WikiCup 2022 May newsletter

The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  1. New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
  2. Christmas Island AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
  3. Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
  4. Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
  5. Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
  6. United States Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
  7. England Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.

The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hello,

I created a draft Wikipedia page for Sarat Sethi that was rejected. My team and I are working to fix the copy. However, I am trying to add the same picture as before, but it says it cannot be used because it has already been posted. I believe my prior draft was deleted. Do you know why I can't upload the same picture?

Thank you.

-Allison — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aferralli (talkcontribs) 16:37, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

@Aferralli: I believe you are taking about the following file: File:Sarat Sethi(87).jpg. The picture itself seems not to have been deleted, so you could insert it into your new draft by copying the file name from the top of the file page. Best, Modussiccandi (talk) 07:46, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
@Modussiccandi, thank you. So can I attach it by using the thumbnail? I am a bit confused on what you mean by copying the file name from the file page. Aferralli (talk) 12:34, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
@Aferralli: yes, copying the thumbnail could be one possibility. When I wrote "copying the file name", I was thinking of the infobox template, which has a field where you can fill in the file name to display the picture as the article's lead image. Modussiccandi (talk) 12:37, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
@Modussiccandi so I take the File:Sarat Sethi(87).jpg and put it in a format like this: {{Infobox person
|name =
|image =
|caption =
...
|website =
}} ? Aferralli (talk) 12:47, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
@Aferralli: my suggestion is to copy the 'infobox person' template into your draft and then insert the file name into the rubric 'image'. This will make the image appear in the infobox. Best, Modussiccandi (talk) 15:33, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
@Modussiccandi can you please send a screenshot of an example? I do not know what you mean by rubric image or where to find the infobox person template. Aferralli (talk) 15:40, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
@Aferralli: I don't think that will be necessary. All you need to do is go to a page that has an infobox with a picture (like Maipina de la Barra) and and click "edit source" on the top bar. This will reveal a straightforward example of what I mean. In your above example, the file name would need to go under |image = (this is what I mean by rubric). The template can be copied from here; there will be more instructions on the page. Best, Modussiccandi (talk) 16:53, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
@Modussiccandi I understand now. Thank you so much for your help. Aferralli (talk) 17:24, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

Sarat Sethi page

Good Morning,

Can you confirm that the Sarat Sethi Wiki page is still being reviewed?

Thanks.

-Allison — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aferralli (talkcontribs) 12:37, 16 May 2022 (UTC)

@Aferralli: I don't think the draft has been submitted and, therefore, is not currently being reviewed. Best, Modussiccandi (talk) 12:45, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
@Modussiccandi I published the page, but I do not see a button to send for review. Where can I find this? Aferralli (talk) 12:48, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
@Aferralli: you can do this by adding {{subst:submit}} to the top of your draft page. Best, Modussiccandi (talk) 13:20, 16 May 2022 (UTC)

Neelan K. Sekar page

Hi,

I have updated substantial sources/references for the page Neelan K. Sekar, can you guide me in the process? AvRam (talk) 08:13, 22 May 2022 (UTC)

@ஆனந்த் ராம்: thank you for reaching out. In general, I would recommend that you find more sources that are independent of the subject (no interviews and self-published sources). At the moment, there aren't many sources of this kind in the article. As regards notability, I think your subject is notable under WP:ANYBIO for having won a significant award for one of his films. Best, Modussiccandi (talk) 16:05, 22 May 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello Modussiccandi,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 803 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 851 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Requesting Peer Review

Hi sir,

I've submitted this article which i have been editing for a peer review Wikipedia:Peer review/Cobra (2022 film)/archive1

Will you do it for me ? AvRam (talk) 07:05, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

@Wikimama1209: thank you for reaching out. I appreciate your request, but I might not be the right person to ask since I have never written an article on a film. Consider asking at Wikipedia:WikiProject Film, where you should be able to find the right expertise. One tip I gan give you right now (after skimming through the article) is to work on the lead section. At the moment, the lead focuses heavily on the cast to the exclusion of almost everything else. If you read MOS:LEAD, you'll see that the lead is supposed to be a miniature version of the article. This means that the lead should dedicate roughly the same relative amount of space to each topic as the article itself. For example, I would say that about 10% of the body is about the cast, meaning that the lead should also devote about 10% to this topic. Right now, about 90% of the lead covers the cast. It is this imbalance that you need to fix. I hope I have given you some useful pointers. Best and happy editing, Modussiccandi (talk) 08:52, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for taking time and giving some additional tips about lead section.
Will go through about it and develop my article further.
Thanks for your kind response.

