Editing articles for web accessibility

Web accessibility is the goal of making web pages easier to navigate and read. While this is primarily intended to assist those with disabilities, it can be helpful to all readers.

While editing articles, keep in mind the goal of making Wikipedia web accessible. All users, regardless of ability, should be able to read, navigate, and contribute to Wikipedia easily.

The Accessibility section of Wikipedia's Manual of Style (MOS) is a valuable resource that provides helpful guidelines. In addition, Accessibility dos and do nots is a quick summary of the most important guidelines for editors.

WikiProject Accessibility is a group of editors promoting better access for disabled and other users. For more information, such as what you can do to help, see the main project page.

Outline of knowledge

[edit]

Outline of knowledge, categorized as a "list-article" is linked on Portal:Contents, which makes it a significant article on Wikipedia. This article gets about 120 pageviews daily, but its quality appears unsatisfactory to me. Wikipedia's the last major encyclopedia on Earth, so it's the only organization responsible for creating an outline of knowledge. Outline of knowledge suffers from lack of contribution, and I don't think I know what exactly to do about it. I know you realize the value of knowledge organization, let's do something about the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ambujshukla2004 (talkcontribs) 17:25, 30 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is it that, as time goes go by, sometimes we remember or we are reminded to know oneself first (before we try to know anything else); See what you do, respectfully.Arnlodg (talk) 22:12, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Arnlodg: You are in part defined and developed by what you know, which comes from interaction with the universe. All of what is you, including knowledge, comes from outside yourself. Therefore, it is not possible to know yourself first. When embarking on a new endeavor, one needs to learn about it. It changes you as you go along. You are not the same person you were before you started. "Knowing" too much about yourself can be detrimental, if it keeps you from trying, for example, if you "know" you can't make it. Sometimes it is not better to err on the side of caution.
I wonder... How does futures studies fit into the scheme of knowledge? Is it possible to know the future? Does knowledge have to be 100% probability, or can you know something at 90% certainty? There are plans in place to colonize Mars. The plans are knowledge, the colonization isn't (yet), but some people are quite certain that it will happen. Is that knowledge? ;)    — The Transhumanist   10:33, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That we may also 'study' knowledge coming from inside ourselves, is found (searched for) in the certainty of being present (experiencing presence), of oneself...one step at a time towards knowledge that is, always then, ready at hand in front of us...My attitude toward an outline of knowledge then, is knowledge is outside of me and inside of me, but as one entity one being one experience, again respectfully.Arnlodg (talk) 15:36, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Arnlodg: Good point. Come to think of it, invention (by the likes of Ben Franklin, Thomas Edison), and theorizing (Albert Einstein) are methods of knowledge creation or discovery, that come from within.    — The Transhumanist   15:52, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

.....Yes, but could invention be studied as knowledge...I am not trying to be clever, but isn't knowledge also like wave particle duality and the life cycles of galaxies-all inclusive and continuous; that we could 'know' our place in it, in an outline...respects.Arnlodg (talk) 20:33, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Arnlodg: Relatively speaking, I guess. ;)    — The Transhumanist   01:45, 21 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A question

[edit]

At Portal:Egypt I've tried to fix the edit link for the Intro to go directly to the Intro page, but haven't found a fix. Tried "noedit=yes" etc., but not working. Tried tweaking the Intro page itself, but no go. The edit link presently goes directly to the Egypt article. North America1000 19:08, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also, at the Egypt portal, when going to the page or purging the page, there is a "The time allocated for running scripts has expired" error that occurs from time to time, obliterating the page. Any way to fix this?

Lastly, you may want to consider archiving some of your talk page; it is extremely long and takes time to load at 726,071 bytes. I can help you to set-up archiving if you need assistance. Cheers, North America1000 19:25, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Northamerica1000: I'll consider archiving. Thank you.
I'm not getting a time out. How many error messages are you getting, and in what sections are you getting them?
The edit button you wish to fix is not generated by the portal page -- its code is on the Portal:Egypt/Intro subpage, as a parameter in the box-header transclusion.
Hope that helps.    — The Transhumanist   07:37, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the tip. I fixed the intro edit link; surprised I missed that one. The time out errors only occur from time-to-time, perhaps on every 20th page load, or something like that. North America1000 12:11, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Northamerica1000, Evad37, and Certes: I'm picking up errors starting with {{Universities in Egypt}}, and appearing in place of all instances of {{box-header}} below that. The problem seems to be coming from the topics subpage, which gets transcluded, and which in turn has embedded transclusions (that is, lots of navigation box templates are on that subpage). Maybe it is the nested levels of transclusion causing the problem, or just too many transclusions. Perhaps try placing the navigation boxes directly on the base page. If that doesn't work, you could try reducing the number of navigation boxes. I hope that helps.    — The Transhumanist   19:54, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. The errors were occurring above this section, so this may not be the causation. It appears to be rare in occurrence, but I'll keep this in mind. North America1000 00:32, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Satans of Wikipedia?

[edit]

Dear Notorious Portalspammer,

Apparently User:BrownHairedGirl believes we are the Satans of Wikipedia. Please see Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Pointless supra-continental portals. Perhaps I should make up a barnstar for that distiction. The deletionists don't like anything added to Wikipedia except their own contributions.

