Leila Alaoui
[edit]... that French-Moroccan photographer Leila Alaoui, described as "one of the most promising photographers of her generation", was killed in a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso?
- Reviewed: Template:Did you know nominations/The Chinese Road
- Comment: Sorry the nomination is a couple days late. I was going to nominate it last week, but it was under AfD, which is now withdrawn.
Created by Emnamizouni (talk), MurielMary (talk), Megalibrarygirl (talk), and Lopifalko (talk). Nominated by Zanhe (talk) at 03:18, 28 January 2016 (UTC).
- I think it worth announcing that she died, but I think "one of the most promising photographers of her generation" sounds like hyperbole and Wikipedia shouldn't be promoting this kind of talk. However it was Jean-Luc Monterosso that said it, so does anyone more knowledgeable than I think it worth taking note of? -Lopifalko (talk) 09:44, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
- How about: ALT1 ...that French-Moroccan photographer Leila Alaoui used to set up a portable studio in a public place, such as a market square, and invite interested passers-by to be photographed? Megalibrarygirl (talk) 19:11, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
- Or
ALT2 ... that after photographer Leila Alaoui was killed in a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso, King Mohammed VI said he would pay for the transport of her remains to Morocco?-Zanhe (talk) 18:27, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
- Full review needed now that ALT hooks have been suggested. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:53, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
- Created on Jan 19/nom on Jan 28, outside 7 day window. However, none of nominators except Megalibrarygirl have any DYK credits and she has only 6. In addition, the file was AfD on the day of creation and not marked as "Withdrawn by nominator" until Jan 23rd, thus was within 5 days of determination to keep and only 3 days outside of original window. Seems logical that an exception to dating is reasonable in the circumstances. 3614 char/long enough. Neutral. No apparent copyvios. Only one citation missing. No image. QPQ done by nominator. Hook 0 at 175 char/under maximum. Interesting though somewhat hyperbolic, as noted above. Parts of the hook are verified by NY Times piece, citations immediately follow varying parts of hook; however, she wasn't killed in the attack, she died later from a heart attack as a result of being in the attack. Alt1 at 181 char/under maximum. Very interesting and a unique approach to portraiture. Also verified in the NY Times piece and cited immediately following. Slightly tweaked hook adding commas to offset adverbial clause and removing redundant to. Alt2 at 170 char/under maximum. Same problem with this hook as hook0, she was injured by terrorists and died of a heart attack, though the rest of the hook is confirmed by the Morocco World News article. My preference is for Alt1 which focuses on her work and notability rather than her death. The sentence beginning "After school, she returned to Europe ..." needs a citation. If you want to somehow reword 0 or 2, I'll be happy to look at them again. Please ping me with comments or to advise when the citation has been added. Thank you all for an interesting piece and nice save from deletion. SusunW (talk) 06:38, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
- Hi SusunW I remember that the sentence you mention above (starting with "After school, ...) was already in the article when I started working on expanding it. It was uncited then and I left it, thinking I would probably come across that information in one of the sources I used for my writing, and be able to add a citation, but actually I never did come across it; I've removed it now and replaced it with a cited statement about that period of her life. Thanks very much for the thorough review. MurielMary (talk) 10:41, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks MurielMary. And one correction to the above, MurielMary has one other DYK to her credit. Why it didn't come up the first time I ran it, IDK. But it doesn't change the above analysis. File is
