I am sorry about the image I added. I thought I had the correct rationale but I guess not. Didn't mean to cause any trouble. Coingeek (talk) 01:47, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

No need to apologize Coingeek. This kind of thing happens a lot. You did, after all, properly attribute the image and did everything else right, which is more than some people uploading files bother to do. It's just images attributed to sources like Getty Images can be particularly troublesome to use the way Wikipedia is set up. It's possible Barstool Sports paid a license fee to use it their article, but Wikipedia doesn't really do that. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:58, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

Fair use image

It’s public domain, I decided to do that. See Template:Not actually fair use. Kierandude (talk) 13:57, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

And also see File:Battle of Site LB-1.png. I added the template just so you know. Kierandude (talk) 13:58, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
I think you might want to take a look at Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is Not and perhaps Wikipedia:Guidance for younger editors for reference. You seem to have mistaken Wikipedia for some kind of free web host where you can work on your "fiction". As posted on your user talk page, I've started a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#User:Kierandude and asked a Wikipdia administrator to take a look at your contributions and assess them. You're welcome to participate in that discussion if you want to clarify things. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:01, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

Nori Bunasawa

Hi, Following on from the deletion of this article at AfD [1], just wondering if you were aware that user DN27ND has recreated the article in their sandbox. My assumption is that that this wouldn't necessarily be contrary to policy (e.g. if the user was going to rework the article) but in this case the user had of course been banned from editing the previous article. Not sure if there is an issue here, but copying in user:Star Mississippi who dispensed the previous block. Axad12 (talk) 13:54, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

@Axad12: I did notice the draft. It seems to be pretty much the same thing that was deleted per AfD with a few new sources added (none of which seem to address the issues raised in the AfD, though). Since I'm not an admin, I don't know how the page-block for "Nori Bunasawa" applies in this case, but the other concerns about COI, SPI and lack of Wikipedia notability would still seem to be pertinent. I guess as long as the creator doesn't try to move the sandbox back to the mainspace, then perhaps they can continue trying to improve it since a page-block isn't necessarily a WP:TOPICBAN. If they do try to move it back, though, it probably would be eligible for speedy deletion per WP:G4 unless it's completely different. In addition, any attempt to move the page back the mainspace themselves probably would lead to further sanction. Such an attempt could be considered WP:GAMING since they would probably need to do so under a different article name or using a different user account (which would be a problem per WP:SOCK or WP:MEAT). If the user sandbox draft they're currently working on eventually becomes such an improvement over what was deleted, they probably would need to first request their page-block be rescinded and then next (maybe) make a WP:DRV for a re-assessment of the AfD. They would also likely need to submit their draft to AfC for review, and not try to self-review like they did before. The creator never commented in the ANI dicussion about their behavior, but they were notified of it. I'd imagine any repeat of that behavior would lead to an administrator quickly stepping in and putting an end to it once and for all. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:34, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
Yes, those are broadly speaking my own thoughts too. The draft actually seems to have been significantly reworked since my previous post (although I've not looked at whether that reworking changes much in the broader sense).
I'd like to assume good faith here, however the way the article was previously introduced to mainspace does not inspire confidence. Hopefully the editor has taken on board that there was a strong community consensus against many aspects in relation to that article (and their maverick approach to notability and sourcing) and will try to play things by the book from here on. As you say, at this point that is their only chance of achieving what they are trying to do.
Thanks for your thoughts... Axad12 (talk) 06:51, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
Actually, I say reworked, but perhaps more accurate to say that a shorter (and better looking) version exists here: [2]. Axad12 (talk) 06:55, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
The version you linked to above is definitely shorter and filled with less fluff, but it seems to be about another person. Even with respect to that draft, though, the main argument for Wikipedia notability seems to be WP:INHERITED. Whether that draft gets submitted to AfC remains to be see, but at least that individual appears to have been a university president, won multiple medals at World Judo Championships from 1967 to 1973, and also received commendation from the Japanese government which seems way more important in terms of Wikipedia notability that who his students might've been. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:16, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
Yes, apologies. A very silly mistake on my part.
I was too tied up with the idea that the editor was an SPA, and had forgotten his previous comment that he had intended to create further articles for other obscure individuals whom he has contacted personally in an attempt to be their Wikipedia biographer. (Can't find the diff for that comment, but I'm sure you recall it).
We shall have to see how things progress... Axad12 (talk) 08:37, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
Sorry digging out and catching up from some time away. Please let me know if any action is still needed on my end. Star Mississippi 11:55, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
Hi Star Mississippi. The draft article is still sitting in the user's sandbox. If they attempt to implement it into mainspace then either myself of Marchjuly will be in touch.
Many thanks. Axad12 (talk) 12:08, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
Perfect, thanks. Will respond as soon as I'm able given some travel. Star Mississippi 12:13, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

