HMS Archer (D78)

Hi, there is no need to have a flag at the top of the infobox as no single flag covers the ships' career. All the flags she served under are adequately covered under the Port of Registry. This is in accordance with WP:SHIPS practice covering this situation. Had HMS Archer only served with the Royal Navy then the flag would be appropriate. Mjroots(talk) 14:47, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

I have no clue how to use AWB, since I don't use it. Plus, your AWB runs adding the infoboxes sometimes put the infoboxes above some items that are supposed to be above infoboxes per the Manual of Style. I have fixed the ones that showed up on my watchlist. Please take your time instead of trying to do it all at once automatically. Don't feel bad that you've done something wrong, we all do something wrong at first. I suggest that you take your time before digging straight in with something that is so advanced-level as adding infoboxes to articles using AWB. Get into some vandal fighting and content-building and then once you've gotten the hang of how wikipedia operates, then go back into the harder-level things. Also, my suggestion to join WP:SHIPS is a very good one. We are usually very welcoming and helpful, you only need to ask.-MBK004 21:45, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Citeshort

You are currently changing a lot of articles that uses the WP:CITESHORT citation style to named references. This is inappropriate because Citeshort is a valid citation style as per MOS and the citation style employed by the main contributors should be respected. Big Animal article

Hi!

I've done a little bit of work on the above article!

Using Variety, Chicago Tribune, The Seattle Times and (last but not least - perhaps!) the Hartford Courant, I have added more info to that particular film! It is now definitely more than just an infobox and a reflist! Still a bit of work required though... right, now I'm off to bed (after a quick cigarette!) - incidently, there are other sources of reference out there, I just found 4 useful ones via Google News Search (and there were more that I could probably used there).

I have also linked the following articles which mention the film, so that the film's name in them lead to the film's article:

Anyway, I really must go now - it's 01:54am here! Obviously, that page will be on my watchlist, so I hope that it can be developed more - at the moment it is still astub-class article, which with a bit more work could become a start-class article (see the article's talk page).

If the article is deleted, please do not take it personally. Ask the deleting editor to place a copy of it in User:Tim1357/sandbox/The Inherited for safe keeping and so you can continue to improve it. As the film gets more press and favorable reviews, you can add them to the safeguarded article in anticipation of its return to main pages. If you have questions, feel free to ask. A long reply...

My "deletion" vote was with the caveat that it be saved and brought back. I like that you're making contributions to Wikipedia and wish to help in your learning of Wikipedia's often confusing ways... ways that can sometimes seem unfriendly.

The Inherited ia a good case in point. Not nine minutes after you placed in onboard, an editor from "new pages patrol" tagged it for speedy deletion[1] (see Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion for more information). Such tagging is not what new editors like to see. Admirably, you continued working on the article, and then, 10 minutes later, another editor came by and "seconded" the first editor's tag[2]. 2 1/2 hours later, a third editor came by who thought the article merited a chance for improvement, so he tagged it as "under construction" [3]. Then you came back some hours later and kept working on it. Again, quite admirable. An hour later, the original editor revisited the article and sent ti to "AfD" so its deletion could be discussed[4]. I myself came by 2 1/2 hours after than and began cleaning up the article to make it more presentable... adding a bit of sourcing to show it was not a hoax [5].

I like rescuing articles that others feel are unsalvagable... and am happy to have been able to give your article a better appearance. But unfortunately, and just as you could not, I was unable to find any reviews about the film... or any press articles. Those are the factors by which Wikipedia judges "notability" (See WP:NF for specifics).

But that is also why I opined a temporary delete at the AfD discussion and suggested the article be "userfied" to you in anticipation of its eventual return (seeWP:USERFY for more information). When the film gets more press, the reviews and articles should then be included to show the film's worthiness. Ask questions. ask for help. I'll be glad to assist.

And just so this does not happen again, before an article you are preparing is ready to be set loose, you might consider using a user workspace to put it together at your convenience (seeWP:USERSPACE and WP:SANDBOX for information).

