WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

[edit]

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's United States ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Washington, D.C. Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Canada Reid, iain james (submissions), tiger from Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Minas Gerais Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Nepal Czar (submissions) and Indiana Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Regarding this edit, Noam Friedlander's biography actually doesn't say anything about Katy Hudson singles..... at least not on the pages given in the citation. I completely understand where you're coming from, though. It does however confirm a March 6, 2001 release of the album. What sources (not counting KatyHudson.ca, as it is a fansite) talk about singles from the album? XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 15:52, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On another note, I personally have no problems with using Amazon.com for release date but since the main Katy Perry article is itself under GA review right now, though I'm not sure if the reviewer would find it reliable. XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 15:56, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
One of the biographies utilized in the article support the information given on the album's singles. I don't remember which one now, but one of them does. And if you have your doubts on that, just ask Peter... prism 16:08, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'll also look into other biographies, but the only one I can think of off hand is the one by a KatyCat named Tara Reimer (author of KatyHudson.ca). I've talked with Tara personally, and am not doubting her credibility as a writer, but the fact that it is a fan-made site makes it unacceptable for WP:RS. I only want the best possible sources for Ms. Hudson's main article as it goes through GAN. My goal is to have it as "Today's Featured Article" on October 25th this year for her 30th birthday. This means I would have to get it to FA status at least a month ahead of that day. If any sources are deemed unusable during GAN, then they certainly wouldn't be accepted during FAC. I'll ask Peter what he thinks when he addresses the "Katy Hudson and The Matrix" section of the article on using Amazon.com. XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 16:30, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I already knew your plan, which would actually be a lovely tribute to her. I completely understand what you are saying, no problem. prism 17:02, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for your GA review of "Black Widow (song)". My first and hopefully not my last GA!—CoolMarc 16:21, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey bud,

Just wanted to say thanks for referring Shane to WP:RSN. Take caution with him: he doesn't mean harm, but can come off as disruptive during reviews. Take a look at the review for Lady Gaga's Do What U Want for an example. As shown, when I was working with IndianBio to get it up to GA, his interjection was rather uncalled for. My guess is that he's doing this since IndianBio and I found many flaws in the Justin Bieber article (which reviewer initially overlooked) during its GAN and suggested that the reviewer fail the nomination. At the time, references were a disaster, prose needed lots of work, and article was unstable. Because if this, the Biebs failed miserably for GA. It didn't surprise me that Peter got pissed with Shane's interjection for Katy's nomination. Peter also was the reviewer for "Do What U Want".

XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 17:39, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@XXSNUGGUMSXX: I understand what you're trying to say. When I started editing on Wikipedia (circa 2008), I was arrogant as well and my edits were awful, just fancruft-filled. I've seen Shane's edits before this GAR and he does come off as disruptive, however he needs to control himself. His activity on the Katy review indicates toward a "If I can't have it no one else can"-ish attitude (and he's clutching at straws right now, with HitFix and Hollywood Reporter). Someone needs to tell him this; judging on my own experience, it won't be long before some admin blocks him.
P.S.: Hope you don't mind the minor copyediting I'm giving to the article. I won't change a lot of stuff right now because we don't need stability issues for the GAR. And I hope I can be a part of the future FAC, even if I'm not I'll try to help with anything needed (an FA for our article will be a valuable addition for Katy's WP). prism 18:28, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah your changes weren't a big issue. I'm not sure how often you've contributed to her main article, but I still do hope to get it to FA in time for her birthday to have it as "Today's Featured Article" for her 30th birthday. As the top contributor, I'll definitely let you, Giacobbe, WikiRedactor, and other KatyCats know when I've submitted it to FAC. In regards to sources, Hollywood Reporter is by all means a viable source, HitFix might not be FA-worthy but is certainly not a bad source. As far as fancruft, IndianBio and I could rave all day about Reece Leonard on Lady Gaga articles (particularly those from Artpop), and Shane's FAC for Miley Cyrus faced strong opposition and a quick withdrawal. Rather inappropriate nomination to begin with as he wasn't even among the top contributors. Even though I helped Lady Lotus fix up refs for Miley during GAN, I'm thinking about opening GAR on that due to prose and reference issues (which have deteriorated since passing for GA). He's certainly not as disruptive as user SergiSmiler (notably in Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears articles), but is still at a worrisome level. As for Ms. Hudson, I've frankly worked my ass off on her article more than any other article on Wikipedia, and have put as much blood, sweat, and tears into it ensuring top quality as Calvin did for Rihanna's "S&M" (I see it failed two GAN's and nine FAC's before becoming FA). XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 19:05, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Since I was pinged here, I just want to say that whatever help you need getting Miley back to GA standards, I'll do whatever I can. While Shane means well, his editing still needs to seriously improve. He needs to maybe take it easy on the mass editing. I'll check the references again. Let me know what I can do! LADY LOTUSTALK 19:15, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, "S&M" is a perfect example of dedication. I'm also opening my first FAC by the end of this month (max.), for Trouble. I'm currently working on it. prism 19:40, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Trouble

