Wikimedian in Residence BoF at Wikimania 2017
Hello!
My name is David Alves (User:Horadrim~usurped), and I'm an Wikipedian in Residence at RIDC NeuroMat (User:Horadrim). I've reach your contact through the Wikimedian in residence page in Outreach. As you may know, Wikimania 2017 is coming! I am here because, as a fellow WiR, I believe this would be a great opportunity for us to share experiences, discuss difficulties and exchange solutions, creating a community among us capable of supporting in other projects that would benefit from residents. In that sense, I have submitted a proposal of a Birds of a Feather activity to Wikimania that you can check out here. I hope to count with your support in this project and would like to invite you to join us if you participate in Wikimania. In case of any doubts, please feel free to contact me, either in my talk pages or by e-mail at david.alvesoutlook.com.
Thank you very much! Horadrim~usurped (talk) 00:33, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
Attention: WikiProject African diaspora participants
Hello fellow project participants. Not sure how many users are still active as normal Wikipedia editors but felt the need to attempt to get a gauge on who can be called on for help with articles falling under the umbrella of the African diaspora project. According to the project's article table there are over six thousand articles related to the African diaspora; there's not a hundred at FA/GA grade and there's over twelve hundred that are unassessed. With Wikipedia being one of the major information reference points in the world today we should consider this unacceptable. Much work needs to be done on the rating of the importance of articles as well. With more communication amongst participants and a dedication to addressing the articles on the to-do list I believe we can make this WikiProject one of the most well organized and thorough on the site. If you are interested in collaborative work with some of your fellow project members, have certain expertise on any particular subjects, ideals on/about the WikiProject, etc. simply drop your name under the "Project revision" section I've created on the project's talk page and state your intentions and main points of interest in our WikiProject and we can attempt to move forward from there. Hoping to hear from everyone soon! WikiGuy86 (talk) 03:36, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

Copyright issue
Hi Missvain. I recently acted upon this undeletion request, undeleting the page history of Delilah W. Pierce, which was required to be undeleted under copyright, as a source of merged content. As I noted in the undeletion request, based on your response here to Christian75 and then not undeleting the page history, it appears the copyright issue was not understood.
The heart of our copyright licenses is suitable credit to the authors and copyright owners of our content – which is not owned by Wikipedia or the Wikimedia foundation – but by us, the editors who add content. So when content is merged (or copying of any stripe is done: generic copying, splits, translations from foreign language Wikipedia articles, etc.) the requirement is that you leave an edit summary stating what you've done, and providing a hyperlink to the source of the merged content, where the page history is available for credit to the authors. Please see generally Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and specifically here, Wikipedia:Merging#How to merge.
In this case, after merging the content into the target page without attribution in the edit summary, you deleted the source page with the edit summary "deleting after merge into duplicate article", and then recreated is as a redirect, sans its page history. That edit summary essentially flags the issue I'm here about, since it near perfectly describes the creating of a copyright violation. You cannot delete the page history of the source page upon a merge, because its page history, listing the copyright owners, is exactly what must be retained for copyright attribution under our licenses (there is an exception: such a deletion does not create a copyright violation so long as you list all the authors – but this is rarely done and rarely would be easier, unless there was only a very few authors). See also {{R from merge}}, which is added to redirects created upon merges for the chief purpose of flagging "this page's history must not be deleted, because it is where the attribution for the merged content is located".
As noted, since you must provide copyright attribution in the edit summary when you perform the merge, I have repaired the copyright attribution in the merged target in this edit.
I've read this post over and I know: it's a lecture. I'm sorry about that. But copyright is so important; is certainly slippery if you're not immersed in it; and administrators performing deletions need to be aware of these issues. Help with independent review?
Hi,
I noticed that you previously added to the Laura Alber article. I actually just did a re-draft to turn the stub into a full article. However, I have a conflict of interest as a paid consultant. So, under Wikipedia policy WP:COI, I need someone independent to review the suggested re-draft and approve/edit it, rather than just make the changes myself.
Since you seem to have an interest in women in business, I thought you might volunteer yourself? :) I am a pretty experienced Wikipedia editor, and tried to write this article like any other, so I think it won't take too much of of your time.
The draft is here: Talk:Laura_J._Alber
If you have time, I'd be appreciative.
Thanks, Hello I'm writing an article about Actor and Model william Deatley i need help placing my references so its not deleted.