You may create a personal workspace by the same method as creating an articlem except preface the article name with "User:Tim1357/sandbox/". Your sandbox for this film would then be User:Tim1357/sandbox/The Inherited (the redlink turns blue once you start adding content). Ask for input. Ask for help. Many of us here are happy to help. Film project banner

Thank you for reviewing the articles to see if they still require images or not. One quick request - if the "needs-image" parameter is no, then delete the entire parameter from the banner. Leaving it in recategorizes it to an error-catching category, and ultimately creates more cleanup work for the next editor who will have to delete it instead. Many thanks! Academy Awards

Hello, and welcome to WikiProject Films! I saw your comments at the talk page of the film awards task force, and you probably have seen my own about trying to make the Academy Award pages consistent. Tineidae

Hello Tim, thumbs up for creating the Tineidae genus pages. Would you be interested in expanding them? There are tons on pages about genera without any useful info. A genus page should at least have some species and the genus authority listed if possible. I'm sorry but I don't have time to update the list at the moment. It used to be updated by my bot. I still have its source code somewhere in case somebody is interested in running it again. FYI you should probably not commence on another large-scale stub-creation task without filing WP:BRFA. See this discussion which seems to be winding down in favour of requiring this. Hi Tim,

thanks for proposing to help here. As I've written on that page, the task was approved on the French WP, although I had to do it manually because I found nobody to run a bot for me. Oh and the controversial stuff about linking bios is over, there's no need to do it anymore. So it would be just about parsing the 2 listes of 20th and 21st century classical composers, check a SOAP web service to see if a link is to be added and do it if needed.

Any reason why you created this? It totally lacks context. I know increasing the number articles is more important, but you should include something that makes encyclopedic. We have wikispecies if your interested in building a database instead. Besides that, the one sentence it does have is completely wrong (it's a family, not a genus, you can tell that just by looking at the name). The "reference" is just a link to Coleophoridae again. AWB is for doing tedious and repetitive edits that take little or no user input. Creating articles should never be those things unless you believe in quantity over quality. Hi. As noted at the BRfA, the bot is mostly closed source for a variety of reasons, mostly because it would be useless to anyone except someone running an identical setup to mine, and also because it is filled with crap, because it contains a ton of gunk from back when I was having trouble automating one of the tasks so I just made a macro. It also contains source code which I am currently not allowed to distribute. The only bit I am really willing to release is the resize batch itself for people to use if they wish to make something similar. If your want is to simply get the bot back up and running, I am still making fixes, and should have it up in a few weeks. — neuro(talk) 07:30, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

That should never be a problem, for two reasons - firstly, the referenced site should be an appropriate reliable source - if you think that it is a tertiary source, such as an encyclopaedia, then you should really look elsewhere for a better source. Secondly, we don't copy things verbatim - instead, we re-phrase and present the facts in our own neutral, encyclopaedic style - we don't copy, we only reference facts and paraphrase. By constructing an article from a number of reliable sources, a new work emerges - though, of course, we don't do original research.
Often, sources on the internet copy from each other, and many times they copy from Wikipedia itself. Such sources should be avoided, because of their self-referential nature.
If you ever have questions about whether or not something is a valid source, you can check by asking on the reliable sources noticeboard.

I checked on Google, and although there are mentions of the sim, I couldn't see any reviews, newspaper articles or other appropriate reliable sources, so I think that it is not possible to 'fix' the problem (which is always the preferred action, even with an article as poor as this one).  Chzz  ►  21:21, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

re: SDPatrolBot

Hi there Tim, sorry I haven't been running SDPatrolBot for awhile, I rarely run it on Sundays, and on Saturday my computer turned itself off (automatic updates). But it's up and running again now. When I get around to do some more coding for it, I will make so it saves the list of old prods every so often, s that even if it does crash, it won't effect it, and even if a prod is removed while the bot isn't running, the bot will still pick it up (so long as the prod was on the page while the bot was running). By the way, if you do a lot of prodding, you may find WP:Dazzle! a very helpful script. And thanks for the heads up on the bot request, I'll have a look into it, although if ThaddeusB has already offered, I don't want to get in the way :) - Kingpin13 (talk) 09:19, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

Mike, First thanks for your contributions to the encyclopedia, even if they get deleted they are much appreciated. Hey Tim. As I was saying before about SDPatrolBot saving the prodlist, I've just added this function to it this evening. So you should no longer miss notifications when my computer has automatic updates, or the dotnetwikibot fails to load a page history (as it has done this evening). It also means SDPatrolBot will now notify you about prods removed while it wasn't running. But it won't be able to tell you about the prods which are added and removed while it's not running. Regex

Tim I would be glad to use the regex, maybe it could also be passed to the AWB developers to consider as a General Fix? I understood there was an issue with the Infobox office holder - is it that some titles are stand-alone and some should be on the same line as the name? Rich Farmbrough, 17:39, 7 October 2009 (UTC).

