Invitation to join the Ten Year Society
Dear JSFarman/Archive 11,
I'd like to extend a cordial invitation to you to join the Ten Year Society, an informal group for editors who've been participating in the Wikipedia project for ten years or more.
Best regards, Chris Troutman (talk) 20:30, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
- Chris! For some reason I couldn't respond to your comment until now. BUT! I can't believe it's been 11 years. Seems like it was only yesterday that I was reverted for the first time. Thank you! You are one of the reasons I have stuck around. xo! JSFarman (talk) 15:55, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

Neal Francis
Thank you for your help with the Neal Francis article. I just added some information about his most recent album Sentimental Garbage. I really appreciate your assistance on this! TenAtoms (talk) 18:46, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
- My pleasure, @TenAtoms. I'm a fan! I just did another edit and added a couple more references and resubmitted it. Thanks for persevering (and for writing the article)! JSFarman (talk) 00:34, 11 March 2023 (UTC)
New Draft of american musician
Hi :JSFarman I have written and edited this draft about a New York artist, "David Gonzalez" who is a bit difficult to classify (musician, poet, actor, teacher ....?) I have found references from independent sources of great relevance such as the New York Times, Washington Post and other news. I have seen that you are on the AfC participant list, and you have specialized in music. I ask you the great favor if you can review this article, thank you very much. Together we all make a better Wikipedia Miskito89 (talk) 10:02, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Miskito89. He meets notability based on the sources you added, but the article is hard to follow. I totally get that he is hard to classify but the article can be organized in a way that will help readers understand what he does/has done. I started a copy edit and added some section headings. (Of course you can edit as you see fit!) I think writing the article chronologically will make it simpler. Also, keep the language plain, and refer to him as "Gonzalez," not "David."
- For some examples, check out articles on other multi-disciplinary artists such as Nick Cave or David Byrne. If you are listing his collaborations, be specific about *how* he collaborated. For example, what did he do with Jessye Norman? Why did he receive grants? (For which discipline?) What was he commissioned for? (Music? Poetry? Play?)
- It's too difficult for me to review the article in its current state, but if you decide to do an edit ping me back and I will take another look. Thank you for asking and thanks for the contribution! JSFarman (talk) 02:51, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi@JSFarman, thank you very much for your quick reply. I am finding the Nick Cave article much more enjoyable and looking forward to reading it. I think the problem with David Gonzalez's article is that it is too flat and like a CV. There are some very interesting interviews where Gonzalez tells part of his life, how he started telling stories, and anecdotes that may be worthwhile. I'm going to try to find all the information we need and enter it and when the article is more rounded I'll get back to you. Yes, the good thing about Wikipedia is that it´s a collective work, and every time people collaborate with more professionalism. Thank you very much again Miskito89 (talk) 17:00, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
Hello again JSFarman, thank you very much for giving me guidance to improve David Gonzalez's article. I have introduced new data about his works and about his role as an artist (musician, poet, actor...)
I have also found dates and made a chronology of his most important shows, I have also found out in which way he collaborated with other musicians and in which concrete projects and in which theaters, etc.
I have also included some personal anecdotes extracted from his interviews. And some outstanding phrase or quote from the NYT and some poet.
I hope you can review it, that now it will be more enjoyable and easier to read and worthy of Wikipedia.
Something that I still think is not completely solved is the title; as there are so many people (athletes, politicians etc) with the name David Gonzalez, what do you think should be the concept by which it appears in parentheses?
David Gonzalez (artist) or David Gonzalez (multi-disciplinary artist)? Thank you very much for your help
--Miskito89 (talk) 18:20, 14 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi -Miskito89. The article is better -- thanks for the edit -- but the language is still flowery and not neutral. I didn't go through the entire article but it appears that not everything is cited. His comments in interviews are not independent - you should use them to verify sparingly.
- I did not realize you were submitting the article as a disclosed paid editor; the process of reviewing paid articles is time-consuming and the length of the article is challenging.
