Message from WikiProject Wikify

A message from WikiProject Wikify!

Thanks for participating in the October 2010 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive! We made significant progress, wikifying hundreds of articles. However, the backlog still needs a large amount of effort--discussions about the next drive (in December) are underway. Until then, happy editing!

Children's Museum project

Hello! I just wanted to touch base here a couple weeks after the Backstage Pass event. You can see that images from the day are being added to theChildren's Museum of Indianapolis category in Commons. Note that there is a separate category of images of us from the day (rather than objects). We also received a little press on both the Children's Museum blog:The Wikipedians are Coming! and the Wikipedia Signpost had the event as their lead story last week. I will be continuing to work on organizing TCMI research content and moving forward with the content donation in the coming months. I will probably have an announcement about the content donation sometime around February, and I could certainly use your help in spreading the word at that point. In the meantime, do let me know on the project requests page if you are working on a TCMI related article and if you would like more resources or would like to be connected with a curator. Thanks! HstryQT (talk) 21:46, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

To say "It is fortunate Dürer left autobiographical writings and that he became very famous by his mid-twenties. Because of this, his life is well-documented by several sources" may be felt to be slightly unencyclopedic in style, but it is no way a breach of NPOV, unless you can produce evidence that there is a body of opinion that feels, or is likely to feel, that it is unfortunate that he left autobiographical writings. I wasn't very impressed by your other edits here, and see that my reversion has now been repeated by another editor. Johnbod (talk) 09:03, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

GOCE Drive – Final push

Greetings GOCE Backlog elimination drive participant, We are now coming up to the last few days of the drive, the last for 2010. Currently, it looks like we will achieve our target for reducing the backlog by 10%, however, we still have huge numbers for 2009. We have 55 participants in this drive. If everyone just clears 2 articles each, we will reduce the backlog by a further 110 articles. If everyone can just do 3 articles, we will hit 165. If you have yet to work on any articles and have rollover words, remember that you do need to copyedit at least a couple of articles in this drive for your previous rollover to be valid for the next drive. There are many very small articles that will take less than 5-10 minutes to copyedit. Use CatScan to find them. Let's all concentrate our firepower on the first three months of 2009 as we approach the end of this final drive for the year. Thank you once again for participating, and see you at the finish line! – SMasters (talk) 04:09, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Manuel García

Hello Ray! I thank you very much for copyediting my rough English in the article Manuel García (tenor) and making a clean sweep of my unencyclopedic excesses of enthusiasm.

Regarding the latter, I’d like, however, to venture some comments.

1. I’ve re-edited the last paragraph of the section about the Artistic features. It is sourced, reports historical opinions expressed about García, and gives substantial information on the singer. It doesn’t seem to be that different from statements to be found in other encyclopaedias. The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, for instance, bears these words: “The depth of his voice enabled him to take the title role of Don Giovanni which, according to Fétis, he sang with a ‘Herculean force’. His expert delivery of recitative, as well as the Andalusian fire of his stage presence, made him ideally suited to dramatic roles such as Otello and Don Giovanni” (James Radowki, article: “García, Manuel”, volume two, p. 347). Should you deem it necessary to modify again the paragraph, I suggest you take this source into some account (if you agree, of course!).

2. Restricting oneself to just calling Maria Malibran and Pauline Viardot mezzo-sopranos, pure and simple, and Manuel García Jr a common vocal pedagogue, might well seem to be more detached and objective than adding a flood of bombastic adjectives, but runs the risk, in my view, of not being quite correct. If anybody, in 2100, would refer to the Beatles and Maria Callas just as “a rock band” and “an operatic singer” of the latter half of the 20th century, it might well be considered correct in the abstract, but wouldn’t give the 22nd century reader an exact depiction of the past actual situation. Maria Malibran and Pauline Viardot were of course two mezzo-sopranos, but were also, much more significantly, respectively, a great world famous opera diva and a personality of consequence in the 19th century European music milieu. Manuel García Jr was not just a vocal pedagogue, but one of the greatest in history. Writing that a legendary opera diva of the early 19th century, a personage of consequence in the music culture of the following period (besides a diva herself!), and the greatest vocal pedagogue in history, sprang from the same family, has got a pretty different meaning from stating that Manuel García raised three children, two of whom became mezzo-sopranos and the third a vocal pedagogue.

Excuse my Latin verbosity! Cheers --Jeanambr (talk) 11:29, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

BTW: I’ve edited some further small additions to the article. Should you chance to be copy-editing around a bit, ...