I was thinking the same thing! I tested the regex a lot (a LOT) and it seems that there are no other problem templates. I did find a problem, however, with {{nihongo}}, and i added it to the "skip if" field. ( I did this because Drilnorth told me to skip bugs more then what seems necessary). Actually, the only problem with the officeholder infoboxes are the honorific prefix parameter. Do you know how to write (in regex) skip if 1) has an officeholder infobox and 2) uses the honorific prefix?

The reason I mention the infobox is that I can't have SB skipping all the articles with that in so it would have to be driven off the honorific... there is a regex for doesn't match, but I can't remember it offhand - say it is ##

Sorry cobi, I could not get any messages to you before Cluebot III archived them. I have two questions Question Number 1: How is the new Cluebot engine coming along? Crispy does not seem to be very active. Is the project dead? Question Number 2: I have noticed 'Cluebot 5' on some of the vandalism Irc channels. It looks like cluebot is the bot that adds users to the blacklist. I wanted to know if cluebot 5 could add a user to the black list if one of their edits was reverted as vandalism. Rollback is just a fancy thing for quickly undoing vandalism; that's all; it's really not needed for stuff like this. In 'history', you can click on an old version, and then click (newer) to see the difference between that version and the next edit; at the top-left of that is a link to 'restore this version'.
So, you can do it yourself, if it's appropriate.
I must admit here that, at this stage, I haven't looked into your specific q. - I shall do so now; in the meantime, please come and this or talk to us.  Chzz  ►  01:17, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Re: Vandalism

You recently reverted something that had been flagged as vandalism on List of Yumeiro Patissiere Episodes. While I appreciate that it is important to ensure that vandalism is dealt with swiftly, had you actually looked at the page in question you would have noticed that my vandalism consisted of improving the quality of the English, adding wikilinks, adding external links (which admittedly probably should have been a set of references but there we go) and adding much needed content to a woefully underdeveloped article. You'll also notice that I explained all of my edits in the discussion page (signed by myself on one occasion and by sine bot on another). I've "deverted" the change and would appreciate that your friendly warning in the future at least explain what the issue was instead of just claiming something was in error.

The person who flagged my edits as vandalism looks like they may have taken the article under their wing as a pet project of sorts. This is an admirable enough thing to do but refusing assistance seems somewhat unwikipedian to me.

I realise that I am not nearly as active in tidying up wikipedia as yourself but when I do anything beyond fixing broken links or grammatical errors I try to always explain myself in the discussion area so that people can a)know what the problem was and b)look out for it if it happens again (assuming it was, indeed, a problem). --Shadebug (talk) 05:30, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Im terribly sorry! There is a certian vandal that has an obcession with pies. My vandal monitoring software flagged your edit as having the word 'I Hate' and when i saw 'Cakes' I immediately thought it was the 'Pie' vandal. I should have definitely look through the entire edit, and I should have caught myself when I saw that you were an experienced editor. In my defense, we (the anti-vandal people) have to look through 100 edits per minute, and quickly revert any of the edits that seem like vandalism. Note that the revised template I created at as a result of the VP discussion is already at {{dead links}}. It has some extra code to handle a |small parameter, and has documentation. I'd like to consolidate this somehow. We should use my newer code, I'm just not sure about the name. I was thinking "dead links" is more consistent with other maint. tag names, but it might be too close to {{dead link}}, which is a completely different template. Any thoughts? In response to the issues raised at the BRFA, the huge number of pages may be a problem; I can't run the bot 24/7 (in fact it can really only run for ~5 hours a day), so the huge amount of pages would take a lot of time, and could perhaps be better suited for another bot. Plus, I'm not sure that the consensus you got on the Village Pump is significant enough. Worse still, the RegEx is not standing up to the internet tester that I am using, and it's confusing enough that I don't immediately know how to fix it.
This all spells out work that needs to be done before we can run a bot, including an actual list of pages that have dead links, a functional regex and consensus to tag deadlink sections. Tim1357, Halavais and I have a long standing personal dispute that has nothing to do with Wikipedia. He has written some very disputable and unkind things about me. I am the founder of The Center for Internet research and He is a VP of The Association of Internet Researchers (AOIR). These are organizations with similar purposes and share participants. We are smaller and less well known than they are. The operable understanding is that we are interested in the same things. I have been simply trying to add a link to our website on the pages "Internet research" and "Internet studies". Each time I add Halavais, or his AOIR colleague Buridan, delete my link. I undo the deletion and they undo me. Recently Halavais has raised the Notability issue as the reason for his deletions. As I read the rule on notability they seem to apply pages and not to a link. That aside, IMHO we meet the requirements of the rule. In the end I assert that the deletions are the result of a personal dispute (NPOV) not a Wikipedia rule issue.
I have not asked that his link be removed because I believe that AOIR is a valuable source and reference. I am trying to add a link to our organizations website because, while we are similar, we are also different in our scholarly point of view. My NPOV complaint is based on his mis-application of the rules and his argument based on notability. I ask you to look at both my websites, the http://tcfir.org/bod.cfm/ board of advisors , the http://tcfir-blog.ning.com/ blog memberhip and consider the issue of "notability" and consider this in the context of allowing a simple link, not a page. IMHO the organizations should both be allowed or we should both be dis-allowed. I would be satisfied with either, but I would prefer that both be allowed, because both are important. In either case an NPOV would not exist.

