Official Navy Document Dates

You posted" "The convention at the time" Can not have been to have 1/2 the dates in one style, 1/2 in another...)" Actually, I have the original handwritten documents in my possession and yes, they did vary. Where I have entered items in blockquotes, it is a transcription of the document containing misspellings, contractions, different date conventions, etc... This item is from Naval Officer Records over 150 years old, that is how they wrote back then. 10th April 1839, Reappointed Ben F.B. Hunter 20th Aug 1835. August 20th 1835 appointed5. Nov. 12th to the Warren 547. Oct. 10th 37 Resign. accepted 31, March 22 39 Reinstated and hold in readiness for active service 173. March 28th 39 to the Constitution (at Norfolk) April 11th to the Constitution at N.Y. 189.[1] Also, one warrant was dated and signed by President Martin Van Buren, I would not presume to change that

I appreciate the cleanup on the timeline dates, that was helpful, but please do not change dates transcribed from official Navy documents. --Signalcharlie (talk) 13:13, 13 March 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Signalcharlie (talkcontribs) 22:08, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Saba Hameed - Nicely Done :)

Hey Nik,

Many thanks for helping with Saba Hameed. I had no clue how to satisfy the demands of the various tags!!!

Its like a breath of fresh air now that you've put in all that work and the tags have been removed.

Linda Grant

I deleted the page so that another one could be moved to that title — please don't remove any links. Nyttend (talk) 13:32, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

But that page was already at that name? Or was it previously a redirect? Nikthestoned 14:26, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Here's the biggest amount of content that was ever in the page history:

THe name Linda Grant may refer to one of the following people:
*Linda Grant (journalist)
*Linda Grant (mystery writer)
*Linda Grant DePauw

The article itself was originally at Linda Grant (journalist), and it's been at Linda Grant (novelist) since it was moved from (journalist) in 2009. Linda Grant was a disambiguation page when it was created in 2005, but in 2006 it was converted to a redirect to (journalist), and it was unchanged (except for having its target changed when journalist was moved to novelist) until Robofish tagged it for deletion so that (novelist) could be moved. We've never had an article at that title. Nyttend (talk) 15:03, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Righto - apologies! Facepalm Facepalm Seems it just had many-a-link to a disambig page instead then, including two created by me =/ Nikthestoned 15:06, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
No, it was a redirect; the disambiguation content was removed in 2006 because none of the other Linda Grants had articles. Nyttend (talk) 15:13, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Oh OK, not too bad then. Cheers for the info anyway Nikthestoned 15:14, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Commons

Thank you for uploading free images/media such as File:Holy Trinity Platt Church.jpg to Wikipedia! As you may know, there is another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In the future, please upload media there instead (see m:Help:Unified login). That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view your previous uploads). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. This article makes the case for a Raleigh headquarters. Yet this does not. However, I'd like someone to look at it and make sure the statements in the article can still be considered accurate. I'm not clear on what to say because technically, the bank and the holding company could have two different headquarters.

As for what to call the article, I started it intending to write about NAFH, which didn't own Capital at the time. I'm not sure the name "Capital Bank (North Carolina)" is what we want when the holding company was the subject of the article.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 13:36, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

To be honest I didn't read the article, I just disagreed with the proposed name! The "North Carolina" disambiguation term was simply as it's the only state I can find mentioned as their base on their official "about us" page. Nikthestoned 14:07, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
I sure would like some help on this, because there are things going on here that Wikipedia just doesn't have policies for.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 18:47, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
This isn't something policy can really define, more what you think is right! Have sorted the Botswana one, changed Capital Bank to a disambig - just need to now decide where to move this one... I have replied on the talk page. Nikthestoned 09:07, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. As long as it's documented, I suppose it works. Thanks for all your work.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 14:48, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Commons renames

I moved a few of the files you wanted moved. As soon as you complete these other requests: Commons:Category:Media renaming requests needing target, I'll move them too. INeverCry 17:34, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