Nisha adhikari controversy
You are violating WP:POV by enforcing your own point of view of neutrality in this article. Enough credible sources have been provided for the controversy that this person was involved in and a simple google is enough to show tons of references supporting this. So please stop vandalizing this page without sufficient counter references. Also, the video of the incident itself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlAxOS8lDgY Any nepali understanding user will attest to the controversy. Revert immediately or face actions as i am sure to list your actions to the admin noticeboard.1NepalPatriot (talk) 16:50, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
- Dear User:1NepalPatriot. I actually am not vandalizing the page. I am an Administrator and I simply reverted the non-neutral and poorly cited comments by an anonymous editor. We try to avoid using words like "controversial figure" when describing subjects and the sources utilized were not high quality journalism. It is acceptable to mention that she has had conflicts with that actress, however, we should avoid writing "She's a controversial figure" unless that has been documented in say reliable secondary sources and even then, it should be used perhaps as a quote (i.e. The Himalayan Times has described her as "controversial" due to her physical and verbal confrontations with other Nepali actors.") Has this fight been covered by the Himalayan Times, Nepali Times or Kathmandu Post? Or similar news organizations? We need to make sure that those are the types of sources are used as opposed TMZ-style websites. Thanks for your passion regarding the subject, and please check the edit history - I am an Admin, so I hope you will assume good faith with my edits. I actually met her and took the photograph of in the infobox, as one of my best friends is Nepali (and my Sherpa name is Mingma, as I was born on Tuesday!). Cheers! Missvain (talk) 17:23, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
- 1. Saying you met her is immediately pointing against you applying bias in editing this article so my suggestion for you would be to refrain from editing this particular article. 2. Nisha adhikari does not qualify as WP:Notable so national dailies covering a simple actress is out of question. 3. The youtube video is directly posted by Nagariknews which is one of the most popular news agencies of Nepal so there you go for credibility. 4. Perhaps you should have rephrased the wordings in the controversy section than completely removing it. 1NepalPatriot (talk) 18:24, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

Hi Missvain, I recently created this account but have edited anonymously a few times in the past. I am trying to refine a page about a living architect, which has been tagged for promotional language - Sheila Sri Prakash. She has been recognized as the first woman architect in india to independently start her own office and is an alumnus of the college where I am studying my BArch. We have a student club for women students in architecture and we discuss topics that are important for us to succeed in our profession. We frequently discuss her work, and we also study examples of her approach to architecture. I have also attended one guest lecture by her on campus last year. Some how her article appears to be under controversy but she seems like a very kind and humble person. She interacted with all students and gave us a lot of help. This controversy may be due to a lot of jealousy for her awards and because of bias against women leaders in general. Many members of the women in my architecture student club are having strong feeling about supporting our role model and would like to help remedy this article. Would you kindly help guide us and give us your advice about how we can improve it to remove the tags for deletion/unreliable sources/promotional language? Thank you for your help in advance OrangeFig52 (talk) 04:55, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

When you accept drafts, especially if you're accepting dozens in a row, it would be very helpful if you made sure to give them a rating (stub/start/etc) and tag with relevant WikiProjects. The reason AFCH gives you the option is that it saves other people a lot of time and effort further down the road (even if it's just yourself). Thanks. Primefac (talk) 03:48, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

Not sure if you have any interest in this, but I've created some new stubs for sculptures in the National Statuary Hall Collection. It'd be nice to have a complete set of articles, but I'm especially hoping to see new stubs for statues of women and indigenous people. San Francisco Bay Area re-write
Hi there, I saw that you recently put yourself up as a member of the Bay Area taskforce. I am currently undergoing the huge task of re-doing the Bay Area article, that is, citing all sources, restructuring the page to match the organizational norms of GA and FA cities and regions, and getting rid of unsourceable passages and fluff. I understand that you are busy, but if you get the chance, any contribution or help to my sandbox would be appreciated. Thank you! --haha169 (talk) 14:17, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
Montana fires
Hey, saw you created a couple of wildfire articles. The ones that are making the most local news are the ones where there are evacuation orders or threats to structures, and right now that's the Strawberry Fire (Montana) that just blew up big time yesterday, expanding by another 1000 acres. (Not to be confused with the one last year in Nevada). Some sources call it the Strawberry Creek Fire, but not Inciweb... anyway, sources include [1], [2]. The other ones are all the ones up the Kootenai by Libby, Not sure if the Highway 200 Complex includes or excludes the others burning nearby such as Gibralter Ridge or not. Plenty of redlinks at 2017 Montana wildfires, and any help always appreciated! (I know, I could do more, will try, but ... life... ) Montanabw(talk) 01:07, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hey, thanks so much for stopping by with the tips. It's hard to keep track - I live in California and tend to write about CA wildfires but occasionally stumble across interesting one's in other states. I'll do my best to help with those red links and I'll look into the Strawberry Fire! :) Missvain (talk) 01:59, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
- The big one left in Montana that doesn't have an article is probably the Highway 200 Complex, still redlinked. That one took out people's houses. Luckily, our widldfire season is slowing down, two feet of snow in the mountains helped! Montanabw(talk) 17:42, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

