Re: my last note to you

I have just seen your reply to my first note. This illustrates how new I am to Wikipedia pages. It had not occurred to me to scroll down from the top of your page, because it did not look anything like my user page, which is very simple - black on white - like a black-lead pencil on a piece of white photocopying / printing paper, which is how I like it because I am simple too, and like to see things in black and white.

I am very grateful for your reply. It is good to get critical, analytical feedback, and to know that I am working in the right direction. The reason that I was not erasing everything below my informatory lines that say words to the effect, 'from here on down, what you see is my drafting notes and garbage'. That was because I had set out by beginning to edit someone else's work and I wanted to keep it, somewhere, out of respect for its author, because it would never have occurred to me to put an article in Wikipedia about my life's profession, even though it looks as if I may be one of the last of my line - and unless someone makes the effort to write about them, then they will go the way of the dinosaurs - eternal oblivion and anonymity.

But, I take your point, and will copy and paste into a word document, the text below the point where I have managed to develop fair quality, so that I can copy and paste it back, if and when I need to.

Thanks again,

Namaste.

Wikipedia article entitled County surveyor

As you have been so helpful, please forgive my forwardness, but, I suggest that now would be an appropriate time to change the title of the article to 'County Surveyor' to reflect what it is really about; and remove the opening information tag that says the article is overly USA-centric.

In anticipation,

07:47, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

Done I really like the images you've added; I'm glad we could get your unique perspective for this article. If you're finished, once you remove the notes at the bottom of the article you can remove the under construction template as well (or just ask me to do it).
Oh, and I remember you saying something about removing other people's work. There's no worry about that; we keep a history of each and every revision of every article. So we'll always have a record of all work done to the page, regardless of how it changes. Thanks, --JaGatalk 07:55, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

Blimey JaGa, your response was remarkably fast. I wish my natural choice of Esquire to me was as focused.

Wikipedia article entitled County surveyor

JaGa - my apologies for disturbing you again, but please take a look at my Reference #6, about why I am able to give such a unique perspective, and answer me the following questions -

(1) is such a reference appropriate; or

(2) should I qualify the article by citing at the beginning of it, my full name, lawful sub-nominal abbreviated title, professional institution membership, my oath to God, Queen, and Country, and additionally that I was commissioned in 1970 by Her Majesty to thereafter promulgate all of my knowledge of the Royal Division to the best of my ability, as I would in presenting my proofs of evidence to a court, committee, or tribunal, appointed by the Crown? and

(3) if I do that, can we lock the page when I finish writing it, so that no-one can tinker with it without both your and my consent?

DadrianT,EsqMCIHT (talk) 08:25, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Adrian. No worries about asking questions; I'm glad to help (although I will be going off to bed soon - it's 4:36 here - if you're in England, does that mean you've been working all night?) Regarding reference #6, I'm afraid that would not be an appropriate reference. A reference needs to be a published work that can be independently verified, like a book, newspaper, legal document, etc. that the public has access to. Also, Wikipedia does not permit the signing of articles (Even though your question is in the context of a legal document, the policy stands.) Finally, we're unable to lock pages completely or permanently; without doubt others will come along and make changes. This can be very discouraging to an editor, but since we do preserve the history of every page, your work will never be lost, even if others alter its current appearance. Cheers, --JaGatalk 08:38, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia article entitled County surveyor

Thank you JaGa. I am grateful you have so much patience with me. I am a night-bird too. Sometimes I tap away at my laptop right through the night, and go to bed at around 8:00 - 9:00 in the morning, not, once or twice, but every day of the week, sometimes for as long as a month or more. I often don't eat or drink much when I am having such sessions, and don't therefore stop until I collapse with physical and mental fatigue. On a geometrically increasing number of times, sleep deprivation has caused me to have nervous breakdowns. So, be warned!

Having checked the time differential on the World Time Clock website, I believe that you hail from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Antigua/Bermuda, or Nova Scotia. In view of your interest in the County Surveyor article, my guess is that you are in an existing or former British territory, the most likely being the existing one rather than the former one. So, I'll take a chance and say, Hi, fellow Brit.

