Did you ever get help with this? The heading was "Help_with_{{FJC_Bio}}" and it's the first question. No one answered. I have been kind of slow reading the Help Desk archives lately.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 21:12, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

Coronavirus move discussion

Hello Ergo Sum! I do agree with you that "Coronavirus pandemic" would be a good name to the page 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic page. However, the current proposal is to move to "COVID-19 pandemic". I'm afraid your comment will too easily be counted as a "support" to the current proposal. Since you seem to oppose that proposal, I'm very tempted to edit your comment to start with "Oppose" instead of "support". However, that might be illegal... St.nerol (talk) 16:25, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

Apt advice. Ergo Sum 18:13, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

Blocking IP's indefinitely

Why are you blocking IP addresses indefinitely? That's almost never called for. Sro23 (talk) 02:21, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

@Sro23: My general disposition is to block for the shortest amount of time that I think will resolve the issue. In this case, I have noticed a pattern in which multiple IP addresses are engaging in the same repeated vandalism over a long period of time (weeks) on multiple articles. As a result, I have opened a sockpuppet investigation. Given these circumstances, I believe an indefinite block is warranted pending the outcome of the investigation. Ergo Sum 02:32, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to proxy detection, but they appear to be Webhosts or open proxies, so they probably should remain blocked for a while, but it's likely that at some point in the future they will no longer be open proxies. So as long as you do unblock them eventually I guess I don't have a problem with that. BTW, the SPI you're looking for is Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/CGSFH. Sro23 (talk) 02:43, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
  • Hmm, wanted to drop a note about this. IPs should typically not be indefinitely soft-blocked, a medium-duration hardblock makes more sense. The only way IPs are retained for a long-time is when organizations (ISPs/institutions/companies) directly lease it for an indefinite period and even then, it will show up as attached to that organization - this vandalism is using closed proxies which means that the proxy might be used genuinely at a certain point of time or it might cease to be a proxy, making indefinite bans pointless. --qedk (t c) 16:09, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the heads up. I assumed that the sockmaster was using a VPN to bounce around different IPs and that those IP addresses would have to be unblocked at some point. I just implemented an indefinite block as a quick fix to a time-sensitive problem. I intend to unblock them. Ergo Sum 22:06, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

A request

Hello Ergo Sum, we haven't interacted before but I've been following your writing for some time and it's a great source of inspiration. I'm chasing my first FA at FAC right now, and it's a biography of the judge Lord Goff of Chieveley. I read in your bio that you enjoy law, and I thought I'd ask whether you would be willing to weigh in? I'd be very grateful. No worries if not, of course. If you're able, though, the page is linked here. Kohlrabi Pickle (talk) 15:31, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

@Kohlrabi Pickle: Sure, I'm rather busy at the moment off-wiki, but please remind me in a few days if I forget. Ergo Sum 16:50, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
Ergo Sum It's kind of you to help. There's no rush (as far as I know?) and I will be sure to remind you in a few days if that's necessary. Thanks again. Kohlrabi Pickle (talk) 17:06, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
@Ergo Sum: Hello again, this is just a friendly reminder, if you still have the time, to have a look at the article, please. Many thanks. Kohlrabi Pickle (talk) 03:42, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
Will do, Kohlrabi Pickle Ergo Sum 13:14, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for taking the time to write down those helpful comments, Ergo Sum. I am very appreciative and will work on them over the next couple of days. Could I ask that you reproduce them (really just copy and paste?) onto the FAC nomination page, linked here? I'm new to this but I understand that FA nominations can fail for a lack of commenters, and it would probably be helpful to the nomination if the closing admin saw that I've received comments from you and addressed them. Again, though, thank you for your time - I understand that you're busy off-wiki. Kohlrabi Pickle (talk) 01:21, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
Not a problem. I've gone ahead and just moved them entirely to the FAC subpage, to keep the conversation streamlined. Ergo Sum 01:48, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
Thank you! Kohlrabi Pickle (talk) 02:24, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
@Kohlrabi Pickle: If you feel like taking a look at another pending FAC for comparison (and also giving me a hand with one that seems to be stalled), you can see Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Joseph A. Lopez/archive1. Completely optional, of course. Ergo Sum 01:33, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

