2019 US Banknote Contest
US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here |

Recent changes
- The API sandbox and help pages now show more clearly when API modules are marked as
internal
. API modules marked as internal were probably internal before. It was easier to miss. You should look for non-internal alternatives. [1]
Problems
- There is a translation tool we use on wikis with more than one language. For a few days it did not create pages for new languages when someone translated a page. The languages did not show in the language bar. This has been fixed. [2]
- The history and diffs can show wrong content. This is because of a cache problem. It will soon be fixed. [3]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 October. It will be on all wikis from 24 October (calendar).
- Reference Previews will be a beta feature on all Wikipedias and some Wikivoyages. It shows you a preview of the footnote when you hover over or click on the number. It has been a beta feature on German and Arabic Wikipedia since April.
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 23 October. See how to join.

Category:Universities in Stockholm
Hi, do you remember creating Category:Universities in Stockholm in 2016? It looks like a near duplicate of Category:Higher education in Stockholm, but only contains three former women's colleges, so I think it could be merged with Category:Defunct universities and colleges in Sweden. TSventon (talk) 10:55, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
- @TSventon: Thanks for the heads-up. I've recategorized the articles, and deleted the category. -- The Anome (talk) 13:08, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

wg*
tomw.config
. The old global variables will be removed later this year. You can know more about it and tell the developers if you want to try this out on your wiki first.

- There will be a new schema for XML dumps. Scripts and apps that use them will need to be updated. If they are not updated they will no longer work. [15]
- The
{{REVISIONID}}
magic word will no longer work in the content namespaces. This is for performance reasons. When you preview a page it returns""
(empty string). When you read a page it returns"-"
(dash). In the future this will also affect other namespaces. The next ones are file and category namespaces. [16]

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.
You have shown interest in the Electronic cigarette topic area. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.
For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

The Anomebot2 and blank lines preceding stub templates
Don't know if this has been brought up before. It's long-standing custom to have two blank lines before stub templates, as described at (WP:STUBSPACING). But The Anomebot2 removes these when it places the {{coord missing}} template. Should this be the case? --Paul_012 (talk) 13:26, 5 December 2019 (UTC)
- It shouldn't be: the bot tries to place the tag before the category and DEFAULTSORT lines, if present, which should precede the stub templates, which should by convention be the final lines in the source text. Can you give me an example of this happening? If it is, I will do my best to fix it. -- The Anome (talk) 18:55, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

Fixing wikibot blank line behavior
@Paul 012: Thanks for your bug report. After the Christmas break, I've tidied up my old and rather sprawling bot codebase, which includes almost a decade of spaghetti code, and isolated the lines of code which cause the unwanted behavior into a single subroutine. I'll do a fix tomorrow, then go back to running the bot. Thanks for giving me the incentive to clean things up. -- The Anome (talk) 00:02, 9 January 2020 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser use very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It can lead to downgrade attacks. Since 9 December you just see a warning. Soon the browser will not connect to the wikis at all. Most are users on Android systems older than 4.4. You can read the browser recommendations. [25]
- Special:LinkSearch has been moved from the "Redirecting special pages" section on Special:SpecialPages to the "Lists of pages" section. [26]
Changes later this week
- Wikis can protect pages so that only some users can edit them. The standard protection levels are Require autoconfirmed or confirmed access and Require administrator access. If your wiki use more protection levels the technical name might be renamed for standardisation. This doesn't affect what users see. [27]

Future changes
- Deepcat and Catgraph will stop working. This will happen at the end of January. This is because you can now use the normal search function instead. [28]
- You can use
<ref follow="…">
to merge footnotes that follow each other. It is meant to be used for digitised books on Wikisource. If the order of the footnotes is wrong no error was shown but the bad <ref> was shown outside the <references /> list. This will change and you will see an error message instead. [29]

Stop Funding Fake News Campaign
Re: your redlink at The Canary. Are you intending to create an article? Thankyou. Djm-leighpark (talk) 18:41, 19 January 2020 (UTC)
- Not yet. Redlinks exist as cues for editors in general to create articles: see WP:REDLINK. It certainly seems to have met the notability criterion, by being the subject of multiple articles in multiple reliable sources: for example, the Jewish Chronicle, the Press Gazette, and Metro. -- The Anome (talk) 19:01, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

