WP doesnt allow original reporting. I dont think either one allows "original" reporting as such. Ive been sourcing all the updates i did (weightlifting, diving, modern pentathelon for women). Ive also worked extensively on the closing ceremony and 2016 articles creating the template and the pages for the new sports. Btw- i also think paralympics is a good idea as its generally undercovered. We should also add special olympics
Also perhaps Winter Olympics could be a possiility? Im trying to work out getting to Sochi already.Lihaas (talk) 07:03, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- Not too familiar with wikinews, but how does th eoriginal reporting there get to be reliable? Im guessing it would entail writing about the winners et al for each event? I could do that.
- Special Olympics should be notable enough )for events, maybe not athletes)
- ALso I was thinking more on the lines of the NOC at the Games pages (like 2012 summer just past) and individual events. Those ill certainly do.Lihaas (talk) 07:34, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Laura. Thanks. These days, I just contribute bits and pieces when I have the proper combination of time, energy and interest. I've done a few stubs on nations at the 2012 Paralympics, and stubs on the début athletes for Antigua & Barbuda and for San Marino (as well as Rim, as you saw), but nothing very systematic. It's great news that you'll be at the Games with a press accreditation! I hope you fully enjoy them, while you're working. :) Aridd (talk) 11:56, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

I've nominated Edward Francis Anhalt for deletion after Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Dreduardoa/sandbox was closed as keep and move to AfC. I chose to move the article to the mainspace because it is not eligible for speedy deletion. The community should decide whether the article is or is not a hoax. If it is a hoax, then it does not belong anywhere on Wikipedia (mainspace, AfC space, or userspace), but if it's not a hoax, then Wikipedia will have another article. Because you had closely reviewed the sources at the MfD, I invite you to comment at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Edward Francis Anhalt. Cunard (talk) 18:01, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

Interviews
[edit]Nice work with the interviews! I don't think many media will have done that. They add a nice personal touch. If you have time (because it would take a while), I would suggest maybe also typing them out as transcripts (if you haven't done so yet?); in some cases (such as the Solomon Islands coach), it's a little hard to hear. Aridd (talk) 22:24, 7 September 2012 (UTC)
- Fantastic! I wrote the Francis Kompaon article at the last Games, when he became the Pacific's first ever Paralympic medallist, and someone has done Iliesa Delana of course, but it would indeed be good to have articles on all the athletes - especially if the OPC can provide information. (I've also been doing the Pacific Island countries at the 2012 Paralympics on the French Wikipedia, where coverage of the Paralympics overall is much less than on the English Wikipedia, and I intend at least to write the articles on Kompaon and Delena there.) Keep up the good (and original!) work! :) Aridd (talk) 08:45, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
- The French Wikipedia's admissibility criteria only accept articles on Paralympians if they've won medals. I've just finished writing the articles on Delana and Kompaon. I also started those on the Pacific countries at the London Paralympics, before the Games, and I've been updating them whenever I can. (Except Samoa; someone else started that one, and I may have to rework it a bit.) Here's what we have. If it can help raise awareness and interest in Vanuatu, that'd be great! Potential abuse of DYK
[edit]I couldn't open the PDFs - my system - and it doesn't matter. They're talking about Anne aka ACP2011. Maile66 (talk) 22:19, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
- My bad. I know I had people go after me for COI because of my thesis topic related to social media with the Bieber thing. I also know for my own stuff, I have not been asked to write DYKs. They would prefer GAs or general across the board improvement to articles, to doing more historical work. I know I do them as DYK is a good thing for people who need goals. I promote them because I take pride in my editing. this might be a better more workable version of my thing. (And I've pretty much left DYK, and will stay away for a while on a large scale. I had a green tick taken away because it had too many sources, which was fixed by the secondary reviewer who took away the green tick. The secondary reviewer then said the hook was not supported by sources, you know, the sources the secondary took away because there were too many sources. This comes on top of having arbitrary criteria set up for my own DYKs, including they are not well written enough, and the MOS should be violated by putting things into poorly formatted, incomplete lists instead of prose, things randomly cut for not being encyclopedia worthy despite the fact that the facts connected to what makes the person notable in order to make the article SHORTER and not DYK eligible. I've had a secondary reviewer de-tick something, propose an alternative hook that changed two words and the secondary reviewer then say they are ineligible to complete the review because they proposed a hook in which two words, and nothing of major substance, was changed. I've lost one DYK because there was nothing interesting is in the article, and just because an article meets all the criteria for DYK and is submitted, it doesn't mean it needs to be a DYK because yawn, only possibly a boring hook.) --LauraHale (talk) 22:33, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
