Comment/question: What is wrong with this stupid bot? what are the mistakes!

RodrigoIPacce (talk) 16:38, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

@RodrigoIPacce, you need to add a |title= to those references. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:44, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
If you want to opt out of notifications, you can add
{{bots|optout=cs1-errors}}
to the top of your talk page. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:45, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
For example, with this edit, you should have used:
He has been a free agent since mid 2022 playing last for [[Eastern Company SC|Eastern Company FC]].<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://www.365scores.com/football/player/ahmed-magdi-46964 |title= Some title |access-date=2023-04-28 |website=www.365scores.com}}</ref> — Qwerfjkltalk 16:49, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
What is wrong? I cited an error! It was wrong, I corrected it and added my source! Done! RodrigoIPacce (talk) 16:59, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
@RodrigoIPacce, the problem, as I have highlighted, is that you have not added a title. — Qwerfjkltalk 17:00, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
Why is that necessary? RodrigoIPacce (talk) 17:04, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
It's the same topic RodrigoIPacce (talk) 17:04, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
@RodrigoIPacce, it is helpful because it gives readers an idea of what the URL links to, rather than the ugly URL, as well as helping combat link rot. See WP:Bare URLs. — Qwerfjkltalk 17:12, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
I'm sorry for calling you a stupid bot... I feel stupid. RodrigoIPacce (talk) 17:20, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

Comment/question: This wasn't a "false positive" per se. This was an AWB (AutoWikiBrowser) edit, the bulk of which didn't have anything to do with referencing. The part that Qwerfjkl picked up (the referencing error) was actually an automated genfix (general fix) from AWB. It was inserting a missing closing tag for the cite template ("}}"). So Qwerfjkl probably didn't pick this missing title previously because the cite template wasn't actually valid, whereas after my edit the genfix made it a complete cite. So that's the background. Here's my comment: I'm not sure if it's worth pursuing, but since AWB is applying a genfix in these kinds of instances, it might be worth pointing out to the AWB folks to include screening for bare URLs or missing titles in references in that kind of situation. Just throwing that out as an idea. If it's not worth pursuing, just disregard.

ButlerBlog (talk) 14:07, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

@Butlerblog, I'd take this as a GIGO situation. It may not be worth warning for, but if you want to pursue it, feel free to start a discussion at WT:AWB.
I could set the bot to ignore edits made with AWB, though as AWB is semi-automated it's probably best not to. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:57, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Large nomination

Wikipedia talk:Categories for discussion pointed me here for large CfD nominations. I have started preparing a nomination to move all Category:Olympic alpine skiers of Albania to Category:Olympic alpine skiers for Albania for sports×countries following their parents' name format Category:Olympic competitors for Albania. Would you/the bot mentioned be able to tag the categories? What format of input is preferred? Kaffet i halsen (talk) 16:50, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

@Kaffet i halsen, sure, I'll tag the categories some time tomorrow. Please could you nominate just one of the categories manually (or with Twinkle preferably), it makes it easier when tagging the categories. — Qwerfjkltalk 21:25, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
I have now nominated the categories on Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 May 14#Olympic sportspeople of Foo and tagged the first entry only (Category:Olympic alpine skiers of Albania‎). All are rename except 10th last line, Archer/Ireland which is a merge.
Thanks, Kaffet i halsen (talk) 11:47, 14 May 2023 (UTC)

journal citation with PubMed ID

The entire journal citation can be generated from the PubMed ID alone, or at least all except a page number if specified. 109.87.204.96 (talk) 19:27, 25 May 2023 (UTC)

109.87.204.96, my bot is purely for notifying users of reference errors. Have you looked at User:Citation bot? If it doesn't generate citations from these, then you could suggest that to the bot operator. — Qwerfjkltalk 19:39, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
Really, it should be a function of the template itself: cite journal |pubmed=#######
Nothing more is necessary. 109.87.204.96 (talk) 20:10, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
109.87.204.96, the template cannot do anything with the information though. It can't fetch data. — Qwerfjkltalk 09:16, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
Is that why AManWithNoPlan wrote “user has no idea what they are talking about”?
The question is whether a bot can fetch the data to populate the template based on the PubMed ID alone.
I don’t understand why it can’t.
To me it makes more sense to populate the template fields with the correct values rather than generating errors about missing fields. 109.87.204.96 (talk) 14:22, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
"Really, it should be a function of the template itself: cite journal |pubmed=#######" That idea existed in the past as cite pmid, and it turned out to be an absolutely terrible idea. AManWithNoPlan (talk) 16:24, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

Comment/question: The comment was that information about reference to a periodical was missing information. However, both references I entered to support the editing I did were to websites, not to periodicals.