- @Djm-leighpark: I'm certainly not OK with removing them. For good reason, WP:REDLINK is an official editing guideline ("a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow"), and WP:WTAF merely an essay (see its header, which states "This page is not one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community"). Problems
- Some mobile diffs have problems. A couple of buttons are not shown. Structured data diffs on Commons are confusing. The developers are working on fixing it. [32][33]
- Administrators on wikis that use Structured Discussions can't move discussion pages. This is a bug. The developers are working on fixing it. [34]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- There is JavaScript code on Special:Undelete for administrators that makes it possible to automatically select multiple checkboxes by holding the "Shift" key and clicking. This code is also loaded by accident on other special pages and on articles. This makes pages slower to load. This will be fixed. If you know of other special pages where this is useful please tell the developers at phab:T232688.

Pings must be signed
Regarding [35], Help:Notifications#Triggering events says: "if the mention is not on a completely new line with a new signature, no notification will be sent". Ineffective partial blocks
Hello The Anome. I have noticed that two users who you blocked today are in fact not blocked at all: Special:Contributions/Sagehippyfuckup and Special:Contributions/Rinkutechservices. They are partial-blocked with no namespaces or pages listed to be blocked. This is because you either unchecked "editing" on the block form, or selected "partial" but didn't choose any pages to block them from. Can you have a look at them please? Regards, ST47 (talk) 01:38, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- Wow. Thanks for letting me know. However it happened, it is not a good thing -- I will try to find out the path through the UI that I followed that led to this. Fortunately, this only seems to have happened 4 times in my last 10,000 log entries, and all seem to be fixed now, but that's still 4 times too many. -- The Anome (talk) 10:56, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi The Anome, I have just finished "Albertype" article, that was a stub and you participated writing this article. I have used your recommended bibliography. I´m spanish art historian woman , and I often create my editions in Spanish wikipedia. Please if you want to check it, because I am quite new in the english Wikipedia.
Thanks...--Pirandello3 (talk) 19:58, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for helping me with Albertype, the process is very similar to collotype and ThatMontrealIP has finished improving the article.
On the other hand, I would ask you the favor if you could review this draft on a Spanish disabled photographer and video artist, Víctor Meliveo, here is the draft I´ve written. I need some experienced or responsible editor to check it and say ok. Is it right? Thanks a lot --Pirandello3 (talk) 17:29, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Problems
- Readers who were not logged in briefly saw the interface in a language decided by their browser. It should normally be in the language of the wiki. This happened for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug. [41]
Changes later this week
- If you forget your password you can ask for a new one to be sent to your email address. You need to know your email address or your username. You will now be able to choose that you need to enter both your email address and your username. This will be a preference. This is to get fewer password reset emails someone else asked for. [42]
- When you asked for a new password you could see if the username didn't exist on Special:PasswordReset. Now the page will show the username you entered and tell you an email has been sent if the username exists. This is for better security. [43]
- On Special:WhatLinksHere you can see what other pages link to a page. You can see if the link is from a redirect. You can now see which section the redirect links to. [44]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 March. It will be on all wikis from 5 March (calendar).
Future changes
- The developers are working on a new interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. You can give feedback. [45]
- There is a vote on the creation of a new user group called abuse filter manager. The vote runs from March 1 to March 31 on Meta.

The Anomebot2
I don't want to seem importunate, but it's been three months since the bot made a run of adding {{coord missing}} tags to articles. Are you having problems with it? Deor (talk) 17:15, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

- @Deor: I'm now running the bot: I had to do a fix first to avoid it removing formatting quirks from articles, something that turned out to be quite complex to do correctly given the gnarly nature of raw wikitext. -- The Anome (talk) 12:26, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Idea for Bot
After walking through a Marina a looking at the boats I have had an idea, they most have transponders on them that transmit they location and basic unique identifiers. I thought if there was a bot that dripped that data into wikidata, we could fill in missing identifiers and allow someone use the "around me" function to find out more about the boats going by.
The idea is just in the research phase but wanted to run it past you as the owner of a bot that does Geo stuff.
I have found a couple of DB's that act as repository of this data
seems to be a source of data for this but requires purchase and running of a transceiver so as to contribute to the database (not just use the data)
It maybe easier to do an air one first
getting the data from https://opensky-network.org/apidoc/python.html#retrieving-data and using http://www.airframes.org/ to convert the ICAO 24 id to something wikidata supports
What do yo think of this as an idea? Back ache (talk) 08:08, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

