Philadelphia Project
[edit]Hi i have noticed that you have edited several articles on subjects related to the Philadelphia area. Several other users and myself have got together to creak a project to help improve, expand, and create articles concerning the Philadelphia/Delaware Valley region. While our project is still new, we are inviting people to join us to help it get started off on the right foot. You can find the project at Wikipedia:WikiProject Philadelphia, feel free to add your name and drop off an suggestions that you might have. If you have any questions, drop me a line anytime. Thanks. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 04:28, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the note on Richardson Dilworth. I'll check into Wikipedia:WikiProject Philadelphia. This is my first dip into Wikipedia in quite awhile and I don't much know what I'm doing, so I'll have to feel my way. I grew up and lived in the Powelton Village area for many years, where my mother had been quite active in the community. I've also been researching a murder that took place there in 1900 which I've been half-heartedly turning into a novel. In the meantime I've updated a few areas such as MOVE and Frank Rizzo. I was thinking of adding just a bit on Ira Einhorn, but is he really worth it? Dsbd 21:08, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
- Good catch on the Amoroso name...my bad on that one.--Looper5920 15:06, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
- I believe dominant is the right word for this one. If you go to the Links section of their website and see who they distribute to it is safe to consider them tops. If you want to change it maybe "preeminent" might be a better word? My opinion--Looper5920 15:11, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
Main Line category
[edit]Like the new category but I would caution against putting entire counties in there. For example, while some of DelCo is considered the main line you would never consider darby and yeadon as Main Line townships. My personal opinion is that it might be better to stick with towns vice counties.--Looper5920 10:57, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
FYI - I put prod on List of words and phrases alleged to be derived from misunderstandings
[edit]IMHO it's not really the right kind of material for a wikipedia article - basically being unverifable. Please discuss at the article (and provide sources) if you feel different. Cheers. Megapixie 08:43, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
Beaver
[edit]What the dickens is it about Beaver that makes it so popular with the vandals (beside the obvious)? Bridesmill 19:25, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I do doubt the veracity of the citations (re. beaver + pope = fish). I'm certain they're genuine, but 'beavers were once considered fish by the Catholic Church' is (I suspect) an urban legend with a substantial spread. In other words, they're fallible.
None of the sources cited were experts on Catholicism or the period in question. The closest it came was a page on Catholic practices (which, if it ever contained anything about beaver counting as fish, doesn't any more) and an article by a Swedish natural scientist (as a Protestant during the Enlightenment, someone with a lot of irreconcilable baggage against and not necessarily the best source on the practices of the Church).
It stinks of an urban legend to me, and I'm of the school that if you can't prove something asserting it is ridiculous, especially if it's fairly ridiculous on its face to begin with. ACK-47 01:05, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Wanamaker organ
[edit]Hello--I noticed you were putting the wanamaker organ up as a FAC. Are you really serious about this? I would be thrilled to see it on the front page because I've put alot of work into it, my father being the manager of the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ, but I don't think it's up to par. Do you have any suggestions as to how to proceed in improving it? AdamBiswanger1 19:49, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe you are right. I just feel that it's a bit too short and it doesn't have enough references (something I was going to fix with the wealth of books under my father's control). Other than that, though, you are right. It's very good . AdamBiswanger1 22:30, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Philadelphia vote
[edit]I don't understand your "rule is a rule" reasoning for opposing the move. Like Kafziel pointed out earlier, "consensus dictates convention, not the other way around". The only reason New York City and Chicago are listed as exceptions is because editors on their respective pages voted to make them exceptions. To use the fact that this city is not yet explicitly listed as an exception as a reason to oppose making it an exception is nonsensical. --Serge 17:51, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
You wrote, "If what you really want to do is change the general U.S. city naming convention, then I would urge you to resume the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (settlements)/U.S. convention change (August 2006)". Do you not understand what Kafziel means when he writes, "Consensus dictates convention, not the other way around"? The written conventions simply reflect what the conventions are; they do not determine what they are. They are not rules. And that's not where they are changed. They are changed at the individual article level, and then the written reflection of what the conventions are are updated accordingly (like Chicago was added to the exception list after editors decided it would be an exception not on the naming convention page, but on the individual article's page. I think you're not understanding the feedback mechanism that must be in place here. Yes, the convention guidelines provide guidance in those situations where guidance is being sought - the only way conventions could ever change is through the mechanism we're using here, at the article level. Therefore it makes no sense to cite the rule as the reason to oppose a given case being an exception to that rule. You say your concern is a slippery slope leading to a lack of coherent policy. I think you're confusing the process of policy evolution with policy elimination. Please read all the comments and discussion and reconsider your vote, and decide on the individual merits of whether Philadelphia should be an exception or not (and, if not, please specify the reason(s) you believe it specifically should not be an exception). Thanks. --Serge 18:21, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
Good and productive discussion. Thanks. Users like you make Wikipedia work. --Serge 01:18, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
I've had others initially disagree with me on this issue and then some weeks later let me know they've seen the light... You seem objective and rational enough to come around too. We'll see... I'll leave you with this to think about: the main point is we already have a convention that is shared by all Wikipedia articles, including most city articles in other countries - use the most common name unless there is an ambiguity issue (and use the disambiguation convention in those cases, and in those cases only). There is no reason to have an inconsistent guideline that calls for applying a disambiguation format on an article name that has no ambiguity issues, which is easily determined by whether the common name redirects to the article anyway (e.g., Philadelphia -> Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). If there is such a reason, what is it? And why is it not expressed in the discussion section of the voting on Talk:Philadelphia, Pennsylvania? --Serge 01:51, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Templates
[edit]Thanks for your comments and help with Bryn Mawr. I have made a few templates and can offer some help, but User:VerruckteDan is probably a better person to ask (he made all the PA county nav boxes). One question I have is how do you know what is part of the Main Line and what is not? Better phrased: What is the source you have for what is part of it or not?
One nice thing with the county templates is you know what is already a city / borough / twp / CDP and have the county and census to use as sources (though even there we have the towns in PA question, just Bloomsburg or McCandless too?). Ruhrfisch 02:54, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading images/media to Wikipedia! There is however another Wikimedia foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In the future, please consider creating an account and uploading media there instead. That way, all the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons. Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Help us spread the word about Commons by informing other users, and please continue uploading!

