Hi Hayford Peirce, you could have avoided that misunderstanding by reading the page a bit more attentively. I have replied to your comment on the talk page (as did someone else).
Here, I'd just like to remind you that your constabulary authority to "play Bad Cop" (as you described it in your comment) is restricted to Citizendium and certainly does not apply to Wikipedia user pages. I invited additions to the list, but I ask you to not to delete content from it without asking me, even if you do not like it because it paints Citizendium in an unflattering light.
Of course, your comments are still welcome on the talk page (even if they should be a bit "grouchy" - I don't mind a direct manner of speaking if someone has interesting things to say).
Regards, HaeB (talk) 03:00, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
Seeing your remark here, I would like to note that the comment signed "HaeB 22 July, 2010" here and the one signed "HaeB 6 June, 2010" here were not made by me, but by an impostor. I do not endorse these personal attacks on you, although I find your frequent use of invectives ("cretins" etc.) not particularly helpful either. Regards, HaeB (talk) 17:33, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for File:Don Hamilton.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Don Hamilton.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 12:38, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Merry, merry
Hola
Thanks for the kind words and the shout-out (am I using that term right? I'm so OLD!)
The Heinlein bio was something I'd been looking forward to since before there was even any certainty that there'd be one. Patterson's big challenge is going to be that second volume, where he has to confront the less attractive sides of RAH's personality. RLetson (talk) 21:49, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
- Well, shucks [drags toe in dirt]. Thanks for the kind words, and glad you found the review an accurate description of the object in question. It has been, um, interesting to follow the reactions to the various reviews expressed on Patterson's Heinlein Society site. Patterson's own responses are pretty sane & adult, but some of the other folk do get het up a bit. RLetson (talk) 21:27, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

About Waldo Peirce
Bonjour Mr Hayford.
Encore merci.

File source problem with File:Joe Hunt 1943 2.jpg
Thank you for uploading File:Joe Hunt 1943 2.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Speedy deletion nomination of Mercer Beasley (tennis)
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Mercer Beasley (tennis), requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may be soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:
- It seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. (See section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.
- It appears to be a clear copyright infringement of en.citizendium.org/wiki/Mercer_Beasley/Signed_Articles. (See section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. However, even if you use one of these processes to release copyrighted material to Wikipedia, it still needs to comply with the other policies and guidelines to be eligible for inclusion. If you would like any assistance with this, you can ask a question at the help desk.
- It appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), individual animal, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. (See section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi, thanks for message. If you post an article it will be assessed as it stands; if you don't want that to happen, you should write it as a draft. The nominator tagged the article for lack of notability, promotional tone and copyright. I felt that the article failed on the neutrality criterion, so I didn't check the copyright status. I accept that that criterion as stated appears to be incorrect.
Nevertheless, I think there may still be an issue because so much of the article consists of attributed quotes of copyright material. As a rule of thumb, not more than ten percent of the article should be copied text.
I deleted your article because it was written in a promotional tone. Articles must be neutral and encyclopaedic. Examples of unsourced claims presented as fact or non-neutral tone include: by far the best-known American tennis coach of the first half of the 20th century... influential book... almost uniquely successful as a coach.... an achievement that almost certainly has never been matched since... An innovator of many coaching techniques... a very successful line of tennis rackets that were widely sold for nearly three decades...—and so on
Problems with copying text without checking mean that as well as importing the tone, you are perpetuating errors such as Thorough his long career.
Note that if you want to repeat a ref, you should use <ref name = NAME> reference </ref> at the first occurrence, and <ref name=NAME/> thereafter.
If you wish, I can sandbox the deleted text for you to improve, just let me know Jimfbleak (talk) 05:56, 13 September 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for all the informative info. I used to do a lot of stuff at WP and I was aware of most of these standards. Those at CZ are/were somewhat different. The CZ article, as long as it is, was actually never finished, so I hadn't done a final clean-up on it. If you would sandbox it here at WP, then I will get into it eventually and clean it up. Thanks! Hello, Hayford Peirce. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, The Mathematics of Murder: A Fearne & Bracknell Collection, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:
- edit the page
- remove the text that looks like this:
{{proposed deletion/dated...}}
- save the page
Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Vanjagenije (talk) 08:46, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

Ways to improve Anything for a Quiet Life (short stories)
Hi, I'm Gab4gab. Hayford Peirce, thanks for creating Anything for a Quiet Life (short stories)!
I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. None of the sources used support notability of the book. It would help to add references to independent reliable sources which are about the book rather than the author.
The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. Gab4gab (talk) 15:04, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
Image on Commons subject to disclaimers

- All it looks like to me is that I'm saying that anyone can USE the picture, BUT that they have to say that *I* took the picture. I don't think that that is too much to ask. Disambiguation link notification for May 7
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited John's Grill, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Tenderloin (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hello Hayford, many thanks for reverting my silly mistake on the above article. I must confess to rushing around and got my facts wrong. With best regards, David, David J Johnson (talk) 12:26, 23 September 2019 (UTC)
- I've done a lot worse than that over the years! Cheers! Hayford Peirce (talk) 16:43, 23 September 2019 (UTC)

