Possibly mistaken block for User:200.94.131.123

Hello. Was your block of 200.94.131.123 a couple of hours ago on account of the one edit I see for that account today to Reynoldsburg, Ohio? The article on Le'Veon Bell indicates that he was in fact born in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, so it isn't clear to me why the edit would have led to the block. I don't even understand why ClueBot would think it was vandalism. —Largo Plazo (talk) 21:30, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

My goodness! Does indeed look like a miscarriage of justice. I shall unblock and apologize. Guess the bot and I both thought that name was a joke, for which we'll be duly pilloried. . Favonian (talk) 21:57, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

You were good enough to block User:Fart on my niece. Would also mind blocking User:Fart on Bahooka for the same reasons? By the way, they are both sockpuppets of User:Altimgamr. Thanks, Bahooka (talk) 19:09, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

Hey Favonian, speaking of beer--our local beer place has a Bøgedal event scheduled, with four different vintages on tap. Is that worth going to? Drmies (talk) 01:38, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
@Drmies: Sad to say, I have never sampled their products, but I checked some reviews and they were overwhelmingly positive. Very small output, and now I discover that some of it goes to the pampered American market. Hope you have a good time! Favonian (talk) 20:23, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Request for WP:ROLLBACK

Hi. I am A.Minkowiski, I am new but you might have noticed me on WP:AIV as quick vandal reporter and fighting against vandalism. I am now looking for ROLLBACK to perform better task even more. I requested for ROLLBACK @ Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Rollback but haven't received any approval yet. Can you please approve it ?. Best regards. A.Minkowiski _Lets t@lk 17:50, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

I'm afraid I cannot grant you rollback rights at this point. You are doing some good work, but you have only been editing for eight days. You need to gain some more experience, also to demonstrate that you can navigate around the minefield of 3RR, which has previously gotten you into trouble. Favonian (talk) 17:56, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
I agree with you, but they warned me about 3RR because of my revert against vandalism. User were keep on vandalizing in article, that was not actually edit war, but was vandalism about which I reverted edits. I am well familiar about 3RR violation so its impossible for me to break any Wikipedia guidelines and policies. A.Minkowiski _Lets t@lk 18:12, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I don't think you really need to take the quiz, if only because I blocked the account as a quackingly obvious sock of Timmy Polo. Favonian (talk) 14:33, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. Yes, I thought that this was quite odd. And I was pretty leary of this guy. His communications seemed quite odd, and I sense some ulterior motive. Thanks for the notfication to me. And thanks for blocking the abusive account. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 19:26, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Finnedi socks

If my intuition serves me right the next Finnedi sock will be BryndisYngvason (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), a user account that was just created, right after the last one was blocked. Because Finnedi seems to like impersonation names: Thomas.W -> Thommi.W, Bishonen -> Bishoska, CambridgeBayWeather -> Cambridge Bay University, and now quite possibly Yngvadottir -> BryndisYngvason. Going through the list of people here who have blocked him, or gotten him blocked... Thomas.W talk 18:14, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Clue stick primed! Favonian (talk) 18:16, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
and he's blocked – again. Favonian (talk) 18:17, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
It's the second sock I predict publicly, that is having posted the name as a probable sock before the sock started editing (Bishoska being the first), and actually the third one I predicted (also CBU as an impersonation of CBW). Unfortunately I can't do anything about it myself. Thomas.W talk 18:22, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
YnvgvisBryndason perchance? Favonian (talk) 18:25, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
Looks probable. Created 18:23 (UTC), a few minutes after the last one was blocked. Thomas.W talk 18:32, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
I'm getting slow. I hate this tiny little laptop keyboard, it's so slow to use that I was still typing when the latest sock was "activated"... Thomas.W talk 18:35, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