Tom Petty
Why would you delete his birthday, and stuff, and just have 1950-2017? Articles have their birthdate, and date of death, October 20, 1950 - October 2, 2017. Mind telling me why you did that? P.J. (talk) 04:38, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hi P.J. and thanks for stopping by my talk page. I actually have never had someone reprimand me in 11 years for only including death years, not detailed dates, in a lede, in any article I've edited. I learn something new every day and clearly need to take a refresher course of WP:MOS! A shame that we lost such a great musician tonight. I only try to do my part to contribute the best I can! Cheers and thanks for editing Wikipedia. Missvain (talk) 04:48, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
- Actually...I just read the MOS - Interesting to see what the MOS says about this: [3]. "Birth and death dates are important information about the person being described, but if they are also mentioned in the body, the vital year range (in brackets after the person's full name) may be sufficient to provide context." Looks like it isn't necessarily required to have the full date with day and year if it is mentioned in the body of the article, which is generally how I write biographies on Wikipedia. And it turns out the Tom Petty article has his full birth and death date (the latter I added) in the body of the article, so it's only necessary to have the year in the lede and I suppose it's up to an individual editor's own opinion or decision, so it looks like I wasn't wrong in my action after all. :) Guess we both learned something today! Date formats in citations
I'm afraid that I have to call attention to a minor problem with some of your recent edits to articles on US politicians, e.g. Deb Fischer and Ben Sasse, who're on my watchlist. When adding citations, you've used the DMY date format (4 July 1776). This was not consistent with the prevailing date format used in either article: in Fischer, yyyy-mm-dd (1776-07-04); in Sasse, MDY (July 4, 1776). Per MOS:DATEUNIFY, publication dates, and access/archive dates in citations should all use the same format.
DMY should generally be avoided in articles on American subjects, since per MOS:DATETIES, dates used in most articles with a strong connection to the US should use MDY. Unfortunately, until relatively recently the examples in the documentation at Template:Cite web all used DMY, which may have given some editors the mistaken impression that it was WP's house style. Ammodramus (talk) 12:40, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
- I use whatever is in the citation template. It fills it in automatically. Strange... THanks. Missvain (talk) 16:01, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
- I think the citation template only echoes the date that one types into it; so if I type "accessdate=4 July 1776" within the template, it puts "Retrieved 4 July 1776" in the citation; if I type "accessdate=July 4, 1776", I get back "Retrieved July 4, 1776"; likewise, if I type "accessdate=1776-07-04", that's the date format that appears in the citation. The template doesn't decide on a date format; it accepts whatever the editor puts into it. Which only makes sense: for the template to impose a format, it'd have to decide whether and how an article was governed by MOS:RETAIN or MOS:DATETIES, which would be an impressive bit of machine learning. Ammodramus (talk) 02:19, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
- There is some recognition when a date is put in. For example, if you put in "4th July 1776" it would ask you to check the date format. It also throws a fit if you do "10-10-2010" because it assume you don't know whether it's dmy or mdy. ISO standard at 1776-07-04 is July 4 every time because that's how standard ISO works. In other words, unless you're doing something very odd, you'll at least have the bare minimum of information required to figure out the date.
- Also, when using the refToolbar, it puts it in dmy. So... carry on Missvain. Primefac (talk) 11:38, 6 October 2017 (UTC) (talk page stalker)

Tigertown speedy deletion
Hi Missvain. I was in the midst of reviewing Tigertown when you deleted it, and I'm not sure it qualified for speedy deletion (although AfD might be another story). This is a band that has released three albums (Lonely Cities, Papernote, and Warriors) on an Atlantic Records imprint, had coverage in Rolling Stone Australia, and had non-trivial coverage of an international tour in Music Times. --Ahecht (TALK

You are invited to join the global online Wikipedia Asian Art Month (sign up here!), running November 1-30. As part of Wikipedia:Wikipedia Asian Month, there will be Met postcards for all who participate, and art books as grand prizes. Let me know if you have questions, or need help finding a good topic and matching images from the Met CC0 collections release.--Pharos (talk) 16:17, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
