To add to your barnstar collection

The Warming stripes Barnstar
For your dedicated labor and patient guidance through the surprisingly complex DYK process. You have projected the spirit of thoughtful and constructive collaboration that is supposed to guide us. Congrats on your achievement of admin status, as your approach is much needed and inadequately appreciated. —RCraig09 (talk) 04:54, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
Wow, thanks for the kind words, RCraig! I was so happy to help! And, wow, nice barnstar!
Yeah, DYK's a lot of fun, but the first few times all the various rules and viewpoints can feel pretty arcane. The reason I like it is that you get so many new eyes on an article while you're going through the process. And of course it's fun to see the spike in views on the day it appears, although unfortunately just now DYK is on a 12-hour rotation, so articles are only appearing for half as long. The article is looking great, by the way -- you have really done a lot of work! Isn't it fun when you discover a missing subject and you're researching along thinking, "There's tons here! How does this not have an article yet?" --valereee (talk) 10:46, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
"Gyackh, when will I learn this stuff?" —RCraig09 (talk) 18:54, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
Yes, human knowledge has few limitations, but people do have severe time limitations! I've noticed that Prep area 5 has been cleared, and I'm utterly clueless as to how "queues" and "prep areas" relate". I don't want a full explanation, but is there a place to follow developments of this particular article's path from here forward? Or did I (gasp! 😮 ) miss something already? —RCraig09 (talk) 17:36, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
If you go to Template:Did you know/Queue and scroll down slightly, you'll see a schedule of when each queue is due to appear. Warming stripes is in Queue 5, which is due to appear at 00:00 UTC on August 16, so basically midnight to noon UTC that day. After it appears, a notification will be placed on the talk page with a link to page views, which generally takes a day to update, but once it does you'll be able to see the jump in page views caused by the DYK appearance. --valereee (talk) 17:58, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
hahaha right? Always something new to figure out here on WP! --valereee (talk) 20:57, 13 August 2019 (UTC)

Related: Greetings! I thought you'd be interested in the new Climate spiral article, which is nearing a plateau of content inclusion. I was again surprised how much coverage there was, that went unnoticed on WP. And you were right: always something new to figure out! —RCraig09 (talk) 16:21, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

Wow, that article's gigantic! Lol, Ed Hawkins (scientist) is looking pretty promising, too. --valereee (talk) 16:26, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
The Hawkins bio article was my next planned article, now that there are two+ independent tech-subject articles. ✔ —RCraig09 (talk) 16:59, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
Stardate 20190826, supplemental. The link to Ed Hawkins (scientist) has changed from red to blue... magic!!! 😀 —RCraig09 (talk) 21:28, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

Ohio Wikimedians User Group: September 2019 newsletter

General Updates

  • WikiProject Cleveland Museum of ArtKevin (SuperHamster) and Maria (Rimmel.Edits) have been collaborating with Neal Stimler and the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) to launch WikiProject Cleveland Museum of Art on the English Wikipedia! Back in January, the CMA announced its conversion into an Open Access institution—and part of this initiative included the upload of thousands of photos and Wikidata items on CMA artworks. This WikiProject has been created to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the CMA, such as artworks and artists featured in the Museum's collections, while being able to leverage the great resources that have been released into the public domain. If you'd like to join in, please sign up to be a member here. We have an expanding list of articles to create here.
  • Mailing list live! — We now have admin access to the previously-deprecated Wikimedia-US-OH mailing list. All members are encouraged to subscribe here. Anyone who would like to communicate to subscribed members can email wikimedia-us-oh@lists.wikimedia.org.
  • Membership List — Reminder that our membership list has been revamped and supports the addition of new details (such as name, picture, location, and titles). Members are welcome to update their entry if they wish (all details are optional).

Movement Strategy

  • The Movement Strategy Working Groups have created their recommendations, located here. Community input will be accepted until September 15, so if you would like to provide feedback, be sure to do so in the next couple weeks.

