Wikimedia UK 2.0 Voting is open :-)

A warm hello to all those signed up as guarantor members of the soon-to-be-rebooted UK chapter! Voting is now open over at meta - there's tons of information online over there, and the mailing list has been very active too. Discussion, comment (and even the inevitable technical gremlins!) are most welcome at the meta pages, otherwise please do send in your vote/s, and tell a friend about the chapter too :-) Privatemusings (talk) 22:29, 20 September 2008 (UTC)I'm not actually involved in the election workings, and am just dropping these notes in to help try and spread the word :-) I welcome any or all comment too, but 'election related' stuff really is better suited to the meta pages :-)

Look at you!

Wow, my computer blows up and forces me to go away for a while, and I return to find you're an Administrator! Congratulations, dear! ArielGold 17:20, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Hee hee, it wasn't by choice, I had a major computer failure, and no way to edit. But I'm back, so you should come back too! :) ArielGold 18:38, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

User:Ecemaml

Hello Scarian! Not that I doubt your judgment in the slightest, but I'd like to point you to the recent discussion here. I'd also like to draw your attention to the fact that the aforementioned user has made a number of personal remarks—one of which has revealed non-public personal information by advertising my real life location—and has also sent me a snarky off-Wiki message in which he claims that he will no longer assume good faith. I hope that's not his idea of moving forward cordially! How do you suggest I deal with this? Thanks, RedCoat10talk 12:46, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

I would like to ask you to reconsider the closure. Yes, it's a big and complicated case, but a CU alone wouldn't be sufficient, as laid out by other editors who have spoken up. If you prefer not to re-open, I would ask that you provide some specific guidelines on how to proceed. --GoodDamon 17:21, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

I respectfully suggest dropping the whole matter. The motives behind this fishing expedition should be clear enough to any neutral observer. As Workerbee said, use the words "Unrelated" and "SSP is not for fishing," and tell them to sod off. For those who insist there are stylistic similarities between us, I suggest that you look at the style of citing references, and the fact that I italicize the names of publications and he does not. Workerbee and I are different people, probably living in different states if not different regions of the country. 300wackerdrive (talk) 17:40, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
In the interest of fairness, I always check things twice if request. Looking into it further. If it's true that you're not the same people, then you have nothing to be wary of. ScarianCall me Pat! 18:02, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

I have never participated in one of these processes, so forgive me if i overstep a line here. I want to note that a user, Kossack4Truth, that was a suspected sockpuppeteer of user:Workerbee74 was blocked on October 12 for violating a topic ban via the Acorn article. On october 13, the user account 300wackerdrive was created and began editing in the same, contended, portions of the Acorn article that kossack4truth had been.Bali ultimate (talk) 18:21, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Revert

Just because somone has multiple accounts; doesn't mean they cannot contribute to the encyclopedia. and he isn't a sockpuppet. he had another account that was blocked from username policy and he got a new account. You need to realize this before reverting edits. - -The Spooky One (talk to me) 18:37, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

His original username was HentaimanXT or something like that, which was banned. The edits you reverted of his were constructive edits, not vandlism of any form. - -The Spooky One (talk to me) 18:47, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
also, his other account is SlayerXT, which he stoppped editing on in Early august and switched to SlayerXTT, I don't see how that's a sockpuppet. - -The Spooky One (talk to me) 18:49, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Last time i checked, you can have 2 accounts, as long as you don't abuse them. He had quite a bit of edits that were reverted; but it's best to AGF. He stopped editing on SlayerXT in early august, since then he's only edieted on SlayerXTT. Please explain to me how this is a violation of any rules. - -The Spooky One (talk to me) 19:06, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Megadeth Article

Would it be possible to stop all editing on the Megadeth genre section until a consensus is reached on the discussion? The Megadeth thing is degenerating into an edit war, and I believe "MetalKommandment" was blocked for the same reason.

Edit: The issue is the hard rock genre that is put as a main genre.

