Guild of Copy Editors July 2016 News
Hello everyone, and welcome to the July 2016 GOCE newsletter. June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 12 through 18 June; the themes were video games and Asian geography. Of the 18 editors who signed up, 11 removed 47 articles from the backlog. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part. Coordinator elections: The second tranche of Guild coordinators for 2016, who will serve a six-month term until 23:59 UTC on 31 December, have been elected. Jonesey95 remains as your drama-free Lead Coordinator, and Corinne and Tdslk are your new assistant coordinators. For her long service to the Guild, Miniapolis has been enrolled in the GOCE Hall of Fame. Thanks to everyone who voted in the election; our next scheduled one occurs in December 2016. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible; self-nominations are welcome and encouraged. July Drive: Our month-long July Copy Editing Backlog Elimination Drive is now underway. Our aim is to remove articles tagged for copy-edit in April, May and June 2015, and to complete all requests on the GOCE Requests page from June 2016. The drive ends at 23:59 on 31 July 2016 (UTC). Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdlsk. |

Issue with username changes
Hi, I put a request to change my username to TedEdwards last week, but the request has not been met due to the technical issue with the software. Could I ask if you have any idea when this issue will be sorted out? Theoosmond (talk) 21:41, 6 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Theoosmond: The patch should be out by the 14th, according to phab:T137973#2434800. Sorry for the long wait. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 21:43, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

Recent changes
- A new image scaler fixed a number of bugs for showing SVG files. Some new problems turned up. [3][4][5]
- Notifications are grouped by types. They are now counted by number of notifications and not by unread groups. That change may increase the number of notifications displayed. The earlier way of counting was often incorrect. Unread notifications will also be displayed first. [6][7][8]
- Special:Notifications now has a maximum width for the notifications list on desktop computers. This allows long titles and descriptions to be cut properly. Notifications are now also better parsed. [9][10][11]
Problems
- On 5 July Wikimedia Commons had problems and could not be edited for 20 minutes. For a short while after that the recent changes log and some gadgets were not working properly. It affected administrative actions on other projects too. [12]
- Users who have multiple unread notifications can mark them as read by visiting Special:Notifications page on their wiki.
Changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 July. It will be on all wikis from 14 July (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 12 July at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Username Change request move
Hi K6ka, Just to let you know that i have moved my request to Meta:Steward requests/Username changes so that the existing user can be usurped. The account who carries the name i want to be renamed as hasn't made a single edit since 2009. Thanks! Class455fan1 (talk) 20:48, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Class455fan1: Yes, I've seen it. I'll let another renamer handle the usurpation request; be sure to notify the target user on their home wiki about the request, and we'll give them about a month to respond. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 20:49, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
- Already done. Notified target. The account was based on the commons. However it says on the notification that if they do nothing, the request will be filled after seven days (which they do nothing will be most likely). Will the 7 days be the case or will i have to wait a month? Class455fan1 (talk) 20:51, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Class455fan1: 7 days is the waiting period for WP:CHU/U; however, WP:CHU/U can only process requests for accounts that have a presence on the English Wikipedia. Accounts that have a significant presence on other wikis, like in your case, have to be filed at m:SRUC, where the waiting period is one month. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 20:55, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

- I see, So should I assume that my account will be renamed on August 19? In which case i will place a notice on my talk page.Class455fan1 (talk) 20:58, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Class455fan1: Around the 19th or 20th, if the target user doesn't respond. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 21:02, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
- Okay. Thanks for your help! I will start to place a note on my user and talk pages saying if all goes to plan, i will be renamed. Class455fan1 (talk) 21:06, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Wikilove?
I'm dumb & usually only correct small edits & spelling mistakes so I hope I am doing this right. I read your user page & you said you appreciate WikiLove, so I wanted to give you some. Thank you for all the name changing you've done for me. My name change mid-life crisis is over & you will probably be rid of me now, but I wanted to thank you for the tireless, repetitive work you do for people who probably never do stop to say thanks or really even realise you are a person (I thought you were a bot the first time, I am so sorry). So thank you, for the repetitive work that many people are never willing to do & certainly not without a paycheck. Thank you. I wish I could buy you a coffee or some other for of gratitude (that I can afford, I am dirt poor, but I'd blow my weekly 6 dollar allowance on you if there was a way??????? Hint hint nudge nudge). Thanks again. Monroe Charles (talk) 23:48, 26 July 2016 (UTC)