Upcoming and Ongoing Events

  • Wiki Loves Monuments is back in the United States for 2019. Through the end of September, upload your photos of registered historical sites to the Commons to help document our history and illustrate Wikipedia - and have a shot at winning the national contest. If you're interested in participating, a guide to finding historic sites in Ohio is available here.
  • WikiConference North America 2019 is headed to Boston from November 8th through 11th! If you are interested in attending, both session proposals and scholarship applications are open through September 20th.

Recent Events

  • In April, two edit-a-thons were hosted at the Ohio State University:
    • The Female and Under-represented Language Scientists edit-a-thon, hosted by the Hispanic Linguistic Colloquium in collaboration with the Buckeye Language Network (BLN) Student Association. The goal of the event was to improve articles on under-represented language scientists. 11 editors contributed 50+ edits that consisted of 1.54k words across 24 articles, including one new article.
    • The Spanish & Portuguese Edit-A-Thon, hosted by students from the Spanish and Portuguese department (Dona pipoca and Caesarologia, with support from SuperHamster). The edit-a-thon focused on expanding coverage of Spanish and Portuguese topics on the English Wikipedia, primarily by translating articles from Spanish/Portuguese to English. In doing so, attendees sharpened their Spanish/Portuguese skills, gained experience editing Wikipedia, and learned about new topics. 23 editors contributed 180+ edits that consisted of 15.8k words across 70 articles, including four new articles.
  • Wikimania 2019 took place in Stockholm this year, with several Ohio Wikimedians attending. If you're interested in some of the sessions, many of them were recorded and are available on the Commons here.
Have something for the next newsletter? Add it to our October 2019 draft.

Hello Valereee,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Go here to remove your name if you wish to opt-out of future mailings.

Apple dumplings

Hi Valereee, that sounds like you have a tasty project at the moment :)

Here is the transcription:

I will translate it for you later, probably tonight. The Google translation isn't too terrible despite the strange spelling and grammar (but "Zimmt" is Zimt, cinnamon, not "grapefruit").

Happy editing/cooking, —Kusma (t·c) 11:24, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

My translator (not google) offers this:
Apple dumplings, or little puddings of apples. Peel the apples and remove the casing with a greed borer, and fill the hole with quince or pomorence jam, or if you like, just sugar. Then take a piece of dough, make a hole in it, put the apple in it, put another piece of dough in the same shape on top and close the apple on the side around it with it. Put the apples on it in boiling water over the fire and they will be good in three quarters of a minute. Then pour melted butter on it and arrange it.
In another way. Peel sour apples, chop them into small pieces and roast them a little in lard; toast a number of peeled almonds and moisten them with sweet cream, but not too much. Mix in enough breadcrumbs and mix with eggs to a proper starch. They also add small raisins, cinnamon and sugar, make small round dumplings of them, turn them into fine flours, and let them bake in lard. Finally make a sweet broth over it with large and small raisins, sugar, cinnamon and wine, and let the dumplings boil in it for a little while.
Note: cinnamon ;) - I have no time right now to check it, and "Stärke" here should mean a consistency, not "starch", so it needs checking. - Moonraker is my friend for idiomatic translation, because the old-times flavour gets lost otherwise. Enjoy! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:31, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
Had to fix a typo: it should be three quarters of an hour, not three quarters of a minute. As to your translation: I think you're supposed to crush the almonds, not toast them :) As I said, I'll offer an improved version later. —Kusma (t·c) 11:37, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
Thank you both! I'm not too concerned about exact translation, more that I can ascertain that this is indeed the same dish -- a cored, stuffed, pastry wrapped apple, sometimes stuffed with raisins or other dried fruit/nuts, baked or boiled in a sweetened sauce -- and this does seem to be the same dish. --valereee (talk) 12:03, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
Well, your book does describe two separate dishes. One is a cored apple filled with marmalade, wrapped with pastry and then boiled. The second one is as follows:
Another method. Peel fairly sour apples, chop them into small pieces, roast them in a pan with a little lard, crush some peeled almonds and moisten them with sweet cream, but not too much. Mix in sufficient breadcrumbs and stir with eggs to the right consistency. One also adds small raisins, cinnamon and sugar, forms small round dumplings, covers them in fine flour and deep fries them in lard. Finally one covers them with a sweet broth containing large and small raisins, sugar, cinnamon and wine, and lets the dumplings boil for a short time.
That sounds different from the apple dumplings of the first recipe, and actually a bit more like Apfelkrapfen. —Kusma (t·c) 15:52, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, Gehäuse here is surely short for Kerngehäuse, core, and doesn’t mean casing. I am puzzled by Griebsbohrer, perhaps a tool for taking the core out of fruit? No idea what a Grieb or Griebs is, but “greed borer” doesn’t mean anything! Moonraker (talk) 22:06, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
You are right, - and yes, Griebsch is a colloquial word for core that I'd know. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:09, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

