Commons trouble

[edit]

Yo, I wonder if I could ask a favour. I uploaded Image:Katie Sierra in the Land of the Free.gif to Commons but screwed up the copyright tags and for some inexplicable reason I am unable to edit Commons image pages. Could you possibly copy-paste the copyright info on Image:GlobalIntifada.gif and paste it to the Sierra image? I don't want the copyright mafia to get all trigger happy and delete anything unnecessarily...скоморохъ 23:22, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Perfect, muchas gracias. скоморохъ 07:27, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's bizarre - when I click "edit this page" over there, the browser won't open the ".php" file and tries to open it with some word processor instead. So I can upload by clicking radio buttons, and strangely enough, comment on talk pages, but I can't edit images. There's probably some blindly obvious technical reason for it, but I am a neophyte at this programming business. скоморохъ 07:32, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if it came across as intended, but I meaning to be a bit hifalutin' / thot I was being funny with my reply at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places#Fort Cascades. I appreciated your setting a bit of a challenge, and I went looking for archaeological sites that were NRHPs that might fit the bill. Then in my response i thot it was funny to imply i was working on who knows how many WA NRHP articles. In fact i was involved in discussion/development of Good Article advancement of the Hanford site, which happens to involve a couple NRHP archaeological sites. I don't think the humour got acrossssss necessarily, oh well. :( doncram (talk) 01:41, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Image:Yavapai.jpg

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Image:Yavapai.jpg, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

{{{2}}}

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on [[Talk:Image:Yavapai.jpg|the article's talk page]] explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

List of Registered Historic Places in Washington

[edit]

Hi ... I see you attempted to fix the reflist template at the bottom of the Washington NRHP list. The reason it's not working is because there's a limit on the number of templates that can be included and resolved in an article. This also explains why the Whatcom County table looks like it does. When an article exceeds the limit, it is automatically added to . When individual counties are split out into separate articles and the main article is down to a reasonable size, the problem will go away. Thanks for all your valuable contributions and keep up the good work! --Sanfranman59 (talk) 00:01, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What I've done with the Alabama and Michigan lists (two other states with lots of counties) is to break out all of the counties with the most listings (am I allowed to use that term? ;^) into separate articles until the main state article has only the counties with a few listings and is down to about 80k in size. It's probably safe to assume that counties with more than 10 or 15 listings will need to be broken out. It's also been necessary to break out large cities from their county lists (e.g., Detroit from Wayne County). --Sanfranman59 (talk) 00:51, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I encountered the templates-not-resolving issue on the List of RHPs in WI list-article that grew to exceed 200k. I am pretty sure that is the limit. Resolved as Sanfranman59 suggests. doncram (talk) 05:03, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Spanish Civil War

[edit]

Hi, regarding the edits over Stanley Payne's opinion in the Spanish Civil War page, I'm afraid I don't agree with your edit. Firstly although this may be cited material, there is no factual information in this quote. It's entirely opinion and interpretation.

The leftist zone has been variously designated "Republican", "loyalist", and "Popular Front." Of those terms, the adjective "loyalist" is somewhat misleading, for there was no attempt to remain loyal to the constitutional Republican regime. If that had been the scrupulous policy of the left, there would have been no revolt and civil war in the first place. Thus after July 1936 what remained of the constitutional Republic gave way to the "revolutionary Republican confederation" of 1936–1937.

Which is fine in a work by an individual historian who is developing his argument, but citing one, highly partisan view in wp article is not productive. What the author is saying is that, in his opinion the Spanish republicans do not deserve the name republicans. And basically that the civil war was the fault of the left. Arguable, yes but highly pov I think. And it's not as if this is new and cutting edge research, the works cited were published in 1973 so I see no reason why they should be given special prominence in the text.

Nor do I agree with building up citations and counter-citations on the point. This would add nothing factual to the article and only confuse the reader. The debate as to respect to legality in the republican zone is a legitimate one but surely it's better dealt with elsewhere, for example in a historiography section.

Hope to hear from you. Jdorney (talk) 14:53, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:CNT-armoured-car-factory.gif

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:CNT-armoured-car-factory.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 07:30, 2 September 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Salavat (talk) 07:30, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Freecoasters deletion

[edit]

Proposed deletion of Freecoasters

[edit]

The article Freecoasters has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The article started out as a copyvio, and after the violating parts were removed, it is not much more than a dictionary definition. It does not show notability, and the only external link is to an amateur website. It is extremely unlikely that this article will ever grow to more than a stub.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I have started a discussion on the projects talk page soliciting the opinions of the members of the project if this project would be interested in being supported by WikiProject United States. Please feel free to comment on your opinions about this suggestion. --Kumioko (talk) 01:36, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:Northriver.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Northriver.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:13, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Francisco-sabate-llopart.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Francisco-sabate-llopart.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Replaceable fair use File:Francisco Ascaso.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Francisco Ascaso.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 03:52, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

2019 US Banknote Contest

[edit]
US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

The page Dirt (band) has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done for the following reason:

G11/A7, repeatedly submitted without improvement to AfC by obviously self-promoting accounts, virtually none of the information in the article is attributable to the cited sources

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, pages that meet certain criteria may be deleted at any time.

Please do not recreate the material without addressing these concerns, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If you think this page should not have been deleted for this reason, or you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. signed, Rosguill talk 00:23, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
