Oh, okay then. (shi**y English right there, in the first article) It's just that I really thought for a minute that the family of Päivinen were a bunch of vikings ruling Scandinavia and getting drunk.. :D The name appeared in about 1800s according to my aunt.. but I don't have a clue who made it. The Päivinen vikings may well have existed but I suppose there is little evidence to prove or disprove their history but I could believe it :) Without proper references though it is likely the article will be deleted. I wouldn't have the first clue though, not coming from Finland so your aunt may well be right. But in any case welcome to Wikipedia, I hope you like the place and decide to stay! Don't worry about being new, everyone has to start somewhere and without new people joining like yourself, Wikipedia wouldn't be able to grow and continue as it is doing. Plus your English is excellent!

A tip for you though, as it is common practise on Wikipedia, when you leave messages on other users pages, like mine here, type 4 tildes like this ~~~~ which will sign and date your messages for you. Speedy Deletion of Európa Kiadó

Hi,

I created a page today (Európa Kiadó) you considered unworthy and labeled for speedy deletion. I think I (and not only I) provided ample info as to the worthiness of the page, and I'm okay to provide more (e.g. the page still missing footnotes and external links in English), and although I admit it is impossible for a wikipedia moderator to know everything about the history or culture of small European countries, and therefore it makes sense to question the notability of something thet you aren't supposed to know on well-defined grounds, the page, I'm sure, long needed to be created. I was actually surprised it wasnt there till today. So I'm asking you: when will you remove the label and/or join the discussion page? Anapazapa (talk) 18:48, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Updated map

I just moved to another Hague Convention with an outdated map: Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. Changes needed are in the caption of the infobox and a list of parties (status table here, also here it goes only for Macao/Hong Kong with respect to China). WikiCup 2011 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!

A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. map opinion (apologies for my long message, but please advise!)

Fall: Thank you again for the help with our lizard. I am thinking about getting a full column map for the species distribution in "Painted turtle#Description". This is how a lot of other sites and papers depict it, so I don't think it's too much. And we have 4 subspecies and a lot of granular discussion. Someone in FAC said, he would have to go get a map to follow our text. My first reaction, was that he should own one and should have learned geo in school...but I did not make these sarcastic remarks. And the more I thought about it, an in article good map would be worthwhile. It's not just within Range (although that is where the map would live), but other parts of the article refer to geographies. Think we really justify the big map. (I had been a little resistive of it at first when a colleague suggested it also, I guess from fatigue at how much we have done in that article...but the more I think from a reader point of view, it would be high value content.)

• Would want to show the names of the states and provinces. Do you think they will show? If not, I would like to do postal abbreviation and then put a comment in the legend or caption directing the reader to a list of the abbreviations. (non-ideal but better than nothing.)

• I would also want to show the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee rivers, but not all major rivers (the reason for showing them is they are all referred to in text.

• We would also want to take the chance to really improve some of the depiction of range borders, which are slightly wrong. And show the "blue dot regions" in the Southwest better. There are some small inconsistencies where the current map does not match our text (and text is right, map is wrong). We (article experts) would also want to take the chance to really look over our sources and give the best content. There are conflicting pieces of information, but at this point, we pretty much know which sources are more up to date and more detailed (a lot of the apparant conflicts come from summary sources that gloss over details of the range borders and basically mess up the facts...but we have found the quality, recent sources at detail level.)

No problem. I definitely support the idea of having a full column map to show the species distribution. While the current JPEG images does an ok job, it isn't ideal for resizing in the article. I would suggest creating a SVG map that could be displayed at whatever size is necessary, that shows the entirety of the U.S, I feel the current crop of the map is too tight and makes it hard to judge scale.

While postal abbreivations aren't the ideal solution for state identification, particularly to those unfamiliar with and outside the U.S., I think they are the approach to take as they would certainly show up better. It does also depend on the size of the map but states with longer names and smaller areas could be a problem, so short two character state codes would be a safer option. Marking the key rivers on the map would also add greatly to its value as they would make the map more informative, expanding on the detail of species' distribution.

Remaking the map as an SVG will also enable more detail in the range borders to be defined, more intricate borders could be shown and enalarged by the viewer, something the current JPEG map can't offer. The other advantage of an SVG means it can be easily adapted later on if information on the ranges changes. I would also make the state borders visible as the current map makes it hard to detemrine all the states that are hidden beneath the large blocks of colour. I agree on making the state borders show through. Like you you did that for Hague map. Can you do it for us? With us? Just getting the JPEG map was hard for us (and we did not do it ourselves, found someone to do what we have). So sorry about your health, but happy that we are on the top of the work list. This map will be beautiful and sit in a good article too! I like the composition, especially the colors and transparancy, and the cut.

• Tennessee River is wrong. It connects up to the Ohio. Also, please show the coupla tributaries that reach into the tip of Virginia. (The reason is we talk about the "river basin" and these are considered part of the basin...also we want to discuss the turtles using that whole river to migrate east and north, so the extension to Roanoke area is helpful.) See here. [1] I think we can skip the lakes (they are manmade), maybe skip the Cumberland River. But would show those extensions shooting into the "toe" of southwest Virginia.