And the next one is BryngdisYngvabay (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) Thomas.W talk 18:44, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Indeed. Maybe I should just block and get it done with. Favonian (talk) 18:44, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
I noticed there was a typo in the name (which I blame on the tiny keyboard), but you managed to find the user anyway. Thomas.W talk 18:47, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
Let's just hope he enjoys it as much as we do. :-/ Favonian (talk) 18:51, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Getting a bit predictable: ThomasFavonian. Favonian (talk) 19:44, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
Yes. I'm not sure the two user accounts with Asian user names were really Finnedi, the names don't fit in, considering Finnedi's narrow horizon, being focused only on Finland and subjects relating to that area. So it wouldn't surprise me if we have a copy-cat here too. Thomas.W talk 19:53, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
Too predictable, apparently.--Mr Fink (talk) 19:54, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Still think it's the same guy. "Nihonjin no shimei" may refer to Nihonjoe, the 'crat who anointed me admin way back when. Favonian (talk) 19:57, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
Then why would he switch back to names that fit in: the latest, Nuutintytär (talk · contribs), fits in perfectly since since it's a patronym, "Knut's daughter", like "Nuutinpoika" is "Knut's son". Which only someone who knows a bit of Finnish would know. Thomas.W talk 20:10, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
He's just showing us how immensely clever he is. Trolls do that. Favonian (talk) 20:04, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
That was sarcasm, right? We all know that trolls don't have a clever bone in their body: they just think they're clever DP 20:06, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
And here I thought I was being subtle. Well, troll mothers are proud of their sons, I'm sure. Favonian (talk) 20:08, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

User page vandalism

Another new user, Duumas.W (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), just repeated the vandalism you reverted a few minutes ago, so maybe you could put a padlock on my userpage too... Thomas.W talk 21:41, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Semi'ed it indefinitely. No reason why "casual" users should edit it anyway. Favonian (talk) 21:43, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Earl of Kent

If Tinkertailorsoilderspy comes back with that nonsense, I shall block him. He has two IPs, 193.173.115.7 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) and 193.173.115.8 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), who are both up to a final warning for constantly re-adding it; I guess that's why he has made himself an account. He is probably Buckbuster (talk) who wrote an article Earl of Buckland last year claiming that the WWII fighter ace Johnnie Johnson was made Earl of Buckland in 1947 (funny, I have a 1964 book by him which says nothing about that) and this Robin Charles Johnson was his grandson and so the third Earl of Buckland. It's not clear how his title is supposed to have changed to Kent. There are some real nut-cases out there. JohnCD (talk) 22:08, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

He definitely has it coming! I never cease to be amazed by some people's desire to be elevated to the nobility. Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of Baronofashford lists some instances of a guy who periodically appoints himself a member of the House of Lords. Well, at least he's satisfied with being a baron. Favonian (talk) 05:58, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Hard to maintain the old AGF today. At any rate, I've reverted the IP as the statement was shoehorned into a paragraph with references saying something else entirely. Favonian (talk) 19:13, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

FYI, those users you blocked (with the weird names) and those related IPs on the articles being vandalized are all sockpuppets of User:IPhonehurricane95, bringing his sockpuppet count up to 334. At any rate, his IP Ranges have been blocked for a month, and his newest IP lost its talk page access after he attempted to use it to abuse other admins. LightandDark2000 (talk) 01:23, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
So yes, in the future, if you see any new IPs or sock users displaying his behavior, feel free to block them on sight. LightandDark2000 (talk) 01:24, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
Will do! Favonian (talk) 15:41, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
Sock count has increased to 336 as of today. However, his recent remaining sock accounts from Wikipedia and Commons were both indef blocked. Also, the Stewards has locked at least one of them, and his IP Range is blocked for a month (under around 6 separate blocks), so that should give us some breathing space. LightandDark2000 (talk) 00:31, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

Block evasion

Since that IP signed "Amanbir", perhaps I should just be reverting at the article and blocking? The thought had occurred to me, but I don't like to guess from someone's IP. And I thought semi would be unfair, in addition to my being involved. Yngvadottir (talk) 06:09, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Mokshanine, aka "Amanbir Singh" is emphatically banned, so all is fair when it comes to blocking and protecting. He's a real pest! Favonian (talk) 06:12, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I actually started the ban discussion to formalize it, and he distinguished himself during it. I was just leery of assuming the IP was him. Hence the talk page section. OK, since he's used the name and that is in any case who I suspected, I'll just bop 'im from now on. Yngvadottir (talk) 06:16, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
Ah, I missed that important detail. Good work! Favonian (talk) 06:18, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Reporting Spammer

Hey Favonian, I discovered a spammer by accident: Kimokeke1234567. I wiped their userpage, but it would be great if you'd take a look. Thanks, 10:40, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

The editor has hijacked the article 3 times now. It's about time he was blocked I think!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:41, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