- That said, I think multi-disciplinary artist is fine for the disambiguation. Happy editing! JSFarman (talk) 16:06, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
Pasticceria (il) Boccione
Hallo JSFarman, I moved the article about the Pasticceria Boccione, removing the article "il", which in reality is non existent. I was actually shocked to find an english wikipedia article about a place I've been going to since I was a kid, but such is the way the world goes. Actually this is not a "Pasticceria", but a "Forno", since their products are quite rustic, but I suppose that the hags working there would not accept that change, and it's better to have them as friends than as enemies. Ciao! Alex2006 (talk) 20:47, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
- Oh HI!!! I just saw the page move and thank you for that but thank you also for this message -- it is cracking me up. I wrote the article because I was staying at a flat in the Jewish Ghetto and Pasticceria Boccione was right across the street. (I went there every day for a week and not once did any of the workers even nod a hello; it was so fantastically punk.) Thank you x 1000000000, and so great to cross paths.JSFarman (talk) 21:14, 16 March 2023 (UTC)

Deleted a little too much
I restored some of what you deleted here: OK, so he couldn't have signed either of those bands to Chrysalis because neither of them signed to Chrysalis. But that didn't require deleting everything in the infobox ... he still worked for Chrysalis, still co-owned the Dragonfly and his death still has possible connections to the Brown-Goldman killings. Daniel Case (talk) 17:45, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Daniel Case. I didn't mean to remove where he worked from the infobox! Thanks for restoring the info and for leaving me this message. JSFarman (talk) 19:46, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
Hello Julie. Since I know that you are an expert on music industry BS, I wonder whether you would be willing to take a look at this gigantic train wreck. Is this performer notable? If not, the article should go. If so, then somebody needs to take a machete to it. Cullen328 (talk) 01:01, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- Wow. Hi Cullen328. Did you notice that almost none of the references are legit? I've never heard of her and I'm pretty well versed in obscure-indie-alt-punk of the 1980s. I can't find anything significant via a reliable source but I am very entertained! (It is a ridiculous article.) JSFarman (talk)
- I am stupid about all popular music since about the late 80s, early 90s time frame when I gave up on trying to discover new acts, and started checking out the new big stars six months or a year after their breakthrough hits. Marrying a deaf woman tends to limit one's exposure, although my wife enjoys the visuals and the deep bass lines. That relegated my opinions to the ash heap of history. Are you willing to nominate this article for deletion if you think that is the right course? The main editor has moved on to other problematic music bio edits. Cullen328 (talk) 06:36, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- One person's "stupid" is another person's "blissfully oblivious."
- I can't get myself to bring it to AfD; I did not spend long enough looking for citations. If they exist they are likely to be offline and I didn't check any of my offline databases. I *did* tag it, though, and will do more research if someone else doesn't get to it first. JSFarman (talk) 18:26, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- Cullen328, I did take it to AfD because so much of it appears to be fake and I find that so troubling. JSFarman (talk) 03:34, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
- In this article I would like to know which references you believed were not legit. Every one of those citations was legit, and the accusation that they were not, is false, and needs to be backed up with evidence. That personal opinion dismisses publications as not legit, when they are, is very unprofessional, and probably breaks libel laws. I would like you to be specific on this as I bring it to the process for undeletion, which was based on opinion rather than facts and a blatant disregard for an editors work. So please back them, with explanation. Brooklyn Smith (talk) 20:44, 7 May 2023 (UTC)

Cullen328 (talk) 06:36, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hello I wrote the article on Roxanne Fontana, and would like to know why the article of this very notable performer, who was produced by Jack Douglas is a 'gigantic trainwreck'. Please be specific. Also I notice that you stated in your discussion of this take down that you found 'some videos'. This artist who has been reviewed in top publications, has approximately 60 videos on channels that belong to her record company as well as fans posting them. She only played night clubs in the 1980s (which you state you are well-versed in), but did not make any records until 1999,with her first album produced by legendary drummer from the Rascals Dino Danelli. What specific problem did you have with the article that made you state, without research to the main editor that it should be removed. I look forward to your reply or apology. Brooklyn Smith (talk) 20:37, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Brooklyn Smith. Please refer to the deletion discussion for information. A notification about the article's nomination for deletion was left on your talk page on March 24. The discussion was closed as delete on March 31. JSFarman (talk) 01:26, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
- Yes that discussion was viewed, of course, which led me to this discussion. Please answer the question as to why you thought the citations were not legit, and why you thought the article was "fake". It is apparent that the other editor you discussed this with, who brought you on board for your expertise, referred to the 1980s. However, you did not read the article properly (just for "entertainment" apparently and not academically) to see that THAT in itself was an error as the first public release of music is 1999. Nor did he correct you on that misinformation which began with him misreading the article, yet wanting to take a "machete" to it even if the person was notable. You stated that none of the citations were legit. SHINDIG MAGAZINE HAS A CURRENT READERSHIP OF 170,000, DIGITAL CIRCULATION OF 37,000; PRINT 26,000. As your expertise is the 1980s, and admittedly San Francsico Punk Rock, can you admit you made a mistake on this and contribute to a discussion with Liz offering to undelete it please. HeartMath Institute
Hello, I noticed you recently rejected my article for creation on the HeartMath Institute, citing concerns about neutrality. Writing a neutral article about pseudoscience is difficult, and there's often a tension between accurately portraying the scientific consensus and being fair to the alternative view. I attempted to model my article after the articles on parapsychology and energy medicine, which are the main areas of research the organization engages in. I think my article read quite similarly to these existing ones, but I can understand why that would seem biased as they are unambiguous in conveying the scientific consensus.
