ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:11, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

That hook you suggested worked great in the quirky! For both articles, too. Valereee (talk) 14:45, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

Excellent. Would make a good pub quiz question. I already can't remember which one is which and I just looked at them. I was wondering whether John Harrison Stonehouse should be at either the top or the bottom of its set, probably the bottom. What do you think? Philafrenzy (talk) 15:02, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
Hm. I like the image, myself, and when I promote I try to choose examples that don't get used often, and a book cover, especially such a beautiful one, certainly qualifies. But of course we can't use them all.
I do think the "cursed" part is probably good enough for a quirky. You could probably bring that up as a request/suggestion at talk? I do try to limit asking for specific placement unless as nom or reviewer I feel pretty strongly about a hook's placement (in which case I try to remember to request it in the nom as a comment-to-promoter) but as long as you worded it as not-a-criticism-of-the-promoter, you could totally at least ask for reconsideration. Valereee (talk) 16:49, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, I have asked. Philafrenzy (talk) 18:44, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

The fact was ... that bookseller John Harrison Stonehouse commissioned the "cursed" edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam that was lost when the RMS Titanic sank in 1912? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/John Harrison Stonehouse. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, John Harrison Stonehouse), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Listed buildings in Gloucester

Hello Phil, and compliments of the season. I've been adding a few images to Grade I listed buildings in Gloucester and Grade II* listed buildings in Gloucester, many of them yours for which many thanks. We are now short of only one, a Boundary Wall at Blackfriars, Gloucester. It looks like this, [1]. You don't happen to have a shot of it in your collection? I've gone through Commons and Geograph and haven't been able to find it, though it's quite possible I've missed one. If you have, and were able to upload, it would be much appreciated. Best regards. KJP1 (talk) 11:40, 25 December 2022 (UTC)

Merry Christmas to you. Not from the inside but the outside is this one I think, on the edge of Ladybellegate Street? Philafrenzy (talk) 11:47, 25 December 2022 (UTC)
The listing says brick repairs which appear to have been solely to the inside. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:58, 25 December 2022 (UTC)
Phil - many thanks - I should have said I didn't need it today! I actually think it is a brick wall, inside and out, and have found a, not very good, one on Geograph, [2]. Looking at the HE map, it certainly runs along Ladybellegate Street, [3]. If you find you have any better, a replacement would be great. All the best. KJP1 (talk) 12:06, 25 December 2022 (UTC)
That's the wall adjacent to the carpark on the corner with Longsmith Street. Mine is definitely the listed one, stone on the outside and brick inside. You can see Blackfriars over it! You must have had too much Christmas Sherry. Philafrenzy (talk) 12:20, 25 December 2022 (UTC)
Not so much as a Babycham, I'm afraid! But you're right - when you look at it on Google Earth streetview, you can see the corner archway and the stone outer/brick inner very clearly. I'm swapped the wrong one out. Thanks for your help - that's two more Grade I/II* articles with full sets of images. KJP1 (talk) 12:36, 25 December 2022 (UTC)
Great work, treat yourself to an extra mince pie. Philafrenzy (talk) 15:52, 25 December 2022 (UTC)

New revised hook for Charles

I have proposed yet another hook for Charles Wolley-Dod, here.

I really wanted that last hook you wrote to work out...but my thinking now is that it's never worth stating a physical distance in a DYK hook, unless it's absolutely so critical to the story that all the baggage of extra words (units of measurement, conversions, qualifying words) and extra arguments (with map geeks, armchair detectives, conspiracy theorists, measuring-tape lovers, conversion calculators, lawyers, nearly all of which I'm sure I've been at some point in my life before) is worth it. And that we were likely to keep having the same argument a few more times.

Anyway thank you so much for all your help, and apologies for not resolving this as efficiently as I could have, also on behalf of everyone who got a bit overexcited about the mystery. Cielquiparle (talk) 11:30, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

A thank you to you both from me too. He may have just gone for the ride and adventure. Whispyhistory (talk) 11:51, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Carroll Group, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". The article John Garbutt (alderman) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

He was one of 25 aldermen in a municipality with a population of 8,583. At his last election, he won 86 votes which equated to 50% of votes cast.