I also think that I see an Angry Sh*tlicker IP editing around a block. But I am not sure just yet. Haven't slept well in the last few days (you know why) so my Wiki-instincts are slow. Remind me later to re-review the Angry S IP. I have a lot on my mind. Re looking back on the M_deth article I count about 10 different anons (not from 1 location... from all corners of the globe) and 5 different editors with lengthy edit histories restoring the disputed HR link after its been deleted. I only count 3 accounts(1 being edit warrior/socky-socky MetalKommandink) that rm the link. And 2 IPs that rm the link all the IPs coming from only 2 different ranges. (a 24.x and a 69.x range) So it's about a 14 to 5 score Just based on the edit history of the page. On the talk page the discussion is dead even when you discard the socks. Quite a battlefield. I will keep patrolling for the Angry S IP(s). I am sure he is following the bot that is going around unlinking nationalities and dates (re: wp:overlink) and re-adding the links because he thinks they look better :D. You made a bad threat to block, Ceoil made some pretty bad responses and edit summaries. We don't need a blood fest. I'm not asking you guys toi hold hands in the park but Ceoil's recent block was an error freely admitted by the blocking admin and it doesn't need to be held over his head IMHO. Rightful Editing on Avenged Sevenfold contd.

As for my editing of Avenged Sevenfold's page it is rightfully so. They in no way shape or form classify as any sort of metal or metalcore (especially). At least currently. You mentioned sources. Why undo my own edit when the previous ones were unsourced as well? If you try to classify Avenged Sevenfold using the characteristics listed of heavy metal and metalcore it is obvious that they will not fit the mould.

As for my edit on City of Evil, it is also rightly done. The source that was used for the first two (and originally) listed genres also includes the genres I added in right next to the other two. So I used the exact same source. —Preceding unsigned comment added by TapOut 013 (talkcontribs) 21:46, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Exactly right. They are not sourced. So who's point of view is it that is now seemingly "default" on that page? Somebody had to list their own point of view for those genres to be displayed. As for me, I am staying as neutral as possible. There is no bias. But it's like saying the sky is green and the grass is blue. I will not attempt to edit the page any further. I was just trying to make things right. Apparently somebody else's "point of view" is posing problematic. That is all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by TapOut 013 (talkcontribs) 02:36, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Scarian, I said that the appearance was bad because of your stated connections to the political left, and because of the well know anti-Zionist views of the Left. Because the issue involved had to do with content of the anti-Zionism article the appearance was bad. I did, and still do, think the appearance of neutrality would have been better served if you had left the decision on the block to another administrator. As for you implying, as you do above, that I am hostile you because of your leftist politics, I am a life-long socialist and am certainly not hostile to those who are in agreement with my own political views.
Since I have apparently offended you for a second time, I want to say that I am twice sorry about that. I will assume that you acted in good faith, even if I wish it was someone other than you who had acted.
By the way, I have no idea what Peter cohen is talking about when he says I "smeared" him. I have no recollection of saying anything about him at all. Malcolm Schosha (talk) 14:04, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

One-Revert Edit

Yes, I know I've been a bit vulgar, but none of the IPs want to discuss the individual articles. I posted on the talk pages (a month ago). Trying to contact the individual IPs won't either.

At the first point, why am I "becoming a bother"? They should need verifiable sources to add information; I shouldn't require that to take it away. "The edit history supports consensus." It didn't until about a month ago. When people started getting the idea that all post-'90 Megadeth albums were Risk (album), then they all silently decided that was right. No discussion first. I would like a discussion over this matter, though I suggest going to the talk page for these individual albums.

And the moment the main Megadeth page has its semi-protection expire, they'll come back to that page. It's a bit hard trying to contact random IPs that change once a week. -MetalKommandant (talk) 15:12, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm struggling a bit with this user (You might remember him as you blocked him). I saw this edit of his (Notice the anti-semetism?), so I went and left an AGF message here, and he replied here, and then of course my obligatory reply. You don't need to read every diff (I wouldn't), but it's just basically the whole feel of how things are going down with this guy. His pov-pushing and general religious ignorance (Calling people who practice Islam "Islams") have overstayed their welcome, would you not agree? Looking forward to hearing back from you. ScarianCall me Pat! 13:14, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the notice.
And though I do see problems, I'm not sure if it's block-worthy, yet.
If confusion continues, perhaps it might help to explain to the user that actions by one or more individuals should not necessarily be considered actions of a larger group of individuals. In other words, just because someone who may be Jewish takes an action, doesn't mean that all Jews are responsible for that action. (The same goes for "Islams".)
Hope this helps. - jc37 07:08, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