• I really like the artistic look of the state letters, but wonder if we should go a little bigger or darker, just for readability (for the over 30 crowd). For CT and RI and DE and such, it is fine to show the letters out in the ocean and put a line segment or whatever, if needed. [EDIT: Actually they're OK, I think, when the map is full size. River letters are still small.

• Also wonder about getting the river captions a little bigger.

• Could I get the Rio Grande and Pecos Rivers as well? (new request) In particular, how they run through New Mexico and Far West Texas (although might as well show the whole Rio Grande to the Gulf).

• Not sure what's going on with the coloring in border areas? Are you trying to show racial mixing (they actually call it that) of the turtles or was that just a glitch where you had a couple layers on top of each other?

• Not sure how you want to handle this, but we have a tiny bit of Mexican turtle territory. Basically two expeditions in the history of man have found the turtles at similar locations about 50-100 miles south of the border, in one river valley only (although I would love to do a followup expedition and search for it more). In terms of the graphics, I'm fine with just showing a little bit of range that is kind of "off the map", or a little bit of Mexico as part of the map you think makes sense graphically. See here for map of the Mexican territory. [2] The turtle is found in that one river called Rio Santa Maria. Don't need to show that river, but of course if it fits...;-)

• I like how you show the Vancouver Island range.

• We will need to work on all the exact boundaries. What is the way to do this? Should we just tell you? Or is there some way for us to adjust? I don't care, just wonder what works.

• Wondering about the use of white for the state borders. In general it looks nice, but for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, sorta confusing (is it a canal or is the the state border, I know, but someone else might not). Not sure the answer, just throwing notes out!

Map Changes

Right I've uploaded a new version over the old one.

• Fixed the Tennessee River and it now connects to the Ohio and has the tributaries you mentioned. In summary what I've changed is...
• Made the State codes easier to read by incresing their size and made them darker. I also moved some into the ocean and used lines to make for easier reading.
• I also increased the size of the river labels and fixed a problem with the way they were displaying.
• Rio Grande and Pecos rivers added
• In regards to the border colouring it was to show racial mixing, overlaying colours were easier to do than cross-hatching though I may try and implement this.
• The range of the Western Painted is sorted, apart from the North-West (Washington, Oregon, Utah etc).
• Added Mexico
• Changed the background of oceans and lake to blue while keeping the state borders white to make them easier to see.
• Also included national borders between the USA, Canada and Mexico.
• And finally I've obviously changed the range distribution, based on Conant and the article, though this still needs some work.

Hopefully things are more on target now, I'm guessing the ranges are going to need adapting as you get more sources but apart from that any other feedback or changes just let me know. Regards, Fallschirmjäger ✉ 23:34, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

It's good progress! Love the NM and M rivers!

• I've got all the text range description redone except western, which is tricky. This is giving me a chance to improve the understanding. Once I get that done, will really get into tweaking the range bordes themselves.
• U.S.-Canadian border in the Great Lakes is incorrect. If you look in Google maps or an atlas will see that it roughly bisects all the lakes except Michigan.
• I'm not crazy about the dashed black line on top of white wrt national borders. Could we do a solid black or grey, of a thicker width?
• (I know I was the one who pushed for it, but) the Tennessee details are too much. Look like hair. Either cut them back to the main 2 or 3 tribs that spike north (preferred) or just go back to ending it at Knoxville like you had done before.TCO (talk) 00:36, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

Defining the species ranges

OK. I have rewritten the whole range section. I understand it inside and out. We just need to put the proper range boundaries in now.

EAST: Basically we should use the map of Conant p.185, scroll up for all the borders for the midland, southern, eastern and intergrades amongst them. (basically all except for the western subspecies, and it's intergrade with midland).

• Add the "hole" in distribition that crosses the toe of Virgina and snakes into Kentucky and NC-TN border.
• Eliminate the big intergrade shown along NC, VA, etc. There are steep mountains there and Conant showing it with no intergrade is more accurate.
• Add the intergrade of southern and eastern in eastern Alabama (it's an important feature as interbreeding is touted as a reason for not classifying southern as separate species).
• From PA on up along the coast, midland and eastern boundaries should match Conant.
• show continuous range through NB (as per Conant) of the EPT.
• clip back some of that Quebec range (north of the St Lawrence), to match Conant.
• lower peninsula of MI should be all midland.

WEST: This will be more of a combo of sources, but then that's what we're providing readers.

