New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022
Hello John B123,
- Backlog status
At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.
Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]
In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).
While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).
- Backlog drive
A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.
- TIP – New school articles
Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.
- Misc
There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}
, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:
Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 12238 articles, as of 00:00, 13 November 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot
There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.
- Reminders
- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
- If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing
{{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page. - If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022
Hello John B123,
- Backlog status
After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.
Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.
- Coordination
- MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
- Open letter to the WMF
- The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
- TIP - Reviewing by subject
- Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
- New reviewers
- The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
- Reminders
- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
- If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing
{{subst:NPR invite}}

Obadiah Poundage letter
Hi John. I carried out the merge indicated by the close of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Obadiah Poundage. See here: [1]. Having done that, I felt the amount of information in the Porter (beer) article was disproportionate, and left a message on the talk page: Talk:Porter_(beer)#Obadiah_Poundage indicating the situation, and proposing that a suggestion made in the AfD to move the article to Obadiah Poundage letter should be carried out. After several days, with no comments, I carried out the move. So the closure outcome has been carried out, has been seen to not work, and the secondary solution indicated has been carried out. Given the circumstances, would you have any objection to Obadiah Poundage letter being restored? SilkTork (talk) 11:29, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hi SilkTork. Whilst inclusion of the letter in Porter (beer) may be disproportionate, recreating the article under a new title isn't the solution. Prior to my reversion, Obadiah Poundage letter would have met the criteria for speedy deletion under WP:G4 as a recreation of Obadiah Poundage which was deleted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Obadiah Poundage. My suggestion is that rather that including the whole letter in Porter (beer), a summary of the letter should be added. Regards. --John B123 (talk) 18:35, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for your input, John. I won't take up any more of your time. I'll discuss the matter with the others involved in the AfD to see what can be agreed as the best solution. Regards SilkTork (talk) 22:38, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

Merge close
On Talk:World's second oldest profession, in your edit summary, you wrote that "Discussion can only be closed by an uninvolved editor", but WP:MERGECLOSE states Any user, including the user who first proposed the merger, may close the discussion and move forward with the merger
. Schazjmd (talk) 13:29, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you, that was the page I was looking at for guidance. I asked the user who opposed the merger on their talk page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ttocserp#Oldest-Profession_Merger). They agreed given that the smaller page be merged into a final section of the larger one. This is the first time I've merged two pages, and I wanted to do it by-the-book, I'm sorry I didn't realize only one discussion page was allowed. Maltice (talk) 14:42, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Schazjmd: If you read the rest of the sentence you quote from WP:MERGECLOSE it states
there has been no discussion or if there is unanimous consent to merge
, neither of which is the case here. --John B123 (talk) 18:05, 4 September 2022 (UTC)- @John B123 I closed the merger discussion because there was unanimous consent. Is there a problem in the way I asked Ttocserp, or the way I referenced their agreement? Maltice (talk) 18:35, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Schazjmd: If you read the rest of the sentence you quote from WP:MERGECLOSE it states
- Hi Maltice. The discussions need to be in one place. Opposition on the discussion page but agreement by the same author on another page just leads to confusion. On a separate note, when merging you need to give attribution in your edit summary such as content merged fromWorld's second oldest profession, see that page's history for attribution. Regards. --John B123 (talk) 18:49, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for the reminder, I will remember to give proper attribution, and only open one discussion in the future. Can the page be restored? Maltice (talk) 18:59, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

Up The Faraway Tree
I'm struggling to understand the reversions on this page, particularly as I've been adding more information/references.
I created this page purely from the experience of a site USER, who wondered what the fourth book in this series was about. I'd find a page more useful - even if in its present form it's brief - rather than a redirect which tells me nothing about it. TheFatJamoc (talk) 12:45, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hi TheFatJamoc, for an article to be in Wikipedia, the subject needs to be notable. Notability is defined in WP:GNG as
received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject
. None of the other books in the series have their own article. I would suggest you add a section into The Faraway Tree to cover Up 'The Faraway Tree'. Regards. --John B123 (talk) 22:47, 23 September 2022 (UTC)- Thanks John.
- It appears as if the other books have been recently removed, as they did have their own pages I believe last month? TheFatJamoc (talk) 20:04, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hi TheFatJamoc, it looks like they were turned into redirects a few days ago on the 22nd. I would guess they were redirected as they lacked references and had been tagged as such for a long time. Regards. --John B123 (talk) 21:17, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks John, I've added the piece at your suggestion - I think it's probably better this way, because, as you say, they're not especially notable works of fiction. TheFatJamoc (talk) 15:29, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hi TheFatJamoc, it looks like they were turned into redirects a few days ago on the 22nd. I would guess they were redirected as they lacked references and had been tagged as such for a long time. Regards. --John B123 (talk) 21:17, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