[edit]

Hello, sorry for the late reply, I've been travelling recently so I've not been as active as I hoped. You've delivered a strong article which definitely has no major issues and which I believe is ready for FAC. My only possible reservation is that the sections are quite short, but I know this is because you are working with limited sources. One thing the reviewers of my 4 FAC encouraged me to do was to get the most out of the available sources as there is often a lot in them than you think. Although I am very aware of how difficult that is with this article, I would advise you to just go through the sources and see if the article is lacking anything, after which I should be able to assist a close prose review. Best, —JennKR | 00:00, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Music charts for Portugal

[edit]

So, if acharts.us for you english users is not reliable, what source is reliable if I want to put a reference on the 38th position of Paramore's Aint't It Fun on the Portuguese single chart? --Zack Tartufo (talk) 21:11, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Zack Tartufo: I'm not an English user, I'm actually Portuguese. But the use of acharts.us is discouraged on WP:BADCHARTS due to unknown methodology, and there's no Portuguese Singles Chart according to Associação Fonográfica Portuguesa. The only thing similar is the Portuguese Digital Songs (based on iTunes sales), listed by Billboard magazine, and—I've checked—"Ain't It Fun" didn't enter that chart. Thank you, though. — prism 22:00, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I said "English users" because we are in the English Wikipedia and I'm from the Italian Wikipedia, where aCharts.us is considered reliable. It's a pity that some charts are ignored here, it seems I have to resign myself to that. --Zack Tartufo (talk) 12:20, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Zack Tartufo: aCharts shouldn't be considered reliable anywhere. They don't give any indication that their information is obtained from official music charts and they also invent some charts (Portuguese Singles Chart does not exist). — prism 13:14, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the charts I see in aCharts and in the official music charts are always the same, apart the Portuguese and the Bulgarian ones (that seem to don't exist). --Zack Tartufo (talk) 14:45, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Paramore's "Ain't It Fun" certification

[edit]

I'm not sure how else I could prove their platinum certification for "Ain't It Fun", RIAA's paramore certification database is outdated with the most recent certification having been awarded in 2011. The official band twitters have tweeted about it: https://twitter.com/paramore/status/479294931874623489 // https://twitter.com/yelyahwilliams/status/480549073909739520 AND here they are receiving the plaques: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bquz0RGCIAEhv_l.jpg... Thanks for making sure the page isn't filled with false information but sometimes news/new information goes unnoticed and may not present itself in an 'official' form. Ramres1 (talk) 18:57, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for trying to improve the page, however we can't have that information on the article until it's been posted by a reliable source (Twitter should be avoided) and right now there aren't any (including RIAA). — prism 15:06, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, hoping the following is a reliable source. ABC News recently did a piece in where they stated 'Ain't It Fun' has become platinum and even have footage from a celebration the band had in regards to that. In addition, the plaques from RIAA are also featured wherein the 'Ain't It Fun' single art in displayed which looks the same as the single art that has been posted before on the page but time and time again, removed. This is all within the first two minutes of the video. Again, I appreciate you cleaning up the page, thanks for your work! After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C, Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.

The round saw this year's first featured portal, with Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to Florida 12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from Bartošovice v Orlických horách Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions).