Requesting kind help
Hi,
Lately I created an article Draft:My body my choice (Feminism) regarding the aprox. 50 years old slogan. I myself want the article to be inclusive and balanced with global perspective. Since I am from south Asian studies I do have my own limitations, and article has rightly came under criticism being not global enough and not critical enough.
Since you have earlier worked on articles like Mouvement de libération des femmes I wish to request you to see if you can support the upcoming article Draft:My body my choice (Feminism). Like french wikipedians have suggested me with example links like
- https://www.cairn.info/revue-vacarme-2014-2-page-1.html
- https://cafaitgenre.org/2014/09/15/slogans-4-mon-corps-est-a-moi/
May be above or different sources you would like to support the article in some way.
Some people are getting confused with south Asian article already in main space named Mera Jism Meri Marzi but it has geographically limited context of South Asia i.e. India & Pakistan. Where as Draft:My body my choice (Feminism) is expected to be a global inclusive.
Requesting whatever possible direct editing / copy editing support.
Thanks and warm regards

Advert tag on wikiHow page
Hi there, I am the new Community Manager over at wikiHow. I'm pretty new to wikis, so to help build up my knowledge I've been spending some time on Wikipedia - seeing how things work and what another successful wiki culture is like. This week I happened to take a look at the wikiHow page and saw that you placed an {{advert}} tag on it, indicating that it contains content that is written like an advertisement. We would only ever want our page to be informational, not promotional, so I was wondering if you might be able to share some of the specific issues or concerns that could be addressed to improve the article?
Of course, because I'm affiliated with the wikiHow project, I might not be the appropriate person to edit the page, but I’d appreciate the chance to find a collaborative path forward to fixing these issues. Since you’re the person who placed the tag, and a highly experienced Wikipedian to boot, I thought you’d be a good person to reach out to. JayneG2 (talk) 17:48, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Silvercorp USA
Hello The Anome,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Silvercorp USA for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly indicate why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.
If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

Sado-masochism protection
Hi, are you opposed to unprotecting Sado-masochism? I don't see any history of vandalism. Anarchyte (talk • work) 10:22, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Anarchyte: I think this particular page wasn't a vandalism target, but got protected as part of a series of page protections applying to a range of similar pages that were the target of vandalism. At the moment, it's only semi-protected, so any autoconfirmed editor can edit it, and I think that's probably OK for now. -- The Anome (talk) 11:48, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- Note:I've also updated it, and several other similar other redirects, to point to Sadomasochism, instead of BDSM. -- The Anome (talk) 12:42, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- Sado-masochism, Consensual sadomasochism, and Sado-Masochism are the only remaining pages in this series that are semi-protected. The rest, initially protected by KrakatoaKatie, have been unprotected because she agreed that they were no longer under threat. I'll default to your ruling on these remaining ones, but I thought you should know that. Additionally, I'd like your opinion on another redirect you protected. WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP was indef full protected after a couple of socks attacked it. Do you think that four years later, we can unprotect it? Anarchyte (talk • work) 09:26, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
- Done Thanks for letting me know. Since I protected these to keep them in sync with the others which have now been unprotected. I can't now see any reason to keep them protected. -- The Anome (talk) 09:41, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
- I've also unprotected WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP. -- The Anome (talk) 09:43, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I've got some more redirects that I'd like you to vet before I take any action. On this page, if you sort by protector, there are some more that relate to other areas of BDSM. I've opened some histories at random and none had any vandalism since you protected them. As it stands, this series of redirects is comprehensively protected, so if you decide to unprotect these I'll follow up with any related ones and try to make sure they're similarly unprotected (if I find any). Anarchyte (talk • work) 09:49, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

username block
Hi Anome, I saw you just blocked Cervix service. This is a person who joined Wikipedia to improve articles related to women's health, anatomy, reproductive health, family planning, etc. They are not selling a service or trolling. Could you elaborate on the block a bit more? Is it that any anatomy is inappropriate in a username? Thanks. --Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 22:12, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- It sounds a lot like trolling to me, but I take your point. I will unblock it and notify them about the concern about the name. -- The Anome (talk) 22:16, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry, left part out. The person is participating in a program I'm involved with, so I can confirm they are not a troll. Don't know if this was sufficiently implied by my previous message. Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 22:37, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- I'm happy to un-warn them, then. But I hope you can see the username is still quite unfortunate. -- The Anome (talk) 23:00, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. I mean, I can see where it might make sense to disallow reproductive system references or certain parts of human anatomy in usernames, but I wanted to be clear that's the case so I could provide advice to the person accordingly. I'm not all that up on the finer points of the username policy in that regard. It just seems like context should matter, and someone using an anatomical term directly related to their scientific interest in contributing to Wikipedia seems like it's at least on the ok side of the gray area. YMMV. :) Thanks. Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 02:00, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