Of course, I agree with the Wikipedia guidelines you expound, and, in fact, I had, first of all, thanked you for "making a clean sweep of my unencyclopedic excesses of enthusiasm". I just believe those guidelines are to be carried out cum grano salis, as it were. Anyway, I have added to the article further qualifications about García’s children, which I deem necessary to give the common reader an idea of what an exceptional family it was, without forcing one to go and read all specific articles. For Pauline Viardot and Manuel García Jr. I have declared my sources, while for Maria Malibran I have just restored the former statement, “the celebrated mezzo-soprano”, which is likely to be an understatement. Wikipedia articles about her start this way: she “was one of the most famous opera singers of the 19th century” (in English) and (in Italian); she “was a celebrated mezzo-soprano of Spanish origins” (in French) and (in Spanish); she “became the most famous [opera] diva (until today) of the first half of the 19th century” (in Portuguese); she "was celebrated as La Malibran and is considered the first diva of the history of opera" (German). Cheers.--Jeanambr (talk) 10:39, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
What about moving our discussion to the article’s talk page? If you agree, I could do it, or you could do yourself, if you like better.

Merry Christmas!

February 2011 Wikification Drive

Delivered by MessageDeliveryBot on behalf of Wikiproject Wikify at 00:33, 20 January 2011 (UTC).

Thank you for your vote!

I removed the bold formatting. I've been staring too much at my sources while I was editing, I didn't even notice it's not appropriate here. Thanks! About the sentence "Spread Eagle's self titled debut album was positively acclaimed by critics and is considered a "classic" today"

It's from Blabbermouth and it is in the references. Should it be a quotation instead?

I want this sentence in there, because it is a diplomatic version of what is written in most reviews: They all blame MCA for contracting them and then not promoting, because they should have been much bigger. All with different words, but the same.

I think Wikipedia is not the place to blame MCA and I think that sentence covers facts without saying names very well.

I'm even thinking about reediting the passage with the videos on their own money. It's from a band interview in the early 90's.

It's not a good idea to mess with UMG. :)

What do you think?

Nile… a death metal band that is influenced from Pokémon?

Just curious, but I've noticed you have reverted a lot of obvious vandalism to Nile (band), are you just having fun with the IP editor's vandalism in the edit summaries such as "If these guys are into Pokemon, then it doesn't show in the music." or when an editor added "penis" to that section you referenced their Ithyphallic album as credit to that idea. xD I'm just finding it kind of funny and hopefully you're intending it that way, because it's always good to fuck with the people that are trying to fuck with you as what I would always keep in mind. =) • GunMetal Angel 10:04, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

Children's Museum Update

Hello!
I wanted to give you an update on the Children's Museum Wikipedia collaboration. You can check out my brief overview in the Children's Museum blog, which includes details on the Apprentice Program project to create five new Wikipedia articles as well as the image donation and use of the new Wikipedia Widget to link the museum's website to Wikipedia.

Last month we completed our first museum image content donation of 30 images. While this seems to be a low number, what makes the donation unique is the curatorial involvement in choosing and vetting the images for their appropriateness and usefulness within Wikimedia (many of the objects are copyrighted toys and other works that have copyright restrictions.) The curators in the collections department were very hands-on in their involvement, and we'll be outlining this process in an upcoming case study. If you would like to help further this process, I'd be happy for you to help disperse the images into useful Wikipedia articles, or let the appropriate WikiProjects know of the new images. Another 30 will be uploaded in the coming month.

In addition to the collaboration with the Museum Apprentice Program students and the curatorial department, another important collaboration was between User:Ealdgyth and the American Collections curators to significantly update the Broad Ripple Park Carousel article. After an impressive amount of time and work, the article has now received Featured Article status. The museum is absolutely thrilled and will now be adding a QR code to the carousel exhibit Carousel: Wishes and Dreams. In the future, more QR codes will be added to the objects that have had articles written by the MAP students. We're excited by the success of this collaboration & will also be writing a case study on the process.

There is now a recurring Indianapolis Update on the newly minted GLAM Newsletter. If you'd like to subscribe to the GLAM newsletter, you can do so here. Thanks! And let me know if you have any questions! HstryQT (talk) 17:47, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

the only difference is that it is combined plus technically it is the first release so shouldn't it be listed?Mtlv0 (talk) 05:26, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Well what is meant by Italian itunes edition rather than Itunes edition is that Watershed was released with 10 tracks only on the italian itunes edition rather than for example, the finnish itunes edition or the polish itunes edition. So what that means also is the italian itunes editon was released before the standard 7 track edition much like the in flames album, a sense of purpose.