The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. Good luck! Ashley Tisdale

[edit]

Hey Prism, it's been a while! Hope you're doing great! I'm here to ask you a favor - I believe I'm ready to nominate the article Ashley Tisdale for FA again. But before I do that, I'd really appreciate if you could a time and take a look at the article. I've requested for a peer review already so maybe you could put your inputs in there. I've been working on this article for years and years, and my main goal on Wikipedia is to get it promoted to FA! Thanks in advance and let me know if you ever need any help with an article :) decodet. (talk) 12:37, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Decodet! You know what, I thought about you yesterday, because I'm also planning on opening an FAC for Trouble (Natalia Kills album) (which I'm restructuring for the fifth time now) during this month. I'll leave some comments later. By the way, since you like Paramore, I thought you'd be interested in knowing I got "Ain't It Fun" to GA! pedro | talk 12:49, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Let me know when you have it nominated so I'll give it a look! Yes, I saw that! Thanks for that. Paramore's articles are usually bad so it's nice to someone trying to make them better :) decodet. (talk) 14:20, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Merge discussion

[edit]

Hi Prism. A few days back, I had proposed that Body Language Live be merged into Money Can't Buy. Unfortunately, it is a rather obscure article and its talk page is rarely visited. I think it will never reach consensus at this rate. To add to that, I cannot wait for 30 days to make a bold merge since I've got the new article ready in my sandbox. I'm not aiming to canvas at all, but I hope you can review the proposal and give your opinion. Thanks! --WonderBoy1998 (talk) 15:35, 4 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Today the Sun's on Us, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Richard Jones. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Wikicup semifinalists interview request

[edit]

As you may know, I write for the Signpost, basically Wikipedia's newsletter. I'd like to do a feature on the semifinalists, would you be willing to provide, say, 250 to 500 words saying: (1.) Why did you join the Wikicup? (2.) What you you hope to get out of it? and (3.) Which of your contributions to the Wikicup are your favourites?

Not quite sure how I'll order them - I'll probably make the ed17 decide, as, you know, Conflict of Interest: I am a semifinalist. I'd imagine point order or alphabetical or the like.

Can you please reply at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2014-07-30/Wikicup#Prism? Thanks! Adam Cuerden (talk) 00:24, 19 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Destiny Fulfilled

[edit]

LOL. I had no idea you were a Destiny's Child fan. I'm doing the same thing the whole summer. I started editing the articles about Destiny Fulfilled and can't stop listenning to the songs. It is actually the first album I'm listenning to by DC. I've been only a Beyonce fan by now. And your name actually made me listen to Prism. I swear. And I love that album. My love is love (talk) 20:01, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

My love is love, Actually, I'm not a fan of DC. I'm a Beyoncé fan (just like you) and I own all of her live/studio albums, except I Am... Sasha Fierce and the self-titled LP. Don't know why, actually the latter is one of my favorite albums ever. I don't even know why I own the Destiny Fulfilled CD. It's probably just one of the many CDs I regretted buying (I found an Emily Osment CD in my shelf some months ago)... And that's great! While Prism isn't half of what I expected—I'm not sure if you had heard her interviews, where she said that she would do a dark album, more mature, etc—it's a good evolution from Teenage Dream, I suppose. What do you think of Beyoncé? pedro | talk 20:09, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Lol. But you should give it a try if you haven't listened to it completely. In my country you can rarely find physical copies of CDs to buy so I don't have the opportunity to do so. I would give everything just to buy a physical copy of at least one album/DVD. However, I have all of her albums on my phone. Lol (YouTube). I especially LOVE the live albums. And I think Prism is great but definitely far more different from what she described it. My favorites are "Birthday", "Unconditionally", "Legendary Lovers" and "Walking on Air". And I've been listening to at least one song from Beyoncé from day 1 it was released. It's definitely my favorite album so far. At first, I hated some of the songs like "Yonce", "Partition", "Flawless" but after listening 2 or 3 times they became my all-time favorites. Plus the music videos really make the songs better. The first day I watched the video for "Pretty Hurts" 7 times. I wonder if a deluxe edition or some extra songs will be released in near future though. And which are your favorite songs from Beyoncé? My love is love (talk) 21:01, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My love is love Oh. Where do you live? You could always try ordering from Amazon, which is where I buy a lot of my physical albums. I live in Portugal, but those are still a bit expensive. And, I totally agree with you! To quote Ms. Bey herself, it's truly an immersive experience to watch the album and just... feel her creativity, see her distance herself from other popstars. Commercially, it's slowing down, and she doesn't give a flying fuck about her singles ("XO" and "Pretty Hurts" bombed). I'm still satisfied, though. My favorite songs are "Haunted", "Partition", "Drunk in Love", "XO", "Jealous", "Flawless", "Pretty Hurts"... the whole album basically. Video-wise, the videos for "Ghost", "Haunted", "Partition" and "Flawless". pedro | talk 21:15, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I live in Macedonia and the currency is Macedonian denar which is 0.016 euros so many of them are really expensive for me. The album is slowing down but its sales worldwide must stand at 4.5 million by now (By January it had 3m sold) which is still quite a lot. I think that the underperformance of the singles was mostly due to lack of promotion. I'm sure that if she sings "Pretty Hurts" at the VMAs or some other show it will be a hit. Wow, we share many of our favorite songs and videos. My love is love (talk) 21:38, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My love is love To be honest I think she just doesn't care. And that's good somehow... She already made a big statement and she produced a worldwide phenomenon. It doesn't get much better than that, so we should be happy. And yeah! Do you want to work on a Beyoncé/DC article together? pedro | talk 22:00, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I totally agree. I'm currently working on "Cater 2 U" and after I finish with that one we can work together on "Bills, Bills, Bills", "Say My Name", "Haunted" or whatever you want. My love is love (talk) 22:18, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2014 August newsletter