I'll go take reference #6 off the County Surveyor article as soon as I finish writing this note and saved it. I understand Wikipedia's policy stance, which aims for equanimity, thereby minimising bias as much as it can.

Adrian.

Protocol relative URLs

Just a reminder the Toolserver and Wikimedia sites now support HTTPS. What this means for you is instead of writing <a href="http://en.wikipedia... you now write <a href="//en.wikipedia..., this uses protocol relative URLs to prevent switch from a secure connection to non-secure. — Dispenser 00:39, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks much for letting me know - I wasn't aware. I'll get onto updating my pages. Cheers, --JaGatalk 01:04, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Done Thanks again for the heads up. --JaGatalk 15:19, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Hello JaGa,

I've been tidying up links to redirects but am stuck on one. According to Dab Solver you're my rival, so I thought I'd slow you down turn to you for advice. Someone has changed 16mm from a redirect to a dab, with his first ever edit, leaving lots of articles about film linking to a dab. I can see reasons for a dab page, although 16 mm (spaced, per MOS) is still a redirect. How do you think I should mend this?

Certes (talk) 15:06, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Certes! I moved the disambig to 16 mm (disambiguation), restored the redirect to point to 16 mm film, and added a redirect template to the film article to help people find the disambig. Having 16mm be a disambig and 16 mm point to an article would be ridiculous. I considered pointing 16 mm to the disambig, but really, What links here and the page view statistics (16 mm scale model trains, 327 page views in the last 30 days; 16 mm film, 10,444) made WP:PRIMARYTOPIC status clear. --JaGatalk 16:34, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, neatly done. When you put it that way, the new arrangement is clearly the best solution. Certes (talk) 17:40, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

Here's a suggestion that might be simple to implement and very useful to some of us. http://toolserver.org/~jason/disambig_links.php outputs two columns with links to the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foo) and what links there (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:WhatLinksHere&target=Foo&namespace=0). Could it have a third link to http://toolserver.org/~jason/dab_fix_list.php?title=Foo for the Disambig fix list? I think most special characters can be treated the same way as in the first link; if it fails in a few awkward cases then I'm sure the target audience will understand.

I could probably achieve this for my own browser with something like GreaseMonkey, but it would be better if you could make it work for everyone.

Thanks for listening, Certes (talk) 13:29, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

I like that idea. I never know which reports are going to catch on; I had assumed that was one of the unpopular ones. Let me make absolutely sure it won't hurt any of R'n'B's TDD work and I'll put it in. Cheers, --JaGatalk 05:05, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Hello,

You may be interested in the discussion regarding deleting a list article regarding fictional Carpenters. You have in the past created a List of those surnamed Wood. I created this list at the suggestions of others citing Wiki rules. Now after following their advice a new group comes forward and deletes the list when I was oversea. I asked for it to be restored then imdiately starts the deletion process. I had the lists within the Carpenter surname article and would be happy to put them back together again. Put it seems if I am damned if I do and damned if I don't.

I am very frustrated. I would appreciate any input. See: List_of_fictional_characters_with_surname_Carpenter

Disambiguation Bot

Well Ja Ga: Fixing my new article "Sergio Franchi discography" using your Bot seemed simple enough. I Went through the fix, but get a message that Internet Explorer is preventing cross-site scripting. Have you a solution, or should I just remove the Internal link? Thanks, CatherineCathlec (talk) 18:54, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Catherine! I'll ask Dispenser, the author of Dab Solver, and hopefully get something for you soon. Thanks for the note. --JaGatalk 02:28, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
The XSS Filter in Internet Explorer 8 and 9 when moving across domains (toolserver.org to wikipedia.org) mangles the edit box text like this. Unless the users hits "Show changes" again, they wouldn't know they were saving a mangled version. My current recommendation is for repeat users to disable this feature (described in the linked PDF) and everyone else to use the copy & paste workaround provided. Bug 32013 has been filed and with any luck this problem will be a thing of the past. — Dispenser 06:47, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