Friendly advice from an experienced editor?
I have made an article about a company that is dear to me (not paid, but I wanted to help out). I have written many advertising and non-advertising articles in my time and I feel like I have not utilized any advertising speech in this one, took great care not to. Still resulted in move to draft and flagging for all sorts of things, especially the "covert advertising" and "spam" I found quite extreme, considering the facts. I have looked at many smaller company articles that have been approved and I just dont see the distinction. I have used notable sources, be it international or major media outlets in the country. You seem to have experience with these types of articles, so if you could point me, or someone else who finds this, in the right direction, I would highly appreciate. I would like to cover more businesses on wikipedia in the future but this whole situation is quite discouraging. You can find it under Draft:Sensoneo. Thank you. Proposed deletion cannot be used with redirects, user pages (except user books), drafts, templates, categories, or pages in any other namespace
. This is borne out by administrator Liz removing the PROD tag, and another editor telling you the same at MFD. I would advise in future that rather than editwarring, you should familiarise yourself with the relevant WP policies. Unused, superseded by File:Prostitution laws of the world2.svg.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 08:43, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
Wikimedia Foundation project to improve PageTriage
Hi, as an active New Page Patroller, I wanted to make sure you were aware of an upcoming Wikimedia Foundation project to improve the PageTriage extension. We recently published results of user interviews, and have some findings that we would value patrollers' opinions on. If you haven't yet, please consider adding the project page to your watchlist to stay up to date with our progress! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:17, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi I found a bunch of articles about Sara Tomko, many with her name in the headline. I also found more roles. Have added all this to article, but more work to be done. I think it's looking a lot better and hope this shows notability? Thanks. 2001:BB6:4E52:7D00:7551:FBEA:EA2:59C3 (talk) 08:50, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
Authority control
Hi John. For future information, the syntax is {Authority control|qid=Q6197319} although the parameter is not needed if the page is already connected to Wikidata. Best regards — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:53, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

re : about the Comfort Women
hello, The short description should be edited to keep up with historical accuracy.
Considering the sole responsibility of the IJA (army) in this crime is a historical error because the Japanese army and navy were two quite separate entities and they both participated in this crime.
You can also take 5 mins to check this page and you will find that the IJN (Navy) involvement is also mentioned three times, so it makes sense to change this short description. You are free to leave this text without correction but it would be a shame for the truthfulness of the rest of the text which is correctly written. Hanafunda (talk) 03:04, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Hanafunda: The place to discuss this is on the article's talk page. Please also note the warning on your talk page about edit warring. --John B123 (talk) 06:16, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Gravity Noir albums
A tag has been placed on Category:Gravity Noir albums indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! ReferenceExpander
Just a friendly heads-up in case you weren't already aware, since it's installed on your common.js: Careless use of ReferenceExpander has caused serious problems. It's currently at MFD, and a large cleanup project is underway to repair the citations damaged by the script. I and several other users have !voted that the script be deleted or disabled, and I wouldn't recommend using it at all unless you thoroughly check every reference it modifies against the previous revision. If you're interested in a more detailed explanation of the script's issues, Folly Mox has provided an excellent summary at the MFD. — SamX [talk · contribs] 05:07, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
About reviews
Hi John, I want review and advises from an experienced user like you, would you mind to check my last article? Because of it's notability, I want to know what to do as soon as possible, regards --ჯეო4WIKIMessage MeContributions 00:55, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi ჯეო, looking at Nini Badurashvili you need to demonstrate notability by adding three references from independent reliable sources that give in depth coverage not just a passing mention. Social media and IMDb are not considered reliable. Hope this helps, regards. --John B123 (talk) 07:00, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Seeking your help on some unreviewed items
Hi John.
It been a while since I have sought your help. Hope you're doing welI. I see you've been busy with other stuff this year.
Although most stuff I wrote has been handled by others, I've got a few articles that are stuck review queue and no has one picked them up. I know you're not as active these days but if you have any time to spare, would you mind reviewing these ones?
Thanks

Date of linux.com webpage cited in "glibc" entry
In a 2020 edit to the glibc article, you added a date of September 12 2008 to a linux.com article citation (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Glibc&oldid=939012125). But the article's own webpage on linux.com had "October 24, 2000" as the article date. Can you explain what the rationale was for believing the September 2008 date to be the correct one? Thanks.
AstridRedfern (talk) 13:54, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi AstridRedfern, the linked page https://www.linux.com/news/feature-8-cores-budget-building-better-workstation/ gives the date as September 2008 just below the title. Regards John B123 (talk) 14:19, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
- @John B123 I think I can see what happened. When you added that date, the link was redirecting to a different webpage to the one it had originally pointed to.
- https://www.linux.com/archive/feature/3874 was, at the time it was first cited, a link to the October 2000 article "Forking: it could even happen to you" on linux.com. In the time since then, that article's URL changed at least twice - once to http://archive09.linux.com/feature/3874, and again to https://www.linux.com/news/forking-it-could-even-happen-you/
- Meanwhile, for some reason, the original URL started pointing to that "8 Cores" article. I've tested a couple of URLs of the form https://www.linux.com/archive/feature/$SOME_NUMBER_OR_OTHER, and more than one of them do redirct to the 8 Cores article. AstridRedfern (talk) 14:26, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
- :Hi AstridRedfern, that seems to explain it. I was going to change the url and date but see you have already done it. Regards. --John B123 (talk) 15:08, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

A few more articles for your review
Hi John,
I see you've been reviewing some articles these past few days. A few more of my articles are stuck in the queue at the moment. When you have time, would you mind reviewing them?
- B. Riley Financial

- National Fund for Technology Transfer and Commercialisation
Thanks- Imcdc Contact 12:25, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Imcdc, I've reviewed all except B. Riley Financial which has already had a notability tag added. Are there more in depth sources you could add to this? Regards. --John B123 (talk) 22:02, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
- @John B123 It was tagged just a few hours before you had the chance to check. I have made the adjustments and added some more analysis/coverage to it. - Imcdc Contact 14:31, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- : Hi Imcdc, it look ok to me, Regards. --John B123 (talk) 05:19, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi John
Once again I am in need of your help as the NPP backlog is getting too big. I am submitting these articles for your review and would appreciate your help.

- Hi Imcdc, sorry for the delay I've been busy in real life. They all look ok to me. Regards. --John B123 (talk) 21:19, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- @John B123. No problem. I understand you're not really active on wikipedia as much so I don't expect an instant response. Appreciate your reliability and help during times like this - Imcdc Contact 00:18, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
