Your redirect of Internexus English Language School back to Regent College

[edit]

Hi,

I'm with Internexus Los Angeles. We discovered that the Internexus English Language School wikipeida page had been set to redirect to Regents College in the UK. We operated a campus of our ESL school at Regents for several years but that relationship is no longer active.

We revised the page to give current info about our network but it keeps getting reset to the prior redirect to Regents.

Just fyi, technically this redirect is a trademark violation since we own Internexus as a registered mark for our network of English Language Schools.

How can we prevent this from happenign in the future?

Thansk Internexus Los Angekes — Preceding unsigned comment added by Internexus Los Angeles (talkcontribs) 16:19, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Internexus Los Angeles: Well for starters the username you picked is a violation of the username policy here, see WP:ORGNAME. Secondly, you must disclose any paid editing, see WP:PAID, your conflict of interest is already quite clear. And if you have any issues with the content then use the article's talk page and raise your concerns there. Shellwood (talk) 16:30, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for help with fair-use image tag

[edit]

Hello, I uploaded File:The 35th Annual National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Suncoast Chapter Emmy Award Winners.pdf to Wikipedia. This is a list of the NATAS Suncoast Chatper Emmy Award Winners in 2011. This list is so important. The Suncoast Chapter does not archive before 2013. They gave me this list via Facebook Messenger. I have reached a stopping point in the process of uploading the file. Would you please consider helping me with this file with a fair-use image tag? I need the help. Thank you,--Wyn.junior (talk) 17:40, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Shellwood. I rarely log in Wikipedia, so just receive your message. Thanks for the noting. But is there any problem with the link I added before? I used that freeware WinX DVD Author (if I remember correctly) once and thought it is a kind of DVD authoring software. So I add it to the the page List of DVD authoring applications. And because it is free, I thought it would be ok to leave a link.

Anyway, I just want to know if it violates some regulations of Wikipedia or not, so that I could be more careful about my editing hereafter. Thanks!--u say it best when u say nothing at all (talk) 04:07, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Due to the almost daily vandalism this page receives, don't you think it should be afforded protection status indefinitely?

Yeah I agree, a request has been made. Shellwood (talk) 01:04, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Shellwood. Sorry to contact you out of the blue like this. I have no evidence to back up what I am about to write, but I have noticed a vast increase in vandalism on, particularly, true crime Wiki. articles over the last few months from random IP addresses, new accounts and accounts very seldom used over the years but, lo and behold, suddenly becoming active again to vandalize and am becoming increasingly convinced it is the same person or small group of people responsible. I could be wrong, but there you go. Regards, --Kieronoldham (talk) 01:14, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies

Hello Shellwood,

I’m a Dutch teacher and I teach study skills (and Dutch and drama) to my students (13/14 years old). Most of them go to Wikipedia to find information for reports or presentations. I wanted to show them the reliability of Wikipedia as a source. That’s why I placed myself in a few pages. I fully intended to delete everything after today, since I had my last class about this subject today. I’m sorry for your inconvenience.

Kind regards,

Adminship

[edit]

Hi Shellwood. As you probably know, I occasionally wander round talk pages thinking "I wonder who'd be a good RfA candidate in future"? In your case, you do a lot of anti-vandalism, much of which I notice, and having seen you be "first on the scene" at main page disruption several times, you would make good use of the block button. However, the obvious problem is while I might be able to be convinced to do a free pass on "Why admins should create content" under the right circumstances (eg: Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Cyberpower678 2), many editors won't, and that's where things will get tricky. I wonder if Oshwah has any further advice? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:21, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Candidates passing an RFA citing their recent changes patrolling and anti-vandalism work as the basis of their experience and the need for the tools is very rare. While having a high degree of demonstrated experience in recent changes patrolling is a great thing to see in an RFA candidate, that experience alone is almost never seen as sufficient enough for an RFA to pass. Participants in the RFA process don't just want to see a "good vandal fighter" but with little or low experience to show in other places; they want to see someone who has a great talent in an area that's necessary and essential on Wikipedia, but also someone who has well-rounded experience in many pre-requisite areas and projects: A good CSD log record and with little amount of declines, a good AFD record that shows mostly green across the board when the stats page is opened, and the participation and experience in other places and areas around Wikipedia. While the lack of article creation and expansion experience isn't a deal breaker to most participants depending on your answers to the questions in your RFA application, it is a deal breaker to a significant number of editors who believe that at least some experience is essential. I can say that a good group of support votes in my last RFA cited my article creation and expansion experience (the two articles I helped bring to GA status) as being part of their personal criteria. I hope that the information I've detailed here provides a good insight on my observations with RFA candidates in this area. If I can be of further assistance with anything else, please don't hesitate to let me know. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:49, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.18

[edit]

Hello Shellwood,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.

New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019

[edit]

Hello Shellwood,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.

QUALITY of REVIEWING

Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.

Backlog

The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.

Move to draft

NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.

Notifying users

Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.

PERM

Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.

Other news

School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at New Page Review Coordinators - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

I started undoing your reversion of User:LDWAFootpaths's additions of LDWA links to articles on UK long-distance walks, but then I saw there were quite a lot of them, so thought I ought to consult. Although the username suggests a conflict of interest, I don't think the links themselves are actually invalid. The LDWA (of which I'm not a member or advocate) is a recognised authority on long-distance paths in the UK, it's a reliable source and in my opinion their links warrant inclusion. Would you object if I resurrected the links? Dave.Dunford (talk) 18:34, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism of SA pages

[edit]

I've noticed you've been rolling back some of the vandalism on the infoboxes of SA cities. It appears multiple accounts and IP addresses are vandalizing the same infoboxes over and over again. I'm not really sure how to respond to this. Perhaps a more experienced user such as yourself can help? See the edit history of Cape Town for an example. Francoisdjvr (talk) 11:26, 2 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Francoisdjvr: Hi, I can't say I have put much thought on SA related articles. The thing that struck me in this case was that the new numbers didn't match those in the source, and thus must be reverted unless someone can provide new source or show a new census but that was not the case here. I was not sure if this was some subtile vandalism or someone acting in good faith providing correct information without citing a source, but having seen the history now clearly shows something odd going on. Having the Twinkle gadget enabled will ease the work with both warning users and reporting them to WP:AIV if needed. Thank you for cleaning up the mess. New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019

[edit]

Hello Shellwood,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Collapsible option must be coded

[edit]

I see you have added {{collapsible option}} to many templates which don't have this option, e.g. [2]. A template must be coded to have the option, e.g. by passing | state = {{{state|}}} to {{Navbox}}. {{National squad}} does not have the option so it would currently be impossible to add the option to navboxes which use {{National squad}} and don't call {{navbox}} directly.
