Thanks for the help with the redirects. I appreciate it. I almost never create soft redirects and therefore I am not very familiar with them.

DYK nom for HMS Phoenix (N96)

Hi Ryan, I have reviewed your DYK nom at Template talk:Did you know/HMS Phoenix (N96) and there is still a small issue I would like to see addressed. Could you respond at the nominations page? Thanks. Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:22, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

The image is not especially good at 100px, so I have promoted the hook without the image. It is in Prep 3 now. Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:16, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
I think the cropped version looks pretty good though. Aspects of the submarine are clearly discernible and the wake is crisp. Ryan Vesey Review me! 03:20, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Nice to see you

at Territorial architecture. However your last change (at least in terms of the article's layout) "The style remained in use until 1900. It came back into use in 1930 in the form of Territorial Revival architecture." Is going to need some work because I am finding Territorial styles houses from the 1920s - which puts them between the two styles as we how have them. In any case, it is nice to be involved in a good-faith effort such as this. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 15:38, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

The Conron and Lent reference is from a magazine, New Mexico Architecture, which I have. Almost all of my references are from books in my library, I rarely use stuff from the www, so links don't exist, that I am aware of. What more can I add to that citation? Do you need a direct quote for something? Carptrash (talk) 15:43, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

DYK for HMS Phoenix (N96)

Casliber (talk · contribs) 08:02, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

The Kingdom Tower DYK is today

Can you revert poor edits, it hasn't received any IP vandalism yet, but a few mediocre registered editor have made edits that would be better not made, so can you undo bad edits at some points during the next 3-8 hours? I've made the article significantly better even since the GA nom, and today is the day tons of people will see it; it will look silly with non content-adding additions, which is the only thing I ever too. I think it's just silly to look at the revision history of most highly trafficked articles and see page after page of stagnantly fluctuating byte length because all the edits are as pointless as banter. Daniel Christensen (talk) 03:18, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

I would but I'm not going to be on much while it is on the main page. I open at work tomorrow and am logging off early. Ryan Vesey Review me! 03:31, 14 August 2011 (UTC)
The DYK is over already, why was it immediately at the bottom of the list so that it was the first to be pushed off? Is it percieved as a bad article? It was the last DYK right from the start, even though most DYK's are much shorter and not GA's. Oh well, hopefully it can be "in the news" at some point, like if there's an official construction ceremony. Daniel Christensen (talk) 11:03, 14 August 2011 (UTC)
Nope, the order on the list has nothing to do with when they are removed. Each group of DYK's is on the main page for 8 hours. Ryan Vesey Review me! 18:09, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi Ryan. I'm just wondering if you might not have preferred to have created this at WP:RFA/RADICAL where it would gain maximum exposure and feedback. Past research has shown that Wikipedia project pages are more likely to be on the watchlists of a broader readership than individual user projects. The 'radical' sub page was created on the request of several members the task force for just such interesting new ideas. Of course it's entirely up to you. If you need any help with anything don't hesitate to drop me a line. Best, --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 11:32, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Power Rangers images

Are you on a personal mission to delete all Power Rangers images? These are TV screenshots that illustrate the subjects of the articles they are placed on, and there are NO free replacements for TV screenshots since Power Rangers is a work of fiction. ANDROS1337TALK 17:37, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

I am not on a personal mission to delete them all. My tagging was a result of the discussion at Talk:Other Rangers and Ranger-like allies. It is unnecessary to include non-free screenshots of various power rangers because a free alternative to the image can exist in the form of photographs of costumes. Free alternatives were already found for images of various power rangers. I really have absolutely no interest in Power rangers and will not respond to any more comments on the subject. Ryan Vesey Review me! 17:52, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

First of all, none of the images you tagged as replaceable are in fact replaceable due to the fact that they are TV screenshots. And second, we cannot use an image that explicitly depicts characters that were never in Power Rangers to represent the characters in Power Rangers. And third, the photograph of the Gorengers is debateably not free because it was a photograph taken of a defunct museum's exhibition.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 17:53, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

First, the museum does not have a copyright on the exhibit and the image was released into public domain by the photographer. Second, how should I know the image isn't a power ranger, it was shown to me by User:SchuminWeb and it looks like a power ranger to me. Third, I really don't care about power rangers so take this to Talk:Other Rangers and Ranger-like allies. Ryan Vesey Review me! 17:59, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Allen Morris playing tennis at Wimbledon.jpeg