Yours aye,  Buaidh  talk contribs 23:45, 28 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

More of your usual bilious, ad hominem rubbish, @Buaidh.
I love new encyclopedic content, in articles.
I deplore the creation of pointless, timewasting artefacts which add no value to Wikipedia and which readers shun. That includes the thousnads of automated spam portals created by TTH, which have all been deleted. And it also includes new automated spam portals created in honour of the portalspammer.
In any case, Buaidh, you are out of date. Back in May, TTH wrote: New encyclopedia program features will likely eventually render most portals obsolete. For example, the pop-up feature of MediaWiki provides much the same functionality as excerpts in portals already, and there is also a slideshow feature to view all the images on the current page (just click on any image, and that activates the slideshow).
I had been making the same point for a month or more before TTH picked it up. That's why TTH has moved onto other things: portals are redundant. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:55, 28 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please see User_talk:BrownHairedGirl#Epithets before she deletes it. Portals will eventually be replaced, but regional portals still have a significant function. Yours aye, the  Burgundy Templater  talk contribs 00:34, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Buaidh: Actually, all of WP's navigation systems are redundant, and are expected to be (see WP:CLN). I moved on to other things because of BHG's verbal abuse.    — The Transhumanist   20:27, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Need info about potential transclusion limits

[edit]

Hi TTH: Does Template:Transclude random excerpt have a transclusion limit? I've seen instances where pages will stop transcluding after 100 entries are posted. If this is not the case, then great, but if it is, then for portals with a great deal of subject matter, a separate, second "More selected articles" box may need to be created.

Look forward to hearing your response, North America1000 12:36, 9 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Northamerica1000: I don't remember. A lua time limit is built into the server, that allows all lua scripts as a whole on a page a maximum amount of time to do their thing. Some of the templates' underlying lua scripts also have an internally set limit as to how many data items they will accept, which is presented in their documentation.    — The Transhumanist   20:21, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for replying. Ah, so that's why sometimes pages have timeout errors when taking a long time to load. The Lua time limit. Well, regarding transclusions, maybe I'll ask somewhere at Village pump eventually. North America1000 20:38, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hello again TTH: Can anything be done about the Lua timeouts? I just expanded Portal:Architecture, and now it keeps dumping those stupid "The time allocated for running scripts has expired" errors all over the page. North America1000 02:10, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Northamerica1000: Yes. If you are getting timeouts due to too many transclusions, then that may indicate that your topic is too large (and may need to be split into multiple portals). Or you can wait until computer technology and MediaWiki's capacity expand (due to Moore's law). Or, you can see below for another option...    — The Transhumanist   07:43, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I removed some of the pages I used as transclusions for images, and also moved some content from subpages directly to the main portal page, which stopped the timeouts from occurring. However, I wonder if something can be done to stop the timeouts from occurring in the first place. North America1000 02:37, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Northamerica1000: My guess is that the timeouts are a function of the MediaWiki software. To get that changed, you would need to contact the developers via a request on Fabricator. See Wikipedia:Bug reports and feature requests. Keep in mind that they built the limits in to reduce server load, so as not to slow down the system for others. As time goes on, WikiMedia foundation's resources should grow, and these limits might be raised as server capacity and network bandwidth improves due to advances in computer technology. I've heard that the laptop of today is more powerful than the best supercomputer of 20 years ago, and that this is a trend that will likely continue. The same principle also applies to servers. To watch development at the high-end of the industry, see TOP500.
    • Or, it's a Wikipedia-specific setting. I don't know where that would be covered.    — The Transhumanist   07:47, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for the detailed reply. I've noticed that at times, portal pages load ten times slower compared to main namespace pages. I wonder if they have allocated less bandwidth for portals, since they're viewed much less compared to main namespace content. I appreciate the information, and this is yet another matter that I won't be trying to solve right away; it's complex, and comes across as a quite detailed matter. Maybe I'll just be lazy about it and not worry about it instead. North America1000 09:38, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Portal project banner

[edit]

The WP Portals project banner for talk pages is messing up the Portal talk:Thailand page. I've looked into fixing it, but it may require tweaking the coding in the main banner page that is transcluded on the talk pages. Perhaps you could help to fix this problem. Thanks for your consideration, North America1000 16:20, 21 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Northamerica1000: I couldn't find the bug that transcluded the whole portal. So, I made a copy of the project's banner template, stripped it down to the main message, and pasted it directly onto the talk page, along with an embedded comment and descriptive edit summary. If you have the time, you could find the bug, by pasting the whole template on there, and stripping out code line by line until you find the line that includes the bug. (Or use the "successive halving technique" to isolate the bug, which should be faster).    — The Transhumanist   23:22, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much. Yeah, I substituted the template on my sandbox page a while back and messed around with it, previewing to try to see if I could find what the problem is. You're more of a code geek (a compliment) compared to me, so if you can't find it, it's unlikely I'll find it at this point. At any rate, the talk page looks fine now, which is the main point. Thanks again for helping out with this, as it's appreciated. North America1000 08:16, 26 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

MfD nomination of Portal:Painting

[edit]

Portal:Painting, a page which you created or substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; you may participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Painting and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Portal:Painting during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Robert McClenon (talk) 07:01, 8 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:Outline of George Washington, a page you created, has not been edited in 5 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.

You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available at WP:REFUND/G13.

Thank you for your attention. HasteurBot (talk) 01:21, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Giving editor awards

Whether an editor collaborates with a team of editors on a WikiProject or is improving articles independently, an editor can give a Wikipedia award (often a barnstar) to another deserving editor.

Editors may reward vigorous Wikipedia contributors for their hard work and due diligence by awarding them a fitting barnstar, or other award. In addition to these virtual awards, editors may nominate someone to receive a gift in the mail from the Wikimedia Foundation.

A list of barnstar awards is available at Barnstar award templates.

    To add this auto-updating template to your user page, use {{totd-day-after-next}}