I must say, I was surprised; It's odd not to see you in the HOF. Of course, it's getting tougher these days - the top 500 list is getting smaller and smaller, and the bonus list is getting bigger. I noticed that of the top four finishers, three of them got most of their points from the bonus list. (R'n'B was the outlier with a mere 545.) And J04n is back! That was good to see.
Some IP has been converting erstwhile redirects like Sri Lankan into disambigs, so there should be at least a few meaty ones to dig into this month... --JaGatalk 00:35, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

It was one of those last moment things, 250 edits on Halloween [1]. And JaGa, core files are coredumps, use pstack to read them. — Dispenser 00:34, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

I started Metorex today. Checking "what links here" I saw your sandbox. I had typed Zamba when I meant Zambia. I try to avoid links to disambiguation pages, but obviously do not always succeed. I would be happy to get a notice telling me when I had goofed up. It is probably much easier for me (the author) to fix an error like this than for someone else. Better would be a tool, a tab at the top of the edit area, that would highlight any links to disambiguation pages. But a message would certainly be useful. Aymatth2 (talk) 00:26, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

A visual clue would be great, although a note would still be useful if the visual clue is not noticed. Maybe not color: 10% or so of males have impaired color perception. Possibly new editors should be treated more gently than more experienced editors, if this is not hard to do. What I would see as a convenient reminder could be seen as a slap in the face by someone just starting. Dunno. Aymatth2 (talk) 02:29, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, that's my worry too: how to make sure the message is not felt like an attack. I definitely don't want to be bitey, but I also don't want to go any more TLDR than I already have. (I wonder if I should vary the message based on edit count? Gonna think about that one.) If you've any suggestions on how I could improve the message, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, --JaGatalk 03:22, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
To me there is something not quite right about: "Your help in fixing this disambiguation link would be appreciated". The presumption should be that the editor wants to fix any problem, so does not have to be advised by a bot to do so. Maybe change to something like "Any suggestions for improving this automated tool are welcome". I would not send the message to relatively new users (1,000 edits, maybe?). Also, perhaps have an hour or so delay to allow for corrections before sending the message, if that is not there already. But however you tweak it, someone is going to get pissed off. It is still going to be a useful tool. :~) Aymatth2 (talk) 12:20, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
Good suggestions all. Another user had suggested the minimum edit count; I resisted that time, but now I'm thinking to resist a second time would be folly. Not to mention it would eliminate that newbie-biting worry of mine. I've put in the functionality, and will be playing around with different minimum edit count thresholds. Some delay is unavoidable thanks to the time spent in collating the data, so no worries there, but I may pad it a bit just to be sure. And I agree about the last sentence; I'm going to tweak it. Thanks much for the help. It's very helpful to get a fresh set of eyes on it. --JaGatalk 05:23, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

Signpost report on the disambiguation project

I got this today, thought you would be interested. Cheers! bd2412 T 23:26, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Disambiguation for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. -Mabeenot

Thanks for thinking of me, but I'm done with that project. BTW I just submitted my bot request. I decided to put in the minimum edit count after all; it was requested a second time, and it does relieve my concerns about confusing/biting new editors. --JaGatalk 20:04, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Question

Since you're more familiar with Tobias Conradi and his myriad socks, I was wondering if you could take a look at this; I'm not sure if I'm just seeing things, but given Conradi's history I'd rather be sure. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 15:59, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

It doesn't look like Tobias to me. Tobias is obsessed with making all the articles in a category have the same title structure; most of his work centers around that. I've never seen Tobias fix a single disambig link, only create them. Of course, since I keep busting him in his geography endeavors, I've no doubt he's doing some side project, but this just doesn't appear close enough to his MO for me to think it's him. --JaGatalk 17:23, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
OK. It still seems obvious that it's not a new user, but glad to hear it's probably not him. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 18:17, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, this is definitely a sock of some sort. I don't see why we don't periodically sweep for various sockmasters like Tobias. I mean, why wait until you or I notice something suspicious, and then force us to figure out which one it is? You could probably even get a bot to do it... --JaGatalk 18:19, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
I have often thought the same thing, especially with people like Tobias and Brunodam. Oh well. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 18:31, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Socking?