- Ah...What started that whole thread was when Panyd promoted the nom I'd just passed by Anne: Jews' Gate Cemetery. Reviewing her noms are a joy, because she's good at it. But Panyd had just seen one too many on Gilbralter and posted about it. I don't know how far you got in that thread, but farther down Panyd posted this the Gibraltar’s Director of Heritage, which makes it look like DYK has been somewhat duped. But probably not by Anne, just by the Gibralter tourist people. Maile66 (talk) 23:04, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
- Writing DYKs is an art form and some people can do a really good job at it. (It is just like writing for GA or FAC. It is a skill you learn and then you specialise.) The tourist people can think they are getting something out of DYK, but I've been trying to determine the actual value of DYKs, and I'm having a hard time demonstrating value of DYKs as a way to bring attention to a topic and make people think about something who would otherwise NOT think about it. I've yet to be able to show real value for this. We had 59 Aussie Paralympians, more Aussie Olympians, the whole water polo team and the whole softball team for Australia. Yet there hasn't been any demonstrated value as a result of the DYK. She can feel duped, but I think the Tourist Board are more duped by the value of DYK if that is the case. --LauraHale (talk) 23:18, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Template:Did you know nominations/Live While We're Young, could you opine. AdabowtheSecond (talk) 01:58, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
The MCG is much more than AFL. It's actually run by the Melbourne Cricket Club, the C in its name stands for Cricket, and the world's biggest Test Cricket crowds appear there every Boxing Day. I can understand that some Rugby League fans could see it as part of an evil AFL push, but it's more just a Melbourne thing. More Melbourne people go to just about any sport than in most cities. As an American you may be amused to know that my (very Aussie) dad played a few games of baseball there in the 1940s. And it was home to thousands of US troops during WWII. I just wish we could escape the NRL vs AFL thing. HiLo48 (talk) 10:16, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Reference parameters and pairs of things
[edit]Hi Laura, I noticed that you used the "author" parameter of {{cite book}} incorrectly at Fabian Blattman; it should only be used for people, not publishers. The publisher parameter is for noting the publisher; in the reference I corrected, it was the Australian Paralympic Federation. Also, "a pair of records" is not a good phrase; just saying "two records" would be much better. I understand that American English is a bit more permissive with those types of constructions than Australian English; almost any usage of"pair" besides a pair of socks/shoes/jeans or perhaps a pair of Emperor Penguins sounds frankly ridiculous in the latter dialect. Graham87 16:44, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
- A pair of records sounds more than faintly ridiculous to North Americans, too. I understand that Laura no longer has the unenviable pressure of a PhD thesis; it would be most welcome if she attended to matters of prose and formatting more systematically, since she is making a potentially major contribution to a neglected topic on en.WP. I say potentially in good faith. Tony (talk) 13:46, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
WAIS alumni
[edit]Hi there, I see you've added the WAIS alumni tag to a bunch of WA sportspeople. Where are you getting this info? If it is from the hall of fame members then that is a completely separate issue. Please verify that they actually attended WAIS as student or coach, and not just as the hall of fame. I've removed some cats from people who were extremely unlikely due to their age to have been involved officially.Regards, The-Pope (talk) 04:01, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your advice on John Moulton. I have added more material but it would appear that he is considered non-notable. I am still firmly of the opinion that recognition by the nation in awarding him an OAM marks him as notable but sadly others don't. I appreciate that your comments have been constructive and not votes as in "per nom" or offensive personal asides. Thanks Castlemate (talk) 22:13, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for October 4
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Sport in Australia, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Equestrian, Alan Jones and John O'Neil (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

[edit]Hey Laura!