[edit]

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
  2. Scotland Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
  3. Nepal Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
  4. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
  5. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
  6. Florida 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
  7. Colorado Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
  8. Canada Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Herm Matty.007 (submissions), Ohio ThaddeusB (submissions), United States WikiRedactor (submissions), Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), Portugal Prism (submissions) and Bartošovice v Orlických horách Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.

There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! WikiCup 2014: The results

[edit]

The 2014 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), who flew the flag of the Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Scotland Casliber (submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.

A full list of our prize-winners follows:

Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have participated this year. We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...

[edit]

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

  • We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
  • In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
  • The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

Return?

[edit]

Not sure if you still plan on returning this month. Either way, once you read this, know that you've been missed. Wish you all the best. Cheers, Snuggums (talk / edits) 18:16, 13 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

OK I saw you had some edits this past January but nothing since. Did you disappear? Snuggums (talk / edits) 06:20, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry @SNUGGUMS:, I meant to reply earlier. I'm currently trying to return but I've been quite busy with school. Thank you for remembering me, haha. pedro | talk 10:43, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Of course a bro remembers another bro :). School is a bitch, though. Snuggums (talk / edits) 10:47, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, I agree. Did you watch the Super Bowl? pedro | talk 10:53, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I did! I am also the creator of its halftime show article, and enjoyed watching the show very much :). How about you? Snuggums (talk / edits) 16:05, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@SNUGGUMS: I loved it! It really made me relive the Teenage Dream era. pedro | talk 16:08, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Our California Gurl knows just how to do things like that :3. However, my favorite performance of hers has to be when I saw her at Prismatic World Tour this past August, and she waved in my direction while on the big balloons performing "Birthday" :D! I fanboyed over that, and couldn't stop smiling the next morning. It was even better than when I saw first her live during California Dreams Tour in November 2011, which I adored. Snuggums (talk / edits) 16:18, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@SNUGGUMS: Oh my god! I have never seen her live, and I won't see her this year either as the Prismatic World Tour isn't coming to Portugal. I would have died if she did that to me! :D pedro | talk 16:49, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If you ever do go, it's well worth the time! Some of my KatyCat friends have met her in person, and hopefully I can do so myself one day :3. Snuggums (talk / edits) 17:49, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@SNUGGUMS: I sure hope so! Do you mind if I ask... are you on any pop forum? pedro | talk 18:17, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No, I am not a member of any forum. Snuggums (talk / edits) 18:42, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Would you care to make a comment in the above nomination? Thanks in advance. :) —Indian:BIO [ ChitChat ] 09:17, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter

[edit]

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! One of several of Godot13's quality submissions during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Australia Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by India The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Belarus Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! Hey bro. It's been a while since we spoke. Since you haven't been very active in recent months, I added your name to the linked page above. Please remember to remove your name from the list if you ever come back. Not sure if school and such have still been keeping you tied up, but I do hope you become more active again. The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Scotland Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Philadelphia Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
  2. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
  3. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
  4. Somerset Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
  5. Washington, D.C. West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
  6. Somerset Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
  7. United States Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
  8. England Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

WikiCup 2015: The results

[edit]

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to United States Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

A full list of our award winners are:

We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2016 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

[edit]

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