Govende
[edit]A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Govende, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}}

Someone listed your image for deletion on Commons because it "infringes copyrighted sculpture by Claes Oldenburg." You may want to say something on the talk page there. --EvaK (talk) 10:35, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Hi, whilst going through the Commons deleting images of Cloud Gate as the result of a deletion discussion there, I came across this image that you uploaded. Is it OK with you if I delete this image too, or would you prefer it to go through a deletion request? The reason that the Commons images were deleted is that the copyright of the sculpture belongs to the artist, and unfortunately in the US the freedom of panorama laws do not provide an exemption for sculptures in public places (as is true in other countries). Proposed deletion of List of place names starting with "The"
[edit]A proposed deletion template has been added to the article List of place names starting with "The", suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:
- This article appears to be original research "listcruft". No assertion of notability has been made, and would not seem to be written in world view.
All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}

Scjessey (talk) 00:46, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
- Since I hate seeing anything deleted I thought I'd post this here instead of adding to the thread on the page itself: It's a vaguely interesting topic, but I note that almost all the Wikipedia pages linked to do not use the word "The" in the place name, with the exception of The Bottom, The Bronx, and The Gambia. The link to The Riviera is not to what is expected. Also, the whole introduction seems iffy. The Pacific, the Great Plains, the Alps, etc--these are not examples of places with the word "the" in them. It is normal to use the word "the" when referring to any river, ocean, etc. That does not make it part of the proper name itself. Same with "the" United States, West Indies, Bahamas, Upper West Side, etc. "The" is part of common usage, not the proper name itself. At least that is my understanding. I'd be interested in a good source that actually addressed this topic, being a toponymy geek and all. The six sites you listed on the talk page are all blogs, forums, or random people writing unsourced stuff. A better source would be nice. Pfly (talk) 03:34, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
WP:Hornbook -- a new WP:Law task force for the J.D. curriculum
[edit]Hi Spikebrennan,
I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".
Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.
- Each casebook will have a subpage.
- Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
- It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
- Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
- I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.
What you can do now:
- 1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
- 2. If you're a law student,
- Email http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:Hornbook to your classmates, and tell them to do the same.
- Contact me directly via talk page or email about coordinating a chapter of "Student WP:Hornbook Editors" at your own school.
- (You don't have to start the club, or even be involved in it; just help direct me to someone who might.)
- 3. Introduce yourself to me. Law editors on Wikipedia are a scarce commodity. Do knock on my talk page if there's an article you'd like help on.

Thank you for participating in my FPC nomination. I understand that this FPC will not pass, but I was considering re-shooting the photo and renominating at a later date to address the concerns expressed there. Could you explain why you believe the EV is dubious? A paragraph at the Lawrence Sullivan Ross article reads:
- "Within weeks of Ross's death former cadets at Texas AMC began gathering funds for a monument. In 1917, the state appropriated $10,000 for the monument, and two years later a 10 foot (3 m) bronze statue of Ross, sculpted by Pompeo Coppini, was unveiled at the center of the Texas AMC campus. In more recent years, students began the tradition of placing pennies at the feet of statue before exams for good luck. School legend states that Ross would often tutor students, and as payment would accept only a penny for their thoughts. At exam time his statue, located in Academic Plaza, is often covered in pennies."
Just hoping to get feedback so I don't waste my time. Thanks. Jujutacular T · C 20:02, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for the feedback. About EV: I would argue that the point of the photo is only somewhat used to depict what he looks like, and more to do with his "legacy" (hence being in that section of the article). On my potential re-shoot I would try to employ better composition to focus on the statue itself. I would also make sure a heftier amount of pennies can be seen at his feet, which also adds EV. About copyright status: I am quite sure it is public domain. It was erected in 1918, and "unveiled" in 1919. From the licensing page you linked, (Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#United_States): "...public artwork installed before 1923 is considered to be public domain, and can be photographed freely." Thanks again for the feedback, it has been quite helpful. Happy editing! Jujutacular T · C 03:17, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

File copyright problem with File:Suburban station.JPG
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Suburban station.JPG. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

Your thoughts?
[edit]Timeline of Philadelphia has a discussion about selection and inclusion criteria. Two editors are discussing it, but we have divergent views. More opinions would be helpful. - SummerPhDv2.0 13:24, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. [edit]Hi Spikebrennan,
This is to let you know that the featured picture File:Frederick Douglass (circa 1879).jpg, which you uploaded or nominated, has been selected as the English Wikipedia's picture of the day (POTD) for October 3, 2020. A preview of the POTD is displayed below and can be edited at Template:POTD/2020-10-03. I have no idea why this image has taken so long to become POTD. Frederick Douglass (c. 1818 – 1895) was an escaped slave who became an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. He was separated from his mother as an infant, raised by his grandmother till the age of six, and was then owned and hired by a succession of masters. Escaping by railroad in 1838, he settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts, then an abolitionist center full of former slaves. He became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, gaining note for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings. This photograph of Douglass was taken around 1879. Photograph credit: George Kendall Warren
