Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

A tag has been placed on APPRO (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Comment: There was originally no title. I formatted the ref. The ref's URL is a dead link, no doubt accurate, but a title is not available unless there is a sutable archive version. (Wayback returns nothing of use. Neither does searching the website itself.)

Emeraude (talk) 20:14, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

@Emeraude, I'm not sure there's much I can do about this. Essentially, you removed the title and caused the error, even if it was appropriate in this case.
@GoingBatty, this is an interesting case, I'd like your thoughts.
Reference before:
<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.warriors.co.uk/news/10215.php|title=Worcester Warriors – Official website of Worcester Warriors Rugby Club|website=warriors.co.uk}}</ref>

Reference after:
<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.warriors.co.uk/news/10215.php |title= |publisher=Worcester Warriors Rugby Club }}{{dead link}}</ref>
— Qwerfjkltalk 11:43, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
That's right, but "Worcester Warriors – Official website of Worcester Warriors Rugby Club" is the description of the website/publisher, not the title of the news article that ought to be on the page. For simplicity, I've replaced it with [http://www.warriors.co.uk/news/10215.php Worcester Warriors Rugby Club] which is far from satisfactory but at least gets over the problem. Emeraude (talk) 12:42, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
@Qwerfjkl and Emeraude: I suggest the following:
<ref>{{cite web|last=Parsons|first=Tom|url=http://www.warriors.co.uk/news/10215.php|title=Warriors sign Scotland prop Ryan Grant|date=25 January 2017|publisher=Worcester Warriors Rugby Club|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170202033855/http://www.warriors.co.uk/news/10215.php|archive-date=2 February 2017}}</ref>
GoingBatty (talk) 13:14, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
@GoingBatty, what would you suggest in cases where an archived version can't be found, meaning that there's no title? — Qwerfjkltalk 13:22, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
@Qwerfjkl: I then agree with Emeraude's replacement solution. GoingBatty (talk) 13:52, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
@GoingBatty, there's no much I can do about the bot notifying for this, unfortunately, without drastically changing how it recognises errors.
Also, no need to ping me on my talk page! — Qwerfjkltalk 13:56, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
The bot should notify an editor who removes a |title= parameter (which will generate a CS1 error). I'm presuming the bot would NOT notify an editor who replaces {{cite web}} with a simple external link as Emeraude suggested (which will not generate a CS1 error). GoingBatty (talk) 14:07, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
@GoingBatty, yes, you're correct (the bot looks at category changes, of course). I didn't notice Emeraude's replacement above; that seems to satisfactorily address the issue. — Qwerfjkltalk 14:11, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

@GoingBatty How'd you do that? I wasted a large part of my life yesterday fruitlesssly trying to get that from Wayback!! That's exactly what I wanted and had no trouble getting results for the other refs which needed an archive. Well done. Emeraude (talk) 17:09, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
@Emeraude Here's what I did:
  1. Copied the URL http://www.warriors.co.uk/news/10215.php
  2. Went to https://web.archive.org/
  3. Pasted the URL http://www.warriors.co.uk/news/10215.php and pressed Enter
  4. Clicked the link for the first archive: "2 February 2017"
  5. Waited a few moments for the archive page to be displayed
  6. Copied the URL https://web.archive.org/web/20170202033855/http://www.warriors.co.uk/news/10215.php
  7. Manually edited the {{cite web}} to paste the archive-url and add the other parameters
If I couldn't find an archived version in https://web.archive.org/ I would check https://archive.today/
Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 17:47, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

You missed my point. That's exactly what I did but got nil return after 3!!! Emeraude (talk) 20:39, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

Is it possible to upload an image into a draft? --Fico Puricelli (talk) 02:11, 19 June 2023 (UTC)

@Fico Puricelli, yes, in much the same way it can be done for articles. You can see Help:Images for some help on that. That being said, I'd recommend you focus on improving the text of an draft, and only add images if it gets accepted. — Qwerfjkltalk 10:10, 19 June 2023 (UTC)

Hey, did you initiate the G7 for this article, or was it the AFC/RC submitter? I ask because I'm preparing to send Jared Knabenbauer to RFD as having no good target and being ambiguous, and getting a bit more insight behind why the ProJared redirect was deleted would be nice. (Also, would Knabenbauer be eligible as a G8, considering it was created as a {{R avoided double redirect}}?) Skarmory (talk • contribs) 05:58, 19 June 2023 (UTC)

@Skarmory, I did, as you can see from my log. As for why I G7ed it, I think it was because there was insufficinet coverage at the target. I doubt it qualifies for G8, it should probably be retargeted instead, or taken to RfD (though I may be wrong). — Qwerfjkltalk 10:15, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
Ah, sort of forgot those existed and I could check other users'. I'll take it to RFD, hopefully someone can find a good target there, otherwise deletion is an option. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 11:29, 19 June 2023 (UTC)

Creator

Is there an easy way of retrieving the creator of a category? Eg if one nominates a single category for cfd using Twinkle, Twinkle gets the first editor somehow and notifies them, but I am not aware of any method to notify all category creators in a bulk nom. — Oculi (talk) 16:01, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

@Oculi, I've written a user script for just this task, which queries the API: User:Qwerfjkl/scripts/massCFD.js. It is currently unfinished (I'm still developing it), but it works well enough. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:23, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
Unfortunately, whilst I can see some code which is sorting contributors by date and plucking out the first one (and also just sending 1 notification to the creator of several pages), I have no idea how I can utilise this. What I would like is a template or magic word which would add the creator to a table like the one at User:Oculi/sandbox9. The page count is supplied by the magic word PAGESINCATEGORY and I would like something similar to add the creator, who could be pinged rather than notified via talk page. Oculi (talk) 16:41, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
@Oculi, do you mean you want to get the page creator using magic words, i.e. not using Javascript? — Qwerfjkltalk 16:50, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
Well, I can get the page count using {{clc}} or by a magic word so I would like a similar method to get the page creator. Eg if I have 100 categories in my table I want the 100 page creators to be listed in a trice. Templates are a mystery to me. If I open a category the creator is there at the top of the page but copy and paste becomes tedious after 3 or 4. Oculi (talk) 19:05, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
@Oculi, AFAIK, there is no way to get the page creaator using wikitext. the creator is there at the top of the page - I think that's because of the XTools gadget. — Qwerfjkltalk 07:26, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
Yes, it is the XTools gadget. Many thanks indeed for your patience. Oculi (talk) 08:59, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Draft:Brenda Victoria Castillo, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion".
