Yay! Megalibrarygirl would love the help with lists. Double Yay! A person in Oceania will help a lot. We have found we all get different search engines. So what I find in Mexico, or Rosie finds in California, or Ian finds in Denmark, or Sue finds in Texas will be different. What I mean is that on whole, people tend to edit here, a volunteer project, on topics that interest them. Now, I'm sure there are lots of men with interest in inherently "female" topics but they'll be in the minority. Personally, I mostly edit on football, cricket, medieval history. Now, you could find me helping out on an article about, I dunno, Florence Nightingale, because someone asked me to, but I'd soon gravitate back to my natural inclinations.
To give an example, I recently declined a [rather abrupt] request to help with Romanian football because I don't know anything about it and am not interested enough to look into it - and that's a subset of a topic I *am* interested in. (The manner of the request didn't help!)
Still, I love your optimism. If you're ever working on a Featured Article candidate article, please do drop me a line and I'll try to help get it to pass. --Dweller (talk) 09:46, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm women scientists .... my favourite NZ woman scientist is Beatrice Tinsley and I think her article is quite well developed. But actually there's a new woman scientist here who works on making science interesting and accessible to young girls, her name is Michelle Dickinson (her nickname is Nanogirl!!) There's no article about her here yet. What are the guidelines for writing about living people, are there any special requirements to meet? Yes, see WP:BLP. We are more strict on requiring sources for articles on living people, and much more strict about sources for any controversial material. If you want to catch Keilana's attention, I'd use @Keilana:. Experienced wikipedians are likely to have tens of thousands of articles on their WP:Watchlist and not notice every individual change on every page. Re your additions on Tony Veitch. The large paragraph on recent developments may have over egged things. There is a phenomenon called WP:Recentism where very recent things tend to get much more indepth coverage because they're current and there are many sources everywhere. For biographies of living people balance is very important. The most common way to solve this is to improve the coverage of the subjects' back-story and historical career to keep the new content in balance or remove blow-by-blow accounts of recent events. Also the word 'backlash' is emotive and best avoided (unless used in the source). Stuartyeates (talk) 08:27, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help me!

Please help me with adding an infobox for a person when the birth and death date are only known in years. All the examples I've seen of infoboxes show a D/M/Y format for the birth and death but for my article Agnes Busby I only have years. I've tried to just put in the year but I get a red error in the infobox so I must be doing something wrong. Thanks!