Do you think you'd want to write a blog for the new [WikiWomen's blog feed on the WMF blog? Perhaps about the importance of improving women's sport, or women doing just that, or your experience at the Paralympics...or or or :) Let me know, I'd love to have you involved. [edit]You passed Willy Loman and Jahlil Okafor without listing them at WP:GA. For the latter, I completed the talk page.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 20:38, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Howdy! I noticed you had a concern about that article's sources. All of those non-URL sources are from Lexis-Nexis, which don't have a url. Just thought I'd let you know :) --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:46, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
- Well, in the cite news template, where do I indicate it then that it's from Lexis Nexis? Location=? Publisher=? Format? --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 04:14, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
- Alright, I added in a notice that the citations were from LN. Hopefully that works now! --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 06:05, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
I saw this in the next prep set and checked it out preparatory to moving the set to the queue and ... I'm afraid it has major problems. I was unable to discover why the revolutionaries' meeting place is called the devil's castle, and probing further led me to see that the plot summary is actually way too close to a translation of the Italian (except for one inaccuracy, which I have fixed). However, more importantly: The mention of Rise Stephens that you added refers to an opera by Virgilio Mortari of the same name; see it:Risë Stevens. (The Time link is broken but the text comes up on a Google search and clearly refers to an opera.) The film does not take place at La Scala (although it may be based on the opera's plot - I didn't look.) The supposed remake that is the hook fact, added by Dr. Blofeld, has a completely different plot - see the cited Italian source. It involves a woman bearing the Devil's daughter. I'm going to have to be cruel and pull the hook and reopen the nomination. Ideally someone has access to a physical book or two and can find material to put in instead - I am not questioning the notability of the film, but it's not a unique title, especially when translated. (Have a look at what-all comes up on IMDb search). Yngvadottir (talk) 19:13, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
i apologize for the error on canvassing. it was not an act of being malicious. once i was explained i asked those to nevermind, it was very brief. i did ask them not review, i should have asked the question better, after all, thats why i was in the chat for support. again, i do have integrity, i am hopeful for reconsideration on the comment as i believe your comment could harm the potential of the article being kept. again i am hope for reconsideration. re: GAR
[edit]As with Japhet, all of those sources are from Lexis Nexis. I don't see why you are so against using a program that doesn't have a URL. Would it be any different if I got it out of a newspaper from my home town? --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:38, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
- If you have some beef with the project, could you let us know what it is instead of doing a GAR on an article that was only passed as a GA an hour ago? That would only be courteous. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:48, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
- ...this is the exact same situation as with Japhet. Is all you want the same text, that it was accessed from Lexis Nexis? Major deja vu! --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:14, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

[edit]I've passed the article, but please can you check I placed it correctly in the GA list? I'm not sure if I should be alphabetising by her first name or second name, as I'm unfamiliar with conventions for Saudi names. Thanks. Sarastro1 (talk) 20:15, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Elaborating: Subject-specific notability is important, and Gigs has argued for a more universal sport notability criteria, without considering different the local popularity of a sport. Second- and third-level football have different levels [avoid rep] of media coverage in Australia versus the UK. Cricket in the USA has different levels of media coverage compared to cricket in with India. Hence, sport-specific and regional criteria are necessary, and broad brush-strokes cannot be used for notability. His COI views indicate that someone at the MET should not contribute to Monet-related articles, while Serbian nationalists editing Serbia and Croatia articles have less inherent COI problems. His lack of active content creation, based on [not logical] edits to the main space and lack of involvement in processes, demonstrate a lack of [again, avoid close rep] knowledge dealing with these issues. If he does not have familiarity in sourcing articles across different countries, while insisting similarities existing, it strikes me as not being he is not equipped to deal with content level disputes. He's been active in that area in his comments [unclear]. Hence, this is a major concern."
