Hello

Hi. Haven't checked in with you for awhile, and I hope all is well. Pretty good myself. Last I heard you were thinking of working on a documentary, still documentering? May the force (or something equally better) be with you. Randy Kryn (talk) 19:08, 23 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi, Randy. Thank you, I'm doing especially well—had cataract surgery on both eyes a few weeks ago and now see better than I ever had—20/15 now (meaning that I can read text twenty feet away that someone with regular visual acuity must can read at fifteen feet. Of course, now I need reading glasses for anything closer than five feet.
Yes, I am learning how to use modern equipment—things have changed since I did documentary in the 70s (black & white video/16 mm film) and even since worked at CBS. The technical image quality has progressed greatly but incredible change is in the editing progress; audio is a different world. I now have a small mixer/digital recorder with timecode and four audio channels that can be synched to the camera without a wired connection. And transcripts via voice recognition! Still working on ideas. Any suggestions?
While you're here, so to speak, are you using the Wikipedia Library card? — Neonorange (talk to Phil) (he, they) 19:55, 23 September 2021 (UTC)
That's great news, you've got Ted Williams-style eyes now (don't be too vocal about it or the Air Force or Space Force will forcefully "recruit" you). You seem to have a good understanding of how the new stuff works, and you can even hire or "recruit" a college student majoring in that tech to assist (extra credit if you arrange it with their department chairman or dean or whatever they're called nowadays). As for ideas, you can't go wrong doing a James Bevel documentary, few if any have (a fellow did a filmed interview during Bevel's hospice care soon before he died, used to be on youtube, I think under 'James Bevel's last sermon' or a similar name, but nobody as far as I know has done even a half-hour or hour documentary, let alone the legendary 90 minute take). Filmed interviews with Bernard Lafayette, Andrew Young, and others would open up that playing field for a 45-yarder from Tom Brady. Congrats again on the new eyes (related, I keep my computer screen size at 175% and think the Wikipedia default 100% size was probably designed for 14-year olds). Randy Kryn (talk) 20:42, 23 September 2021 (UTC)
Ken Burns, I'm not. The archive material for documentaries made long after the events are expensive—and that's just the research necessary to find the stuff, never mind the cost of the media. I'll send you some transcripts as I get started. — Neonorange (talk to Phil) (he, they) 21:04, 23 September 2021 (UTC)
Neonorange Burns, has a ring to it. Probably only older scenes a Bevel documentary would need would be those famous dogs and hoses in Birmingham, some Selma march footage, and maybe a couple others thrown in. Interviews with a few living civil rights leaders and a wife or two would fill out at least a half hour or hour. You'd be surprised at how little has been presented by media on Bevel. That said, any Indian buffets open around you yet? Haven't had one since late 2019 (the old days). Randy Kryn (talk) 22:51, 23 September 2021 (UTC)
Sixteen—according to yelp!—within less than ten miles. And not counting Atlanta. I'm about to get one my old documentaries from the early 70s digitized. It's about 45 minutes, but will probably fit on an email attachment—I'll send it to you. It's about the first textile mill strike in the South to win a union contract. Oneida Knitting Mills in Andrews, South Carolina, There's No Hiding Place Down Here. The plant is now closed. — Neonorange (talk to Phil) (he, they) 23:39, 23 September 2021 (UTC)
We have Indian restaurants but no buffets as yet, just take out or off the menu. Not the same as a good buffet. Thanks for the offer, sounds like an important historical topic that I don't remember ever knowing about, will enjoy seeing it. Randy Kryn (talk) 03:00, 24 September 2021 (UTC)

Cooling off?

Interesting thought for Kusma. While you speak of cooling-off, I feel getting hotter every day. Could you please help translating the articles I named as missing? I finally started Panitz myself after nothing happened. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:34, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Where are the reliable inline citations here? (And that's just one example, - I see many of that kind.) We added them now, three of us. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:54, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Cooling off—I thought it best to be somewhat ambiguous and applying to several gathered there.
I saw you acknowledge the recent deaths of two of your collaborators; I hope their memory will live on in the work you did together.
I will take a look at the article you suggest. I must warn, however—I last studied German in 1967. Though I have worked in many countries, in Germany, only once, and only in Bonn, though I did have the pleasure of riding the train along the Rhine past the city, Mainz, whence my great-great-grand father Preetorius came in the 1850s. I will look at the links and reply further. — Neonorange (talk to Phil) (he, they) 00:06, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
I find a more extensive filmography as writer in IMBD:

Mein lieber Onkel Hans (TV Movie) (story)

1980Meines Vaters Straßenbahn (TV Movie) (scenario)

1977Absage an Viktoria (TV Movie) (writer)

1975Die unheilige Sophia (TV Movie)

1973Die sieben Affären der Dona Juanita (TV Mini Series) (writer - 4 episodes) - Die sechste Affäre & Die siebte Affäre (1973) ... (writer)

- Die vierte Affäre & Die fünfte Affäre (1973) ... (writer)

- Die dritte Affäre (1973) ... (writer)

- Die erste Affäre & Die zweite Affäre (1973) ... (writer)

1972Der Dritte (novel "Unter den Bäumen regnet es zweimal")

1970Netzwerk (scenario)

1967Der Revolver des Korporals (story)

which could point to further sources for citations I will post to your talk page as I find. — Neonorange (talk to Phil) (he, they) 00:17, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Die Fliege
Thank you for the offer, I'll see later what to do about links, formatting and inclusion. It will need a better ref than IMDb which is not a RS. - I acknowledge more than two collaborators who recently died when room (on my talk) permits, - five died this year alone, Flyer, Yoninah, SlimVirgin, Guillaume Tell and JGHowes. I wrote the Signpost obit (the beginning, - this is a collaboration) for Yoninah, and Brianboulton and Jerome Kohl will always be remembered. As if that wasn't missing enough, this year two friends, RexxS and LouiaAlain were driven away, and besides collaboration being broken, and friendship reduced to other channels, I feel extra workload by having to do at least a bit of what they would have contributed, because their absence leaves so much missing. - I replied on my talk to your post there, with musings I woke up with. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:49, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
We have now the films I could reference, 8 or so. They were all in the German article, but - heading for the Main page - I can use only facts with a ref. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:28, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
I will try Cineaste and a few film journals further. — Neonorange (talk to Phil) (he, they) 03:43, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Editing news 2023 #1

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this newsletter

This newsletter includes two key updates about the Editing team's work:

  1. The Editing team will finish adding new features to the Talk pages project and deploy it.
  2. They are beginning a new project, Edit check.

Talk pages project

Screenshot showing the talk page design changes that are currently available as beta features at all Wikimedia wikis. These features include information about the number of people and comments within each discussion.
Some of the upcoming changes

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Add topic" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Publish changes". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.