The list for change page

I am not clear which part of the page was considered advertising for the page you deleted. The pages listed are all run by volunteers to help Ukrainians. This is a historical movement for peace that I am trying to document. If you can help me to get the important parts out there. I would appreciate it.

The Sonnenfeld Yale List for Change

I am not a part of Yale. I live in San Diego.

thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Grold (talkcontribs) 16:22, 28 May 2022 (UTC)

@Grold: thank you for reaching out about this. When considering whether to delete pages we do not consider whether they are run by volunteers or whether they are considered important. What we look at is whether the articles are phrased in a neutral fashion. I'm afraid your article was written in a blatantly positive way and therefore had to be deleted in accordance with our policy against soapboxing (see WP:SOAPBOX). Langauge like "[t]he brilliance of one professor, combined with the extraordinary talents of a small group of Yale University students.." may not be accepted by Wikipedia. You have to options for what to do with your content. Either you adapt the tone to be neutral and find high-quality, independent sources or you could find a platform other than Wikipedia that will publish it without change. Best, Modussiccandi (talk) 16:31, 28 May 2022 (UTC)
okay, that explains it. I was just overly impressed with what they were doing and it must have come through in my writing. I will make it neutral. There are not a lot of references since this just started a few months ago but I will do what I can to make it more scholarly and then try it again. Thanks for letting me know. Kevin. DYK for Darkness Visible: A Study of Vergil's Aeneid

On 10 June 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Darkness Visible: A Study of Vergil's Aeneid, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Darkness Visible: A Study of Vergil's Aeneid was thought by one reviewer to have "the remarkable qualities of the oracular"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Darkness Visible: A Study of Vergil's Aeneid. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Darkness Visible: A Study of Vergil's Aeneid), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Notice

The article Denis Huseinbasic has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable footballer. Fails GNG, no appearances in fully-pro leagues for national team

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. DYK for Boris Rhein

On 21 June 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Boris Rhein, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Nicky (Chau-Chun) Lu Deletion

Hello. I'm the one that has pretty much composed almost all of the recently deleted page "Nicky (Chau-Chun) Lu." I edited this wikipedia page simply out of respect towards him, in establishing the foundations of the semiconductor industry in Taiwan. I believe it is properly cited, worded, to differentiate it from other commercialized articles on the internet, and I have absolutely zero motive or purpose in commercializing it. None of my wording is similar to anything, as I have translated and reworded everything, from Chinese to English, to make it sound as unbiased and as uncommercialized as possible. I believe there isn't anything wrong in writing about a famous scientist, and I do not think this page should be deleted. Everything has been cited properly, to a certain extent that I have put in too many citations. If it is possible, please revert the change, or send me back the text so I can edit it further, or change anything that you are unhappy with. Thanks. Koreafishnumberone (talk) 01:23, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

