Archaeology question
[edit]Hi -- I saw your post at the ENB requesting the course instructor right, and I gather from that that you're teaching an archaeology class. I've recently been working on the radiocarbon dating article, and would like to have someone with a professional understanding of the topic take a look at it. Would you, or perhaps one of your students, have a moment to take a look at the article? I would like any feedback that you have time for. Thanks. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 18:20, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
@Mike Christie: Sure thing, let me take a look in the next few days and I'll see what I can do. If I have any suggestions I'll add them to the Talk page for the radiocarbon article. Ninafundisha (talk) 19:08, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks! Much appreciated. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 19:26, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
I want to say thank you about the Jenini article. I apologize for creating a mess; it was an accident. I will be careful for now on.Lady Miyazawa (talk) 12:55, 12 October 2014 (UTC)Lady Miyazawa
@Lady Miyazawa: It's okay! I totally expected these kinds of hiccups. I think the trick is to write a bit more before creating the page, but that's something I didn't really go over in class. We can talk about it more on Tuesday! Ninafundisha (talk) 16:52, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
I got your message about rewording slaves with enslaved people. I fixed it when I put the paragraphs on the main or user page. I will write more on the article with more sources since I used a word document and also footnotes to keep track. Lady Miyazawa (talk) 23:51, 26 October 2014 (UTC)Lady Miyazawa
- @Lady Miyazawa: Sounds good; I have made some edits to the opening sentence and the archaeology sentence. Looks good so far - you will eventually want to explain why the archaeological results are important, I think. Ninafundisha (talk) 02:33, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
Remind me to ask you a probably dumb and obvious question about citing sources tomorrow either before or after class if I don't approach you. RekishinoJinrui (talk) 07:16, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
I got the Jenini article up. You can take a look. Lady Miyazawa (talk) 01:51, 14 November 2014 (UTC)Lady Miyazawa
Public resources related to early African History
[edit]Hi Ninafundisha! I saw that you've been teaching a course related to African archeology and I wanted to ask if you knew about any public resources where other editors can find out about the early histories of different African countries. For example, a few months ago I was working on the history section for the page on Central African Republic and there were very few public sources of information related to interesting topics like the Bouar Megaliths, Meroë and Bantu trade routes and the Neolithic Revolution in Africa. Can you provide any help with this kind of thing? I'm interesting in improving the history sections of country pages and would like to focus on the least edited pages (which are almost all African countries). Please let me know your thoughts. Many thanks!Monopoly31121993 (talk) 13:50, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Monopoly31121993! I am happy to help, although I hate to be the bearer of bad news - there are almost no public resources out there for African archaeology. I'm trying to improve some of the African archaeology wikipedia pages, particularly those for UNESCO World Heritage Sites, but it is an uphill battle. If you have access to an academic library, or a library that can Interlibrary Loan books for you, you might want to check out a new book called "The Oxford Handbook of African Archaeology" edited by Paul Lane and Peter Mitchell - it's the best, most recent source out there for current info about African archaeology topics. It's not organized by country, but you could definitely learn the state of current research on, for example, the Neolithic in Africa. Otherwise, if you don't have access to an academic library, you might want to sign up for Academia.edu, where many of us post our publications. It's completely free, although you have to adjust your privacy settings or you'll get a ton of useless messages. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know! Ninafundisha (talk) 21:39, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Ninafundisha! Thanks for this info. I'll try to request the Oxford Handbook. Cheers!Monopoly31121993 (talk) 14:17, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Help us improve the course page system!
[edit]Hi! I'm very interested in your opinion and experiences as an instructor of La Crosse/African Archaeology (ARC 312) (Fall 2014). We prepared some questions to gain deeper insight in user experience. Please let me know, if you could spare some time and help us improve the design of the Wikipedia course page system in regards of the need of all users (instructors and students). This won't take too long (about 30 min live) and you are also very welcome to answer questions by mail if preferred so. Please feel free to forward this to anybody who might be interested. Thanks for your support Sputniza (talk) 14:00, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
Change in your user rights
[edit]Your Wikipedia account was previously granted a user right called "course instructor" by the Wiki Education Foundation. That right enabled you to create a course page through the EducationProgram MediaWiki extension. Starting in fall 2015, the Wiki Education Foundation has discontinued its use of this extension. Going forward, users should create course pages through the Wiki Education Foundation website. That application is more user-friendly, and any content is automatically mirrored to Wikipedia. To prevent confusion, we'll be removing your "course instructor" user right, as it is not needed with the new system. This is simply a notification of the technical change to your account. No action is needed from you at this time.
If you plan on teaching with Wikipedia for the fall 2015 term, please email me (helainewikiedu.org) for instructions how to create your next course page using our new system. --Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk), sent by MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:34, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