I think that 182.182.114.195 (talk · contribs) is actually Mughal Lohar (talk · contribs) - both removed the same material, both editthe same articles, and Lohar has admitted to editing logged out in the past - I'm not sure how long to put up with this editor. He's had several warnings in the last couple of days, including yours. Any suggestions? Dougweller (talk) 16:36, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

I wrestled with it for a bit and then started an SPI here. There's no doubt in my mind it's Mughal Lohar; I'm just trying to figure out the best way to get him to edit responsibly. He would be a good contributor if he would just respect Wikipedia's policies. But it's become quite clear that warnings and discussion will not get his attention, so I'll try this. --JaGatalk 22:55, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for the note about Disambiguation

Hi,

Many thanks for the message about "Disambiguation" on my userpage. I have now made the link to Karen Taylor (comedian), which I hope meets requirements for disambiguation. ACEOREVIVED (talk) 15:18, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the message! The bot is new, so if you have any ways you think the message could be better, I'd love to hear it. Cheers, --JaGatalk 15:22, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

I'm also posting here about your bot too. Not to complain, but I was surprised to see it, & now have a bunch of questions, the answers to some of which you might want to add to the DPL bot user page:

 1. How long has this bot been running?
 2. How often do you run it?
 3. Do you run it on every article, or a specific group of them? What kind of group?
 4. Is linking to disambiguation pages a serious problem, or are you taking on this project just for "the fun of it"?

Thanks for your answers in advance, & thanks for the note. (I actually make an effort not to link to disambiguation pages.) -- llywrch (talk) 17:22, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi Llywrch, to answer your questions:

 1. Two days - it's still in trial.
 2. Once daily (although I'll run it a second time today for the trial, but that won't be the practice going forward)
 3. It runs against all articles
 4. Some will argue about how serious the problem is, but I'm definitely not doing this just for fun. Currently, there are over 650,000 links to disambiguation pages. In many cases (like an accidental link to British), the dablink is annoying but not much more - although the argument can be made that anything that degrades the user experience - like expecting a link to go to an article about British people but instead getting a disambig - is definitely a problem. But more importantly, many times it isn't obvious which article the author intended, which is indeed serious, because then a reader hits a dead end in their navigation. If we can get the author to let us know what they meant while they're still around, the article benefits hugely.

--JaGatalk 18:42, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Sounds reasonable. Thanks for the answers. -- llywrch (talk) 00:38, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Roald Dahl task force!

Hello, JaGa/Archive 11, We are wondering if you would like to join the Roald Dahl task force as you have contributed a lot to the articles in our scope. We hope you can join!

Your bot,...

Should exempt hatdab links because these are precisely needed to link to disambiguation pages; see other uses, for, about, other places, etc. etc. Your bot sends out lots of false positives.... Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:03, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