I didn't specifically want them renamed, just noticed that they had generic names! And I've no idea what to call them though a couple do look like they're possibly useful... Was hoping someone else would be able to figure out what they should be named, hence the blank tagging. Nikthestoned 17:40, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
It looks like atleast 2 of them are taken in the same place as File:Hoya de Huesca hermitage.jpg that you had me rename. I guess I could add a 2 and 3 to those files. INeverCry 17:52, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
I've renamed those 2 files. As for the other 5, they already have "Media lacking a description" tags, so the rename tags may be redundant. INeverCry 18:10, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
Yea, that may be sufficient. Thanks for looking at them anyways! Nikthestoned 08:28, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Intelsat

Does File:Intelsat headquarters colorized.JPG look less purple? Thanks. MBisanz talk 14:48, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

In my opinion, it's much better than the purple one, but still not much better than the original. I'm saying this mainly due to the sky again, which is now an unnatural blue colour. the building does look better, however. Can you maybe adjust one while leaving the other alone? Nikthestoned 14:57, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Cheers George. I was going to do the same but couldn't think of an interesting fact to include, other than that I used for the first book! Nikthestoned 08:15, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Fay Zwicky

I noticed that you changed my rating of start-class on this article to stub. The thing that confuses me is that in the edit where you changed my re-rating of start-class you give the summary: "rvt project importance assessments made by inexperienced editor"? You figured you were re-rating it from User:The Companion right? As it is, it looks like you meant me. I've changed back to start-class, which I think the article is based on refs 2 and 4 being verifiable (enough to avoid blp-prod) and that it gives some useful info and basically conforms to the requirements of start-class. INeverCry 09:18, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Also, your edit at Talk:Louis Zukofsky left the article with a bare wikilink to wp:poetry in an old talkpage section rather than a wp:poetry tag. I've added the needed tag. INeverCry 09:52, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict)No, sorry, not you at all! That comment was re: the fact that User:The Companion went round editing articles (usefully, granted) and then amending both the importance and the quality of the various wikiprojects. I was attempting to revert only his changes (i.e., putting it back to "Low" importance - hence the "rvt project importance assessments" summary as opposed to the "rvt project assessments" summary I left here!) but accidentally did yours too. I did leave a note on the talk page, but obviously wasn't clear enough... Apologies again! Nikthestoned 09:53, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
I didn't touch the WikiProject Poetry tag ...
I don't know what you mean. You reverted to a version of the page that didn't have a wp:poetry tag (as you can see if you scroll down in the "I didn't touch" link you just gave above). All there was was an "untitled" section with a wikilink to wp:poetry. I fixed this by wp tagging the page as you should've done. INeverCry 10:07, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
I assumed by "Also, your edit at Talk:Louis Zukofsky left the article with a bare wikilink to wp:poetry" you meant that I had caused this issue - I didn't touch anything to do with the WikiProject Poetry tag (as in, it wasn't there in the version before my revert) - was it just you informing me that I'd missed a problem on a page? As I'm sure that I often miss many! Nikthestoned 10:10, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
Now I see that that wp:poetry link was added in 2004, when there probably was no tag. I guess I just wanted to have something to apologise to you for too. Sorry about all that. I feel like a bit of a jerk over that "should've" comment. Sorry again. INeverCry 10:32, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
All is well lol - un-constuctive editing has all been reverted and we fixed up a couple of WikiProject tags to boot, seems like it worked out just fine! Nikthestoned 10:41, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for not being too annoyed with me.