• Canada: Our border should match the "dashed line" from page 8 (15 of pdf) map. Note that Manitoba needs to be trimmed back, and also let's show the detail of the intermountain valley populations in BC. Also that the range from AB to BC is not continuous. [3]
• IL, WI, MI UP: match Stebbins [4] p. 68 map.
• MO: southern border, match Stebbins.
• MN, IA, ND, SD, NE, KS, WY are all good!
• MT match Stebbins
• OR: match Stebbins except don't include the questionable dot in the east. Please add the Columbia and Willamette Rivers as named rivers.
• WA: Fill in most of the state. Leave a section in the SE clear, similar to Stebbins (so that it gibes with OR). Also, make the border with BC make sense (the valleys where it's present and mountains where not in BC should kinda match WA, since that border is just a line of lattitude, not topographical.
• CO is almost perfect, but please make the blue dot in the south at NM a little bigger (both for accuracy and to better show, given the state border crossing it.) Also please add the San Juan River and Colorado River as named rivers.
• New Mexico: Add one blue bubble about halfway up the upper Texas panhandle at 34 deg LAT (but in NM,not TX). (per NM reptiles. Also add "River" to the Pecos naming (but leave Rio Grande without that, since Rio is in title and is common usage).
• UT: Add one blue dot in lower south: [5]
• AZ: Move the blue dot up and east: [6] where the two stars are (but single dot is good).
• Mexico: Make the blue dot a little bigger (easier to see) and move it south to that part of the river running kinda NNE. The turtles are not in the basin salt lake as it is too hot, they're a bit further into the mountains (south). Make the river caption same size as the other rivers. I like how we spell out Chihuahua vice a code, but let's make the font same size as the postal abbreviations to the north. Your choice on if we keep or cut the other Mexican state names, but if we keep, they should also be same size.

Righty-o the map is now pretty much done! The only bit I couldn't do was the Canada border because I wasn't able to access that PDF link you provived. Apart from that everything should be ok. Great progress. No worries on the time. We are really converging to a quality product. Appreciate your work and let's put it in for a FP, when we get done, to show it off and give you credit.

• Maine: delete the one little dot of range in far north. (Conant has it, but more recent reports, that I cite, don't.)
• Idaho: fair it in so that the range from Montana to Washington state kinda just crosses over in a swath, not the dip down.
• Canada and Washington state still need a little tweaking, but let me see what I can do to communicate. (Stebbins is old and I trust COSEWIC better, they were commissioned to really look at this issue exactly and make a determination.)

Another map? Easier one.

Would like to show the geography involved with the giant tortoises. Would go into the article in FA on Galapagos tortoise#Taxonomy and also Giant tortoise. No species map complexities. Just want to show the Indian Ocean and Pacific. Madagascar, Mascarenes and Sechelles on one end and then South American and Galapagos on the other. No need to show details of the islands. Just a dot and a name is fine. Only hard part is the sheer distance involved (halfway round the world).

The point of the map is just to show the incredible distance (as well as relative enclosedness of the IO) that makes migration from Mascarenes to Galapagos unlikely. Since it's just conceptual, would like to display it at a relatively small scale (not full width).

The first truly systematic comparison of giant tortoises, which recognised their diversity and geographic restriction, was by Albert Günther of British Museum, in 1875.[9] He identified at least five distinct populations from the Galápagos, and three in the Indian Ocean. This list was expanded by Gunther in 1877 to six from the Galápagos, four from the Seychelles, and four from the Mascarenes. He theorised that the tortoises of the Galápagos and the Indian Ocean were derived from a single ancestral population which spread to the isolated islands by sunken land bridges.[4] This theory was later definitively disproven by the understanding that the Galápagos, Seychelles and Mascarene islands are all of volcanic origin and have risen from the sea in recent geological history; thus, they could not have been linked by land bridges. It is now thought that the Galápagos tortoises descended from a common ancestor from the South American mainland,[28] while those of the Indian Ocean derived from two colonisations from nearby Madagascar – one to the Seychelles, and another to the Mascarenes.[29][30]

I've had a look at the base map and it seems ok to me as its licensed cc-by-sa-3.0. I did add a source for the Mexico map though which I had previously forgotten to do, which is PD so no problems there. In regards to the other map, its done. 1. I definitely don't want to add rivers in general to the map. We would not be showing Willamette, but would show Platte if all we cared about was hydrology. But the point is to show the rivers from the article.

2. What about the state and province names. Maybe he has a point. Looking at it, it looks like they might fit fine. How much work would it be to add those?

I agree about the rivers, there is no need to add rivers that have no significance in terms of the subject of the map, but if there is enough consensus to add additional ones it won't be a problem. It shouldn't be too much work to change the state labeling, most should fit, for the smaller ones I may need to place the labels over the oceans and use lines to point to the corresponding states. • State and province names are a big upgrade. Glad we did that.
• Not sure on the countries, but leave as is, unless we hear a better suggestion. Think reader pretty likely to know countries regardless, but individual states and provinces more an issue.
• Editable text, very kind of you.
• Please don't change the tributaries or other rivers, but think reviewer had a reasonable point to look at the Tennessee where it joins Ohio (is a bit further west). Not sure what the issue is with Columbia, but we should look at that also. (And when looking at Columbia, we should double check the species border itself. Look at the Cosewic map again. Either it was just the Columbia being off, or the species. But someone knowledgable on the province will have a huh factor as also the text talks about following valleys between the mountains. (Again, it may all just be the Columbia being off, but just think we should double check. Wish there was a way, I could help on the work...feel like we all tell the painter what to paint...and then you do all the real work of producing the art!)TCO (talk) 21:34, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Alright no worries. I've reshaped the rivers so they should be looking more accurate now. I also agreed with your nuking of the country labels, afterall most English speaking people are going to know what the US looks like, plus thats what the borders are for. Don't worry I like being the painter, without your help I wouldn't have half a clue, you direct the brush for me on the other side of the Atlantic in the UK! Please make all the states that can be horizontal, horizontal. Don't reduce font size. Leave Vermont, Indiana, and Mississippi angled, but I think all the rest can be made horizontal (go in the water if needed for South Carolina, but would stay onshore and angled for Mississippi). I like how you parrallel the state borders (which are lattitudes) in the west, just make Utah do it too. Let's go out in the water with Nova Scotia as well. TCO (talk) 00:57, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

