@Sawyer-mcdonell thanks for the review. I will amend the article. I hope you do not mind if I tag you after I fix it, just to recheck. If you have more observations please include them. I understand your issues with using words like "journey" and "traditional practice" put I do not think I can change that as I do not want to upheld one view especially after South Africa adopted the Traditional Health Practitioners Act 35 of 2004 but I understand the sentiment. I also understand the contested sources used for the ritual part but whether the pratices is wrong or right, these sources converge when describing the event. FuzzyMagma (talk) 08:29, 5 March 2024 (UTC)
I'm happy to give more feedback when the article has improved - I understand the motivation to not want to uphold one view of the phenomenon, but I think then that the multiple perspectives need to be explained more fully, using academic sources. sawyer * he/they * talk 20:00, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello FuzzyMagma/Archives,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Notice

The file File:Synthesised Sudan album cover.webp has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-free album cover being used in a decorative manner in Jantra (musician). Non-free album cover art is generally allowed to be used for primary identification purposes in stand-alone articles about albums, but its use in other articles is generally only allowed when the cover art itself is the subject of sourced critical commentary as explained in WP:NFC#cite_note-3 and the context for non-free use required by WP:NFCC#8 is evident.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:20, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

You WP:DEPRODed the file which is fine, but I'm not following your reasoning for doing so. If the article is intended to be about the album itself, then perhaps the file's non-free use could be justified per item 1 of WP:NFCI, but the article appears to be primary about the artist with only a short sentence at the very end about the album. Are you planning on expanding the article to include more sourced critical content about the album because you think the album meets WP:NALBUM or about the cover art itself? Otherwise, I don't think a consensus can be established in favor of the file's non-free use (at least not as it's currently being used) at WP:FFD per WP:NFC#cite_note-3, which is where the file is going to end up being discussed next if nothing changes. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:48, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
The sentence that starts with “Vik Sohonie, founder …” is about the album. I can create an article or make a clear subsection for the album if the will make it easier to spot FuzzyMagma (talk) 08:44, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
Non-free cover art (album covers, book covers, video game box covers, etc.) is generally OK to use per Wikipedia's non-free content use policy when the cover art is being used for primary identification purposes in the main infobox or at the top of a stand-alone article about the work the cover art represents. That's why you often find non-free book covers being used in stand-alone articles about books, non-free album covers being used in stand-alone articles about albums and non-free video game box covers being used in stand-alone articles about video games. Trying to use non-free cover art in other ways or in other articles tends to be much much harder to justify and is pretty much never allowed unless there is sourced critical commentary relevant encyclopedically to readers somewhere in the article that significantly improves the reader's understanding of article content about the cover to such a degree that omitting the cover art from the article would be detrimental to that understanding. That might seem like a high hurdle, but how relevant policy has been applied over the years to such non-free content. This is one of the reasons why you seldom see non-free book covers in articles about the authors, non-free album covers in articles about bands, non-free video game box covers in articles about video game companies/designers. Moreover, pretty much anytime you do find such files being used in such articles, they've usually been added in good faith but they're almost always not compliant with relevant policy.
In this particular case, the album the cover art represents is mentioned by name only twice in the article and one of those mentions is in the file's caption. (Btw, you might want to check the spelling of the album's name in the caption because it's different from the spelling of the name in the body of the article.) There might be content about the album in the body of the article, but none it is (or at least seems to be) about the album's cover itself. In other words, take out the image and read the article; if there's basically no or very little loss in understanding about what's written about the album, there's probably no valid justification for using the cover art.