MurielMary another really helpful thing is |df=y right before the ending }} it makes the date appear with the day first as opposed to the month first. Hi MurielMary I'm an editor form Wellington who also has been keen to raise the profile of New Zealand women scientists and women scientists in general. I have been gradually chipping away at my own personal "to do" list. I just thought I'd introduce myself to you. I've attended several Wikipedia edit-a-thons both physically and virtually, so if you do decide to organise one I'd be happy to participate. Category: New Zealand women is labeled as a "container" category which shouldn't have any actual pages in it. MurielMary (talk) 19:10, 8 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You are correct, it shouldn't. The best way to deal with articles in a container category (if they meet the criteria) is to move the article from a category into a subcategory (or subcategories). Commonly the article goes into a sub-subcategory or sub-sub-subcategory rather that a direct subcategory. Not unusually the category needs to be created. Looking at Te Puea Herangi, I'm thinking Category:New Zealand women in politics. I'm also undecided about creating a Category:New Zealand Māori women as a subcat of Category:New Zealand Māori people (and also adding Georgina te Heuheu, Metiria Turei, Donna Awatere Huata, Ocean Mercier, Linda Tuhiwai Smith, Mamari Stephens, Carmen Rupe, Miriama Kamo, Erenora Puketapu-Hetet, [[Diggeress Te Kanawa], etc). You're welcome to have a crack at creating such a category, or I'll create it in a couple of days (if I forget, feel free to remind me). Stuartyeates (talk) 19:32, 8 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still unconvinced on the value of creating gender-based categories. For example, Category:New Zealand women in politics has 157 pages in it but Category:New Zealand politicians only has 97. Isn't that suggesting that we have "politicians" and then we have "women politicians"?? When actually we should just have "politicians" and the "women politicians" should be a subset of that group, not a separate group. I think the way the Category:New Zealand doctors and Category:New Zealand women doctors are set up seems to be the preferable way. The women doctors are a subset of the doctors as a whole, not a group alongside. In fact, what I would most like to see is Category:New Zealand doctors with two subcats, Category:New Zealand male doctors and Category:New Zealand female doctors cos if we're distinguishing by gender we should distinguish both genders, not just one of them. (Were you planning on a subcat Category:New Zealand Māori men to go alongside Category:New Zealand Māori women?? MurielMary (talk) 10:09, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There are a couple of different points here (a) I'm not going to try and convince you of their value. If you don't believe they're valuable, you're welcome to ignore them entirely (actively removing them will get you in trouble eventually). (b) Counting the size of categories fails because of the nature of subcategories (this is a symptom of the fact that en.wiki categories are not mathematical sets), but I assure you that we have more male doctors and politicians than female ones. (c) You're not alone in thinking there should be a Category:New Zealand Māori men to go alongside Category:New Zealand Māori women, but there is an established consensus that we're not doing that on en.wiki (I believe that de.wiki does). Hmmm, interesting! I'm actually genuinely interested in the arguments *for* gender based categories, so I'd be curious to know more about this. (a) I'm a fan of gender (+other minority) based categories (provided they're a strict duplication of the non-minority categories) because they allow people to browse interesting groups of (usually) positive role models. Since I largely rationalise my wiki addiction as an effort to pave the internet in positive role models for my two young children, this is a compelling argument for me. It's not your fault, because it's not-obvious, but Sonja Davies doesn't need to be in Category:New Zealand politicians because she's already in Category:Members of the New Zealand House of Representatives which is a subcat (actually a sub-sub-sub-sub cat) of Category:New Zealand politicians. Don't mind me for butting in, was just flying by to see how you are getting along. Seems like you're enjoying editing. Yay! From the standpoint of data, the women's categories help us a lot. There has been a lot of press saying that Wiki's numbers are not representative of the world's diversity and based on a study (there are links over at WikiProject Women and WikiProject Women in Red, only 15% of the biographies on Wikipedia are about women. There may actually be more, due to category underlabeling or WikiProject underassigning (depending on from where the data is being pulled), but even accounting for errors, that's a pretty big gap. From the standpoint of data collection, we are trying to address both the lack of articles on women and provide better means to gather data. Other projects address the disparity of women editors, but WikiProject Women in Red, doesn't think it matters who writes the articles as long as they get written and as long as our data collection processes improve. Hi there, and a belated welcome both to the encyclopedia, and to that most arcane of its subdivisions, In the News! Enthusiastic new contributors are always a boon there, but I fear the atmosphere can sometimes feel anything but welcoming. It is really hard to get any item that isn't listed under recurring events through the regulars. I've been there on and off for years and never managed more than a couple of RDs! It has accreted hundreds of unwritten rules about what is and isn't allowed, which would be counterproductive to formalise, and thus fossilise. Don't feel discouraged. Hang around a bit, keep offering opinions, and perhaps try your hand at a few recent death nominations from your country -- though as you will have noticed many get rejected, sometimes for no clear reason beyond no one liked them. The best way of getting an event or obituary included is always to work at the article as quickly as is feasible, always bearing in mind that reliable sources are a must for anything that goes on the main page.