In another matter, there is a biography of Alex Halavais (Biographies_of_living_persons, section 11, #2) there is a link ("Thaumaturgial Compendium") to his personal blog. My understanding is that blogs as sources cannot be allowed if they contain claims about "third parties". There is such a claim in that blog because it is about me and it is not kind. see: Dr. W. Hmm, this seems like something for the Dispute Resolution Page. In my humble opinion, it seems that both of you have a conflict of interest, and should refrain from editing pages that you have a direct, real-world connection to. But I could be wrong, Im not entirely familiar with this. The message I left on your page a week ago was a standard "section blanking" message. I was not trying to get involved with a dispute that you and this other editor have. I encourage you to go to the Dispute Resolution page and choose an option from there. Tim, thanks for weighing in. Naturally, AoIR members are going to have an interest in the internet studies article, just as ACM members will have an interest in computing articles, or ASA members in sociology articles. As noted on the talk page there, I think that the internet studies article is little more than a link dump right now. It's appropriate to link to associated articles in Wikipedia, Association of Internet Researchers among them. Please note that I never added the AoIR link here, and in fact have removed it from another article, and removed the external link from the internet studies article. I feel strongly that "the center for internet research" has misrepresented itself in other contexts, and Wreid's self promotion here doesn't add to the resource. But I have neither time for nor interest in edit wars, and will mark this up as a case where Wikipedia has done a poor job of "self-correcting." - Halavais (talk) 03:46, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

The operable notion in this rant is "According to Halavais" So Tim, apparently Halavais is abidicating to you and so am I. Oddly, I agree with him in that the page has too many links and too little substance. I suggest deletion of the scholarly organizations list. I suggest if you choose to leave the AOIR link in, you also allow TCFIR. "None or Both" That way neither of us get to self-promote. This has been my position all along.
I can't leave this discussion without noting there is only one of us who has misrepresented themselves in this context and admittedly vandalaized it. That person is not me. Now he bad-mouthes the editing checks and balances when it was that same process that detected his vandalism. Does "bad faith" have meaning here. So what do we do now? I will not dispute removing the "scholarly organizations" section entirely. I will not dispute both AOIR and TCFIR links. I will go to WP:DRR if there is one without the other and that means TCFIR without AoIR a well. Fair is Fair.

So, Here is what I've come to. There is a rule here that there must not be original research. That, in short, means that you cannot add links that you to web pages that you created/had a role in creating. I agree that the page is a bit of a Link Dump, hopefully it can be cleaned up soon. I have tagged it with a template that requests that no more links be added. In addition, please keep your outside conflicts out of your editing. If you feel that you cannot work with a particular editor, either reach a resolution with them, or avoid him/her. I emplore you both to take a break from editing this particular article, and come back when you are less heated about it. Hopefully you find Wikipedia a fair place, and do not hesitate to ask me any more questions. (As a note, I recommended WP:DRR because I am unfamiliar with every policy on wikipedia, thus, I will ask another editor to review this decision) Thank You Tim1357 (talk) 02:27, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