If you feel the article satisfies WP:NALBUM and want to create a stand-alone article about it, then you should have no problem using the image there. Otherwise, just creating a subsection about the album in the article about the artist won't really change anything unless you're able to find and add sourced critical commentary about the cover itself.
Finally, I wouldn't have prodded the file for deletion if I didn't believe it was a clear cut case of not complying with WP:NFC#cite_note-3. If you think I'm incorrectly assessing the file's non-free use, try seeking feedback about it at WT:NFCC or WP:MCQ to see what other's might think. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:56, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
I definitely do not think you assessed the situation incorrectly. I just thought my argument can hold water given that half of the article is about the album (not necessarily the album cover itself but that is also true for most album pages here).
I can find some exceptions where there is an album cover in an musician wikipage, as I saw some album pages being merged after a discussion. BUT that is beside the point, so if you still think - based on your excellent experience - that this album cover doesn’t meet the requirements for a free-use, then I will revert my edit and put the PROD back. I still see that it serves many purposes as it shows the artist, links its style with different cultural aspects; it’s really powerful but maybe I am biased. FuzzyMagma (talk) 20:20, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
Often when people merge stand-alone articles about albums into other articles, very little if any consideration is given to the use of non-free content and how it's affected by the merge. Most users just seem to incorrectly assume that the content is OK to use because it's already be approved for use. Many don't even bother to update the content's non-free use rationale to reflect the new article when the content is now being used and the way it's now being used. So, while I'm sure you've seen cases of album covers being used in articles about bands/musicians, most of these are probably not policy compliant and just haven't been noticed yet. Moreover, non-free content use is, in principle, suppossed to be assessed on a case-by-case basis as explained in WP:OTHERIMAGE because not all non-free content use is equivalent and there might be small yet important differences which affect a particular use. Another possibility is that the album cover is not licensed as non-free (i.e. it's considered to be within the public domain for some reason or it's been released by it's copyright holder under an acceptable free license) which means it's not subject to Wikiepdia's non-free content use policy. So, it seems unlikely (At least to me) that any of those other files (if non-free) have been granted an "exception" per WP:NFEXMP. If you want to point out a specific file, though, I can take a look; you could also ask someone at WT:NFCC or WP:MCQ to take a look at the file.
I'm not sure it's OK for you to just to revert your deprod since something can only be prodded for deletion once, and even a bad faith deprod (which is not the case here) still is considered a deprod. I think the only options here are (1) remove the file from the article and let it get deleted as orphaned non-free use per WP:F5 or (2) start a discussion about the file's non-free use at WP:FFD to see whether you (or anyone else) can establish a consensus in favor of its use in the article. I will, however, ask an administrator who works with non-free content a lot to take a look and see if there's another way. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:03, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
Just did option one and thanks for the detailed answer .. FuzzyMagma (talk) 22:44, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
That's your choice. A bot will probably add the template {{di-orphaned non-free use-notice}} to your user talk page once the file get's flagged as being "orphaned non-free use". You can just remove or ignore that template if you want. Once the file gets tagged with {{Di-orphaned non-free use}}, it will sit unused for seven days until it's reviewed by an administrator. If the file is still orphaned after seven days, it will be deleted by the reviewing administrator. For reference, WP:F5 deletions are considered to be non-contentious since all non-free content is required to be used in at least one article per non-free content use criterion #7; WP:FFD deletions, on the other hand. work like other XFD deletion in that files deleted per community consensus generally needed a new consensus established to restore the file. If, howewver, you change your mind before seven days have passed or if somehow the situation changes (e.g. you create a stand-alone article about the article where you want to use the file), the file will need to be added to at least one article to avoid deletion. If the situation changes after the file has been deleted per WP:F5, you will need to either ask the deleting administrator to restore it or ask for help at WP:REFUND. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:14, 19 April 2024 (UTC)