I removed a few of the sentences that I think may have made it seem slanted, and I would ask you to reconsider the article with those edits. If it's still problematic, I'd appreciate some more specific feedback on how it can be improved. An early version of this draft was marked for deletion because someone erroneously thought it was self-promotion, which is part of the reason I added the contextualizing statements I did. I'm not sure where the middle ground is. Chase Kanipe (talk) 18:58, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Chase Kanipe. How about we just leave it at this: HeartMath Institute doesn't meet notability. But thanks for your thoughtful message. JSFarman (talk) 19:41, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

Review draft page?
Greetings, JSFarman. You reached out & were super helpful a couple years ago when I added a page (something I rarely do) on Sheila Schwartz. I am drafting a new page on another unfortunately un-Wikipedia'ed writer, the late great Maria Thomas. It has some unfinished parts, and I have reached out to her son to look at it before publishing, but if you could take also a look and share any thoughts or make any improvements, I would appreciate that. Many thanks & best. Sullidav (talk) 12:44, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- PS - two things I'd particularly appreciate for you to look at, one stylistic and one technical. My draft switches back and forth between her pen name and her two real life names depending on what it is describing. That seems weird but alternatives (eg, ", writing as maria Thomas,") didn't work well either. Second, infobox will include either her pen name or her married name, depending on whether it's type person or type writer, but she was both a person and a writer and having all three names (those plus birth name) in the box would be better if that's possible. Sullidav (talk) Sullidav (talk) 12:53, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- PPS - on issue #1 my partial solution was to use a lot more of "she" and "her" than I otherwise would, but that's not a total fix. On #2, to see the problem, change the infobox type back and forth between "person" and "writer" and preview the result -- with "person" you lose "pen name" and with "writer" you lose "other name". Thx. Sullidav (talk) 15:45, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Sullidav, so good to hear from you again! Thanks for introducing me to Maria Thomas (and thanks for writing another great article-to-be).
- The naming issue is complicated! The way you've written it works, and I would stick with the writer info box. My only idea otherwise would be to include her birth name old-skool maiden name style (née Roberta Thomas) in the first sentence and then maybe just use either Worrick or her pen name? To me, ultimately, it's all about clarity. (I like that you included that she began using her husband's name after she was married.)
- Your style is great, although you might want to give it another read for NPOV before you publish it. I'm happy to take another look too. And happy to have a new writer to read!JSFarman (talk) 20:43, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- Many thanks JSFarman for looking and for these helpful thoughts and encouraging words.
- Contacting you made me think about parallels between Sheila Schwartz and Maria Thomas - women writers who were wrongly not on Wikipedia, Stegner Fellows at Stanford, lots of fiction published in prestigious academic / literary reviews for virtually no money, died far too young. MT had more of a breakout moment, but still.
- She's an extraordinary writer, I think, and well worth reading. I'd start with the short stories (CTAASYM).
- The other thing that boggled my mind (and my draft page gets out of control in one place to demonstrate this point, but I was amazed so I kept going and going) is how many US newspapers reviewed serious fiction in the 1980s. There were dozens of different reviews of her books, it must have been over 100 US newspapers consistently publishing lots of reviews of serious books. The Anderson, S.C. paper reviewed one of her books! Now it feels like about five do that.
- Hope you're well, wherever you are. That's Pacific-ish, I imagine based on some page of yours I read at some point-- and I am not asking you where! Sullidav (talk) 00:25, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Sullidav (talk)! I just ordered Come to Africa and Save Your Marriage. When I was googling for an (independent bookseller) link I had the same kind of wtf experience that you did; there are reviews *everywhere*. Major dailies, alt weeklies, monthlies, magazines (literary and otherwise). I'm blown away. At long last a reason to miss the 80s. (Also: how could she be completely new to me?) So tragic that she died so young.