I see you agree. Question... how "Wiki-cool" is it for a user account called RonBumblefoot to edit only the Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal article? And does Bald Freak Music pass WP:CORP or is it just a re-direct waiting to happen? The Real Libs-speak politely 17:51, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
As a follow up to his first, remember, don't Bite the newcomer. I'm 100 percent sure Sum41dude is SlayerXTT, but that doesn't automatically mean he's a vandal. If he wants to edit wikipedia, let him. Obviosly, he's just trying to help out and it seems were biting him a bit. He just needs some reminders about sources and that kind of stuff. Just don't go automatically reverting every single one of his edits. See if they are contructive or not before doing anything. - -' The Spook (TALK) (Share the Love with Barnstars) 23:22, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
And looking at his edits; some of them did need reverting; but others were reverted when they were positive edits. It seems that User:BillyTalent88 is also a SlayerXT sock, but so far, the edits have been non-controversial and havn't made a mess of anything. - -' The Spook (TALK) (Share the Love with Barnstars) 21:45, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
That means he can be blocked without a rollback. I will check if any of the edits ignored the template guidelines. The Real Libs-speak politely 22:05, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
As expected. Ignoring template:musical artist and WP:ALBUM. As per usual. The Real Libs-speak politely 22:11, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
He was at it again today and, as expected, has worn his welcome out with the usual ignorance of formatting and discussion/consensus. The Real Libs-speak politely 22:14, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Please try to be careful, it seems like your just randomly reverting ever single one of his edits again. example, this edit you reverted when it was fixing the genres. and in this edit you reverted another helpful edit. and this one too.

You Really need to stop reverting every edit of his, and judge individual edits, and only revert them if it's genre trolling or vandalism. - -' The Spook (TALK) (Share the Love with Barnstars) 22:58, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

That takes too long. Your own reverting back to the blocked user's edits restored some pages back to "ignore format rules" versions. Which meant a double... 'double-checking'... which resulted in a dozens of vandals slipping through the cracks during the directions. Sometimes eggs must be broken. The Real Libs-speak politely 23:15, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Laziness is not an excuse. on some of the edits, the blocked user fixed information that was incorrect. reverting the edits removed true information and added false info, not to point any fingures, but by definition, that's vandalism. - -' The Spook (TALK) (Share the Love with Barnstars) 23:55, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
It seems he's back, but as a user named Sum88

Instead of just randomly blocking him, how about explaining to him what he did wrong and why it's not allowed. Myself being somone who once didn't understand some of wikipedia's policies and was almost blocked because of it... I received proper explanation of what i was doing wrong and stopped. Let me put this in a metaphor: if somone came up to you and punched you in the face every time they met you, and you didn't know why, it would really bug you. but if the person told you "i dislike you becuase.... so i'm punching you in the face!" that would seem better, sure, it's still a punch in the face, but hey. Hope that helped. - -' The Spook (TALK) (Share the Love with Barnstars) 19:20, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

But nonetheless; you've earned this:

GA

Hi. I'm not very familiar with GA criteria (I spend a lot of time at FAC) and wondered if you'd take a quick squint at Graeme Pollock for me and let me know if you think the article is close to GA standard... and if so, what are the main improvements required? Cheers. --Dweller (talk) 17:11, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi. Wow. Amazing stuff, thanks. All extremely useful. The only quibble (it's a minor one) is that we've long successfully argued with cricket FAs that the terminology need only be wikilinked, not explained, to carefully walk the line between dumbing down and impenetrability. Other than that - fantastic, thanks. --Dweller (talk) 19:47, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Wikimedia UK v2.0

Hello! Thanks for showing an interest in Wikimedia UK v2.0. Formation of the company is currently underway under the official name "Wiki UK Limited", and we are hoping to start accepting membership in the near future. We have been drawing up a set of membership guidelines, determining what membership levels we'll have (we plan on starting off with just standard Membership, formerly known as Guarantor Membership, with supporting membership / friends scheme coming later), who can apply for membership (everyone), what information we'll collect on the application form, why applications may be rejected, and data retention. Your input on all of this would be appreciated. We're especially after the community's thoughts on what the membership fee should be. Please leave a message on the talk page with your thoughts.