Thanks for uploading File:Allen Morris playing tennis at Wimbledon.jpeg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mosmof (talk) 01:02, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Hey there, I wish I am wrong but I just wanna share you a friendly suggestion as I was seeing your name below mine at WikiProject Wikify August drive page. I think the articles marked with { { Wikify } } counts more. You can find them here randomly. — Rammaumtalkstalk 23:45, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

The articles in the category Category:All articles that need to be wikified include all of the articles with dead end tags as well. I am currently trying to clear a bunch of small pages to reduce as much of the backlog as I can. Much of the time I don't take credit for the article at all. If I do, the section I have marked with  Done instead of  Completed are only counted as half of an article. Thanks though Ryan Vesey Review me! 00:26, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

WP:RFA2011

Hi Ryan. I've noticed you have become extremely active recently in many areas of policy making. The idea behind the collaboration of Wikipedia project members, especially at WP:RFA2011, is to make positive proposals. They do not generally offer reasons and opportunities to oppose their own stated aims - the broader community will do enough of that when proposals are made at central RfA. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 23:04, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Comments are welcome, but If you wish to get involve in policy matters at Wikipedia, please AGF and refrain form making personal attacks, and off topic statements. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:08, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
I am sorry that I did not see the note you provided here earlier, but I completely disagree. It is entirely possible that a member of the project could oppose a minimum requirement. I am sorry if you viewed my comment as a personal attack and I may have taken your comment the wrong way, but it appeared to me that you italicized active in response to my earlier comments that I wasn't a biggy on stats. If you were not directing the comment at me, I am sorry for my overreaction, but I still believe the comment is degrading to whichever editors you were referring to as inactive members. Ryan Vesey Review me! 00:21, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
See Wikipedia:Editor review/Ryan Vesey. I trust you'll have the courtesy to remove the personal attack / off topic from the RfA project page yourself. And BTW, we do have unfortunately, several editors who have joined the task force clearly for the wrong reasons and there will shortly be a task force newsletter suggesting that they reconsider their membership. I started WP:RFA2011 and work as hard as anyone at keeping it together and moving forward, and I'm sick and tired of the people who just come along to criticise and tell us we're doing it all wrong - if you read all the project's talk pages from the beginning and get up to date, you'll understand what I mean. Most of the active members of that project are already admins, have been through hell week, and therefore have nothing personal to gain whatsoever by making and pursuing suggestions for improvement in order to make RfA a more pleasant experience for those who follow in our footsteps. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:50, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
I disagree that you truly have nothing to gain. You really have everything to gain. Is there something to be gained by becoming an admin? It depends. The admin status shouldn't be the goal, the goal should be the tools. You gain a way to help the community in a stronger way than you are able to previously. I almost think the admins taking part in RfA reform have more to gain than anybody else. They gain the satisfaction of improving Wikipedia for the better with full knowledge that they did not do so for selfish purposes. Similarly, I did not join so I could have an easier RfA, I joined because I saw the devestation that RfA has brought to some editors. As a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikify, I lost a really good editor to RfA, my goal is for that to not happen again. Ryan Vesey Review me! 01:06, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
I meant that those of us, like me, who are already admins have nothing personal to gain. I'm aware of the loss of one of the driving forces of the Wikikify project. The RfA attempt would probably not have succeeded anyway, but I certainly agree that it failed for all the wrong reasons - the very issues WP:RFA2011 is trying to get changed. There is also a message for you on my tp. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:20, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Scottish surnames

A large number of articles throughout the Wiki site are incorrect with respect of Scottish surnames.

For example one clan's name is rendered Mackenzie. This is incorrect. It is MacKenzie (with a capital 'K')

The convention is that surnames derived from 'son of (personal name)' are capitalised, but surnames derived from 'son of (occupation)' are not.

MacKenzie comes from effectively "Mac Kenzie" (an anglicised Kenneth). So "son of Kenneth". But Macintyre comes from Mac an t-Saoir "son of the carpenter" so it is not capitalised.

However I note that Wiki renders Macintyre with a capital 'i'.

I wonder if other contributors might have a discussion on this too. Montalban (talk) 03:51, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

RfA Reform update

Hi. It's been a little while since the last message on RfA reform, and there's been a fair amount of slow but steady progress. However, there is currently a flurry of activity due to some conversations on Jimbo's talk page.