BC has always been tricky, but let's use this oppty to upgrade it (I sorta knew we needed to). Let's put the rivers down first, and in proper position (here is a map: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c2/Fraser_River_Watershed.png, I don't have a gridded one, sorry). Please add the Fraser, Thompson, Okanagen, and Kootenai. Once we have those in. The bumps of species from east to west (from COSEWIC): first little bump is on the Kootenai, second bump is on the Columbia (should be a little more on top of it, see COSEWIC, move west a tad), third bump is a little weird (should run up the Okanagen then do that sort of angled jag that does not seem to follow a watercourse, but which crosses the Thompson. States that could be made horizontal now have been made so. I know you said to leave Mississippi angled but it didn't seem to look right being the only angled one surroduned by horizontal labels, I think it works ok being offshore, also makes it less crowded and thus a bit easier to read. • Please look at PA (maybe NY too)? Think closer to horizontal would be better.

• For BC, please make the river names a little clearer reading
• Please show the rest of the Kootenai: [10] (skip the Duncan though). Also keep the spelling Kootenai (not Kootenay). It is US English versus Canadian, but we have been making the whole article U.S. English.

  • Columbia bump should only go up about 80% of the way, not all the way to the bend.
  • The long dogleg should go up the Okanagen (I think), and then should definitely only dogleg until it touches the Fraser, not cross over.
  • You may need to make the bumps a little narrower in width, to show this.

WikiCup 2011 February newsletter

So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round. Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.

Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.

Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. Ok matey sorry I've taken a while, its taken a fair amount of time. I got rid of the shadowing and traces of paper from the photo. I also worked from the originial file File:HMS Beagle 1832 longitudinal section.jpg as the later version had been blurred by increasing the resolution too much, so you may notice the new file is smaller but the details are much clearer. Either way the line drawing is much easier to see now, hope this is close to what you were after but if not let me know and I'll try and sort it. Good upgrades! I would have had no clue even what to ask for. One thing I wonder about is either cutting or maybe spreading, the numbered explanations. The issue, we always have with pics, is how long they go down the page in terms of layout. And that is a lot of blank space down there. I like blowing up the size to where the image is viewable without clicking as it is more visually pleasing and as a lot of non-wiki regulars (our readers) don't even know about the click option.TCO (talk) 22:35, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Question on fixing an image

Hi again. You were nice enough to have helped me several times with images in the past, and I was wondering if you might help me with another one. I uploaded this portrait, which for its age, is remarkably well preserved.[13] The only thing amiss is that the original format, when uploaded here, leaves big white patches on either side. Turtles of Texas

Hey TCO, I'd be happy to help. For starters it shouldn't be necessary to make the TX county maps from scratch, as excellent, workable SVG's of each already exist. (see here). I can use these as a starting point and serve as a blank canvas and can add to them whatever is required. Just getting the data for all 254 counties I can see is going to be one mammoth undertaking! While things are still in the planning stage I think it would be wise to consider exactly what species of turtles we intend to map, to be thorough I think it would be best to include all, so sea turtles, land turtle, aquatic, and terrapins and I'm guessing its gonna be a rather long list as TX is a big state. There are about 30 species. It will be a bit of a work project, but I think will make the article "special". Have not seen anyone do this.

Getting the ranges (or calling them, since there will be source variation) will be on me. Maybe if we did something like numbering the counties, it would help for coordination? I am expecting a lot of species in East Texas will just be in sort of a swath there, so could just say " a line east of ...".

I'm not totally hung up on the county-level precision, but was trying to come up with a system of coordinates, so that we could be efficient. Some states (VA, ME) actually have county-level sampling, but I don't know for Texas yet. I was more thinking as a tool for us to draw. Something to make it easy for you to draw the maps once there is a system.

Agreed, the sea turtles, we can just draw as offshore (maybe out to some limit, territorial waters or "economic zone"). They do come on land to nest, but just occasionaly and only penetrating a few yards inland. Would display their range as in ocean. The diamondback terrapin is only found in the row of the couple counties closest to the ocean.

WikiCup 2011 March newsletter

We are half way through round two of the WikiCup, which will end on 28 April. Of the 64 current contestants, 32 will make it through to the next round; the two highest in each pool, and the 16 next highest scorers. At the time of writing, our current overall leader is Hurricanehink (submissions) with 231 points, who leads Pool H. Piotrus (submissions) (Pool G) also has over 200 points, while 9 others (three of whom are in Pool D) have over 100 points. Remember that certain content (specifically, articles/portals included in at least 20 Wikipedias as of 31 December 2010 or articles which are considered "vital") is worth double points if promoted to good or featured status, or if it appears on the main page in the Did You Know column. There were some articles last round which were eligible for double points, but which were not claimed for. For more details, see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring.

