Welcome to the 2014 WikiCup!
[edit]Hello Hurricanehink, and welcome to the 2014 WikiCup! Your submission page can be found here. The competition will begin at midnight tonight (UTC). There have been a few small changes from last year; the rules can be read in full at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring, and the page also includes a summary of changes. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work, and nominated, in 2014 is eligible for points in the competition- the judges will be checking! As ever, this year's competition includes some younger editors. If you are a younger editor, you are certainly welcome, but we have written an advice page at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Advice for younger editors for you. Please do take a look. Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! A question from USM
[edit]Since I know you on Wikipedia fairly well and you are an administrator, I thought I would ask you. I have been pondering a potential run for adminship and would like to ask you to do a review of my editing history to see what you think. I'm not trying to rush into anything and would be more than fine if you think that I should wait awhile. Thanks, United States Man (talk) 06:39, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
- To explain those incidents: The deal with Sharkguy05 is all my fault. I continually have problems with people touching the tornado tables after I have done NCDC updates, which I know is completely WP:OWN and I have been working on that (I agree, that would be a big problem with !voters during an adminship request). The incident with TAWX is that he failed to provide evidence that the local NWS offices are the authors of the NCDC storm entries. I admit that I got a little heated, but, as you acknowledged, I did start discussion with him after that. That is something else I need to work on. Anyway, thanks for the review! DYK for Cyclone Gretelle
[edit]On 16 January 2014, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Cyclone Gretelle, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that due to the damaging effects of Cyclone Gretelle in 1997, the government of Madagascar held a televised fundraiser to raise money for storm victims? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Cyclone Gretelle. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Don't revert for no reason
[edit]Undoing edits for absolutely no reason and leaving moronic summaries like this might seem funny to you. It is not. Don't do it again. 190.163.253.147 (talk) 10:07, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
- Actually 190 he undid your edit because he felt it was a boring way to open the lead, which was kind of explained in the edit summary. But for the avoidance of doubt it is generally felt to be boring if we start with the systems position in the season.Jason Rees (talk) 11:39, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
- It wasn't for no reason. Your edit summary said "say what it was before saying what it did", but that the project long ago agreed not to start articles that way. Call my edit summary "fuckwitted" if you want, but I stand by it. The opener was boring the way you changed it, and right now, it doesn't help anyone who reads the article. Obviously Hurricane Keith was a hurricane in a hurricane season. There have been hundreds of other tropical storms or hurricanes in various seasons. That means nothing. The important part, and the reason the storm has an article, as the damage in Central America. I'm reverting it back. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:34, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

GA review of Neighborhoods (Blink-182 album)
[edit]Hey there! Just addressing a few notes in your review.
- Source has been added for recording locations
- "is" changed to "was"
- Most album articles don't typically need a source for the release date, but if it's necessary, there are multiple sources within the article that confirm the release date of September 27.
- "The band's studio autonomy" was a phrase I culled from a few sources that essentially amounts to how they function as a unit (which was, as detailed in the article, not well during this time). I've left it as is for now.
- "Connect on the same scale" means commercially - it did not sell as well as prior releases by the band.
- I've changed "fatal" to "near-fatal," as others died in the crash and two survived
- I suppose one could mention where the crash happened in the first paragraph of "Background," but it already runs a tad long and it isn't necessary to understand the severity of the events and its impact on the band.
- Changed "found out via the TV news" to "learned of the crash via the TV news" to be more clear
- Quote isn't needed, but I'd like to keep it, as it clarifies why exactly he mailed him the photograph. I've cut "It was a good moment to put the shit aside," however.
- Ah yes, the Blinkumentary. It was scrapped, so I've changed the article accordingly.
- I suppose you could add that they're working on a new record, but there isn't much yet to report on that subject so I've left it as is.
If you have any more concerns, let me know. Thanks for the review! Thardin12 (talk) 06:28, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 January newsletter
[edit]The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:
- 12george1 (submissions) and TropicalAnalystwx13 (submissions) were the first people to score, for the good article Tropical Storm Bret (1981) and its good article review respectively. 12george1 was also the first person to score in 2012 and 2013.
- Sven Manguard (submissions) scored the first ITN points for 2014 North American polar vortex.
- WonderBoy1998 (submissions) scored points for an early good topic, finishing off Wikipedia:Featured topics/She Wolf.
- TheAustinMan (submissions) scored the first bonus points of the competition, for his work on Typhoon Vera.
- Igordebraga (submissions) has scored the highest number of bonus points for a single article, for the high-importance Jurassic Park (film).
Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.
Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Hurricane Isabel Source problem
[edit]I'm translating your wonderful work Hurricane Isabel to Chinese Wikipedia, but so far I have found a problem at source:
National Climatic Data Center (2003). "Event Report for Virginia". Archived from the original on 2012-02-23. Retrieved 2007-02-23. {{cite web}}
: Unknown parameter |deadurl=
ignored (|url-status=
suggested) (help)
The original link is dead almost two years ago, but I try to find it at web archive, the earlist capture is at May 11th, 2008, with another 3 captures later. But the problem is: this source is not what's should be, this is not the "Event Report for Virginia", actually is for California, some strong wind begin at Febuary 3rd, 2004 2:00 PM PST.
And I have already check the source at another article Effects of Hurricane Isabel in Virginia, also had same problem.
Can you help me out? Thank you so much for writing so many wonderful articles.--Jarodalien (talk) 15:23, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 February newsletter
[edit]And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:
- Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
- Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
- WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).
Other competitors of note include:
- Hahc21 (submissions), who helped take Thirty Flights of Loving through good article candidates and featured article candidates, claiming the first first featured article of the competition.
- Prism (submissions), who claimed the first featured list of the competition with Natalia Kills discography.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions), who takes the title of the contributor awarded the highest bonus point multiplier (resulting in the highest scoring article) of the competition so far. Her high-importance salamander, now a good article, scored 108 points.
After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. In the absence of a request, the article may end up being picked at any time (although with 1,326 articles in Category:Featured articles that have not appeared on the main page at present, there's no telling how long – or short! – the wait might be). Re: Camille
[edit]I just saw your question for Dr. Roth, and I would like to say that I know someone who is working on the 1954-1969 reanalysis period, but, as with all work in the reanalysis, I am obliged not to discuss preliminary changes until the data are officially released by HURDAT. The person who is working on 1954-1969 is writing his thesis paper on this period, and it should be interesting once it's made public (if indeed it gets peer reviewed and published). As an aside, the 1946-1950 reanalysis just came out today; I was one of the people who helped renalayze the 1947 Fort Lauderdale hurricane, of which I am very proud, but also for which I appreciate the efforts of Donna Strahan (the researcher who originally analyzed the storm with Dr. Landsea), Andrew Hagen (whose paper has been posted around here) and Dr. Landsea. Check out the results at HURDAT. King's (1950) now a Category 4 in Miami, by the way. CapeVerdeWave (talk) 02:32, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
- I think his paper goes up to 1969, but I'm NOT 100 percent sure. Feel free to ask him directly; don't quote me. Dr. Landsea and/or Andrew Hagen told me that the data (meaning all the reanalysis stuff) would be out this week, so I assume that the metadata will be up shortly. I don't have the software to update the tracks, but someone should. I can give you a rundown of the highlights from the latest HURDAT: between 1945 and 1950, South Florida was hit by five Category 4s in 1945, 1947, 1948, 1949, and 1950, including three new ones (a storm in September 1948, the August 1949 hurricane, and King in 1950). In this period, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and Palm Beach were hit directly by majors—all Category 4s—which is amazing considering the low frequency of Category 4 or 5 hits. Hurricane Dog of 1950 is obviously no longer a Category 5—a lot of the storms in 1950 were knocked down intensity wise, so that season is less impressive than it first appeared. A new storm, Mike, was also found in 1950 that was originally included in the Air Weather summary but for some reason was left off in the best track (no one knows why). A bunch of other new storms were found in every or almost every year in the 1946–1950 period, but no new hurricanes, I think. CapeVerdeWave (talk) 02:48, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter
[edit]A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.
With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