@Dr. Blofeld: Yeah, I think his time has come. To add to the funeral pyre, could you please have at look at commons:File:Dr Cecil Chao 2014-05-03 23-38.jpg, which our friend added to the Cecil Chao article? I'm quite certain it's a copyvio, but I'm not a habitual at commons and don't know how to go about reporting it when I don't have a smoking gun URL. Favonian (talk) 19:14, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
Hm, on the other hand, Yngvadottir has intervened, so maybe I should control my blood lust for the moment. Favonian (talk) 19:26, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
One last chance...♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:05, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
He's now tried twice to create what I surmise to be an autobiography. He's making heavy weather of the formatting and still has no talk page edits except for one contesting deletion. I won't delete his articles myself, nor will I move either to his user page for him unless he asks - I am not sure whether he's read my note suggesting he do that. But if they do get deleted without his having communicated, I think it's time for a competence block; enough rope has been paid out. I am at work, so if you come back online before I can react, please feel free to act as you wish. Yngvadottir (talk) 12:28, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
Update to above: 3 versions deleted by someone else, a second defence mounted via the "contest this speedy deletion" button, a response to me on his talk, and he's created his user page. Unfortunately he's accusing me of oppressing him; however, I no longer feel compelled to block him to protect the encyclopedia. Some progress. Still at work .... Yngvadottir (talk) 13:23, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
Sigh! Baby Jimbo cries when we fail to assume good faith and expect redemption of hopeless editors, so I'll perform the Wikipedian rope trick. Favonian (talk) 17:36, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
Yes. Plus a weird e-mail found when I got home from work, which of course I won't share, but he seems to have confused me with someone else with more edits. I'm afraid this one is deep in WP:CIR territory. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:41, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
Very deep indeed. Using email to state his peculiar, if sometimes inscrutable, opinions about other editors isn't mitigating circumstances. The rope is getting shorter. Favonian (talk) 17:47, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

Would you consider protecting the article, Prithviraj Chauhan? User:Chetansinghal[2] has been edit warring a legend into the lead and is now adding unsourced peacock terms. --Kansas Bear (talk) 06:18, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Plain case of edit warring, and the person seems to have stopped after receiving a warning and before crossing the bright 3rr line. Had this not been the case, WP:ANEW would have been the right venue. Favonian (talk) 15:41, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Naguib Mahfouz Image

There are plenty of good looking free pictures of Naguib Mahfouz. I was trying to change the current picture of him on the wiki article because it's so horrible it looks like one of his haters is mocking him with it!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.130.163.223 (talk) 07:46, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

Just for reference, we are talking about edits such as this. If you can find a better picture, which is not encumbered by copyright issues, by all means upload it and use it in the article, but when you perform an experiment that doesn't turn out right, you should revert to the original version and not leave the article with an ugly, red error message where the image used to be. Favonian (talk) 09:39, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry I'm such a noob. I have a burning passion for books and I think I'm going to grow fond of Wikipedia but it'll take time. Thanks a million.

I tried to use the same image from the Arabic wiki article, but still couldn't get it there. It's most definitely free and requires no license. Please advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Elven acher (talkcontribs) 14:53, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

This is tricky. The image used on the Arabic Wikipedia, which you have now uploaded to the English one, looks a lot like the one found at the Nobel Foundation's website, and that one is copyrighted. Each Wikipedia has its own rules for the use of copyrighted material, and for the English one they are listed at Wikipedia:Non-free content. If there were no certifiably free images available, it might have been acceptable, but in this case there is the one previously used: commons:File:Necip Mahfuz.jpg. I quite agree that it's an inferior picture, but the copyright lawyers don't really care. I usually prefer not to get involved in questions regarding non-free content, but my guess would be that our local experts will insist on deleting the image from this Wikipedia. Sorry to ruin your day. Favonian (talk) 15:46, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

The Aftermath of User_talk:69.196.171.23's Block

Good afternoon, Favonian.