For my own education I would like to know why the statement "The Rangerettes have performed on four continents, in twelve foreign countries, twenty-three states, and Washington D.C." is considered promotional-sounding content, but none of the very similar content in the same paragraph is considered promotional. My hope is your answer will help me become a better editor. Thanks in advance. PhillyHarold 12:32, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

PhillyHarold The source is their own website. What we want to see is someone else talking about this stuff, or Wikipedia doesn't consider it noteworthy enough to include in the article. I have these kinds of concerns about the whole article, that it's including stuff that no one else is talking about. Just because something is verifiable doesn't mean it's appropriate for inclusion in a WP article. --valereee (talk) 14:03, 11 September 2019 (UTC)
First, thank you for answering my question and your help, and second, my apologies for forgetting to sign my post here. There are 65 individual references in the article, 13 of which are either the Rangerette's website, or the website of Kilgore College, so 52 references in the article are all external to the organization and college which should qualify for someone else. Should the information sourced by 13 organization and college citations be removed pending additional references? PhillyHarold 12:32, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
PhillyHarold No worries at all about forgetting to sign, it's easy to do! That bot comes along and signs for you, most of the time, and leaves that message. At the bottom of the editing box on talk pages, there's a 'Sign your posts on talk pages:' with four clickable tildes next to it; click on those and it'll automatically sign for you. Using four tildes makes your name clickable to your user page, as a convenience to other editors.
In my opinion, yes, we'd want to see as many of those references as possible replaced. It's not that we necessarily think they're incorrect about the facts, it's just that if they're the only ones mentioning something, it may not be appropriate for inclusion in the article. Only for information that is important to the article and not mentioned anywhere else would I want to see us using it. For instance, if the only place you could find the exact date it started -- say everyone else is saying she started it in 1939 but the website says December 1, 1939 -- you could use the organization's website. That's information arguably important to the article and not likely to be controversial. But things like the names of assistant choreographers should be cited to other sources, because those sources mentioning the information is what tells us it's important enough to include. If literally no one else is mentioning those names, they're unfortunately probably trivia. They belong on the organization's website, but not on wikipedia. --valereee (talk) 12:51, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
I deleted all content that cited the Rangerette website and Kilgore College if I could not find separate citations to support, and updated where they could. I also removed the 3rd party tag. Take a look if you'd like and let me know if it is acceptable. PhillyHarold 21:05, 13 September 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by PhillyHarold (talkcontribs)
Definitely better, thanks so much for being willing to work with other editors on a page that I can tell is close to your heart! :) --valereee (talk) 21:53, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. The topic is actually not that close to my heart, I prefer to bounce around on many different topics. The King of Kilgore guy is a friend of mine from many years ago, and he mentioned in an email several months ago what a hassle he was having with one editor in particular. He threw in the towel, so I picked it up just to needle the other editor. Wish I could remember his name, he was a supreme ass and of absolutely no help whatsoever. Anyway, glad you think it's better. PhillyHarold 23:37, 13 September 2019 (UTC)

MX, I'm happy to do that, just let me go ask a quick question to make sure there isn't some agreed-upon way to do it. --valereee (talk) 11:34, 19 September 2019 (UTC)

A brownie for you!

