before 2006
[edit]According to the wikipedia article Willie Mosconi, there was a World Straight Pool Championship before this millennia, but this article seems to only speak about what seems to be some sort of reboot of the championship in 2006. This article can be improved with a more detailed history of World Straight Pool Championship. -IPEdits (talk) 07:43, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- Yes there was a world championship in Mosconi's time. But maybe that one should be reserved for another article. FoxLad (talk) 23:47, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
Requested move 10 December 2018
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: Reverted: while not unanimous, the majority consensus appears to be to revert the undiscussed move highlighted by Andrewa. NPASR if further discussion about the exact target is desired. (closed by non-admin page mover) SITH (talk) 12:49, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
World Tournament → The World 14.1 Tournament – Fix to correct name per sources [7] and tournament logo [8]. Also World Tournament is a very ambiguous title (and should become the disambig page). 14.1 is a short name for this game. 37.54.110.97 (talk) 11:27, 10 December 2018 (UTC) --Relisting. - Support, but work "pool" into the title (World Straight Pool tournament?). There are many world tournaments. Randy Kryn (talk) 20:24, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
- Comment, the reason why I chosen "World Tournament" in a move done months ago because its the name with the trademark symbol, thus giving me the notion it might be the appropriate title. Well, what's your take? FoxLad (talk) 16:06, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
- Move to World Straight Pool Championship. The suggested title is very close to the World 14.1 Continuous Championship, which is another event. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 23:31, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- Considering that in 2011 the WPA stopped sanctioning the event, and the promoter no longer billed it as a world championship. Therefore, it probably wouldn't make much sense to still refer to this event as a world championship. FoxLad (talk) 02:00, 27 December 2018 (UTC)
- Move somewhere but possibly (see below) not to any of the proposals above. Surely there are sources that call it something that's recognisable to the general reader? Andrewa (talk) 14:57, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]I note that World Straight Pool Championship has always pointed to this article, following an apparently undiscussed move
00:45, 17 August 2018 FoxLad (talk | contribs | block) . . (47 bytes) +47 . . (FoxLad moved page World Straight Pool Championship to World Tournament: This pool tournament has been going by that name for years now. Well if the promoter ever decides to have the event sanctioned again, then we can move back
which IMO has no chance of consensus support. So at the worst it should be moved back immediately and any better title proposed as a fresh RM.
A possible eventual solution is to rescope the article. Andrewa (talk) 15:04, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
- Had this article stayed with the title of World Straight Pool Championship, I believe it might cause confusion and dispute regarding the event's winners and the fact that most of the seasons were not sanctioned by the WPA to be true world championships. FoxLad (talk) 18:08, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- It's an odd one, as it's an article that is about a tournament that is no longer a world championship. Pinging SMcCandlish who knows tonnes about cue sports, who'll have an idea one way or another. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 22:50, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- I would put it back at World Straight Pool Championship. "World Tournament" is obviously too ambiguous, and was a marketing name only used for a short stint. We'll need to disambiguate in the text between this event and the World 14.1 Continuous Championship (presently a redlink), because "14.1 continuous" and "straight pool" are synonyms. People unfamiliar with pool wouldn't know that, but players, at least older ones, certainly would and thus might not be sure which event they were looking for when looking for particular years' or players' results. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 00:02, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

Rfc on tournaments
[edit]The tournaments held 2009 and 2011-2019 were excluded from article because of the lack of sanctioning from the WPA or any governing body. However some users state that the unsanctioned tournaments can be included because of the circumstances involving those events. Rattatast (talk) 23:23, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Rattatast: I see no indication that WP:RFCBEFORE has been exhausted, but you state
some users state that the unsanctioned tournaments can be included
, so please provide links to the discussions where the matter has reached an impasse. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 11:15, 23 February 2023 (UTC) - Exclude. No sanctioning, no world championship. It's a pretty straight forward objective criteria. Including the unsanctioned tournaments is promotional. oknazevad (talk) 15:32, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- Include. The unsanctioned tournaments would be worth excluding if they are totally different events. But they're not totally different events. They retain a number of themes from their sanctioned predecessors. 104.172.112.209 (talk) 22:42, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- Include Just because an event is unsanctioned in by governing body, doesn't mean it isn't an edition of the same tournament. Armbrust The Homunculus 10:10, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