@Ergo Sum: I'd be delighted to return the favour, and this is especially interesting to me because I have family currently studying at Georgetown. Another newbie question: when does it need to be done by? I've stupidly put up an article at FAC while I have exams going on. Kohlrabi Pickle (talk) 02:21, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Much appreciated, Kohlrabi Pickle. Well, it's been up over 3 weeks, so I'd say within a week or so the FAC coordinators will begin to look at whether it's likely a doomed nom. Between now and then would be ideal. Edit: or were you referring to when the Goff FAC will close? Ergo Sum 02:39, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
Ergo Sum Okay then, I'll get it done within the next week. I was referring to the Lopez one, but it's also useful to know that the Goff one has a lifespan of about a month. Do you know how many reviews it needs for the FAC coordinators to approve it? I know you've said the Lopez one has stalled, but it seems like it already has 2 sets of comments, and I'm not sure what you mean by "stalled". Kohlrabi Pickle (talk) 03:49, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
@Kohlrabi Pickle: In my experience, with 3 supports, an article is good to go. With 2, it's on the fence. Ergo Sum 04:00, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
@Ergo Sum: Thanks! Also, I've written some comments on the Lopez article's FAC subpage. Kohlrabi Pickle (talk) 06:29, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

May 2020

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Points to note:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made;
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes and work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. ElKevbo (talk) 22:41, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

Thank you, ElKevbo, but that is not an edit war. I made two reverts. One of another editor, and one of you. Happy to have you join the discussion that is already ongoing on the talkpage (here). Ergo Sum 00:59, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

TFA

Thank you today for Samuel Mulledy, "about a Catholic priest who had a less-than-stellar track record as a Jesuit. He became the president of Georgetown University, but was relieved after just a few months and then was booted from the Jesuit order. He drifted around and then was re-admitted on his death bed."! - I am in the process of collecting hymns for Pentecost, many relying on Veni Creator Spiritus, and the question came up if that hymn needs quotation marks. Nunc dimittis doesn't. What do you think? - I was surprised how few English hymns have an article. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:55, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Thank you, Gerda Arendt. Interesting question. I really don't know; my instinct would be to place it in quotes, since I can't think of a reason why the English should not be in quotes when other languages are, but I don't have a good justification beyond that. Do you know of any reason? Ergo Sum 17:40, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
I really don't where the line is between a one-word term such as Requiem and Magnificat, two words Nunc dimittis, and three words. I'd understand "Veni creator spiritus", but the capitals English uses clearly mark it as not the normal prose. - In the TFA, I believe that most people would know what Catholic means, but Priesthood in the Catholic Church is really something special ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:02, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Editing news 2020 #3

On 16 March 2020, the 50 millionth edit was made using the visual editor on desktop.

Seven years ago this week, the Editing team made the visual editor available by default to all logged-in editors using the desktop site at the English Wikipedia. Here's what happened since its introduction:

  • The 50 millionth edit using the visual editor on desktop was made this year. More than 10 million edits have been made here at the English Wikipedia.
  • More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
  • Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
  • The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has been increasing every year.
  • Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.
  • On 17 November 2019, the first edit from outer space was made in the mobile visual editor.
  • In 2019, 35% of the edits by newcomers, and half of their first edits, were made using the visual editor. This percentage has been increasing every year since the tool became available.

Vatican ecclesiastical court

Hi Ergo Sum

Curious why you've reinstated a term which simply doesn't appear in the sources or in any of the articles (including the body of the article in question)... Perhaps by some interpretations the Vatican uses "ecclesiastical courts", but as far as I can tell they're not generally called that, and we shouldn't introduce some concept in the lead which is not then backed up or substantiated in the body. Google gives a total of 14 non-Wikipedia hits. I think my change was definitely more clear and more true to what the source says, and was an improvement to the article. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 15:02, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi Amakuru, I don't consider it a "term," but just a phrase made up of two adjectives and a noun. All of Catholic canon law is administered by ecclesiastical courts. Indeed, by definition, any court that is run by a church and decides questions pertaining to religion is an ecclesiastical court (as opposed to a civil court). The Vatican part just describes where the church was located (and also suggests that the case was likely decided from an appellate posture). It would less accurate to simply say a Vatican court or that the case was heard by the Vatican since the Vatican does have non-canon law courts (e.g. that handle petty crime inside Vatican City) and because the Vatican is a county; countries don't hear cases, but their courts do. I really don't see how the phrase "Vatican ecclesiastical court" is inaccurate at all. It was a lawsuit, heard by an ecclesiastical court, in the Vatican. Ergo Sum 15:38, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
OK, thanks for the explanation, and not a massive deal then.  — Amakuru (talk) 15:45, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

Reply tool

The number of comments posted with the Reply Tool from March through June 2020. People used the Reply Tool to post over 7,400 comments with the tool.

The Reply tool has been available as a Beta Feature at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The first analysis showed positive results.