When it comes to our coverage of literary Nikolais and others, I've done a little bit, but there's so much more to do. I'd like to make them all like Nikolai Leskov (90% of which is the work of my good friend Evermore). What little I'm able to do in regard to Russian literature and writers is a "labor of love", to use one of my favorite clichés. INeverCry 19:52, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

That article is pretty impressive indeed! Growing up in England, I never met or heard of anyone else with the name until late into my teens... So yea, nice to spot it now and again! Nikthestoned 08:43, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Possibly. Hi Hanham123. I take it you mean the Varosha, Famagusta page? Your reversal has since been reverted by User:Seric2. This is as Wikipedia is not a collection of external links (see the guideline here: WP:LINKSPAM) and an image gallery hosted on a car hire site isn't what we want for the external links section. Cheers, Nikthestoned 08:12, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
Hi Nik, yes correct it is the Varosha, Famagusta page . The link is much more than just an image gallery, the page links to a full section on Varosha including a personal interview and account of somebody who was displaced. http://www.rhinocarhire.com/The-Varosha-Blog/A-Personal-Account-of-the-1974-Invasion.aspx . The editor who did this work is based in Cyprus and is always updating the pages with new information. I would ask that you reconsider as feel the page is of genuine use and a valuable source of information, the fact it is hosted on a car hire site should have little bearing. Hanham123 (talk) 09:22, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
If used to support a statement as an in-line citation, I'm sure that link would not a problem. As per the policy cited above; as an "External link", it is a problem. Also, the fact that it's on a car hire site is genuinely a problem - if we direct internet traffic to that site, we could be inadvertently promoting it above other other, similar, resources. Links to shops of all kind should generally be avoided. Nikthestoned 09:30, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

Avalone is so prolific under so many pseudonyms -- sharing similar trivia with fellow enthusiasts is one of joys of editing Wiki and GoodReads. I wonder if this article has a long-term value. As far as I can see, it looks mergeable into SOS Adventure series, as there are not any valuable commentaries in the article. --George Ho (talk) 21:52, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Well, I'd say it is indeed notable enough on its own to warrant its own article... However, given we have the series-article for the others, I don't see it being a particular problem either way Nikthestoned 08:15, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Then, may I at least merge it boldly, or shall I propose? --George Ho (talk) 14:43, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
No need for merger proposal, just go for it! So long as nothing is lost I've no complaints . Nikthestoned 14:47, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Done --George Ho (talk) 15:00, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

You putting the "Reception" section back in? Nikthestoned 15:15, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Re-inserted the section. However, it needs copyediting, or there are too many details. Either you or I must simplify them. --George Ho (talk) 15:51, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Removed the Bookwitch review, given this was a blog (albeit one by a notable journalist). Looks about right now! Nikthestoned 15:56, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
I have copy edited the section. --George Ho (talk) 16:08, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

This article has no value as a stand-alone article. Do you mind if I can convert it into an article about the series Eddie & the Gang with No Name? --George Ho (talk) 08:27, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Given the other two "Gang with No Name" books are completely notable, I'd say in this instance that this article should be improved as a standalone article, rather than changed to an overall one... I'm sure there is more out there on this - just couldn't find it at the time! Nikthestoned 08:32, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
Already created article about the novel series. No merges involved; just copy-and-paste. --George Ho (talk) 09:11, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
Well, I'd say it is notable enough, as mentioned, but I suppose if you'd like you could stick it in that joint-article until someone comes along and improves & splits, should that ever occur... Nikthestoned 09:27, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Already merged the third novel. What about other two: Reservoir Pups and Bring Me the Head of Oliver Plunkett? Just too much to merge, or generally adequate in the series article already. --George Ho (talk) 10:22, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Too much to merge, I'd say. Nikthestoned 10:33, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi

You recently removed an edit I made to this article, as it was not sourced. I find some of the technicalities of editing Wikipedia a bit confusing, especially when it comes to sourcing, so I usually leave someone else to source the additions that I make. However, the citation for my addition can be found on the BBC Book at Bedtime website:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01m42mr

If you could reinstate my edit with this source, that would be great. In the future, I would suggest that you search online for sources first, before you delete information. My edit did specifically mention the BBC and Book at Bedtime, so it would have been easy for you to find this link yourself.