(Comment) Links in hatnotes should be ignored only if they point to a title or redirect that contains "(disambiguation)", as per WP:INTDABLINK; if not, they should be flagged. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 18:26, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
Right. And DPL bot is compliant with WP:INTDABLINK, so messages are not sent for dablinks marked as intentional. --JaGatalk 18:43, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
I think this is a useful bot, but would add that hatnote links should be ignored if the page linked to is in Category:Disambiguation pages (or contains the disambiguation tag), rather than simply based on the title. This is the case with Fourth dimension, which is redirected to from Fourth dimension (disambiguation). I was recently alerted in connection with this page. What do you think? Thanks. -- Trevj (talk) 08:37, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Nope, the "foo (disambiguation)" redirect is correct, as it 1) removes the page from the list of those requiring repair and 2) clearly alerts readers that they are being taken to a disambig page. If you really want the "(disambiguation)" to not show up in the hatnote, use the code and you will achieve that appearance without introducing the appearance of an error. Cheers! bd2412 T 14:27, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Sorry - perhaps I worded that ambiguously.
It's not the other way round. Does my comment now stand, or am I missing something obvious? Cheers. -- Trevj (talk) 15:34, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
I fixed 4th Dimension (software) per WP:INTDABLINK. It's confusing to intentionally employ a redirect instead of a direct link, but that is the proper syntax. --JaGatalk 15:37, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Right. Trevj, you are missing something, but I wouldn't say it's obvious. :) WP:INTDABLINK says that if you mean to link to a disambiguation page (for example, in a hatnote), you should always link to a title that includes the text "(disambiguation)", even if that's a redirect. So even though you were correct to link to the disambiguation page, you technically should have linked to the redirect, not to the actual page title.
JaGa, on further thought, it probably is not a good idea for the bot to notify editors in the situation described here; even though the link does need to be fixed, it is not a link to the wrong page, and a lot of editors will be confused or mislead by the bot's message. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 16:20, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
I don't think I could easily detect the See also intentional links, but I should be able to ignore the hatnote links. I can look into it (but I'm going to wait before I put any more work into this, it may get shot down altogether). --JaGatalk 16:45, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
As long as we're able to detect newly added disambig hatnote links, can't we just automatically fix them to redirect through the dab redirect? Then we wouldn't need to alert anyone about those. bd2412 T 16:51, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
We should definitely avoid the hatnote redirects, since Russ' bot can pick those up anyways. I'm also going to look into exempting See also sections. --JaGatalk 19:44, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Can you generate a list of hatnote dabs and See also dabs? Should be quick to fix manually. Cheers! bd2412 T 15:35, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

I've been thinking about it, and I think I'll create a sixth "type" to track hatnotes and See also dabs (assuming I can come up with a reliable way to identify See also dabs). Here's another thing: a user mentioned disambiguation pages themselves. A dablink in a disambiguation page is almost always also going to be a INTDABLINK, so I think I'll exclude disambiguation pages altogether as well, and also group them as "Type 6". I haven't decided whether I'll put Type 6 dablinks in the dashboard, or give them their own report. --JaGatalk 16:13, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Since we already have a listing of dab-to-dab dablinks (which currently tops out at under 7,500), I agree that there is no need to generate another listing for these. :-) Cheers! bd2412 T 18:23, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
Also, if it is not already doing so, definitely have it ignore links in merge tags. Some of those are coming up in the dab-to-dab lists. Cheers! bd2412 T 19:39, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
OK, thanks for setting things straight (both in my mind and correcting my edits). I know WP:INTDABLINK was posted earlier but I've only just now read it. I'll try to remember for the future. Cheers. -- Trevj (talk) 18:27, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

To stop getting messages from DPL bot, place the bots template anywhere on your talk page. Here's the syntax:

This will only block DPL bot and no other bots. --JaGatalk 01:36, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Ok thankyou. Some of the messages are accurate but some are unhelpful as I don't always know which link the previous editor is refering to, so I have to leave it open.andycjp (talk) 02:22, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Fixed a couple of river links, but I was unsure how to deal with the link to Y-Bridge, so I'll leave that to you. I wonder if an article about Y-bridges is in order? --JaGatalk 20:40, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
As you probably figured out, there is a disambiguation page. In doing that and constructing this article, it became apparent how big this subject is. I learned a lot. Meanwhile, I am hoping to get a DYK out of this. I agree, another article might be good. 7&6=thirteen () 20:44, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I'd never heard of Y-bridges before, and was glad for the pics. Interesting! Good luck on your DYK. --JaGatalk 20:46, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Rango (2011 film)

Hi, JaGa. The crazy 58.178-range anon IP who's been trying for months to impress a girl named Angelique Carrington (whose Facebook page he's linked to from here in the past) by adding her last name to that of a character in the movie is back — barely an hour after the protection template that you had, thankfully, implemented was lifted.

