Edits to Daniel G. Reid
I was in the middle of cleaning the article and adding new citations. I lost everything because of your two small edits that had been opened while I was actively editing. I appreciate you were trying to help and clean this up but it added a lot of frustration on my end. Please be mindful if you see the error message about it being edited. Jooojay (talk) 09:22, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
- There was no error message Jooojay. The only way to avoid what happened is to not put the bare url tag on an article until you are completely done editing it. I am sorry that you had to rework things but I can't tell you how many times that has happened to me over the years. Regards. MarnetteD|Talk 17:21, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
WP 20
Happy Wikipedia 20, - proud of a little bit on the Main page today, and 5 years ago, and 10 years ago, look: create a new style - revive - complete! I sang in the revival mentioned. I kept a promise to self and just nominated BWV 1 for FAC. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:53, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for this message Gerda and a belated Happy New Year. Many congrats on this main page contribution and the previous ones as well. Hmmm every five years brings to mind the extraordinary documentary Up series directed (except for the first one) by Michael Apted. Sadly, he died last week. He directed a remarkably wide range of films and I will miss him. Best regards and have a nice weekend. MarnetteD|Talk 23:41, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you, and today's Main page has a pic I took and a pointer at Osian Ellis who died, - couldn't believe he had no article in German. Changed of course. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:47, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
- Nice meeting you on the great actor's page. You vs. an IP: I knew where I stood, with little time to explore. I wish he'd return to his real name. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:37, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

- Today: see Vision pictured (not by me), with Arik Brauer in the news, so art in Vienna twice --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:03, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

- I agree. I never heard of him until he appeared in our Recent deaths. When I see someone speaking German there, or making music, I do what I can, - it's a field where you find great help from others - in this case Grimes2 - and rewarding: immediate attention. Amazing what the mentioning of just the name without context does for page views. - I wrote Ringturm because it was a red link for another (Serbian-)Austrian artist, Robert Hammerstiel, - great video at the end, but in German. Just to watch him talk may be worth it. - Tomorrow: Jerome Kohl, especially sad, - I never heard him talk, but we exchanged a lot here. He was the forth user I met here, and told me that a source was wrong, - a lesson for life ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:40, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
- Gosh I saw JK's name often but did not have his talk page on my watchlist so I completely missed his passing. Very sad news. The 'pedia is a lesser place with all these editors deaths. Thanks for all the other links as well Gerda. MarnetteD|Talk 17:47, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
- Agree again. We chatted about In Freundschaft, played in a concert dedicated to a friend of mine. Did you see his wonderful comment, after Stockhausen had commented that one's death and died very soon afterwards? - I just learned the word "solace" (for a DYK, of all places) - that comment gave me solace then. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:05, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

Pic of Fourth Doctor here previously. Thank you. ane more thing, are you an Otaku? Starkiryu64 (talk) 23:58, 19 January 2021 (UTC) |
- You are welcome Starkiryu64. While I enjoy anime and manga I would not consider myself an Otaku. As a youngster I watched shows like Gigantor, Prince Planet and Marine Boy but didn't know they were called anime :-) I am glad that you have such a passion for this story telling art form. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 01:55, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
But Gigantor, Prince Planet, and Marine Boy was anime but was heavily Americanized for American markets. For example, Gigantor was an adaptation of Tetsujin 28-go, and Marine Boy was Undersea Boy Marine. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Starkiryu64 (talk • contribs) 02:03, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

Happy inauguration day
Dear Michael,
I hope you are keeping well.
A month early for the snowdrops, but tempus fugit ...
Wishing for a Happy inauguration day.

Gareth Griffith-Jones (contribs) (talk) 20:31, 20 January 2021 (UTC)- I must have missed that. Mind enlightening me as to why the | birth_name =
field of Template:Infobox person would be deprecated? I see no such mention in the documentation... RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 23:12, 23 January 2021 (UTC)
- The documentation states "only use if different from name" and it is meant for situations like Michael Caine or Kirk Douglas where the birth name is completely different. MarnetteD|Talk 00:00, 24 January 2021 (UTC)

Thank you, - I got Libuše Domanínská there yesterday, - fun to make a bio from puzzle pieces in four languages, and no idea why google serves a Czech radio feature only in Spanish (at least to me). Continuing from above: same wish. Out of curiosity: do you happen to know how the myth came into the world that the unspeakable has to "summarize" anything, - life, career, content? - I stay away, gives me much more time for the above-mentioned bios. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:51, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