Have a nice day

George George.millman (talk) 16:24, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi George. I did look for sources for this from independent, third-party sources; which, given this is about a BBC show, the bbc.co.uk/programmes link is certainly not. Additionally, those programmes/FOO URLs appear to only last so long, and as such this link will certainly be dead within a short time. Hence my removal of your edit! Should you wish this to be re-added, please feel free to do so with a third-party source confirming it - like something from a newspaper or on the bbc.co.uk/news domain (or provide me with such information!). I wouldn't usually remove but, given this is a "Good Article", its quality should be maintained. Cheers, Nikthestoned 16:29, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi

Actually, the link will not be dead in a short while. Here is a link to a previous story featured on Book at Bedtime, and the link is not dead... it remains archived:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01jxzg5

But, if this isn't a 'third-party source' (I don't really understand the way sources work, as I explained), then I don't see what source I can find. Newspapers don't announce what is on Book at Bedtime, except in 'What's on' columns or whatever. I don't see why this source isn't good enough. Surely the whole point of sources is to prove that a piece of information is accurate, and this piece of information clearly is accurate. I'm not vandalising Wikipedia, I'm adding a useful piece of information which is quite clearly accurate. The article has information about the publication history, including the audiobook, so why not the radio adaptation? I think there needs to be some level of flexibility and editors need to be given the benefit of the doubt sometimes, otherwise it entirely defeats the object of having a database that can be edited by anyone. If rules have to be stuck to this thoroughly, then it might as well only be possible for the staff to edit it. (I'm not saying there shouldn't be rules, but they need to be flexible.)

George.millman (talk) 17:08, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

I've explained why the source isn't good for two reasons (that link provided aired Fri 22 Jun 2012...) Check out WP:IRS for help with reliable sources. Also, check out the other sources in the article - the information there is supported by a source independent from the subject. If no-one is reporting on this adaptation in any way, no reviews or mentions in articles, then the adaptation isn't notable enough information to be included in the article. Additionally, check out these links for examples of third-party sources covering "Book at bedtime" shows: 1, 2 (although BBC, this is a news item), 3. Nikthestoned 17:19, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

I'd like to point out in response to that that with that rule, none of the information under 'Plot' should be on the article, because that can only be sourced from the book itself, which is not a third-party source independent from the subject. I don't actually think that, I am merely using it as an example to point out how ludicrous that rule makes things. As for finding another source, there is a website called radio4bore, which talks about everything on Book at Bedtime... but I'm not sure if that should be used, as it is a blog and I know Wikipedia doesn't usually use blogs as sources. Should I use it?

I have to say that I'm not desperately impressed with the way that you've handled this actually. It's all very well and good showing that a piece of information is accurate and reliable, and I try to do that; however, you seem to be more interested in blindly following rules than exhibiting any common sense, and that is not a sustainable way to run a great project like Wikipedia, the whole point of which is everyone editing as a community. George.millman (talk) 17:32, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Actually, the point about plot is covered in guidelines somewhere lol - though I don't know where offhand. If this wasn't a good article, I'd add a Citation needed tag and leave it in. As it is, it should maintain it's good standard! I think if you wait a short while more sourcing will become available - this tends to be the case. Nikthestoned 18:05, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

I have created a working article about the Dan Starkey novel series. I wonder if you can make improvements. --George Ho (talk) 18:57, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello again George . Good work with that, looking really good! I've actually not read any so can't comment on the accuracy re: the plots etc - I got what's in each article from the reviews and the Google book previews! Will take a look anyways Nikthestoned 08:27, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello, thanks for your note. Here is my response to the editor.

Good day. I have been advised that your article was just missing a reference tag and that is why most of it was not appearing in the review page. Normally I catch these and simply fix them, but obviously I missed this one. I cannot simply undo my decline now because there have been intermediate edits in the meantime. I suggest you resubmit it for review once you are satisified with the article. All the best. Snowysusan 21:31, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Withrow High School/School Traditions

Hi Nik-

I am tigertwice and have built up the Withrow Minstrels section of the Withrow High School School Traditions page. This was a tremendous amount of work.