I only briefly looked at the article, but it appears there are at least some issues with attribution, for instance, content copied from child abuse. Please see WP:COPYWITHIN. Schierbecker (talk) 17:05, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
you know a dummy edit can fix that? it is really an easy fix
as WP:COPYWITHIN states that dummy edit may be used to provide the edit summary attribution in either of the methods described above.
Not to shrug your comment off, but it is really unfair to brush off 149 edits and summarising of more than 100 articles on an easy fix.
No to dictate how you review articles, but the aim is to improve articles and not to put down genuine efforts.
if that was your only reason, considering the amount of work I put into this article, I have to disagree with you. FuzzyMagma (talk) 19:01, 22 April 2024 (UTC)

Interesting, but that needs to be discussed in the article and needs to be brought up as a whitewashing concern (which your sources may substantiate; I haven't checked). I have concerns about some of your other applications of this category as well, but in the other instances I saw the articles in question appeared to more directly discuss whitewashing issues. Thanks for your understanding! DonIago (talk) 03:35, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
No worries. I totally understand what you mean. Whenever I applied the category, I had a source but as you said, it need to be discussed in the article first. FuzzyMagma (talk) 06:23, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

Anders Hagfeldt

Your addition to Anders Hagfeldt has been removed or altered, as it appears to closely paraphrase https://www.uu.se/en/contact-and-organisation/staff?query=XX3873, a copyrighted source. Limited close paraphrasing or quotation is appropriate within reason, so long as the material is clearly attributed in the text. However, longer paraphrases which are not attributed to their source may constitute copyright violation or plagiarism, and are not acceptable on Wikipedia. Such content cannot be hosted here for legal reasons; please do not post it on any page, even if you plan to fix it later. You may use external websites or printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If you own the copyright to the text, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use it — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the copyright but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Thank you. – Isochrone (talk) 19:39, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

FuzzyMagma, you can't just copy stuff from non-free external sources into Wikipedia. It's a little worrying that an editor with your long history should still be doing so. Please confirm that you fully understand why the content you added to Anders Hagfeldt was unacceptable. Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:13, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

Moving categories

Hey, next time use WP:CFDS when moving categories like for Category:Sudanese civil war (2023–present). For clear cut change of category title following page name changes, there shouldn't be much of a protest, and there's a bot to update the categories (and you don't need to spend the time doing the changes on all the pages and subcategories, and another admin to clean up after manually). – robertsky (talk) 14:03, 26 May 2024 (UTC)

lol good to know that, glad there is a bot as this was really not a fun task to do but I thought it needed to be done but glad I am wrong. Bot 1 : 0 FuzzyMagma (talk) 17:44, 26 May 2024 (UTC)

Dukki gel

Hi Fuzzymagma, could you possibly help me start a new article on Dukki gel which was part of the kerma culture and will reference Charles bonnet ( a Nubioligist) ? Jedorton (talk) 07:19, 9 June 2024 (UTC)

As there is alot of misinformation online about dukki gel Jedorton (talk) 07:22, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
hi @Jedorton, thanks for reaching out. I have started a draft here at Draft:Doukki Gel, please feel free to add more to it but avoid copy right violations. Once the article is ready, I will move it to the mainspace FuzzyMagma (talk) 10:51, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
Hi @FuzzyMagma, first off thank you for your assistance on starting the new article on Doukki gel, In the introduction it seems to wrongfully suggests that the 18th dynasty founded Doukki gel but according to charles bonnet the 18th dynasty (thutmose I) founded a city neighboring doukki gel not doukki gel itself, he states this in "The Black Kingdom of the Nile" which can be read here https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.4159/9780674239036-010/html, I would like to say though that I could be wrong as i haven't spoken to Charles directly , But Charles bonnet seems to suggests Doukki gel predates the 18th dynasty (thutmose I) in the Black kingdom of the Nile, again I would like to say thank you for your help. Jedorton (talk) 20:09, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

A question about a revert

You reverted an edit by RetractionBot in the article Filippo Berto, but you didn't give an edit summary saying why. What was the reason for the revert? JBW (talk) 18:24, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

sorry for that, but the retractions are there intentionally as it relates to scientific misconduct and not citation. have a look at Filippo Berto#Scientific misconducts FuzzyMagma (talk) 18:29, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
Hi FuzzyMagna,
Related to this topic, could you please add the two latest retractions that were issued on Berto's papers to the wikipedia page? I will link them below:
1) https://pubpeer.com/publications/3153237D20009C35D4306A840094E7#2
https://www.scientific.net/KEM.754.241
2) https://pubpeer.com/publications/C06070CBC44783058A428EED8457CA#3
https://www.scientific.net/KEM.754.244
Also, I agree with you that the retractions should remain there as they relate to a very serious case of scientific misconduct, especially since it was documented that Berto had financial incentive behind said misconduct:

The articles Metal and Alloys could do with a little help. I don't know enough about diverse alloys to be confident, plus second opinions/interpretations are always useful. Please use English and Latin alphabet

Hello, I noticed you made an edit (see here) where you used a non-standard writing system. It has been undone: because this is the English Wikipedia, names should be transliterated into the roman alphabet and entities should be reffered as the common name used in English sources. The reason for this is most users of this Wikipedia will have no idea how to use alternative writing systems and thus it detracts from the understanding of the article. See WP:ENG and WP:UEIA for more information.

You also did not provide a reliable source for the edit; there is consensus among editors that Wiktionary and other Wiki projects are not reliable sources and therefore should not be considered to support information found here. Please find an academic source that supports your edits in future. See WP:WINARS where it specifically mentions Wiktionary.