Ljdowning (talk) 12:44, 22 May 2023 (UTC)ljdowning

@Ljdowning: This reference uses {{cite journal}} which requires |journal=. If you are not citing an academic or scholarly journal, do not use {{cite journal}}. If you cannot see the error message, see Help:CS1 errors § Controlling error message display.
Trappist the monk (talk) 13:07, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
Hi, sorry to sound dim-witted, but I use the visual editor, not the source, editor, and I don't understand your comment. Your information about how to see the error seem to be aimed at someone who does source editing, which not everyone does.
Which reference are you talking about? And how could the reference use "cite journal" if the reference information I entered in the cite form that one uses in visual editing was a website URL, not a journal article? If you actually follow the links in the two references I added to this page, you'll see that they are not journal articles.
I do a LOT of Wiki editing using the visual editing mode, and I have NEVER gotten a comment like this, so, again, I am totally confused. Ljdowning (talk) 13:13, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
@Ljdowning, with this edit, you added:
A Menominee dictionary project,<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Macaulay |first=Monica |last2=Milligan |first2=Marianne |title=A Menominee-English/English-Menominee Dictionary |url=https://grantome.com/grant/NSF/BCS-0235873 |language=en}}</ref> led by [[Monica Macaulay]], has resulted in the publication of modern dictionaries of the language in support of revitalization efforts.<ref>{{Cite web |title=History: Menominee |url=https://www.teachlangwisconsin.com/menominee |access-date=2023-05-21 |website=Multilingualism and Education in Wisconsin |language=en-US}}</ref>

This uses {{cite journal}}; I assume you just pasted the link in and let Citoid fill out the details.
The bot task for these notifications is fairly new, so you may not have seen them before. — Qwerfjkltalk 13:26, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
I have no clue about citoid... I did just paste in a URL, which is to a webpage, grantstome, which obviously is not a journal. It's a webpage that compiles information about funded grants, in this case to a project funding Menominee dictionaries. So Citoid seems to have a bug, that it fills in info that isn't relevant for a particular reference? The same issue has come up for an edit I made to Doris Payne's webpage, where a reference to a website is flagged as needing journal information? Any suggestions about how to avoid such errors on my side? Or will Wikipedia aim to fix the overactive functions of Citoid?
I care a lot about proper referencing, and I from time to time get helpful suggestions about improving references. It's frustrating to get unhelpful error messages - unhelpful since I don't see how to correct the issue. Ljdowning (talk) 13:35, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
@Ljdowning, you should see something like this after entering in the URL and saving the reference:

You can then click "edit", "manual", and then the correct reference type (in this case "website") and fill out the necessary parameters if possible. — Qwerfjkltalk 14:13, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
The "bug" in Citoid is mostly because it is tricky to get accurate metadata from webpages, and many webpages mangle their HTML. — Qwerfjkltalk 14:14, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
Thanks again for this tip about how Wikipedia can incorrectly interpret website references as journal articles. I have now found and fixed the two problematic references that you pointed out to me (one in Doris L. Payne's Wikipedia entry, the other in the entry for the Menominee language). I was glad to learn something new! Ljdowning (talk) 18:37, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
(edit conflict)
Visual editor and Citoid (the thing that automates citation creation) are far, far, from perfect. For this reason, I do not use it. I gave you a link to the reference that has the error message. Here's a better link: Special:Permalink/1156209199#cite note-10.
The how-to-see-the-error-messages instructions have nothing to do with which editor you use. To enable error message display, you will have to use the source editor to edit User:Ljdowning/common.css. Once you have done that, you can go back to Menominee language § References and look at reference 10. You should see the error message – it looks like this: {{cite journal}}: Cite journal requires |journal= (help).
If ve does not allow you to specify which citation template to use, for me that is just more confirmation that ve is not yet ready for prime time. If you try to recreate that same reference, will ve allow you to change from {{cite journal}} (which it apparently prefers) to {{cite web}} while you are creating the citation? Does it not give you the opportunity to review what citoid suggests?
Trappist the monk (talk) 13:40, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
@Trappist the monk, you can test VE with ?veaction=edit, which is helpful in cases like these to see what VE can do.
I think there was a RfC about enabling VE by default sometime at VPR. — Qwerfjkltalk 14:16, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for that; I'll probably soon forget about it. I tried it with unsatisfying results. The reference enumerated as 10 in the reference list was 8 in the article. Why? Because there are two references in the infobox that ve ignores? Editing the existing template to change the citation type blanks all of the existing parameter data. Really unhelpful. Not clear at all how to get the {{cite web}} form to auto-populate parameter values from a url; that functionality should be obvious (its obvious and works in RefToolbar so should be just as obvious in ve's form). So, this brief experiment simply confirms for me that ve is far, far from ready for prime time. Done with my rant for now.
Trappist the monk (talk) 14:48, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
@Qwerfjkl: Why did you choose Category:CS1 errors: missing periodical as one of the categories that the bot monitors? The error messages that are associated with this category are hidden (for reasons of politics) so I suspect that you will get more discussions like this one.
Trappist the monk (talk) 13:51, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
@Trappist the monk, I started it because of Wikipedia:Bot requests#Bot to notify users when they add CS1 errors, and I think I chose the categories from Help:CS1 errors#Most common errors.
Not sure why you pinged me on my talk page. — Qwerfjkltalk 14:00, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
This looks super helpful. Thanks for providing all these details, telling me what to look for to find the error messages on the relevant Wiki entries and then suggesting how to correct them. I will have a closer look later today (or within the coming days, if today turns out busy), optimistic that I can solve this problem. I really appreciate this! Ljdowning (talk) 14:20, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
Hi Qwerfjkl and Trappist the monk, Ljdowning is a cofacilitator for a number of edit-a-thons I help manage, and she brought this thread to my attention, so I hope you don't mind me chiming in. Laura, you may want to check out the user guide in addition to the manual on citation errors. While Qwerfjkl and Trappist are mentioning template parameters using the "source" style, for the most part the fields in the visual editor are named similarly, so things like |journal= would correspond to the "Journal" field when using the visual editor to edit citations. The issue you seem to be discussing is that the automated citation maker is not always accurate. Qwerfjkl notes that Citoid (the software component that manages our citations) tries to read the page you're citing and try to intuit what citation template to use and what fields to populate, but sometimes this doesn't work because of how the other website is structured. For whatever reason, Citoid thought the URL you used was to a journal article and used that template when it shouldn't have. In the visual editor, you can try switching to the "Manual" tab, and it will show you what template it's using at the top. You can also look and fix whatever fields might be messed up. After-the-fact, you can also try editing the citation as Qwerfjkl shows in the image above. If you click on the reference while editing, you'll see in the top left of the pop-up the kind of template it's using (in the case above, "Journal"). You can edit this, and in the bottom left you'll see a "Change reference type"; choose "manual" on the dialog box that pops up, and choose a more appropriate type (website, probably). Hope this helps! Wug·a·po·des 17:52, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
@GoingBatty, what do you think about this? It appears the missing periodical error is hidden by default, which can confuse editors. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:58, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
@Qwerfjkl: I thought the red errors were visible and the green maintenance messages were hidden, but I was incorrect. I've had my css modified for so long that I forgot which ones were hidden and which weren't. I think we should not notify users about hidden messages. Sorry for causing this issue. Just a friendly heads-up in case you weren't already aware, since it's installed on your common.js: Careless use of ReferenceExpander has caused serious problems. It's currently at MFD, and a large cleanup project is underway to repair the citations damaged by the script. Comment/question: Probably nothing you can do about this, but I'll explain how it happened anyways: User was rapidly vandalising the page and multiple times as I was about to revert it they added another one, in the end I still ended up reverting with one of their edits in between - and that was enough for there to not be any undo tag apparently (not even manual revert).

Personally I haven't had this happen many times with me, even though it's not super uncommon for there to be multiple users vandalising a page, but having multiple vandals or one rapid vandal editing different parts of a page rapidly is pretty rare.

2804:F14:80B6:3101:C9EF:C3EF:8F5D:C2B4, yes, not much I can do about this. The bot is already set to ignore undos, reverts, and rollbacks; I've just updated it to also skip reverted edits. (I've just made a simple change, and because the bot looks at a feed of edits, it may come across the edit before it's been reverted, and so still notify even if the edit is reverted.) — Qwerfjkltalk 09:17, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
