Thursday October 15: Women in Architecture Edit-a-thon @ Guggenheim

You are invited to join us for a full afternoon and evening of social Wikipedia editing at the Guggenheim (drop-in any time, noon-8pm!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles covering the lives and works of women in architecture.

noon - 8pm (drop-in anytime!) at Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Garrett Lobby @ 1071 5th Ave by E 88 St

In conjunction with Archtober and New York Archives Week, the Guggenheim will host its third Wikipedia edit-a-thon—or, #guggathon— to enhance articles related to women in architecture on Wikipedia. The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of Ada Lovelace Day for STEM, and Art+Feminism for art, in a field that, by its nature combines both.

The Guggenheim will work alongside ArchiteXX, the founders of WikiD: Women Wikipedia Design #wikiD, the international education and advocacy program working to increase the number of Wikipedia articles on women in architecture and the built environment. New and experienced editors are welcome.

Can’t join us in New York? Visit our global partnerships page to discover an edit-a-thon in a city near you or simply join remotely.

We hope to see you there!--Pharos (talk) 19:34, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2015: The results

[edit]

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to United States Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

A full list of our award winners are:

We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2016 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

[edit]

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Saturday January 16: Wikipedia Day NYC 2016

In addition to the party, the event will be a participatory unconference, with plenary panels, lightning talks, and of course open space sessions.

We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

10:00am - 7:00 pm at NYU ITP Tisch School of the Arts, 721 Broadway (between Waverly and Washington Place)

Re: Your GA nomination of 1933 Florida–Mexico hurricane

[edit]

I've added in the David Roth source, as you suggested. Since there were conflicting sources about the Texas totals (one suggested $3 million, the Texas Hurricane History $1.75 million, and the Monthly Weather Review just $500,000), I harmonized a bit and went with "between $2–$3 million" in the introduction to the Impact section, as the MWR total seemed low and probably preliminary, considering the damage done. I'm not sure how to make the storm infobox reflect that, though. Perhaps you could help. (Also, I've noticed that you only rounded one wind speed and not others elsewhere in the article. How does that work for GA or FA status?) I would like to thank you so much for the barnstar; you and others, especially Cyclonebiskit and 12george1, have consistently produced well-written articles and have willingly collaborated with others who have also sacrificed time and effort to do so. CapeVerdeWave (talk) 20:43, 24 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but there are some parts that you didn't round, such as this from the Meteorological History: "A barometer on Saba measured 29.02 inHg (983 mb), implying maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (137 km/h);[8]". How do I know when to round or not? Does it depend on whether the HURDAT value needs to be rounded? Also, there's this: "At 12:00 UTC on July 24, HURDAT initialized a tropical depression some 430 miles (692 km) east of Saint Lucia in the Windward Islands.[5]" Does the km value need to be rounded too? CapeVerdeWave (talk) 20:58, 24 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@CapeVerdeWave: Always glad to lend a helping hand~ In regards to the rounded values, all distances and wind speeds listed in or derived from HURDAT should be rounded to the nearest 5 as that's the resolution the database is meant to provide. Pressures should be to the nearest millibar and nearest hundredth of an inch of Mercury unless an explicit value of millibars in the tenths is provided. Observed wind speeds, such as the 84 mph observed in the Bahamas, are converted normally since they're not rounded in the first place. ~ Cyclonebiskit (chat) 21:07, 24 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have one more question for either Hurricanehink or Cyclonebiskit: I was reading one of my sources, an article written by a local staff writer in the Palm Beach Post, that mentioned winds in Stuart peaking "between 2 and 3 p.m." In the section describing the Florida impact, I wrote in the first paragraph: "The winds, which peaked between 19:00–20:00 UTC on July 30, downed several telegraph poles and destroyed a structure at Stuart, but otherwise little damage resulted.[34]" However, I wasn't sure whether the times listed in the newspaper article were in local time (which would have been EDT in 1933) or EST, following the standard procedure of the Weather Bureau in Washington, D.C. (as in its official publication at the time, the Monthly Weather Review). Thus, I wasn't sure whether the times were 18:00–19:00 UTC or 19:00–20:00 UTC. Can anyone offer some general guidance on how to deal with such cases when reading newspaper articles giving times? CapeVerdeWave (talk) 02:00, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@CapeVerdeWave: Since it's in a newspaper I think it's safe to assume EDT. Newspapers almost always use the local time so applying the standards of the MWR wouldn't make sense. ~ Cyclonebiskit (chat) 18:33, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Glad you both worked that all out. I was busy with Christmas related things, but Cyclonebiskit is right about rounding and the winds. As for times, I tend to avoid exact times unless it's necessary. How much does it add to a reader that they peaked in the afternoon as opposed to the morning? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:54, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hurricanehink-

While reviewing the submissions for the WikiCup, I noticed that your (very detailed) GAR ended with a comment about putting the review on hold, yet the article has been promoted to GA. Did you promote the article? Was it promoted in error or by someone else? Thanks.--Godot13 (talk) 23:40, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Connecticut Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by Denmark MPJ-DK (submissions), Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), and New South Wales Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by There's always time for skeletons Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with Lancashire J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.

If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