I also see you undid a reversion by another editor (see here). If you disagree with reversions, it's better to talk to the user directly and understand the reasons why, otherwise it can be considered disruptive. Neatly95 (talk) 10:56, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

@Neatly95 if you look to the Wiktionary link there is two references. Maybe you should have looked to my edit summary before reverting it FuzzyMagma (talk) 11:04, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
the other thing about "because this is the English Wikipedia, names should be transliterated ..." is slightly misleading, as non-English name are included in infrobox and the lead of articles. FuzzyMagma (talk) 11:07, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
last thing, maybe you are new here, but normally discuss edits in the page talk and tag other editors as I do not think the editor you have mentioned agrees with you, as they have just thanked me for my edit. FuzzyMagma (talk) 11:09, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
Hello. I understand what you mean, but either way, Wiktionary is still not a permissable source, even if there are apparently sources there. If there are references on Wiktionary, please by all means, substantiate them, bring them to Wikipedia, and cite them in the proper format to support your edit. You shouldn't reference Wiktionary as a source.
The non-standard writing system is acceptable if it is "commonly used, and transliterated to English: it isn't misleading, it is abundantly clear. It means you can write foreign characters as long as you source a transliteration and establish a need for writing it (i.e. it's a very commonly used name for the entity). You unfortunately did not provide either.
And about the reversions: whether or not I am "new" here has little to do with it; undoing reversions by other editors can be seen as disruptive, so it was just a friendly reminder to discuss a point of disagreement instead of blindly undo a valid reversion. Thanks. Neatly95 (talk) 11:25, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
make sense. I will revert your edit just to add the reference afterward. hope that is not an issue. FuzzyMagma (talk) 15:07, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

Wiktionary

As it is self-sourced, we shouldn't be using it just as we don't use our own articles. If there is a source in the entry, we can use the source if we have verified it. Doesn't that make sense? Doug Weller talk 13:08, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

it does FuzzyMagma (talk) 13:11, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. A relief to know that I've got it right. The editor is a good faith editor I am sure, but has made such a mess not just using Wiktionary but changing standard English spellings of deities to those used in other languages, which made leads not match titles, created red links, etc. Doug Weller talk 13:28, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
when they made the edit, I checked the reference and their edits checked out. But now it seems like there is another layer that I have missed, which adding the reference to their edit. FuzzyMagma (talk) 15:06, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi,thanks for reviewing my latest article Wilhelmine Sandrock. You were right to flag missing sources, and luckily I have found several RS and included them. It’s a really interesting article and thanks for writing the article.
they showed the movie around London and I was lucky to enjoy it twice in 1 week. Really excellent movie. One thing that I did not understand through the whole movie is whether Akram is a smoker or just light cigarettes for there aroma which is weird!
but great movie, well thought and has excellent writing of dialogues.
what a treat! FuzzyMagma (talk) 08:53, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
Glad you had a chance to watch it. Like you, I am very happy about the success this film has had. Probably Sudanese creatives will produce more films, even from the diaspora. Enjoy your day. Munfarid1 (talk) 08:59, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

How about starting an article for the Sudanese diaspora?

Hi, how about starting an article for the Sudanese diaspora? As there is already this article on the South Sudanese diaspora, we would have to include the diaspora from both parts before 2011 and then describe the situation after the separation. Also, there are two articles about the Sudanese in the United Kingdom and Sudanese Americans that you probably know. Finally, we could probably use the Sudanese Diaspora Research Network (SDRN) and other sources that came up in my quick Google search. - At the moment, I am busy with other articles, but if you want to start it as a draft, I would be happy to add whatever I can find. - Cheers and enjoy your day, Munfarid1 (talk) 08:26, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

seems like a great idea. I am yet to look to the sources you have sent previously about Health in Sudan and just started writing about Sudanese Emergency Response Rooms among other drafts that I am struggling to finish due to commitments in real life FuzzyMagma (talk) 10:17, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi, don't know if you already know this: Here is a very useful link to Wikipedia Reference Search, a search engine that is limited to a few hundred higher-quality sources. - I wish I had discovered this much earlier, as it saves time compared to a simple search on regular search engines for WP editors. Munfarid1 (talk) 07:28, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

I used before since the update for WRS. It was messy but now it is working very well. Normall when you start a draft, you will find search suggestions in different platform (i.e., for EERs, Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL). It is really helpful. Thanks for sharing FuzzyMagma (talk) 08:51, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