  • More than 300 editors used the Reply tool at these four Wikipedias. They posted more than 7,400 replies during the study period.
  • Of the people who posted a comment with the Reply tool, about 70% of them used the tool multiple times. About 60% of them used it on multiple days.
  • Comments from Wikipedia editors are positive. ("I think the tool has a significant impact; it saves time to reply while the classic way is to move with a mouse to the Edit link to edit the section or the page which is generally far away from the comment. And the user reaches to the edit box so quickly to use the Reply tool.")[1]

The Editing team released the Reply tool as a Beta Feature at eight other Wikipedias in early August. Those Wikipedias are in the Chinese, Czech, Georgian, Serbian, Sorani Kurdish, Swedish, Catalan, and Korean languages. If you would like to use the Reply tool at your wiki, please tell User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF).

The Reply tool is still in active development. Per request from the Dutch Wikipedia and other editors, you will be able to customize the edit summary. (The default edit summary is "Reply".) A "ping" feature is available in the Reply tool's visual editing mode. This feature searches for usernames. Per request from the Arabic Wikipedia, each wiki will be able to set its own preferred symbol for pinging editors. Per request from editors at the Japanese and Hungarian Wikipedias, each wiki can define a preferred signature prefix in the page MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix. For example, some languages omit spaces before signatures. Other communities want to add a dash or a non-breaking space.

New requirements for user signatures

  • The new requirements for custom user signatures began on 6 July 2020. If you try to create a custom signature that does not meet the requirements, you will get an error message.
  • Existing custom signatures that do not meet the new requirements will be unaffected temporarily. Eventually, all custom signatures will need to meet the new requirements. You can check your signature and see lists of active editors whose custom signatures need to be corrected. Volunteers have been contacting editors who need to change their custom signatures. If you need to change your custom signature, then please read the help page.

Next: New discussion tool

Next, the team will be working on a tool for quickly and easily starting a new discussion section to a talk page. To follow the development of this new tool, please put the New Discussion Tool project page on your watchlist.

TFA

Thank you today for John W. Beschter, "about a Luxembourg Jesuit who became a missionary to the rural United States, and did a brief stint as president of Georgetown University"! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:11, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Thanks Gerda Arendt. Ergo Sum 16:45, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Every once in a while, I have a TFA as well, happy that it was also a tribute to Brian, in great collaboration, fine Main page, and see also. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:45, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt I was wondering who wrote that FA. A nice job and a nice tribute. Ergo Sum 14:01, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Kenosha RfC

I commented out your RfC. I think your version of the lead is better than what was restored but I don't think that was a good RfC. It was very nebulous and open ended. I would suggest trying to refine it into a specific difference(s) and say current vs proposed or similar. As posed I think that RfC was going to fail and likely piss off some people. I don't want you to think I was trying to silence your version. Springee (talk) 15:51, 5 September 2020 (UTC)

@Springee: Appreciate the feedback. I thought about how I could best word it but concluded that leaving it open ended would be the most neutral way of framing the issue. I might go back and refine it. Ergo Sum 23:45, 5 September 2020 (UTC)

Georgetown presidents

I am very excited by the prospect of you getting around to Patrick Francis Healy. Please ping me, profusely. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 06:30, 13 September 2020 (UTC)

@Coffeeandcrumbs: I'm excited to get that one up to FA too. I've already done 95% of my work on it. (See the version before I started working on it for comparison). Sadly, it's been sitting untouched at GAN for a while (along with a whole bunch of other GANs on my list). By all means, if you have any interest in doing the GAN review, it'd be much appreciated. Ergo Sum 14:02, 13 September 2020 (UTC)
@Coffeeandcrumbs: Looks like that time has come. I've just nominated Healy as a FAC. Your comments there would be much appreciated. Ergo Sum 13:51, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
Ergo Sum, exciting! I will do a review sometime this weekend. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 16:09, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, Coffeeandcrumbs. I'm fearful that this nom might fail for lack of input, as my last FAC did. I hope not, since Healy was such an interesting person. Ergo Sum 17:19, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

For the record

I apologize for having wasted your time with my pitiful attempts at humor/humour – unless, of course, you did "get" my email. Anyway, here ya go (edit conflict just now from the article's talk page).

The students (we don't know or care how many) and the Jesuits (again, nobody's counting) were all objects of his discipline (the subject) – reading left to right, "...{nbs}}both the students ..." causes us (me, anyway) to stumble right into some{?!) non-Jesuit students. I give up. --Brogo13 (talk) 22:51, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
You are quite right. Turns out it was my obtuseness after all. I've restored your last edit. Ergo Sum 23:58, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

Joseph A. Lopez scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the Joseph A. Lopez article has been scheduled as today's featured article for October 4, 2020. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 4, 2020, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.

We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:10, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