Clearly with no prior knowledge of the woman, you have changed Bonnie Lou's entry to delete "Bonnie" in many cases and treat "Lou" as her last name. Her performing name was "Bonnie Lou," and her last name was Okum. Lou was never her last name and while researching I found no instance in life when she was referred to as "Lou" in hundreds of articles over decades. The AP made an error in her obituary referring to her as "Lou" as if it were her last name. Because AP made the mistake doesn't mean it should be institutionalized on Wikipedia. Lest you get the idea to refer to as "Okum" throughout the article, she was virtually unknown in public by her last name. Millions of Americans know and knew her only by her performing name, Bonne Lou, and that's how she should be appropriately identified in this entry. The New York Times got it right in its obituary. As the entry clearly states, Bonnie Lou's legal name was always "Mary Joan." The discussion about her early years refers to her by the name she used at the time -- her given name -- and the context is obvious to readers. She wasn't known then as "Bonnie Lou." The rest of the article refers to by her well-known performing name, and there is no reason to think this will confuse readers or that it needed to be changed. Please provide some evidence that the WP style book would treat a a single performing name, "Bonnie Lou" as if it were a first and last name when it was not. In respect to childhood name context, I refer you to the entry for Bob Dylan, which says, "Robert Zimmerman lived in Duluth until age six, when his father had polio and the family returned to his mother's home town Hibbing where the family spent the rest of his childhood." The context in both cases is clear to readers. The situation between the two is different in that Zimmerman adopted "Dylan" as a last name, but Bonnie Lou used no last name as a performer. You clearly have an agenda to disguise the misinformation regarding this pilot who claims to have flown from the UK to Sydney alone. She has throughout the entire journey been co piloting with her partner and aircraft owner Ewald Gritsch. As a long distance solo pilot myself and a former aviation journalist I am determined to correct this PR execise that has exploited the achievements of Amy Johnson. Sadly Curtist Taylors media exploits will come home to rob other female pilots of their achievements. She has claimed a previous 'solo' flight from Cape Town in which of 44 legs she flew four solo. Seems resolved; the edit-warring has stopped, with an agreement on the talk page to wait for better sources to clarify the issue in dispute. If it weren't resolved, WP:ANEW is a good venue to report edit-warring. Getting more community input - for example by leaving a comment at a relevant noticeboard or a WikiProject talk page, or by pursuing dispute resolution - might also have helped. Hello! I agree with the idea of making a page that collates all the Tubman memorials, but appreantly that's against the rules. The other editors are going to tell you on the deletion page as well that including her based on the decades/centuries old incorrect reporting of history is not a criteria on Wikipdia. I actually agree with what you are saying and with the current policy. You're entirely correct about history, however if righting history was part of the criteria here, what would happen is we would not be righting history-- we'd be writing history. And with a group of anonymous randomly qualified editors deciidng what is historically correct, that could turn out messy! So we have to rely on sources. That said, I like where you are coming from politically, and would be happy to help make things fit into the Wiki according to policy. Drop me a line on my talk page if you need help with anything in that regard! I know they will shoot down the "sculptures of Harriet Taubman", but I don't see why really. If there can be lists of stadiums (stadia?) then why not memorials? ALso, her being on the $20 US bill is getting a lot of play, so consciousness is changing as we speak. Hi MurielMary, I suggest that you would make your editing of WP a bit quicker if you used Template:DNZB instead of creating references to the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography manually. Last night, you added a number of alumnae to Christchurch Girls' High School and frequently backed the additions with references that pointed to the DNZB. It'll be quicker to copy and paste the following line and then fill in the four parameters:

The parameters are:

  • last: last name of author
  • first: first name of author
  • id: the id number in the URL of the DNZB entry
  • title: the title of the DNZB entry

In case the author of the particular DNZB entry has an article on Wikipedia, it'll be five parameters:

Christchurch meetups

Hi,

It is awesome you are adding to content on women in Wikipedia as well as encouraging female wikipedians to contribute.