I think we're very close to putting an idea or two forward before the community and there are at least two newer ones in the pipeline. So if you have a moment:

Thanks for reading and for any comments that you've now made.

CSD log

Hi Ryan, I see that you've created a log for your CSDs, which is great! Can you please tell me how to set one up as well? Thanks Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 08:01, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Sp33dyphil, I'm afraid Ryan is on a wikibreak at the moment, but I think I can answer this one. If you use Twinkle to do your CSD tagging, you can go to Wikipedia:Twinkle/Preferences and scroll down to the CSD area. You'll find "Keep a log in userspace of all CSD nominations", check it and voila. WormTT · (talk) 08:39, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Help - please

Where can I go to settle an editing dispute on an article. I keep adding information, with citations, but another editior, basing his opinion on one single historian keeps removing it.

Does anyone know where this can be settled?

Montalban (talk) 22:03, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Ryan is currently inactive due to his schooling, but could you post a link to the article? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 22:16, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

News and progress from RfA reform 2011

RfA reform: ...and what you can do now.

(You are receiving this message because you are either a task force member, or you have contributed to recent discussions on any of these pages.)

The number of nominations continues to nosedive seriously, according to these monthly figures. We know why this is, and if the trend continues our reserve of active admins will soon be underwater. Wikipedia now needs suitable editors to come forward. This can only be achieved either through changes to the current system, a radical alternative, or by fiat from elsewhere.

A lot of work is constantly being done behind the scenes by the coordinators and task force members, such as monitoring the talk pages, discussing new ideas, organising the project pages, researching statistics and keeping them up to date. You'll also see for example that we have recently made tables to compare how other Wikipedias choose their sysops, and some tools have been developed to more closely examine !voters' habits.

The purpose of WP:RFA2011 is to focus attention on specific issues of our admin selection process and to develop RfC proposals for solutions to improve them. For this, we have organised the project into dedicated sections each with their own discussion pages. It is important to understand that all Wikipedia policy changes take a long time to implement whether or not the discussions appear to be active - getting the proposals right before offering them for discussion by the broader community is crucial to the success of any RfC. Consider keeping the pages and their talk pages on your watchlist; do check out older threads before starting a new one on topics that have been discussed already, and if you start a new thread, please revisit it regularly to follow up on new comments.

The object of WP:RFA2011 is not to make it either easier or harder to become an admin - those criteria are set by those who !vote at each RfA. By providing a unique venue for developing ideas for change independent of the general discussion at WT:RFA, the project has two clearly defined goals:

  1. Improving the environment that surrounds RfA in order to encourage mature, experienced editors of the right calibre to come forward, pass the interview, and dedicate some of their time to admin tasks.
  2. Discouraging, in the nicest way possible of course, those whose RfA will be obvious NOTNOW or SNOW, and to guide them towards the advice pages.

The fastest way is through improvement to the current system. Workspace is however also available within the project pages to suggest and discuss ideas that are not strictly within the remit of this project. Users are invited to make use of these pages where they will offer maximum exposure to the broader community, rather than individual projects in user space.

We already know what's wrong with RfA - let's not clutter the project with perennial chat. RFA2011 is now ready to propose some of the elements of reform, and all the task force needs to do now is to pre-draft those proposals in the project's workspace, agree on the wording, and then offer them for central discussion where the entire Wikipedia community will be more than welcome to express their opinions in order to build consensus.

New tool Check your RfA !voting history! Since the editors' RfA !vote counter at X!-Tools has been down for a long while, we now have a new RfA Vote Counter to replace it. A significant improvement on the former tool, it provides a a complete breakdown of an editor's RfA votes, together with an analysis of the participant's voting pattern.

Are you ready to help? Although the main engine of RFA2011 is its task force, constructive comments from any editors are always welcome on the project's various talk pages. The main reasons why WT:RfA was never successful in getting anything done are that threads on different aspects of RfA are all mixed together, and are then archived where nobody remembers them and where they are hard to find - the same is true of ad hoc threads on the founder's talk page.

The article Thomas Bridges (Anglican missionary) you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Thomas Bridges (Anglican missionary) for things which need to be addressed. – Quadell (talk) 13:55, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

I understand that you're currently on Wikibreak. I'm going to close this as a non-successful nomination at this time. If you later fix these problems, feel free to renominate it. All the best, – Quadell (talk) 13:11, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