Also, we're currently setting up a monthly newsletter to keep everyone informed about the to-be-Chapter's progress. If you would like to receive this newsletter, please put your username down on this page.

Thanks again. Mike Peel (talk) 19:56, 8 November 2008 (UTC) (Membership Secretary, Wikimedia UK [Proposed])

What to do with this user Nikitn [12]? Now he has crossed the line I would say. Today it's 3RR at Battle of Poltava. As far as I can see he hasn't done anything constructive here at Wikipedia at all, but just going around changing figures to much exaggerated Russian ones that has no real sources. And it wouldn't surprise me if he is the same as user 88.91.27.212[13]. Närking (talk) 21:07, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Possible compromised account?

On the theory that no admin would ever behave like this, this, and this, I am assuming that this account has been compromised. Or, if not, then clearly Scarian needs a major vacation from being an admin. This is not how it is done. I've done a desysop.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 00:16, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

No, no compromised account, just melodramatic irritation. I have apologised to Luke here. I quite agree that desysopping me was the correct route as my behaviour was without reason and completely illogical. Sorry for taking up your time! ScarianCall me Pat! 00:32, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
'Done.' Thanks for the quick and responsible response. I recommend a bit of a wikivacation next time something starts to cause you to get that riled up. Or take pleasure in an absurdly civilized response to a difficult situation. Instead of "This guy is a fucking cock and he is pissing me off right now" try "I am sorry, kind sir, but I remain unpersuaded by your comments. I am quite sure the fault is all mine, and yet in good conscience I cannot follow the course of action you recommend." :)--Jimbo Wales (talk) 15:28, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
heh! - or better yet, go have some fun somewhere else, and try and de-escalate at all times on the wiki :-) (personally, I'm not totally into Jimbo's proposed wording, because it runs the risk, to me, of coming across as a bit of a smartarse... and nobody likes a smartarse, right!? :-) Anywhooo... I was swinging by to say 'hi' after your notes on my talk page, and I've just caught up with all the broo ha ha. It's not really that big a deal, Pat, and I hope you're chilled out about it. Good for you for realising you kicked off a bit, and that there were better ways to deal - and I'd say not to sweat the buttons, and find the fun in the wiki once more :-) cheerio :-) Privatemusings (talk) 02:04, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

A reflection on the ripplings on the surface: Had you not been subject to being heavily socked, you would not have responded so, Jimbo would not have blocked you, the multiple sock drawers would not have been opened, nor would we be aware of any meat puppet issues. Although this can't have gone down in your diary as one your most enjoyable days on the planet, now you have been resysopped by Jimbo ready for when you wish to return, the path you took, though upsetting, was surely worth it.--Alf melmac 00:18, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Wiki UK Ltd Membership applications now invited!

Hello,

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Wiki UK Limited is now inviting membership applications! You can download the application form in PDF format from meta:Image:Wiki_UK_Ltd_membership_application_form.pdf

Information is given on the form about membership fees (£12/year standard, £6 for concessions); these need to be paid by cheque initially, although we hope to accept other forms of payment in the future. Applications should be submitted to me at the address given on the form. If you have any queries about the application process, please let me know.

Thank you for your support so far; I look forward to receiving your membership application.

No Mercy (2007)

Hello, about a month ago you started a review for No Mercy (2007) and found it to be in bad shape, but the nominator dropped off and failed to reply to any concerns. I decided to take a crack at it over the last couple days and rewrote significant portions of the article, and I think it should be alright for a review now. I'd very much appreciate it if you could give a review of the article so we can finally get this one done. Cheers, DoomsDay 20:14, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

I was coming here to mention the same thing. :) The original nominator still doesn't have internet access, but I am certainly willing to take care of any issues brought up in the review. Nikki311 21:29, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Neutrality

  • Capturing the isolation and melancholy of Harrison Ford's character Rick Deckard, the Vangelis score is as much a part of the dystopian environment as the decaying buildings and ever-present rain. [1]

I am aware that this was not a significant breach of policy. But I felt that it was sufficient.