- I just finished Crying in H Mart which pretty much killed me. Did you read it? Waiting on the new Lorrie Moore! (She is possibly my favorite writer.)(Definitely in the Top 10 with Dan Chaon.)
- I'm in LA. Not that you asked. :) I think you are in the midwest??? (Thanks for making my day.) JSFarman (talk) 21:25, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, JSFarman. I have had laptop issues (I thought power cord, but it's apparently the motherboard. Grr.) so have not been on Wikipedia for about a week.
- I'm in DC. But originally from Cleveland Heights, home of Dan Chaon. Have not read H Mart but you are not the first to recommend it to me. Will add it to my to-read pile. Sullidav (talk) 21:15, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- I am close to done with Draft:Maria Thomas. I will probably read through and tweak one more time tomorrow, then submit. If you have a chance to take another look for NPOV and other issues, that would be welcome. But your help already has been great. Sullidav (talk) 02:09, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
- New article is up, if you want to see: Maria Thomas. Sullidav (talk) 11:59, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
New pages patrol newsletter
Hello JSFarman,
Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!
October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.
PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.
Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.
Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Peter Fitzpatrick (investor and founder)
Draft:Peter Fitzpatrick (investor)
Hi,
I try to submit this article: I submitted it wrong because of watching YouTube videos so the proofreader suggested to use my nickname, not the name like PeterFitzpatrick. So I used the guidelines that the Wiki proofreader send me (many thanks to them), and I also spoke in Wiki live chat that there might be a few reasons:
- Try not mentioning Linkedin and External links; 2. If I can't separate Peter Fitzpatrick from his business (it's hard using reliable media because most of the articles about the fashion app), try writing about the other person (better if it's historical people, 80th or earlier) - I participate on Wiki because of university practice . So, I'd also like to ask your advice as a reviewer before re-submitting with right external links. Thank you in advance.
~Innosomnia (talk) 18:07, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi ~Innosomnia - Reliable, independent sources are needed for him to meet the inclusion criteria. The references need to be about Peter Fitzpatrick, not his business. Anything that is related to him is not independent (ie LinkedIn). External links should be used only in the infobox and the external links section.
- You would probably have an easier time writing about the app, which seems to have gotten a lot of attention. If you find valid sources for Fitzpatrick, be careful that the article does not read like a resume or CV.
- Apologies if I am being less-than-helpful - I am not 100% sure of what you are after (but I will take a look at the draft again)! Thanks for the message.JSFarman (talk) 20:46, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi @JSFarman. Someone suggested that change "Label" to "Distributor" or something. Your comments are appreciated. Regards. 2001:D08:2941:613:17AD:95F7:2728:56E1 (talk) 13:07, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for the message. Thanks for asking! I just read through the section twice and I still don't see where the suggestion is. (I think label should remain, but I am old, so. Smiley face.) JSFarman (talk) 18:43, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Request to have syntax errors fixed after mass message delivery
Hi there! In a recent mass message that you sent, there were multiple syntax errors (Linter errors, specifically, including obsolete tags and inline tags wrapping block content). Can you please visit Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Tasks and ask the helpful editors there to apply these same fixes to all of the pages that the message was delivered to? And if you will be composing future messages from the boilerplate text that you used for this one, please make a note of these updates. I'll be happy to take a look at anything you have written before you send it out. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:06, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hello Jonesey95, thank you! I was actually just leaving you a message to ask what I did wrong. (I once sent out a mass message that was missing a closing bracket. That was fun.) I would be so psyched if you would take a look at future messages. I am not good at this. In case it wasn't obvious. Thank you beyond! JSFarman (talk) 22:11, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
- No worries. I have done the same sort of thing myself. It is a real sad moment when you realize that you have made the same error on 400 pages. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:46, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Nile Rodgers
Hi! I found you by looking at the view history of the Nile Rodgers page, because I was admiring the writing! I have been involved in Wikipedia for quite some time and do organizing for Meta:Wikimedia LGBT+ and Queering Wikipedia 2023 recently. I will be in L.A. towards the end of Feb, and I'd love to meet up and discuss Wikipedia and writing if you are around. My email is dorothy@wmlgbt.org Hexatekin (talk) 21:38, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Hexatekin and thank you! Very cool to meet you. I will email you, but definitely, let's get together when you are here! So psyched that you reached out, and so psyched to meet you. Julie JSFarman (talk) 21:49, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