Thank you for helping me deleting the redirect. Sorry for bugging you so much. I hope you enjoy this virtual brownie! MX () 13:11, 19 September 2019 (UTC)
Not bugging me at all! I like being able to help other editors, I just don't always know what the correct process is. When I do something for the first time, I'm always wondering if there's something I don't know and I'm about to do something stupid that's going to cause work for someone else lol. Thanks for the brownie, and sorry that my ineptness caused a delay for you! :) --valereee (talk) 13:17, 19 September 2019 (UTC)

IRC invitation

Hey Valereee,

you may like to join us in #wikipedia-en-help on chat.freenode.net. If you are interested, I recommend taking the following steps:

  • Registering your name on freenode: https://freenode.net/kb/answer/registration#nickname-setup
  • Confirming the registration via e-mail
  • After having done this, responding to this talk page message here on Wikipedia by saying something like "My account name on freenode is Valereee".
  • Joining us in #wikipedia-en-help, saying that you have now done this and will now request a cloak.
  • Requesting a "hostmask cloak" to visibly prove the connection between the freenode name and the Wikipedia account: meta:IRC/Cloaks

If you like to, and if the visibility of your IP address is not an issue, feel free to join #wikipedia-en-help using the link at WP:IRC help disclaimer and we can assist with this process step by step.

Best regards
~ ToBeFree (talk) 19:19, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Admin's Barnstar
Don't think we have ever crossed path, but I really admire your amazing work with DYK and everything (helping mentoring elisa.rolle for instance, something that I could not do) since you became admin. Keep up the astonishing work of being diplomatic and empathetic person you are. Cheers, Alex Shih (talk) 12:51, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

Wow, thanks for the kind words, Alex! Much appreciated! --valereee (talk) 13:08, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

And marvellous to see how well the race for the hottest pepper did the other day, despite certain users complaining about it! More of the same!! The Rambling Man (Staying alive since 2005!) 15:04, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
TRM, thanks! I was happy to see it get a lot of views, just sorry it was a 12-hour as it might have otherwise gotten on the stats board! :) I'm still actually toying with whether it should be moved to Super-hot peppers. --valereee (talk) 15:09, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

EGGy omelette

Hi, valereee. When I saw Template:Did you know nominations/Anne Boutiaut Poulard, I was amused to think that, somewhere along its journey to the Main Page, someone or other is likely to cite WP:EGG regarding the piping of "Anne Boutiaut Poulard" to "omelette". (Maybe I have a low threshold for amusement.) Anyways, what I mostly came here for was that I noticed an identical sentence twice in the article: the first sentence (paragraph) in the Omelette section also appears in the Career section. I was going to delete or reword/trim the "Career" instance, but figured it was better to let you handle it as you see fit. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 20:51, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

Mandarax, that's funny, because I almost included a second ALT to address that exact thing -- I think it was ...that an omelette invented by Mother Poulard is one of the top tourist attractions in Mont-Saint-Michel? Which I could then include an image with. If someone objects, I'll offer that, but I kind of liked the emphasis on omelette. Thanks for the heads up on the duplication, I'll go take a look! But you should always feel free to edit as you see fit on anything I've created, I do my best not to be own-y. :) --valereee (talk) 11:24, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – October 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2019).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion, a new criterion for speedy category renaming was added: C2F: One eponymous article, which applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories.

Technical news

  • As previously noted, tighter password requirements for Administrators were put in place last year. Wikipedia should now alert you if your password is less than 10 characters long and thus too short.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • The Community Tech team has been working on a system for temporarily watching pages, and welcomes feedback.

re I didn't glom that until I'd started setting preps myself.: I'd never seen or heard the word "glom" before, so I had to look it up. From the Scots dialect glaum it seems. Kudos. Not that it's unusual for me to come across a new word (especially with the newer youth speech like whatev), but such a short word I've never seen or heard of before really caught my eye. BTW - keep up all the good work, both editor and admin. "over and out" — Ched (talk) 18:10, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Oh, interesting -- I think this is a word that has been in use since my young adulthood in the area I grew up to indicate "catch on" as in "I caught onto the idea." I'd not realized it had an earlier more literal meaning of catch hold of something tangible such as a pocketbook, lol. --valereee (talk) 18:21, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
