Remble

Hi Julie,

I just wanted to thank you for creating an article on Remble, since he's been owed one for well over a year now. I also wanted to mention that there are some (racist, IMO) editors on here who have fought to keep articles for newer / rising rap talent off the site, including Remble. Maybe you'll encounter them? Maybe they'll be placated by the LA Times feature about him.

Pages for Remble in the past had been proposed and rejected, despite him having millions of plays on huge platforms like Spotify, Youtube and TikTok. I'm not an editor or an expert on wikipedia and don't care to be, but hopefully there are eds on here can address the clearly racist gatekeeping that goes on here.

Said differently: it really, really shouldn't take an LA Times feature about an artist who already had a huge fanbase to get them a page on here. Especially when there are literally thousands of pages for middling indie bands nobody listens to, obscure anime characters and Family Guy episodes.

To be clear: I don't work for Remble or know him. I'm just a cranky music fan and reader of Wikipedia. I like his music okay and was annoyed when I tried to read more about him on here only to find editors on here actively worked to keep him off the site.

--172.119.3.160 (talk) 16:16, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi 172.119.3.160 and thank you for the message. I get excited when I read about people in the NY Times or the LA Times and discover they aren't on Wikipedia; at this point I almost reflexively start articles. (I just created a sandbox for a musician named Silvana Estrada; there was a lengthy piece in the New York Times this morning. I was similarly inspired to write Leni Sorenson, Nai-Ni Chen, Hester Diamond and Thomas K. Gilhool and others that I'm not remembering at the moment.)
Before I start an article I always check on notability. I was made aware of Remble because of the LA Times story that ran over the weekend but then found the John Caramanica review, then XXL and Complex and HNHH and Pitchfork. (The Pitchfork review was racist, IMHO - the author wrote that he was commercially palatable, which I interpreted as "he will be successful because he annunciates and white kids will understand." Then again I am not a Pitchfork fan.) Remble stood out to me because of his humor; he is funny even when he is expressing or documenting the grotesque.
I have encountered bias of every kind on Wikipedia. When it comes to rap/hip-hop, we need to reassess the reliability of sources; many of the outlets that cover Black artists are not considered reliable based on criteria that is probably no longer applicable. (No one in the US other thathan maybe the NY Times, the Atlantic and the New Yorker has fact checkers anymore.)
I just took a look at the draft you submitted, and at that point there were not a lot of reliable, independent sources available. I think the guidelines need to change re: social media and social media stats, but right now they are not an indicator of notability. BUT! Your draft is great; it's so well-written. I hope you will contribute to the live article, and please ping me if you submit another article -- I can review and/or work with you on it.
Thank you again for the message! I'm cranky too, it means a lot. JSFarman (talk) 17:13, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

A kitten for you!

Hey, why you want to delete Starscixn article?

Abcfriends (talk) 15:31, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for the kitten! But Starscixn does not appear to meet notability based on the references currently used. They need to be independent and via a reliable source. That the songs exist (and are on Spotify) does not go towards notability. You can contest the deletion.

LA to FA

Hey, JSFarman! I appreciate all the enthusiasm you had for the idea :) it doesn't like we have the necessary editor count to go ahead with the zoom call, but I'd be happy to collaborate with you on-wiki if you want to try and tackle this! Take care, and thank you again for all the energy :D theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 01:54, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

Such a drag. BUT! I would love to collaborate with you; I somehow missed the FA class. I'm all about the LA idea for Wikipedia LA but there are so many articles I've started and want to complete. I've been working on the publicist Pat Kingsley off and on since 2017. There are a ton of references -- her life has been incredibly well documented and her story is great - I would be ecstatic to get it to GA status. Or even finished. (It's here, just in case you want to contribute. Smiley face.)
Anyway, thank you so much - if you're up for trying the LA-FA editing project again I'm up for helping to recruit people. AND if you're at all interested in becoming involved with Wikimedians of Los Angeles we would be thrilled to have you. Looking forward to crossing paths again! WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Brent Swanner

Thank you for being kind and for offering to help me. I am new and the "Brent Swanner" page is only a few days old. I feel like I am being rushed to get it perfect and wish I could have some more time before all my work is just deleted.

Should I delete CD Baby from the Discography.

In my heart I know that "Brent Swanner" and "Testify (Christian band)" have the notoriety to be on Wikipedia. They were very popular between 1996 and 2005 and I can remember seeing articles & album reviews in Christian Magazines and their name in Gospel Music Charts. But all of that seems to be gone from the internet now. And when I do get close to something I run into a Pay Wall.

I would love your help. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 113andathird (talkcontribs) 11:50, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi, hello. I have access to some offline databases - I'll see what I can find. Are you a member of a library? Often library card holders can access digital collections. (I'm in Los Angeles.) Also - although I'm not sure what the criteria is -- after a certain length of time you can use the Wikipedia Library, which is a fantastic resource.
If his records weren't specifically issued by CD Baby (which is unlikely) than yes, you should remove it as the label and replace it with "independent."
I requested that we draftify your article, which means moving it out of the mainspace so you can work on it. Let's see what happens and we can take it from there.
So glad to get your message and so glad you're here! — Preceding unsigned comment added by JSFarman (talkcontribs) 12:35, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much for all your help. I have resigned to the fact that the deletion of "Brent Swanner" is probably inevitable. But I am very confident in Testify (Christian Band). Info is there, its just hard to find. "Testify" is a broad key word and the timing of their success makes it difficul. Are paid sites allowed? There are a lot of articles on NewsArchive but they are behind a Pay Wall.