Hi. Please could you kindly explain to me why the above was deleted? it was tagged and deleted quickly at night (I am on UK time) so I cannot examine the filepage for faults. Was there something wrong with the photo, or the source, or the markup, or was something missing from the page? I have realised that the image may have had some writing down one side, but I can crop off that writing and re-upload, if required. Or would it be OK if I create a new image file page with a different image of the same man? I have created many of these non-free file pages, and so far there has rarely been any problem. Storye book (talk) 09:32, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

Update. I have now uploaded a different image of the same man, on a new filepage: File:Kristof Nel (3a).jpg. But I would still like to know what was wrong with the previous one. Storye book (talk) 09:53, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
The deleted file was sourced/attributed to Getty Images and such images are pretty much never allowed per WP:F7 and item 7 of WP:NFC#UUI. The administrator who deleted the file is named Fastily and you can ask them about the image if you feel it was deleted in error. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:08, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for letting me know. Storye book (talk) 15:14, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

Starting a draft

I'm not really sure how to open a draft space to write an article before I copy it to regular wiki. I have on occasion used my user page, but I usually delete afterwards. -- Dcw2003 (talk) 15:01, 21 August 2024 (UTC)

@Dcw2003: There are essentially two types of drafts and you can find out more information about each at Wikipedia:Drafts and Help:Userspace drafts. You can and probably should until you've got more experience at article creation also use Wikipedia:Articles for creation (AfC) when you want to create a new article. Users aren't required to use AfC for article creation, but it's recommended for newer users because it allow their work to be reviewed by others more familiar with Wikipedia's various policies and guidelines, particuarly Wikipedia:Notability. Once a new article is added to the mainspace, it's supposed to eventually be reviewed by the Wikipedia:New pages patrol, but anyone can, in principle, "assess" it to see whether they think it's in accordance with relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines. New articles that are believed to not be in accordance with these policies and guidelines often end up being nominated or otherwise tagged for Wikipedia:Deletion when it's believed they can't be fixed without pretty much a total re-write. Having a draft reviewed and subsequently approved by an AfC reviewer doesn't mean the page will never end up deleted, but it does increase the odds that it won't because AfC reviewers aren't supposed to approve drafts that clearly have no future. An AfC reviewer also knows how to properly Wikipedia:Move a draft to the mainspace and take care of all of the cleanup associated with doing so.
A few other things for reference. You should add your signature at the end of your talk page posts as explained in Wikipedia:Signatures. You should also try to avoid cut-and-paste page moving as much as possible because doing so can create attribution problems and instead "move" the page. Wikipedia's licensing policy requires that all edits be properly attributed, and cut-and-paste page moving can break the chain of attribution. There are exceptions to this (e.g. you shouldn't "move" your primary user page or user talk page to a new "name"), but it most cases drafts are "moved" to a new title when creating a new article. So, another advantage of using the draft namespace or a userspace draft instead of your primary user page to work on drafts is that it makes it much easier to "move" the draft to the mainspace and also preserve the page's history for attribution purposes. -- Marchjuly (talk) 20:49, 21 August 2024 (UTC)

Starting a draft article in the user sandbox, dcw2003, question

I must be dense, and I'm sorry but I'm interested in starting an article without using the article wizard, but using a Special:MyPage/sandbox|user sandbox command. Is user the only variable to change to my username dcw2003, or is MyPage also a variable? I've written over 100 articles and don't want to use the Article Wizard, if thats ok. I'm afraid I still can't figure out what command to use to draft an article in my user sandbox. Can you be more specific? Thanks!!! Thanks again!!! Dcw2003 (talk) 21:16, 21 August 2024 (UTC)

@Dcw2003: I'm not sure I understand your question. If you want to create a userspace draft, the easiest way to do so is to go to the page Help:Userspace draft and follow the instructions given there. In the window "Create a userspace draft" enter the name of the draft you want to create where it says "Name of the article" and then click the gray "Create your new user space draft!" button. A new window/tab should open titled "User:Dcw2003/XXXX" in which "XXXX" is the name you chose for your draft. If you check, Special:Contributions/Dcw2003 after creating the page, you should find a record of you creating the page that contains a link to the new userpace draft. After that, you just edit the page much in the same way you'd edit any other Wikipedia page. There are further details on what to do after you've created a userspace draft found at Wikipedia:So you made a userspace draft, and I suggest you take a look at that page for reference.
Finally, please add your signature to the end of your talk page posts (not the beginning of your posts). There are several ways to do this: you can type four tildes ~~~~ at the very end of your post, or you can click your cursor where you want your signature to go and then click on the "Signature and timestamp" icon (it looks like an "x" and cursive "l") in the "Preview" task bar at the top of the editing window. Either way should work, but you can check by clicking on the "Show preview" button. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:45, 22 August 2024 (UTC)

Dcw2003 (talk) 20:11, 22 August 2024 (UTC)OK, thanks for all your input; I follow all your reasoning. I did all of the Henning article including the current photo being used, so I'll take your advice. (I was planning to follow your advice anyway, a while back)