- No problem with a day later when dealing with a problem from 2005 ;) - I met the conflict in 2013, when we wanted to introduce {{infobox opera}} because see Talk:Das Liebesverbot#Infobox, faced strong opposition, one of my friends called for arbitration, arbitration supported the opposition (short version). I simply liked Carmen better the way it is than what I can't even show you any more because the alternative was just deleted. My spirits could be high. But seeing people whom I respect loosing their time and spirits over a phantom - the concept that the little box should summarize the content - and seeing people hurting each other for a phantom ... - my spirits would be higher still if they'd end fighting. - Also I can't help secretly thinking that for Beethoven, the box is the clearer summary ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:49, 6 February 2021 (UTC)

The Doctor
What Doctor do you like the most. To me, it's the Fourth Doctor and the Seventh Doctor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Starkiryu64 (talk • contribs) 03:27, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi again Starkiryu64. When I first discovered the show back in 1981 Tom's episodes were the ones our PBS station was airing. His performance was fascinating and he will always be near and dear to my heart. I admired Pat Troughton as an actor before I knew about DW so when I learned that he had been the Second Doctor I was impressed. When I finally got to see his stories I enjoyed what he brought to the role. I was very happy to meet him (even though it was brief) at the 20th-anniversary convention held in Chicago in November of 1983. When Matt Smith became the Eleventh Doctor I didn't know what to expect since I had only seen him in the two Sally Lockhart stories adapted for television. I found his performance to be great fun. His Doctor is completely unpredictable in how he is going to react to and deal with a given situation. IMO that is a trait that he shares with Tom. Enjoy your weekend! - The Trial of a Time Lord - hmph. I got annoyed with it at the time, right from the start (do the Time Lords not have a double jeopardy law?). It was about eleven episodes too long, full of plot holes and other rubbish; and Colin Baker had not improved since the previous season. No wonder Michael Grade pulled the plug again. I can only pick out two Sixth Doctor stories as worth watching - The Mark of the Rani and Revelation of the Daleks, being the best (mainly because of their supporting characters) of a bad bunch. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:12, 6 February 2021 (UTC)

How do you know about ´´An Unearthly Child´´? Did the chameleon circuit break in the serial? Starkiryu64 (talk) 03:00, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
- The very first episode is amazing S. I've seen it many times and I think it stands up well. One thing I've always found interesting is that Hartnell's Doctor doesn't appear until several minutes into the episode. In episode two "The Cave of Skulls" the Doctor is perplexed that the Tardis hasn't changed shape and says "It's still a police box. Why hasn't it changed? Dear, dear, how very disturbing" There is more info about it here TARDIS#Exterior for you to enjoy. It is worth noting that the first time the term chameleon circuit was used onscreen is in Logopolis although it had been used a few years earlier in the novelisation of Terror of the Autons. Cheers. Refill2
Hi, MarnetteD. Refill2 can't fix PDFs when they are references. Since not fixing them bugs me... do you have any suggestions or procedures for them? Thank you in advance. RJFJR (talk) 17:26, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
- TGIF RJFJR. There is some good news regarding formatting PDFds. Reflinks has recently been resurrected. It can format many - though not all - PDFs. It will also format several other urls that refill skips. You do have to click on "interactive" in the upper left corner and then click "all unformatted links" before copy pasting the article title in the page title field. Another benefit is that it will put PDFs into an editing field so even if it doesn't fix them they are ready for manual formatting. Now if you haven't used it before it takes a little getting used to but I think you will get the hang of it fairly quickly. As always I'll try to help with any questions that come up. Best regards. My comments:
- just plain wrong. I've seen this sort of markup a lot lately, and I don't know how it gets there. I welcome your partnership in helping to prevent it.
- The word "The" should be capitalized.
- Anything on Facebook not coming from the corporation itself should use "via" and it's probably best to call it simply "Facebook", viz.
|via=Facebook