A hachis
I'm shocked, shocked, that you'd even consider saying "an hachis" -- it is, after all, an aspirated h ("h" aspiré) -- double checked in TLF, Wiktionary, Petit Robert. --Macrakis (talk) 18:34, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
- I would be even MORE shocked if I ever got this right! To ME, it simply SOUNDS better when speaking English to say "an 'achis'" so that it really comes out as sounding like "an nachis". But, of course, like most people, there are probably MANY words that I mispronounce. Years ago it took a Chinese girl from Beijing to correct my pronunciation of "pharmaceutical". And I used to argue with people about the pronunciation of Cyborg and Caucasus. But at least, unlike a number of our revered Presidents, I DO know how to pronounce Nuclear. And the esteemed Gore Vidal admits in the introduction to his book Palimpsest: A Memoir that until he started the book itself he had always grossly mispronounced it. Sigh, so much to learn, so little time! Hayford Peirce (talk) 19:15, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
Thanks
I appreciate your nice words regarding the tennis issue. -- James26 (talk) 23:54, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
deadurl is deprecated
Hi, I noticed your edits to American folk music revival. You changed some url-status parameters to deadurl, but that parameter has been deprecated in the citation template. The correct parameter is url-status=dead or url-status=live now. A bot was approved last September to make the change (see here. Could you change deadurl back? Thanks! - Yes, I was belatedly wondering what was going on, I didn't mean to do ANY of that stuff. weird! Hayford Peirce (talk) 18:15, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes, there are people who think they know THE TRUTH and apparently don't check the existing sources to see what they say. Another case like this was on the whipped cream article, where some people insist that crème chantilly must include sugar and vanilla, though there are plenty of sources in the article showing that that's not true.
As for the box formatting, apparently someone decided that the cute formatting with the big quotation marks wasn't sober enough. But having no framing at all makes it hard to read the page. --Macrakis (talk) 16:18, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for all your Ross Thomas edits. I've read a few of his books over the past couple of years...have long considered starting a stub for one of them, as more than a few meet notability requirements...curious if you would favor one book over the others. Thank you. Caro7200 (talk) 14:39, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

George Jones
Hey, I was wondering what you thought was wrong with my edit. I changed it from a solid page and a few indexes to a sectioned entry. I don't think I deleted much, but if I did it would be best if you posted it on the new page. I'm in the middle of adding references I also added a section on his drinking and substance abuse and a section on his marriages.
I kept some of the praise, but removed the excessive Monroe quote. The introduction was about 15 paragraphs long when I started.
Why, may I ask, do you need to remove the section on marriage, most of the section on drinking, and keep the useless subtitle under "recent albums?"
I'm working on a re-write with sources. Tell me what was cut from the original that you would like in the final, and I'd be glad to include it. (Ultramontane)
Nero Wolfe
I'm content with your editing of my Wolfe additions of the past few days. One glaring omission from the text is any extended discussion of Wolfe as a gourmand. I hope to post additional material on this topic within the next few days although I don't regard myself as a qualified "foodie."
Amelia Earhart article
This is the current introductory paragraph: "Amelia Mary Earhart (July 24, 1897 – missing as of July 2, 1937) was a noted American aviator who disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean during a circumnavigational flight attempt in 1937. She was an influential early female pilot and the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross."
I had submitted the following: "Amelia Mary Earhart' (July 24, 1897 – missing as of July 2, 1937) was a noted American aviator whose aviation career included many milestones. She became the first woman and second pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic, on the fifth anniversary of Charles Lindbergh's Atlantic crossing. She was an influential early female pilot who was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, a women's pilots' organization. Among her many awards and achievements, Earhart was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross. After setting numerous records, she disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean during a circumnavigational flight attempt in 1937, sparking a near-mythical public fascination with her life, career and ultimate disappearance." Word count: 116 words.
It was removed by another editor who indicated: 1. Introductory passage is too long 2. Citing wordy headers in other flawed articles doesn't solve the PoV and clarity issue here at all 3. It's far too long and sounds like a promotional blurb. When you've finished expanding the article body I plan on discussing the cheerleading PoV there too. If we need to start citing WP policy that's ok.
Hayford, I value your opinion, what do you think about my edit? FYI the Wikipedia articles on Thomas Jefferson was 250 words, Abraham Lincoln: 147 and the Wright Brothers: 199 words. Bzuk 12:40 22 January 2007 (UTC).

Note
Porting your stuff over from Citizendium, sure, but for works about fictional characters, please try to include some external sources — i.e., more than just the works in which the character was featured. DS (talk) 18:07, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- A) I was indeed referring to the Colonel, yes. B) Somehow my eye slid right past the "Sources" section; I perceived only the "References" section (which has no external sources). Oops. C) That said, ideally we would show that someone other than Gilbert has written about these characters. Articles can always be improved. DS (talk) 23:16, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
The Mischief Makers (novel) moved to draftspace
An article you recently created, The Mischief Makers (novel), does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.