Unblock request
I am denied to edit from my office computer because of an IP block. Please give me a way to edit from my office computer. I am not sure whether IP block exemption works in this case. ~SS49~ {talk} 12:51, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- @SS49: IP block exemption should work for this. You can find out how to request it at Wikipedia:IP block exemption. -- The Anome (talk) 13:09, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks The Anome. I requested this at Wikipedia:Unblock Ticket Request System. I unintentionally made IP address public in earlier edit in this thread. Please make it invisible by deleting the revision or by any means. Thanks again. ~SS49~ {talk} 13:23, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- Hi The Anome! My request is not responded yet. Please grant IP block exemption privilege. Thanks! ~SS49~ {talk} 03:28, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
- Granted for the length of time needed. You shouldn't need it indefinitely, so I've set the IP block exemption to expire after the IP block expires. -- The Anome (talk) 10:36, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Some articles have tables that can be sorted in different ways. For example a list of countries can be sorted alphabetically but you can click on the size column to sort them by size. If you clicked on the column a second time it would sort the countries from the bottom to the top instead. A third click will now take you back to the original sorting. [93]
- Self-closed tags now work as in the HTML5 specifications. This means you should stop using some of them.
<b/>
is an example of a self-closed tag that won't work.area, base, br, col, embed, hr, img, input, keygen, link, meta, param, source, track, wbr
can be self-closed. Pages with tags that should not be self-closed have been listed in a tracking category since 2016. They will be listed in Special:LintErrors/self-closed-tag. This doesn't affect<references />
or<ref />
. [94] - There is a banner called
WikidataPageBanner
. It is for example used by the Wikivoyages, Wikimedia Russia and the Catalan, Basque, Galician and Turkish Wikipedias. It will now been seen by mobile visitors too. Before this it was only seen on desktop. The wikis should update instructions onMediaWiki:Sitenotice
so that editors know to test and style for mobile too. [95][96]
Changes later this week
- You can now edit MassMessage descriptions through the API. This is useful for tools and gadgets. [97]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 June. It will be on all wikis from 11 June (calendar).
Future changes
- A temporary fix helped wikis make their main pages more mobile friendly. This was in 2012. It has not been recommended since 2017. It will not work after 13 July. Wikis should use TemplateStyles instead. 118 wikis need to fix this. You can read more and see if your wiki is affected. [98]

This edition of the Editing newsletter includes information the Wikipedia:Talk pages project, an effort to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. The central project page is on MediaWiki.org.

@
. You can test the new features on the Beta Cluster. Some other wikis will have a chance to try the Beta Feature in the coming months. - New requirements for user signatures: Soon, users will not be able to save invalid custom signatures in Special:Preferences. This will reduce signature spoofing, prevent page corruption, and make new talk page tools more reliable. Most editors will not be affected.
- New discussion tool: The Editing team is beginning work on a simpler process for starting new discussions. You can see the initial design on the project page.
- Research on the use of talk pages: The Editing team worked with the Wikimedia research team to study how talk pages help editors improve articles. We learned that new editors who use talk pages make more edits to the main namespace than new editors who don't use talk pages.

Just wanted to let you know that an editor is edit-warring to remove the paragraph on "illusory pattern perception" you added to this article. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:54, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
- Talk:QAnon#Seeking consensus on "illusory pattern perception" line in the lead Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:07, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
- Hi. I didn't add the paragraph, which I think is flawed. My edit to it was to remove au unsupported claim that the phenomenon was a mental illness. If anyone wants to remove the paragraph entirely, that's fine with me. -- The Anome (talk) 07:57, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- Update: I've checked both sources, and the original paper they reference, and none of them seem to mention QAnon anywhere. This suggests that this is thus original research, and the paragraph needs to be deleted, and not reinstated, per the notice at the top of Talk:QAnon. -- The Anome (talk) 08:09, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