@Koreafishnumberone: thank you for getting in touch. Indeed, there is no problem in writing about a famous scientist. It is still possible for a page to be of a promotional nature when the language is so positive as to seem laudatory of the subject. Just having citations doesn't cure all the article's problems. In your case, the article looked basically like a CV, which is something Wikipedia may not host. With that said, I'm willing to send you the content of the deleted page under the condition that you improve its tone before trying to publish it via the Articles for Creation process. It looks like you haven't added an email address to you user data; if you do that (under 'preferences'), I can email you the content of the article. Let me know here once you've added an email address. Best wishes, Modussiccandi (talk) 07:59, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
Hi! Thankyou for the quick response! I do realize the problem in it looking too much like a CV rather than an encyclopedia. To me, my goal in creating the article was to provide every wikipedia user a comfortable and convenient platform in accessing most, if not every, information about this person. I believe the purpose of a encyclopedia is to provide people with the most amount of information, with everything being credible enough, and nothing sounding biased and commercialized. I do really agree with the whole purpose of wikipedia being a platform for unbiased information. I've read through the articles of creation, but wasn't really sure exactly what I should change. If you have time, can you point out what are some places in the article I have written, that may require re-wording or changes, or is simply not suitable for wikipedia? Thankyou! Koreafishnumberone (talk) 08:47, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
I've been referencing the format of the other approved wikipedia webpages, such as pages about Morris Chang and Terry Gou, some other famous engineers and scientists in Taiwan, so I know what are the accepted formats, layouts, and "language" that wikipedia accepts. I personally think throwing a bunch of text into a big chunk of a paragraph is often times messy, and hard to read. As a wikipedia user for years since elementary school, I've noticed this problem a lot. Now as I have time to make some pages, I really would like to make the wikipages I have edited, factual, clean, and easy to read. Is my problem a formatting problem? Or is the content? Thanks! Koreafishnumberone (talk) 08:52, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
@Koreafishnumberone: I would say it's a mixture of formatting and content. We generally prefer prose and the very best articles will have the cast majority of their content in paragraph form. Lists of achievements etc., particularly in biographies, have this CV quality that I mentioned to them; I would try to avoid them. The content is your bigger problem. You need to avoid everything that gives the impression of being biased in favour of the subject. To give you a few examples: including his age in the award section comes across as wanting to show off how young he was when he got these. In the biography section, your language needs to be as factual as possible, which means that things like that pushed the limits of DRAM densities at the time and he made two notable inventions should be toned down. You have convinced me that you aren't here only to promote this person, so I will give you the content of the page in the draft space. But you need to promise that you will submit the the article as a draft and not publish it without it having been reviewed by an AfC reviewer. Can you agree to that? Best, Modussiccandi (talk) 09:17, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
Hi. Yes definitely. I see the problem now. I'll look into more of other wikipages about famous scientists and engineers and see how they word things. Koreafishnumberone (talk) 11:36, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
@Koreafishnumberone: you will now find the content of your article at Draft:Nicky Lu. Once you think you've improved the draft enough, press the 'submit your article for review' button. You'll have noticed that I changed the name of your article to 'Nicky Lu' in the process. I did this because we want article titles to match the shortest, most commonly used name for a given subject. The 'Chau-Chun' part of his name can be explained in the article. Best wishes, Modussiccandi (talk) 12:10, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello Modussiccandi,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 13251 articles, as of 10:00, 23 November 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.

WikiCup 2022 July newsletter

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
  • Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.

Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article nomination, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello Modussiccandi,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.

AfD query

Hi there, thank you again for your comments on my recent ORCP. One thing of note was AfD, so when you get the chance would you mind taking at a look my more recent AfD responses to see if they are less like borderline drive-bys? In practice I'm not thinking of going for RfA for a few months whilst I work on content creation too, but wanted to make sure I'm on the right track with AfD at least. Thanks. -Kj cheetham (talk) 13:33, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

@Kj cheetham: thank you for reaching out. I've taken a look of your last couple of AfD participations. I think your contribution to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Navin J. Manjooran is a good example of what I advocated for in your ORCP (policy-based, early in the process, and concise). If you continue participating in this manner, AfD won't be a stumbling block at a potential RfA. I hope this helps. Feel free to approach me if you ever need advice about the RfA process; I passed mine fairly recently and still have vivid memories of what I did before/during the request. All the best, Modussiccandi (talk) 14:30, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
Modussiccandi Thank you for that, I'm sure I'll be in touch again in due course. :) -Kj cheetham (talk) 15:49, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Zeitenwende speech

On 31 August 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Zeitenwende speech, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced a €100-billion investment in the German armed forces? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Zeitenwende speech. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Zeitenwende speech), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

WikiCup 2022 September newsletter

WikiCup 2022 September newsletter

The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. The judges are Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Thank you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:03, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: I'm glad you enjoy the appearance of Joyce Reynolds on the main page. She was a true pioneer! When I saw the sad news of her passing, I immediately thought that she belonged in the ITN section. All the best, Modussiccandi (talk) 12:23, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