Experience shows us he will be relentless. Short of blocking the 58.178 range, would it be possible to semi-protect the page again? With thanks--Tenebrae (talk) 15:45, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Done Did a month this time. If they come back we will indeed look into range blocks. --JaGatalk 16:20, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Robert Sobukwe-Africanist

Hello. Recently a bot run by you, DPL_bot, posted a notification on my talk page about me resetting the wikilink for Africanist on the article about Robert Sobukwe to a disambiguation page. I thought that it is worthwhile getting back to you on this because of the peculiar situation with regards to what is meant by "Africanist" in the context of Sobukwe. Currently the only article for "Africanist" refers to a specialist in African studies. This is not the definition of "Africanist" that Sobukwe is refereed to so a link connecting him to African studies in this particular political context is not correct. Even though he did teach the subject at one stage. The unfortunately the type of "Africanist" that he should be connected to in a political context does not yet exist. Therefore in an effort to avoid it being misleading I thought it best to set it to a disambiguation page.--Discott (talk) 16:22, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Well, I definitely respect that position. You could also create a red link, which might spur the creation of the article. Regardless, though, DPL bot won't bother you about it again - unless someone changes the link, and you change it back. I don't expect that to happen, but either way please feel free to delete the DPL bot messages, or opt-out altogether. Thanks, --JaGatalk 17:54, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

DAB Challenge & points

I have just being disambiguating a load of links (proof) for the challenge, but dab solver hasn't given me any points for my hard work. It does normally, but today hasn't been giving me them. Have you got any idea why? Rcsprinter (constabulary) 18:03, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

The replication lag was over 1 hour, indicated by "(as of XX minutes ago)" in the upper right of the box. Since all your edits were done within that window, the Toolserver didn't see any of them yet. Dab solver includes a real-time points estimator which attempts to fill in the gap between Dab Challenge updates (usually hourly). — Dispenser 18:59, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, replag is my constant bane. It looks like it's caught up now. --JaGatalk 23:14, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Index pages >> disambiguation

FYI: I have requested experts to clean up the mess of the index pages. I guess that an expert from a related Wikiproject has more knowledge about the index-page, hence (s)he could fix and evaluate the contents and disambig-links far quicker then we can (at least: quicker then I can). I have put the request on every index page down to those with 10 links. No clue if it works, but it would not harm to try... Night of the Big Wind talk 20:09, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

Well, it's certainly worth a shot, but I'll be happily surprised if much comes of it. One of the problems with indices and lists is that people rarely feel any ownership of them, so if that index or list needs maintenance no one feels it's their problem. I think you're right in saying our best hope is the related WikiProjects, though. If they don't assume responsibility, likely no one will. --JaGatalk 20:44, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

I'm still have your user page watchlisted from when we were dealing with that move vandal and so noticed your removal of the CorenSearchBot warning. You flagged my edits to National Transonic Facility incorrectly. One link was to a dab page (which is what I assume this bot is looking for, though the messages left on user pages could be much clearer here), and another was to a redirect. Redirects aren't DABs and there is no need to flag them.--RadioFan (talk) 17:23, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
The flagging was based on this edit, when you created the National Transonic Facility article with a A-6 disambiguation redirect, and this edit, where you added a large section including a link to the disambiguation page Michael Kahn. --JaGatalk 17:37, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
Again, that's not clear from the text left on user pages. Please make the messaging clearer on what specifically the bot has found that needs to be improved.--RadioFan (talk) 17:40, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, creation of a page with this name is blocked? or may be there is some other technical problem. So, I have created a stub named Tariq Babur. But the html reference on which this stub is based tells the name of this person as Tariq Mahmood Khan Babur. Challenge leaderboard

The bot is not updating User:JaGa/Short leaderboard, nor the Toolserver one. Dabsolver seems to be keeping up on points though, and the replication lag is 0 seconds. I can't figure out why. Is there any reason for this? Rcsprinter (warn) 20:03, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Due to some random Toolserver error or outage, the update script was hung indefinitely, blocking all future attempts to run the script. I just had to clear out the failed run manually, but since I've been traveling etc I wasn't around to do it - and probably wouldn't have noticed the problem just now if not for your note. Thanks for letting me know! --JaGatalk 16:15, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

The Telegraph

Hi,

Your bot left me a message about The Telegraph, the link to which I had included in my edit of Yesterday (song). The link actually was intended, sort of, but I must confess I didn’t check where it leads to. Which is the disambiguation page.