 There's a geonotice facility for Wikipedia meetups. It will notify wikipedians in Christchurch about the meetup. However this isn't gender specific so both genders will be notified. Just another way of getting the word out there.
  • Getting word out about the edit-a-thon
 In the 29 May edit-a-thon you had a web page for sign up etc. Are you planning to have the same thing this time or will the meetup page for the edit-a-thon be you rmain page? I am asking because I'd like to help get the word out about this edit-a-thon. 
  • List of pages worked on
 Noticed the Wellington edit-a-thon's post event edits, have you considered using a hashtag for your next edit-a-thon? Hashtag isn't necessary. Just ask people who participated to edit the event page and list the page(s) they worked on in a section of that page. It will help you identify what's been accomplished after the edit-a-thon. I noticed it was done in a few other edit-a-thon's pages. For example  Art & Feminism Meetup in Auckland. Perhaps it gives people attending an idea that what has been accomplished and may be what you need in future to when asking for use of facilities. I think some places/organisations may be willing to contribute to the effort if they can see past record. This may (in the long term) perhaps enable you to apply for grants for facilities. Just a thought.
  • Possible tidy up
 I would like to edit and tidy up the Christchurch meetup page to achive the following:
 * A main Christchurch meetup page where you (and others organising christchurch meetups) can create sub pages off.
 * Enable you to ask people interested in Christchurch meetups to watch the main Christchurch meetup page. 
 This will result in 
 * Moving the Christchuch meetup on 29 May to a sub page and making that page the main page.
 * Possibly moving the June Christchuch meetup page too. I won't do this if it messes things up -ie if you have already linked to this page we won't move it. Doing the change to the 29 May means you can ask people who attend the June meetup to watch the main Christchurch meetup page.
 There's no real need to mess around with these except it does allow people to watch one page so they are notified of changes (which for a meetup page may mean a new meetup has been listed). HI. @MurielMary: Suggest you create a section on the meetup page for "Pages done" and ask people participating in your edit-a-thon to add a link to the pages they changed and their username to that list. That looks like what was done for Wellington. After the event he went through and tidied up the section to divide it into sections like pages created, updated etc. Look at the Wellington edit-a-thon history and compare the version on 29 May around 4pm with current version.

I saw your GGTF post about the ugly exchanges on the Wikipedia Facebook page. I've commented on it and I'm hoping that the page admin will take note. Pretty much every reply to Heather's remark there is either logical contortions or childish abuse. It's downright shameful, so thanks for pointing it out.

Just the other day, I commented on the archaic, fanciful presentation of the article about Pier Gerlofs Donia. Whoever is writing those presentations doesn't seem to treat history as a particularly serious topic. I'm not really that surprised that this has resulted in an archaism like "known to man".

Hi Carcharoth thanks for the note. No worries. I did get the ping, thanks for that, and would have changed my oppose to a support if I'd been able to do it in time. However time differences and real life do get in the way sometimes! As I said on the ITN/nominations page, the 7 day archiving aims to keep the "recent deaths" and "in the news" discussions fresh, new and relevant. It's not in keeping with the aim of the ITN/RD sections to have "old"/"stale" deaths or events on the main page. It's not usual though for a nom to still be under discussion when it gets archived. Usually an admin has checked the oldest noms and closed them well before the bot archiving happens. It was unusual to have editors still working on an article 6.5 days after the nomination - usually the work has been done (or not) and a decision to close or post has been made at least 1 or 2 days before the 7-day expiry. BTW, did you look at the "page view stats" on the Ahmed Zewail article? It had 65,000 views over 2/3 August, without even being featured on the main page, so the article has certainly had plenty of interest and exposure regardless of whether it was on the MP or not. Anyway, I hope you continue to work on biographies and make some noms at ITN/RD as it's always interesting to see different types of people featured on the MP. Thanks. I do have some thoughts on page views (if an article is still getting lots of page views, maybe that means it is still in the news?). Hi MurielMary, as you like writing about women artists, here's a potential candidate for you. Lugnuts created an Olympic stub bio the other day for swimmer Len Moorhouse, and I was curious whether he was a descendant of William Sefton Moorhouse. Whilst I haven't found the answer to my initial question yet, what I did find is that his wife (Peg Moorhouse) is still alive (at least she was earlier this year), and that she appears to meet notability criteria. New Challenge for Oceania and Australia

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! I'm not going to war on this, but honestly, there are huge sections of her article (e.g. mental health) which aren't touched upon by the lead.