Contests
[edit]User:Dr. Blofeld has created Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Contests. The idea is to run a series of contests/editathons focusing on each region of Africa. He has spoken to Wikimedia about it and $1000-1500 is possible for prize money. As someone who has previously expressed interest in African topics, would you be interested in contributing to one or assisting draw up core article/missing article lists? He says he's thinking of North Africa for an inaugural one in October. If interested please sign up in the participants section of the Contest page, thanks.♦ --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:34, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
Hello. I've revamped the contest page into this, based on the new British model. Long term goal, but I've added entries since the beginning of July to give it some initial life. Please add anything you've done then this then too! I hope it proves productive long term. The contests are still planned, but will be more tools towards increasing bulk output in overall goal. It's a permanent goal now, and open! I would be grateful if you could keep a record of all your articles you do there, as I really think seeing the combined efforts will encourage others to create more content too! Please spread the word to the others, cheers!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:15, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Dr. Blofeld: Thanks for the update! I'm teaching a course on African archaeology this semester, and my students will be creating/editing lots of pages. We'll try to add those to the list. Ninafundisha (talk) 14:23, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
Invite to the African Destubathon
[edit]Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most geography, wildlife and women articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing, whether it's a river in Malawi, a Nigerian footballer, or a South African civil rights activist, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. For those of you who signed up to the North African contest, that will hopefully be held in the new year. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:11, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

Former Student
[edit]I just wanted to give you a shout out and thank you for doing the Wikipedia project in your African Archaeology class a few years ago. Not only was it a fun project, but I learned several in's and out's of Wiki editing/creation. I'm not sure if you still do it as a class, but no student should ever question why you do the project. I currently have an internship where one of my tasks is to update the company's former pages and to create news ones as well! So, even though my internship is definitely not in African Archaeology, the class really helped me a few years down the line :) -- Kellypm94 (talk) 15:45, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Kellypm94: Thank you so much for this message - it made my day!! I'm so happy to hear that the Wikipedia project has turned out to be useful for you. Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. The articles done may also count towards the ongoing challenge. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Help would also be appreciated in drawing up the lists of missing articles. If you think of any missing articles please add them to the sub lists by continent at Missing articles. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:33, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
Hi. We're into the last five days of the Women in Red World Contest. There's a new bonus prize of $200 worth of books of your choice to win for creating the most new women biographies between 0:00 on the 26th and 23:59 on 30th November. If you've been contributing to the contest, thank you for your support, we've produced over 2000 articles. If you haven't contributed yet, we would appreciate you taking the time to add entries to our articles achievements list by the end of the month. Thank you, and if participating, good luck with the finale!

Seeking feedback on a guide for students who edit articles in cultural anthropology
[edit]Hi Ninafundisha, Wiki Education is developing a guide to help students edit articles related to cultural anthropology and we'd love to hear what experienced users think of our draft so far. I've solicited feedback on a few WikiProjects, including WikiProject:Anthropology, but haven't heard much yet. I wanted to reach out personally to experienced editors who have an interest in these topics to see if they'd provide feedback. Essentially, the guide is meant to supplement other resources that students consult, such as an interactive training and basic editing brochures. It would be great to get any feedback on the draft by April 18th. Would you be interested in taking a look? Thanks for considering! Cassidy (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:09, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Cassidy (Wiki Ed): I'd be happy to help. Feel free to send the draft! Do you know if there are any such efforts to help students edit archaeology articles? If so, I'd really like to be involved somehow. Thanks! Ninafundisha (talk) 03:20, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks so much @Ninafundisha: I posted the draft here, User:Cassidy (Wiki Ed)/Cultural anthropology. Feel free to leave any thoughts on the Talk page. As far as archaeology specific resources, we haven't developed one yet, but are constantly creating new resources based on students' needs. I'll definitely keep you in mind for when we look into a project like that. Thanks again! Cassidy (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:18, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
missing list
[edit]Fwiw, when a redirect is needed, I just do that & leave it blue on the list - Skysmith comes along & updates every so often. Not sure it matters, but it's less work. Johnbod (talk) 15:53, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
- Are these ok, btw? Johnbod (talk) 16:31, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Johnbod: Definitely better, thanks! I'm going to make a few minor adjustments, if you don't mind. I'll add the Neolithic to the sentence about the Stone Age, and then adding Prehistoric Egypt is a little tricky - it's true up through the Neolithic, but then my sense is that Egyptologists don't really talk about the Bronze Age, Iron Age, etc., they get into Predynastic, Dynastic, Classical Antiquity... instead. Also, thanks for adding the Savannah Pastoral Neolithic sentence - I'm going to delete the Stone Bowl Cultures reference since that's a pretty outdated term, and add the other major pastoralist group (the Elmenteitan) from that era. Hope this helps. Ninafundisha (talk) 16:54, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
- Great, thanks! This recent exchange will clarify where I am with editing on archaeology, fwiw. Johnbod (talk) 17:00, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Johnbod: I totally agree with you about bigger, more comprehensive articles sometimes being the least clear and most problematic. I cringe at that African Archaeology page! I've had students try to work on it before, but it's much easier to assign them the site-specific pages than it is to get them to write more comprehensively. Thanks for your help with it. Ninafundisha (talk) 17:08, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