A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round three is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! Help with an image

Hi again. You've been most helpful in the past, and I wondered if I might run something by you. I uploaded this image on Commons [16], which I found an extraordinary image (and one of several proposed Confederate flag designs I found at Beinecke). The image was subsequently fiddled with, and it hasn't worked out well (in my opinion). What I was hoping for was to have the back border removed as in this instance [17], while retaining the aged look of the original (as is the case in the diploma). Instead, the original lovely faded color of the original has been replaced by a rather modern-looking garish red. I wonder if you might have a 'go' at this? As always, many thanks! WikiCup 2011 April newsletter

Round 2 of the 2011 WikiCup is over, and the new round will begin on 1 May. Note that any points scored in the interim (that is, for content promoted or reviews completed on 29-30 April) can be claimed in the next round, but please do not start updating your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. Fewer than a quarter of our original contestants remain; 32 enter round 3, and, in two months' time, only 16 will progress to our penultimate round. Casliber (submissions), who led Pool F, was our round champion, with 411 points, while 7 contestants scored between 200 and 300 points. At the other end of the scale, a score of 41 was high enough to reach round 3; more than five times the score required to reach round 2, and competition will no doubt become tighter now we're approaching the later rounds. Those progressing to round 3 were spread fairly evenly across the pools; 4 progressed from each of pools A, B, E and H, while 3 progressed from both pools C and F. Pools D and G were the most successful; each had 5 contestants advancing.

This round saw our first good topic points this year; congratulations to Hurricanehink (submissions) and Nergaal (submissions) who also led pool H and pool B respectively. However, there remain content types for which no points have yet been scored; featured sounds, featured portals and featured topics. In addition to prizes for leaderboard positions, the WikiCup awards other prizes; for instance, last year, a prize was awarded to Candlewicke (submissions) (who has been eliminated) for his work on In The News. For this reason, working on more unusual content could be even more rewarding than usual!

TCO request an image improvement

FS: Could you please brush up this image?

I'm thinking:

• cut the blue at the bottom
• cut the text on the top of the legend and then increase the size of the color labels themselves (they are not readable even full scale).
• move the legend to the right or bottom (so viewer sees image first)
• move the cutout so that it is not taking room so much (at least put it on the right, but maybe put it in Mexico or New Mexico, or something, so it doesn't take image space
• anything else you feel improves the look (just ideas above)

Ok there should be no problems reading it now as after some digging around on the National Atlas site I found the original PDF the image was made from so was able to make an SVG from that. WikiCup 2011 May newsletter

We're half way through round 3 of the 2011 WikiCup. There are currently 32 remaining in the competition, but only 16 will progress to our penultimate round. Casliber (submissions), of pool D, is our overall leader with nearly 200 points, while pools A, B and C are led by Racepacket (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions) and Canada Hky (submissions) respectively. The score required to reach the next round is 35, though this will no doubt go up significantly as the round progresses. We have a good number of high scorers, but also a considerable number who are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. Also, an important note concerning nominations at featured article candidates: if you are nominating content for which you intend to claim WikiCup points, please make this clear in the nomination statement so that the FAC director and his delegates are aware of the fact.

I also removed other irregularities such as the blue spots of colour and reduced the yellow fringing that was present. Looking for help making a new image showing fluorine usage

I have been reading over some of the source references for industrial fluorine usage. It is actually kind of confusing, because for instance CaF2 can be both used directly or be a source material for HF or F2. I think this is a case where a graphical representation would be very powerful. Was thinking of basically a flow diagram, left to right (probably displayed full width) from minerals to intermediates to uses. Obviously the major ones only. Not sure how to display the quantities, maybe have the arrows/boxes size dependant on F mass? Or perhaps just list the number. but in any case, even just showing the "what leads to what" could be helpful. I think with the encylopedic content (important topic), with the "why a picture helps understand" and then with some work on most clean and functional graphic, we could get it to FP, pretty easy.

Not something I would delay the F FAC over, just something to add regardless.

Thoughts?

I can get started by dummying out the amounts and order and reference(s) (will do a little spreadsheet). If you want, I can throw something simple on Powerpoint together, and then we can play with it to clean it up visually or to think how to show the content most easily.

Hey TCO of course I'll help out. It defiantly sounds like an image will be useful in illustrating Fluorine's usage. Some kind of flowchart does sound like it would suit best. You haven't necessarily got to put a ppt together but it could help, as I'm rather unfamiliar with the topic, and chemistry related stuff in general. fluorine images and FAC

Hey FS, Fluorine failed FAC (which I agree with, great article but just needs a lot more polishing). Gives us more time to work on various aspects of that article, probably looking to be back in FAC in mid-August (when nominator says he wants to take it back).

I am going to go to down on all aspects of the article, but FYI, I recently looked at "Oxygen" and it is stunning as an element FA. In addition to smoother writing and more content, it has a lot of appealing images. Just something to keep in mind as we work on Fluorine pictures. I will probably be expanding length anyway, which will allow for more space for images (more like Painted turtle).

P.s. I moved the liquid F to the infobox and cut the gas tube picture, that had concerns with non-free-ness as well as questions about its accuracy as well.TCO (talk) 22:42, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

ozone hole cleanup help

FS: Will you please work your magic on this? I am thinking:

• make the years 50-100% bigger (so can be read in article view)
• stretch the scale further accross the bottom and make the numbers bigger, as with the years
• probably cut a couple of the frames (you think?) just to make it cleaner. thinking 1994 and 2040 could go.
• anything else you want.