Why have you removed it?

Thanks

Steve Martin srsmcom@gmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tigertwice (talkcontribs) 22:53, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Steve. So you know, I've now removed it once more. Given you've had a couple of experienced editors remove this twice, not sure why you put it back a third time without waiting for a reply, but whatever. As per the talk page discussion you've been directed to, the information was overly (or even massively) detailed for what should be on a Wikipedia article. You also need to take a look the article guidelines for schools and the guidelines on promotional writing. Lastly, I take it from your name that you're the percussionist on the band. If this is the case, I suggest you read Wikipedias guidelines on conflicts of interest. Nikthestoned 09:15, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

Bryan Gruley article

I see the change you made which is cool. I can't see the harm of using Mr. in front of a subjects name the way the New York Times does it. But if that's the wiki way, I will cease doing so. 98.212.177.156 (talk) 09:11, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Talkback on RPP

Hi there! You left me a talkback on my talkpage referring to WP:RPP. The nature of RPP is that it gets cleared away reasonably quickly, and I haven't been on wiki for 4 days at least. Can you reraise the issue in question on my talk page, as I do vaguely remember your nick from the page, but not the request specifically. GedUK  12:00, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Ged, apologies! It was just a quick note mentioning that, while you stated on RPP that the Karlie Redd page was being protected for a week, you protected the page for a month. I'd say a month is the right sort of length too, at least until the furore calms down after the shows finale, which apparently was a couple of weeks ago. Cheers! Nikthestoned 12:07, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Ahh, right. I expect my fingers were on autopilot typing out the length, especially if it was one in a long sequence of protections I'd done, as it tends to be. Thanks! GedUK  12:10, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Withrow Minstrels

Hi Nik

YOu wrote

"Hello, I'm Nikthestunned. Wikipedia is written by people who have a wide diversity of opinions, but we try hard to make sure articles have a neutral point of view. Your recent edit to Withrow High School seemed less than neutral to me, so I removed it for now. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Nikthestunned 09:52, 20 November 2012 (UTC)"

Thanks for your comments. The "Minstrels" were a much loved Cincinnati tradition and were highly acclaimed in their day. I have tried to support my statements with footnotes. Do you have any suggestions for exactly what was out of line?

Thanks for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tigertwice (talkcontribs) 21:35, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Let's start with line 1 (bad = anything in italic): "The school was particularly well known for its annual production of the perennially popular, nationally known" - this is massively promotional and is filled with puffery, neither of which is acceptable on Wikipedia. Let's have a look at sentence 2: "Created by the school’s band director, a 22 year-old charismatically gifted musician, George G. Smith IV, “The Minstrels”, as it was known, would run for 35 years, under "Smittie’s" direction, while he and his wife, Thelma, nurtured the hopes and dreams of thousands of talented students" - again, much puffery etc. Additionally, it's conversational in tone as opposed to encyclopaedic. I'm not going to go on as this was easily enough to revert your promotional rewrite. You've done the same again, so I'm going to revert again. Please read the article guidelines about WP:PUFFERY, WP:TONE and WP:PROMO before re-adding, taking note of the Article guidelines for schools also. LAstly, it would help if others could confirm the information you're citing from sources so providing accessible copies of it makes things easier. Nikthestunned 09:16, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your help. I understand. Please take a look at my new edit, which I hope reflects your comments and meet the guidelines. Comments welcome and appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tigertwice (talkcontribs) 23:45, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

Nope, still fails to meet all of the above. I think what would be better here is if you created an article for the Withrow Mistrels themselves, possibly through articles for creation and linked it to the High Schools page. That way the article on the school isn't constantly in a state of change and can indeed be about the school itself. From what you've been adding to the article, the Mistrels are notable enough in their own right. Nikthestunned 09:40, 26 November 2012 (UTC) Excellent idea. That is what I will do. Nik, I have created a Witrow Minstrels article. Would be great if you could have a look. Tigertwice (talk) 00:01, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