I added Sally back to the red list of Women in Archaeology Task Force
[edit]Hi Ninafundisha,
Sorry about that! I am so eager to get that Archaeology Task Force red list down to zero, I was being overzealous! I am looking forward to reading about Sally when you write her biography. I learned quite a bit this morning from you, Joe and SusunW about notability guidelines and professional associations. I also enjoyed reading some of the articles you and your students have written. Please let me know if you need a biography written and are too busy to do it yourself. I enjoy writing womens' biographies. MauraWen (talk) 19:51, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

- @Joe Roe: No problem! Thanks for the note, though. She's probably best known for her work on Middle Stone Age archaeology, so when I get a chance I'll add some info about that. Ninafundisha (talk) 13:10, 27 June 2018 (UTC)

- Declaring that all women in Samburu are oppressed, by linking to a youtube video, is neither encyclopedic nor neutral in any way. If you would like to find some academic literature that talks about patriarchal social institutions in Samburu, and then put that in the "social organization" section along with the discussion of gerontocracy, then go for it. Ninafundisha (talk) 01:03, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
- Most Samburu women would disagree with the idea that they are "oppressed." There are lots of ways that women in Samburu have quite a bit of power. Are there problems in Samburu, such as with domestic violence? Of course. Those problems exist in America too, but we wouldn't issue a blanket statement in an encyclopedia that all American women are "oppressed." If you have statistics about social issues like this for Samburu, then great, include those. But over-generalizations are biased and unhelpful. Ninafundisha (talk) 01:27, 10 April 2020 (UTC) Maybe the majority of Samburu women you've heard about disagreeing about being oppressed were from Umoja or another matriarchal village inspired by it. As the source I cited on Samburu's particle regime was from Vice and I've heard the same story about Umoja's origins from several other reliable sources. Do you remember where you got the info that claimed that Samburu Women being oppressed was exaggerated? FYI Vice is also a reliable news source and the oppression Women current face in the USA is nothing compared to what Samburu women outside the Matriarchal Village face. Umoja's Cheiftess says so and she's also friends with Hillary Clinton.
- I am an anthropologist and I have spent decades of my life living in Samburu and working elsewhere in eastern Africa. I am an expert on this subject. Feel free to add a well-referenced section on the Umoja village. But please don't assume that you know something about Samburu women, and Samburu culture more broadly, just because somebody who is friends with Hillary Clinton says so. Making over-generalizations about all Samburu women plays into terrible stereotypes about African societies that are perpetuated by perhaps well-meaning but ultimately under-informed people from elsewhere.Ninafundisha (talk) 15:21, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
I didn't assume that Rebecca of Umoja was trustworthy just because she's friends with Clinton. I didn't think I was over generalizing Samburu Patriarchy as the Narrator on the Vice News special on Umoja that Samburu women are less then second class citizens in typical Samburu society because the Men make all the rules not unlike Several Countries in the past and present. However the Samburu's Patriarchs are one of the men who are far more brutal in oppressing women than many other countries today. Vice news states that the Samburu Tribes have been abusing it's women for 500 years. Are you saying that not all the Samburu Tribes (Not counting the Matriarchal villages) are extremely sexist? --ConfidentFungus (talk) 15:29, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
- With all due respect, the narrator of the Vice special is making outrageous over-generalizations that, as I have said, are perpetuating really damaging stereotypes about African men. I have no idea what you mean when you say Samburu men are "far more brutal" - that is nonsense. Yes, there is domestic violence in Samburu society. As I have said before, it's not any worse than in other places like the US. If you go to a Samburu community, they will welcome you in and feed you tea and celebrate your visit. When I lived in Samburu I was treated as family by men and women alike. The Samburu men whom I now consider family are the the kindest and smartest people I have ever met. Women are happy, men are happy, and this idea you have that all women are living in some kind of fear and oppression is frankly ridiculous. Yes, men own the cattle. Yes, men make decisions about grazing rights and things like that. But women have lots of other rights, and lots of other power in other ways. Here are some readings about African pastoralism that might help:
https://www.amazon.com/Rethinking-Pastoralism-Africa-Patriarchal-Pastoralist/dp/0821413694 https://rai.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/1467-9655.00003?casa_token=W3SMWpA2wCsAAAAA:mqmOSu812cIkoYI2ED1czvG9Tep8HIY9lKXRnOhFkYEYEzXTHD9_gR_4pAOJSEZWSVvND6fRT-IujWs Please, these are human beings just like you and me who have a vibrant community and a sense of right and wrong just like anybody else. Please understand that this Vice video is extremely biased, and damaging. It is also totally misinformed - five hundred years ago there was no such thing as the "Samburu" ethnic group. It's a nice round number they made up out of whole cloth. Ninafundisha (talk) 15:47, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
WHAAAAAAAT! Argh I can't believe I got tricked by and unreliable episode! Thanks for opening my eyes. --ConfidentFungus (talk) 16:02, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