There is a magazine called "The Singing News". Everything before 2015 seems to be deleted from their website. There was also a magazine called "The Gospel Voice" that I can remember had some album reviews and a couple/few articles but I can't find it anymore. I guess they went out of of business. Maybe "Brent Swanner" can be re-directed to "Testify (Christian band)? I removed CD Baby, thank you.113andathird (talk) 23:13, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Jamee Ranta (Draft)

Hello JS Farman. Im editing an Articles for Creation submission or Draft for Jamee Ranta that is up for resubmission. On the page you mentioned not being able to find a suitable citation to proove notabilty. Recently the subject was featured in a Billboard article and I think this should suffice to have the article accepted. Would you agree? I've removed a lot of the hyperbole and content and reformatted the article to meet wiki's requirements. Mistephake (talk) 17:14, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Mistephake. The Billboard article is fantastic but the rest of the references are weak. The articles about Collin Tilley don't provide extensive coverage, the Variety article is light (and the title was inaccurate), the podcasts don't go towards notability, IMDb isn't considered valid (content is user-generated), and LA Voyager is definitely not a reliable source. That said, she should meet the inclusion criteria based on her Grammy nomination (if we apply the criteria for NMUSIC). Please resubmit and note a COI if it exists. Thanks. New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello JSFarman,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 811 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 846 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello JSFarman,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 13806 articles, as of 22:00, 11 December 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello JSFarman,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.

Clarity on Resubmission for Twisted Pine

Hi JSFarman,

I represent the musical artist, Twisted Pine and we have received several rejections from you on our article submission. We're eager to wrap up this project and would love a bit more clarity on what we need to edit in order to have the submission approved by you. Draft:Twisted Pine

We are more than happy to make any changes necessary; we're just looking for more specifics so we can expedite the process.

Thank you so much!

Abbie and the team at Loudmouth Mgmt Abbieduquette (talk) 12:30, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi Abbieduquette. I've only reviewed the article once, but beside the point - if I reviewed it now I would still decline it based on notability. That said, I am not well-versed in bluegrass. Perhaps Anne Delong will review it? She has specific expertise in the genre. Thanks for the message. JSFarman (talk) 15:52, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! So are you saying we need to add more references? Or press links? @Anne Delong would you be able to review? Thank you! Abbieduquette (talk) 14:28, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi again Abbieduquette,
Yes; from my perspective the band does not have the coverage required to establish notability. (Press links and references are the same thing.)
Keep in mind that references need be via reliable sources and provide extensive coverage. They also need to be independent -- Glide is mostly an interview and Signature Sounds is the label. I don't know Folk Radio but the article that it includes is not bylined, which is a red flag for me. NPR Live Sessions is performance (and finding Twisted Pine requires a search), the NPR Heavy Rotation coverage is one paragraph long. Ricky Meir and Rachel Sumner are previous members of the band and refs are from blog posts. Country Music Time also appears to be a blog. Bluegrass Today may be good, and the Globe is great but brief. I don't know if the prizes will get them to notability but I am not familiar with them. I mentioned Anne but I am not sure she's reviewing these days. You might take a look at other articles related to bluegrass musicians and see who the contributors are for additional guidance. Hope that I have been of some help. JSFarman (talk) 16:18, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

Please help me to review

Hello Julie, I hope you are doing well. I am glad to have a chance to contact to you. These days I am more active on Wikipedia. I am editing and creating new articles here in English Wikipedia. But I see now it takes long for articles to get reviewed. I think that's because of the large number of articles are being created than before.

I would like to ask your help to advise me some to improve the quality of the articles I have created so they can get reviewed further. I am listing three articles under this message for your review and feedback so you can check them out when you have time for them.

I look forward to receiving your suggestions Thank you so much

Articles to review: 1. Utkirbek Qahhorov 2. Honored artist of Uzbekistan 3. Ben Bu Cihana Sigmazam Lostinniagarafalls (talk) 16:42, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

(by talk reader) @Lostinniagarafalls: I think you need to read WP:COI and meta:TOU and consider if editing Wikipedia is something you should quit. Chris Troutman (talk) 19:36, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

Thank you so much for taking your time for questions that was not asked from you. I appreciate your feedback. Thank you Lostinniagarafalls (talk) 19:39, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

Lostinniagarafalls, I am not sure why you are asking me -- it doesn't appear that we have interacted in the past and I have not been particularly active at AfC lately. That said, I have great respect for Chris Troutman and if I had done the necessary research I'm sure I would have responded similarly. JSFarman (talk) 20:39, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

Kara Swisher edits

Hi JSFarman,

I saw you deleted my edits to the Kara Swisher page citing "100% synthesis." I'm new to wikipedia contributing and not really sure what this means, could you elaborate on this?

Hi Noatr (talk), Here's some clarification. Welcome to Wikipedia! JSFarman (talk) 05:05, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

Happy New Year, JSFarman

Happy New Year!
Hello JSFarman:

Did you know ... that back in 1885, Wikipedia editors wrote Good Articles with axes, hammers and chisels?

Thank you for your contributions to this encyclopedia using 21st century technology. I hope you don't get any unnecessary blisters.

Jay Sures Edit

Hello. I work for Executive Writing, and as part of my consultancy, I work with United Talent Agency. Thank you for removing the inappropriate reference to the Times of Israel article on Jay Sures' page. I am hoping you will also remove the same reference that appears on the page of David Kramer (Talent Agent). Thank you for looking into this matter. EWChristine (talk) 18:34, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

Done. Happily. This particular issue drives me nuts. JSFarman (talk) 18:42, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