I have recently come across a help request for a user you have blocked. Ten minutes after seeing a user reply to the IP user's help me template request, xe reverted the response with snarky comments. I have spoken to an administrator on IRC, who is considering revoking talk page access. I thought I might keep you informed about this matter. Please leave me a talk back (preferably) or ping me if you need me. --JustBerry (talk) 22:03, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

@JustBerry: The latest outburst was quite in line with the general battleground attitude, which was a contributing factor in my decision to put my admin foot down and block. I did weigh the BLP aspect, and a more conciliatory attitude from the IP might have swayed me towards a less drastic response. Revocation of talk page privileges seems a likely outcome at this point. It's now past midnight in my time zone, so I'm calling it a day. Best regards, Favonian (talk) 22:11, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
@Favonian: Thank you for your swift reply. I understand it is late in your time zone; therefore, I will contact another administrator if substantial action is needed. For now, goodnight! --JustBerry (talk) 22:14, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Requesting Zidane page protection

Hi there Favonian. The Zinedine Zidane article is repeatedly vandallized by ip users and new users, its tiresome having to constantly check it. The article was fine until the last protection ended. The article itself is busy and it's only going to get worse with the World Cup. Im requesting a more permanent protection (perhaps a Pending changes protection). Thanks. Mikemikev sock

Any suggestions as to what to do about these? I'm inclined to at least semi-protect Maunus's talk page. I don't know if we can ask for a range block. Dougweller (talk) 08:27, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

I agree that semi-protection is in order at this point. A range block would probably have to be done by a CU – too much SNAFU potential for me to do it. As far as I can tell from the SPI archives, substantial ranges (/16) have been blocked in the past. Favonian (talk) 11:07, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
I was told that the new IPs are too widespread for a range block. Is there a template for article talk pages to redirect to a subpage for IPs? I'm sure that's what is done when things get really bad. Dougweller (talk) 18:14, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
It is the standard operating procedure, and so there really should be a template to guide the bellowing herds of IP editors to the open sub-page, but I haven't been able to locate one. Guess a bit of well-crafted and -formatted prose at the top of the protected talk page will have to do. Favonian (talk) 18:49, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

He has been also creating a lot of seasonal artcles with absolute no source, and that is another major problem. FkpCascais (talk) 16:54, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

Its him, that article List of Macedonian football champions is not much edited, and only he tries allways the same things: ignoring Yugoslavia, pretending some sort of independent vice-kingdom of Macedonia, then atributing old titles of disbanded clubs to current teams, and edits like this one: diff which leave me no doubts its him. Childish vandalism by obviously connected accounts and an IP

Hello. I'd appreciate if you took a quick look at the contributions of these obviously connected users: 217.230.73.89 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), Yourname1 (talk · contribs), Your_Mother123987 (talk · contribs) and KKppYYmmOO (talk · contribs), because I'm tired of their childish vandalism (vandalism that makes it clear that it's a case of WP:CIR). Exemplified by this and this edit on Sundern, repeatedly changing the names of the villages of Langscheid and Stockum to Lange scheide ("long/deep vagina") and Stock dumm ("dumb as a log"). The IP geolocates to the same part of Germany as the subject of the article they have vandalised, showing that it's a bunch of local kids. Yourname1 has returned three times now since the 16th, making the same kind of silly edits each time, while the others were only active on the 16th and haven't been seen since. Thomas.W talk 18:08, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. Being multilingual helps a lot when looking for vandalism, so don't wish you didn't know German. Hello. Please take a look at the contributions of 123et4 (talk · contribs), a user who seems to have a very poor grasp of English, but still insists on adding home-made "translations" to various articles about weapons (such as these: #1, #2, #3, #4), in spite of repeated requests for them to stop (see user's talk page). The way the user just carries on with the disruptive editing, without engaging in a discussion about it, also seems to indicate a competence problem, in addition to their poor English. And it's not a case of not knowing that they have a talk page, because the difference between diff #1 and diff #2 clearly shows that they have read my first message to them. Thomas.W talk 14:26, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello Favonian. Thank you for blocking that block-evading IP. I noticed, though, that you didn't leave a block notice on their talkpage. I also noticed another suspicious account on the Skeleton article. One Tempuser6996. The name is pretty telling, I think, as it basically screams "block evasion" (and even if not actually a sock of the troll, the username+sole edit strongly suggest they're NOTHERE at the very least, I'd say). Mind taking a look and see if you agree (and if so, block them)? AddWittyNameHere (talk) 19:49, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

I don't usually leave block notices with obvious block evaders. In this case, his antics at the talk page rather illustrated the futility of polite gestures. I'll keep an eye on the other person to see, just how "temp" the account is. Favonian (talk) 19:52, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
Ah, okay. Wouldn't have pestered you about it if not for the suspicious user. Good to know someone else is also keeping an eye on the account. AddWittyNameHere (talk) 20:01, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