Just a thought. I've been able to access the original separate images that make up the whole thing so to take up less room in the article I could create an animated GIF of it slowly changing between the years while retaining the colour scale at the bottom. Or could use one of Nasa's pre-created animations, see here, but these are rather long, about 2 minutes and would inlvove in users have to click to play it in the article as opposed to have a GIF that automatically and continuously loops the animation. OTRSed the release from director of sales and marketing F2. Given I culled the gas image, we are basically clear on all the permissions issues you raised on F. Of course we are generating new images and the like. Still...I think major upgrade. Also, I had same impression as you on the images there. But you found more than I did. Image request

Could you take this image and modify it to be more readable? I am thinking,

• crop the top, maybe just above the railroad as that is a feature discussed in article. (either delete the scale, can explain in talk, or move it down).

• take the number-letter things in the redsquares out of them and make bigger (so readable).

Sure thing I will see what I can do. I managed to access a PDF of the source book the diagram is from so can work on a larger, higher quality version, File:Oak ridge large.gif is in there too so may as well upload a better version of that too.

I've already been working on the images in the article, particularly I've been sourcing higher resolution versions of many of the images. I also added a better version of the infobox image and SVG version of the shoulder badge. I also came across this (File:Manhattan Project emblem.png) from Jones, Manhattan: The Army and the Bomb which I was wondering may be useful for the article, what you think? An image could really help this article...

Another request, I guess.

Have been trying to help out this article, A330. It's actually a pretty decent article, in terms of very highly researched and detailed. However, the topic is really dull with a lot of numbers and such. I feel some pity for the writer, who is a young first-timer and is getting fed up with the FAC process. Want to help him get it over the hump and get the star. And a particular image could really help.

One thing about the article, is that the very start of the body text (Background and Design effort sections) is really hard to keep track of all of the predecessor aircraft, co-developed aircraft, and different names of the thing as it went through design. The readers eyes glaze over and lose track of what is what. What I want to do is solve this with an image, showing the "flow chart" of different models developed. Just some basic powerpoint style drawing. Thinking it would go centered, be pretty wide and sit at the very top of the section. That way, reader can refer to it if he loses track of what is what.

Certainly sounds like a good idea, an image will defo help making more sense of all the variants and what not. I was thinking a flow chart would be the right sort of thing to illustrate it, perhaps progressing on a timeline too from say the 1970s up to the later models. I put together a table and was leaning to just doing that. [18] But it really doesn't need to be edited, so perhaps conversion to a graphic might make it look better. What do you think? I want something pretty simple so people just have a who's who in the zoo reference for all the number letter stuff at the start of the article. Thoughts? Could do a graphic but I think really that table you've put together would suit the purpose just fine in this case, once its formatted decently I'm sure it will do the job. Pure web rendered text will always be more readable than if it was rasterized in an image, plus a table can easily be changed, not that it should ever need to be and can also be converted into other languages easily. I work in images a lot, and I was thinking that this might be the next logical field for me to move into. Looking over the FA criteria page, it seems straightforward enough. (eavesdropping, sorry) Hey, you are helping them out by doing the reviews. They tend to be short of good people for that (more verbally strong). I think you know enough to just go and do it without some special training. Like anything on Wiki, you learn by doing and by getting feedback. But honest, you're overqualified. You'll be fine. People like I or Nikki have done them just by using common sense, but generally when a "real image person" (like you) helps it is better.

The main concern traditionally is to scrub them hard for copyright/attribution type issues. And definitely check that hard. However, I would urge you to do a little more than that. I worry that our people thing only of that as a hoop to jump through. Rather than "do we have illustration for what we should have", are the pictures good, do they have "EV" in terms of really showing concepts not just decoration. I even gigged someone recently for doing a singer and not having a sound clip (was a surprise to him...he only thought of words and pictures). I would be a ball-buster on the copyright. But if you can help out a little, gently, on the actual functional aspect of the files, would be good as well. Note, the FA criteria actually DO say that the pictures should serve the story. So this is not some TCO diversion.

I would personally help with FA first priority over GA. It has the more prominence in being on the front page. Also, gives you a chance to see some nice articles and interact with nominators and reviewers there. And I kinda think they "need" you more than GA, where most reviews are one person doing the whole article anyway.TCO (talk) 19:09, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

One thing I would add though, apart from the obvious digging for copyright and attribution issues is to see if the images that are there are the best they can be, so if they could use a little cleaning up, do so, if an SVG can be used in place of bitmap stuff use one etc. Also another thing I often find, particularly with older historical photos, is there are often higher res versions to be found if you are prepared to do a little searching. There is no set way to do a review, it is different every time, some may be short only having a few images while others are sometimes crammed full. WikiCup 2011 June newsletter