The source for a bit of what I wrote and quoted is something called The Telegraph, but apparently there is no article on it, and I could not really find out what it is. Apparently something not available in print media? So I don’t know how to improve the link.

I understand that the message came to me from an “automated service”. If it comes to all authors after creating a link that goes to a disambiguation page, I think it sounds like a very welcome thing, alerting writers/contributors that they should be a bit more careful with these links.

Yours, Apanuggpak (talk) 19:35, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

(Talk page stalker) The reference Apanuggpak inserted contains a link to a page on http://www.telegraph.co.uk, and the The Telegraph disambiguation page mentions that this website belongs to The Daily Telegraph. Mystery solved! I guess it is available in print media, after all. :-) --R'n'B (call me Russ) 22:10, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Error in notification

Hello, the bot notified me of the disambiguation links at criminology in error. I made absolutely no change to the content of the page; all I did was a bit of history splitting, which probably confused the bot. I like the concept of the bot, though! Graham>87 10:49, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, I really have no way of detecting the difference between a history merge and normal editing. DPL bot took this edit as an "addition" of dablinks. If you do a lot of history merges, you might want to opt out of the messages altogether. Cheers, --JaGatalk 16:12, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps the bot can check the dates of the two edits, and if one edit has a date before January 2002, ignore the diff? That should take care of all but the most esoteric cases. The bot only reacted to the above edit because of its high revision ID number, due to the fact that I'd just imported it into the database from the Nostalgia Wikipedia. Normal history merges and history splits shouldn't cause any problems. I do a lot of history merging, but I've probably imported most of the necessary edits from the Nostalgia Wikipedia by now, so I shouldn't get the message too often ... and I don't mind fixing the disambiguation links! Graham87 10:50, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

I just received a notice from your bot

abut a pseudolink I had set up at Tomás Romero. First of all, I would like to continue receiving such notifications (there was a way to NOT get them, I think), because I need to know about these. I knew the link to John Fitzgerald was not going to really work, but I was in the middle of writing an article about my John Fitzgerald and wanted to see what else was there so I could figure out what to name my article. I've settled on John Fitzgerald (soldier), though am not that happy with it. I mean, how long until another JF, soldier comes along? In any case, it was Christmas Eve, I figured who would have so little a life (besides me) to be doing this stuff on X-Mas Eve and the Day its self. Foolish me - bots don't have that sort of life. Do they? So "Cheers" Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 18:56, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

Looks good, not a single disambig! Cheers, --JaGatalk 21:41, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

I am decidedly out on a limb here and have never directly addressed a bot. As near I understand your query; I would argue that my insertion of the term Work in the article Ejection Fraction was definitely intentional. I think that you would agree that driving blood out of the heart 60-80 times per minute for 70-80 years entails a lot of work. Cardiac mathematics is presently being pursued with supercomputers in many great institutions worldwide. I believe that Wiki needs to document these advances encyclopedically as they emerge. --lbeben 02:10, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi, and thanks for the note. The problem is, work points to a "Did you mean..." list of articles. The bot is asking you to make the link go to an article instead. For instance, ejection fraction also had a link to the disambiguation page ventriculography. But it shouldn't have linked there, so I changed it to point to Cardiac ventriculography. Similarly, for work I chose to point the link to Cardiac output using the following piped syntax:
forward performance work of both the right and left ventricles
So now "work" still shows but it links to the article Cardiac output. Hope this helps! --JaGatalk 21:55, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