- Thanks for your post Anomalocaris. I know weird things like this can happen but I couldn't tell you why. I see you have already posted at the VPT so I hope someone there will be able to explain it to help us out. Regards. MarnetteD|Talk 23:27, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks to PrimeHunter I've learned it's the visual editor citation tool. Please scrutinize the results of the visual editor citation tool, and among other things, if you see innerHTML, don't accept the results! —Anomalocaris (talk) 00:43, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the update Anomalocaris. MarnetteD|Talk 02:14, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
9/11
Have you ever heard of the 9/11/01. Because this year is 2021. Starkiryu64 (talk) 15:47, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
- Yes Starkiryu64. I lived through the event and the world has not been the same since. Regards. MarnetteD|Talk 20:14, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
you're right D, I was scared about that event at school, even though I wasn't born before 2001. Starkiryu64 (talk) 20:46, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
Hello. Starkiryu64 (talk) 17:59, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Starkiryu64. I hope you are well. It has been so cold here that I had trouble with my fingers. Fortunately you are at least 50 years away from having to deal with that :-) Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk 18:29, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
So are you really shock when the event happens? Starkiryu64 (talk) 18:53, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
- Very much so Starkiryu64. As I watched it on TV I knew it was meant that things were never going to be the same again. MarnetteD|Talk 20:12, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
Sorry about that. I know that, and I knew it as soon as I did it, and ran it through Reflinks, but then got distracted and forgot to go back and fix it. Onel5969 TT me 00:05, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
- No worries at all Onel5969. I know you are hep to the jive :-) Cheers from chilly Colorado. MarnetteD|Talk 01:49, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
CSD-tagged Categories
Hello, MarnetteD,
I see you've CSD-tagged a few categories that were created by a blocked or banned editor. Unfortunately, categories can't just be deleted like an article, file or template since all of the pages in the categories will still be tagged with that category. I believe you can report them at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working and a bot will take care both of the category deletion and the untagging of all of the pages in the tagged categories. Some of the regular CFD admins like Good Olfactory and Fayenatic london might be more up-to-date on the details here than I am. Liz Read! Talk! 01:02, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you Liz. It has been a while (two+ years) since I saw Censorscribe pop up. I'm sure dealing with things have changed since the last time. I may not be able to get to them right away. You might have seen that several of them were small cats as well. If GO or Fl have any pointers to add that will be appreciated. MarnetteD|Talk 01:24, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
- I haven't gone through all the category edits, but it seems to me that some which you have undone were actually beneficial and IMHO should be reinstated, e.g. [1]. In that case I have proposed a merger anyway, and that reversion can be re-added afterwards as part of checking the merge. Do ping me if you would like help with others. – Fayenatic London 22:49, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for your post Fayenatic london. Whenever I use a {{Db-g5}} I have no problem if other editors think the page/category/template can be useful. If you've bumped into CensoredScribe's editing before you'll know they like creating small cats (miniscule at times) so the cleanup can be fairly quick. I've glanced at the current thread at the VPT and it made me wonder if a page like Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Holding cell would be useful for cleaning up categories as well. Regards. A barnstar for you!
The Working Wikipedian's Barnstar | |
Thank you for fixing the source referencing in my Nationality, religion, and language data for the provinces of Thailand article! For this, you get this barnstar! Futurist110 (talk) 07:24, 21 February 2021 (UTC) |
- You are welcome Futurist110 and congrats on your work on the article. MarnetteD|Talk 19:08, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you very much, MarnetteD! Also, minor question, but was the deletion of some of the data for Surin province in this edit accidental on your part?: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nationality,_religion,_and_language_data_for_the_provinces_of_Thailand&diff=1007966020&oldid=1007964913 For what it's worth, don't worry, I already put the removed data for Surin province back in that part of the table, but I'm still wonder if this data deletion was accidental on your part. I suspect that it was, but I just want to make sure. Futurist110 (talk) 22:19, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
- Ah rats. I missed that Futurist110. I had a copy paste glitch happen and thought I had fixed but obviously hadn't :-( I am glad you caught it. If you want to take this award back I will understand. Regards. MarnetteD|Talk 22:29, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
- I really don't see the point of taking an award back for an honest mistake on your own part. So, you can certainly keep this award! Please enjoy! :) After all, we all make mistakes from time to time and thus should NOT be punished for these mistakes! :) Futurist110 (talk) 23:13, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks Futurist110. Enjoy your week. MarnetteD|Talk 23:55, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks, you too, MarnetteD! :) Also, Yeah, the damage that you did to my article was small and easily reversible, so NO permanent damage and NO permanent harm done! :) Futurist110 (talk) 00:36, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
I do apologize for asking, but out of sheer curiosity--what exactly did this copy paste glitch consist of? I'm just curious is all. Futurist110 (talk) 03:02, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
- Futurist110 (going off memory) as I did the - hold left click - drag cursor to highlight - cut - the part that you had to replace got caught up in that. I went into the edit history to try and find what I had erased but missed the important bit. I may not have the sequence exactly in order on this but its close. MarnetteD|Talk 05:04, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
- As I think about it there may have been some pasting over the top of the line that added to the problem as well. I'm just not sure anymore. MarnetteD|Talk 05:17, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you. Futurist110 (talk) 05:18, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
- BTW, just how long did it take you to properly source my article? Futurist110 (talk) 02:26, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
- I had to run refill a few times to get all of the bare urls and some of those still had to be adjusted manually Futurist110. As I look at the edit history it looks like it was just under half an hour. MarnetteD|Talk 03:22, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