We are half way through 2011, and entering the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; the semi-finals are upon us! Points scored in the interim (29/30 June) may be counted towards next round, but please do not update your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. 16 contestants remain, and all have shown dedication to the project to reach this far. Our round leader was Casliber (submissions) who, among other things, successfully passed three articles through featured article candidates and claimed an impressive 29 articles at Did You Know, scoring 555 points. Casliber led pool D. Pool A was led by Wizardman (submissions), claiming points for a featured article, a featured list and seven good article reviews, while pool C was led by Eisfbnore (submissions), who claimed for two good articles, ten articles at Did You Know and four good article reviews. They scored 154 and 118 respectively. Pool B was by far our most competitive pool; six of the eight competitors made it through to round 4, with all of them scoring over 100 points. The pool was led by Hurricanehink (submissions), who claimed for, among other things, three featured articles and five good articles. In addition to the four pool leaders, 12 others (the four second places, and the 8 next highest overall) make up our final 16. The lowest scorer who reached round 4 scored 76 points; a significant increase on the 41 needed to reach round 3. Eight of our semi-finalists scored at least twice as much as this.

No points were awarded this round for featured pictures, good topics or In the News, and no points have been awarded in the whole competition for featured topics, featured portals or featured sounds. Instead, the highest percentage of points has come from good articles. Featured articles, despite their high point cost, are low in number, and so, overall, share a comparable number of points with Did You Know, which are high in number but low in cost. A comparatively small but still considerable number of points come from featured lists and good article reviews, rounding out this round's overall scores.

I changed the article name by 'moving' the page, which basically means the page and all its contents are moved to a renamed page. To do this click on the drop down arrow just to the left of the search box at the top-right corner of your screen and choose 'Move'. The numbered list I think your referring to is the contents list of links which is automatically added to an article when it has enough sections. he is on a three year contract deal. i am not sure on the dates. i have found some differing opinions all over the net. Regarding how long he was at barcelona, it universally seems to be just under seven years and he is currently 18 (although there is debate, but tottenham hotspur .com says hes 18) so he joined bbarca at 11. i aslo found a video of barca B winning some sort of cup in 08/09 and i think i saw ceballos but i researched other barca academy players and they have ALL left at 17 so this leaves me confused on what years he left his academy and when he started playing for barcelona B and when he was released i have simply made educational guesses. if you could firm the details please :-) BulgarianBoy21 (talk) 13:09, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Hey Dank, sure I'll join. I am indeed interested in paratroopers hence the name ;), I'm into all WWII related stuff really but in particular the European theatre and German related things. Such an animation sounds like it would certainly be useful. You can put it in GL if you wish, just try and give as much info as possible about what it is you need but I don't mind helping directly. Turtle map request

Hey FS, can we collab on another map? Would be for common box turtle. There are four subspecies in US and two in Mexico.

However, would not show those dots, let's just draw a line enclosing. I WOULD like to show the "zone of intergradation" that the fellow has.

I agree that the map is rather tall and messes up text wrap but I think that it's worth the sacrifice as it would look strange to only see half of Africa. In a way I think it is valuable to the reader to see the whole continent as they can visualise the range better in relation to the landmass as a whole. But if it is really causing too many problems then I would be happy to crop. I may not reply for a few days as am going away for a bit to the Peak District and I'll defiantly be back by Thursday. I moved it over to the right and dropped it down to 320px, which looks much better in my opinion. I agree that chopping out the top half of Africa would look kinda silly. WikiCup 2011 July newsletter

We are half way through the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; there is less than a month to go before we have our final 8. Our pool leaders are Adabow (submissions) (Pool A, 189 points) and PresN (submissions) (Pool B, 165 points). The number of points required to reach the next round is not clear at this time; there are some users who still do not have any recorded points. Please remember to update your submissions' pages promptly. In addition, congratulations to PresN, who scored the first featured topic points in the competition for his work on Thatgamecompany related articles. Most points this round generally have, so far, come from good articles, with only one featured article (White-bellied Sea Eagle, from Casliber (submissions)) and two featured lists (Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story, from PresN and Grammy Award for Best Native American Music Album, from Another Believer (submissions)). Points for Did You Know and good article reviews round out the scoring. No points have been awarded for In the News, good topics or featured pictures this round, and no points for featured sounds or portals have been awarded in the entire competition. On an unrelated note, preparation will be beginning soon for next year's WikiCup- watch this space!

There is little else to be said beyond the usual. Diagram of the Federal Government and American Union

If it won't take that much effort, I'd appreciate it if you could create a version of that image without the printing error, although it looks like It'd be a not-for-voting version. There are two reasons for that. First, because the blotches are rather noticeable, especially in thumb form, and I'd like to see how much of a difference it would make, and second, because I have half a mind to have this printed up in full size so I can gift it to a civics teacher I know, and I'd like for it to look as good on a classroom wall as possible. Can you fix an SVG please?

The curve arms in the logo at File:FHWA logo.svg is wrong. The correct curve is at http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/index.cfm (there's also a border in the new logo).