DPLbot message

Hi, JaGa, and Happy New Year. The previous two messages suggest that the "such links are almost always unintended" language is confusing to many users. Might I suggest that instead, you could say, "When referring to an ambiguous term such as "{}", it is almost always better to link to an article on one of the specific uses of that term, rather than to the disambiguation page, which is just a list of those more specific article titles." --R'n'B (call me Russ) 14:45, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Hey Russ, Happy New Year to you too. Also, thanks for taking care of the message above. Yeah, I'm continually trying to make that message less confusing. So you think I should drop in one of the actual dablinks they created? I like the idea, and it would certainly be easy to implement. But how should I deal with it when I'm telling them about three dablinks in an article, like here, or multiple articles, like here?
Yeah, I see your point. You could just leave that out, and say "When referring to an ambiguous term, it is almost always better to link to an article on one of the specific uses of that term, rather than to the disambiguation page, which is just a list of those more specific article titles." --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:18, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

DPL bot and broken redirect

Hi and thanks for keeping DPLbot running. If more people heeded its output then Wikipedia would be a better place, but I've come across one oddity. I received a notification after I created a redirect Old revision of Bluefin tuna (disambiguation)Bluefin tuna. It's probably because a later edit by another user added a template to Bluefin tuna (disambiguation), turning my #RedirectBluefin tuna from a redirect into a rather untidy numbered list entry with a link to dab. Presumably DPLbot spotted that the current version contains a link which isn't an effective redirect, and that the text Bluefin tuna first appeared in my edit. I'm not sure whether it's possible and worthwhile to handle this sort of case specially. Perhaps it's just a symptom of the fact that redirects and templates don't mix at a more fundamental level. Thanks for listening anyway, Certes (talk) 12:41, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Hello

So you are the one who created this site?Mark (talk) 03:40, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

I had trouble fixing the reference to Kindle in this new article, as well. However, I think I fixed it once and for all. If not, please let me know and I will research into this again.Bill Pollard (talk) 15:03, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

There was still a link to Kindle in a reference; I went ahead and took care of it. Cheers, --JaGatalk 17:06, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Bot

Can you tell DPL bot to stop bothering me?WBJB003 | talk 21:03, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Yep, no problem. Just follow these opt-out instructions. --JaGatalk 21:19, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Your DPL Bot

Thanks for sending your little fellow to sniff over my editing of Cottage hospital, I've fixed the links, very helpful. Best to you. Richard Avery (talk) 22:52, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks much for the kind note! Cheers, --JaGatalk 04:35, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Yeah your bot checked out my completely unrelated editing...very cool. hɑzʎ ɗɑƞ 17:46, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Sorry I do not understand well what the matter is, the page is very long and I do not understand much... is it wrong to give the link as I did? ThE AOC is an Aviation officer, is he not? --Gian piero milanetti (talk) 19:26, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

DPL bot

I really appreciate your efforts with this bot, but it warned me for adding dablinks when I had only reverted vandalism on the article. Could you please improve the detection algorithm so that these false positives do not occur? Logan Talk Contributions 15:21, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi Logan. I already filter out most vandalism-reversion, but it's impossible for me to catch all of it. I see you're a Huggle user. You may want to opt out of the messages, as they certainly aren't intended to go after vandal fighters. --JaGatalk 16:00, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Actually, the auto-generated comment on your edit inspired me; with some work I've made it possible to analyze the user's comment when they create the dablink. Now, if that comment contains "revert", "vandal", "undid revision", or "rvv" (all case insensitive), it ignores the edit and sends no message. That should clear up even more of the false positives. --JaGatalk 23:16, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Awesome! :) I was going to suggest looking in the edit summary for certain keywords, but I guess that we thought alike. Logan Talk Contributions 01:24, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps "restore" would be a good keyword to check for too. That would have prevented the false positive I just had when I was tidying up after another editor. Keep up the good work! --Deskford (talk) 14:50, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
Done Excellent suggestion, thanks. --JaGatalk 18:44, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