Disambiguation link notification for April 12
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Cyclone Hellen, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Moroni (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

A barnstar for you!
[edit]The Special Barnstar | |
For being so welcoming and nice to me when I began editing as a novice IP user 5 years ago. You introduced me to some basic policies, which caused me to begin the slow process of cutting down on original research, and sourcing more often, as well as making less slopy/unintentionally disruptive edits. It was also your recommendation that eventually persuaded me to create my account. You have made me a better Wikipedian, so I would like to award you this barnstar as a symbol of my appreciation. Thank you for everything, and keep up the good work! :) LightandDark2000 (talk) 10:32, 19 April 2014 (UTC) |
Is this you?
[edit]This isn't really on-topic, but would this happen to be you? No response is necessary if it's personal, I was just wondering; I saw this user make a comment when I was on the website, and I remembered you as being a Wikipedia user, so I wasn't sure if the names were connected or not. Dustin (talk) 17:15, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for the response! Dustin (talk) 17:37, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
I am surprised that you passed this, as it needs a good deal of copy-editing. Sven Manguard Wha? 03:16, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
- After taking a stab at the copy-editing, I believe that it is a bigger task than I can manage, and that the prose as it exists currently is not at the level that GA requires. As such, I have opened Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/Malaysia–Vietnam relations/1. Apologies, Sven Manguard Wha? 03:45, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

FA congratulations
[edit]Just a quick note to congratulate you on the promotion of Cyclone Joy to FA status recently. If you would like to see this (or any other FA) appear as "Today's featured article" soon, please nominate it at the requests page; if you'd like to see an FA on a particular date in the next year or so, please add it to the "pending" list. In the absence of a request, the article may end up being picked at any time (although with 1,307 articles in Category:Featured articles that have not appeared on the main page at present, there's no telling how long – or short! – the wait might be).
You (and your talk-page stalkers) may also be interested to hear that there have been some changes at the TFA requests page recently. Nominators no longer need to calculate how many "points" an article has, the instructions have been simplified, and there's a new nomination system using templates based on those used for DYK suggestions. Please consider nominating another article, or commenting on an existing nomination, and leaving some feedback on your experience. If you'd got any TFA-related questions or problems, please let me know. BencherliteTalk 13:44, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 April newsletter
[edit]Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Reid, iain james (submissions), tiger from Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Czar (submissions) and Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.
192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Another PAGASA storm of 2005.
[edit]Hello, Hurricanehink. I found out in the PAGASA's Typhoon2000 log (website: http://www.typhoon2000.ph/season05-3.htm) that there is a storm between Typhoon Kiko and Labuyo (Typhoons Khanun and Damrey). Do you think we should add this in the 2005 season? Please reply :) Typhoon2013 (talk) 20:45, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