WikiCup 2011 July newsletter

The finals are upon us; we're down to the last few. One of the eight remaining contestants will be this year's WikiCup champion! 150 was the score needed to progress to the final; just under double the 76 required to reach round 4, and more than triple the 41 required to reach round 3. Our eight finalists are:

• Casliber (submissions), Pool A's winner. Casliber has the highest total score in the competition, with 1528, the bulk of which is made up of 8 featured articles. He has the highest number of total featured articles (8, 1 of which was eligible for double points) and total did you knows (72) of any finalist. Casliber writes mostly on biology, including ornithology, botany and mycology.
• PresN (submissions), Pool B's winner and the highest scorer this round. PresN is the only finalist who has scored featured topic points, and he has gathered an impressive 330, but most of his points come from his 4 featured articles, one of which scored double. PresN writes mostly on video games and the Hugo Awards.
• Hurricanehink (submissions), Pool A's runner-up. Hurricanehink's points are mostly from his 30 good articles, more than any other finalist, and he is also the only finalist to score good topic points. Hurricanehink, as his name suggests, writes mostly on meteorology.
• Wizardman (submissions), Pool B's runner-up. Wizardman has completed 86 good article reviews, more than any other finalist, but most of his points come from his 2 featured articles. Wizardman writes mostly on American sport, especially baseball.
• Miyagawa (submissions), the "fastest loser" (Pool A). Miyagawa has written 3 featured lists, one of which was awarded double points, more than any other finalist, but he was awarded points mostly for his 68 did you knows. Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, including dogs, military history and sport.
• Resolute (submissions), the second "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Resolute's points come from his 9 good articles. He writes mostly on Canadian topics, including ice hockey.
• Yellow Evan (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool A). Most of Evan's points come from his 10 good articles, and he writes mostly on meteorology.
• Sp33dyphil (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Phil's points come from his 9 good articles, 4 of which (more than any other finalist) were eligible for double points. He writes mostly on aeronautics.

We say goodbye to our seven other semi-finalists, Another Believer (submissions), Piotrus (submissions), Grandiose (submissions), Stone (submissions), Eisfbnore (submissions), Canada Hky (submissions) and MuZemike (submissions). Everyone still in the competition at this stage has done fantastically well, and contributed greatly to Wikipedia. We're on the home straight now, and we will know our winner in two months.

In other news, preparations for next year's competition have begun with a brainstorming thread. Please, feel free to drop by and share any thoughts you have about how the competition should work next year. Sign ups are not yet open, but will be opened in due course. Watch this space. Further, there has been a discussion about the rule whereby those in the WikiCup must delcare their participation when nominating articles at featured article candidates. This has resulted in a bot being created by new featured article delegate Ucucha (talk · contribs). The bot will leave a message on FAC pages if the nominator is a participant in the WikiCup.

A reminder of the rules: any points scored after August 29 may be claimed for the final round, and please remember to update submission pages promptly. WikiCup 2011 September newsletter

We are on this year's home straight, with less than a month to go until the winner of the 2011 WikiCup will be decided. The fight for first place is currently being contested by Miyagawa (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions) and Sp33dyphil (submissions), all of whom have over 200 points. This round has already seen multiple featured articles (1991 Atlantic hurricane season from Hurricanehink and Northrop YF-23 from Sp33dyphil) and a double-scoring featured list (Miyagawa's 1948 Summer Olympics medal table). The scores will likely increase far further before the end of the round on October 31 as everyone ups their pace. There is not much more to say- thoughts about next year's competition are welcome on the WikiCup talk page or the scoring talk page, and signups will open once a few things have been sorted out.

WikiCup 2011 October newsletter

The 2011 WikiCup is now over, and our new champion is Hurricanehink (submissions), who joins the exclusive club of the previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009) and Sturmvogel_66 (2010). The final standings were as follows:

Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

• The Featured Article Award: Casliber (submissions), for his performance in round 2. Hurricanehink (submissions) matched the score, but Casliber won the tiebreaker.
• The Good Article Award: Yellow Evan (submissions), for his performance in round 4.
• The Featured List Award: Miyagawa (submissions), for his performance in round 4. PresN (submissions) matched the score, but Miyagawa won the tiebreaker.
• The Recognised Topic Award (for good and featured topics): PresN (submissions), for his performance in round 3.
• The Did You Know Award: The Bushranger (submissions), for his performance in round 1.
• The In the News Award: Candlewicke (submissions), for his performance in round 1.
• The Reviewer Award (for good article reviews): Wizardman (submissions), for his performance in round 3.

No prize was awarded for featured pictures, sounds or portals, as none were claimed throughout the competition. The awards will be handed out over the next few days. Congratulations to all our participants, and especially our winners; we've all had fun, and Wikipedia has benefitted massively from our content work.

Preparation for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Interested parties are invited to sign up and participate in our straw polls. The problem is that there are some noises in it and his hair doesn't seem to be discernible from the background. In case you're interest, could you do something about it? Well I've evened out the washed out section on his clothing, cleaned up some of the background dust/noise and have made his hair more prominent and visible. I didn't want to alter it too significantly, with it being a historical painting, plus it was hard to determine what was noise and what was part of the canvas but I hope it looks better now. Could you redo this file: File:Natural Range of Python sebae and natalensis.svg

1. Cut the little box, covering Madagascar. (We are using map now in infobox now and keyed below is fine).

2. Do a new named version, since the original is used on Polish wiki. Please just title Natural range of Python sebae (will help with taxo inconsistency below in P.s.)

P.s. There is also an issue of the labeling being for species, whereas our article uses subspecies as taxonomy, but I can fix this on my own, in key.
