Why is Itanium part of Wikiproject Oregon?

The Itanium article does not mention Oregon. The wikiproject does not appear to mention Itanium. Given the history of Itanium, I would think that the state would be happier to be associated with a toxic waste dump. -Arch dude 17:15, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Ken Kesey

Hi EncMstr, I reverted to this version of the Kesey article. It was the most recent edit before a vandal dismantled almost the entire article. I tried to indicate that it was the last edit before the vandalism. Is there an easy way to indicate which revision I was restoring to? The only way I know to do it is to manually copy the revision number and the author's name and time, but I suspect there's an easier way? All I changed was the name of one of the subsections, I indicated as such in the summary. Sorry for any confusion. --JayHenry 18:03, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Help: Should we REMOVE/DELETE new page I created?

I feel like I'm 'in way over my head' now concerning the Wikipedia page Fdisk and a new one I just created: Fdisk_(Unix)!!! It seemed like the right thing to do today (esp. after there have been a number of dumps of raw-data postings by those I can only assume are unfamiliar with how to use the wiki editor), but now that I've done further research on the fdisk program, and found MANY more differences between the various flavors offered under UNIX-like and Linux distributions, I feel as if we must go back to a single article for all of them! Can you please look into (and/or suggest others who can decide on this?) as to the best way to proceed? Oh, sorry! I was rushed and didn't carefully read what you had written. As a stub it's a fine article. Deleting it might be the wiser course though, as the fdisk section fdisk#UNIX.2C_Linux_.26_Unix-derived_fdisk is nowhere near being too big or out of control. Just tag the article with something like {{subst:prod|not needed due to redundancy with [[fdisk#UNIX.2C_Linux_.26_Unix-derived_fdisk]]}}. I was using VandalProof to revert it...

User:AVTN/T/1 I saw one of his contributions on Recent Changes via VP and I reverted that. Then I was playing arround with VP and saw that I could search through the Contributions of users. So I did that for many IP users, then I reverted thier edits... Or so I thought. It seems there was an error on that part of VP. Thanks for letting me know, I have sent an error report over here. Goodday, sir, and I do hope this is the page you mentioned for me to post to, if not or otherwise, archive or move this post please at your convenience. And thanks for the lovely coloured box, - more, more for me to read, (Since I don't write at present).

I have read important guideline re Edit Summaries. I understand the action to take, but not wholly the reason, for conflicted reasons. I will apply this action as requested. I will not feel bound to always apply this, but strive. I don't really know why to waste time thinking every time - Edit summary: "I changed a letter b for a letter a in the third sentence down from the bit that goes xyz, which will be edited out tomorrow, so you don't know what it might mean anyway , I was only fixing a spelling mistake, but now I have timed out, and all because I wasted time after time on trying to compose boring edit summaries"; :::::::::::::: (and why should I be doing so many minor edits?? That is (presently), until I get my head around it, I will do as I am told, but I as newbies do , argue against: I still don't begin to understand the WHY of edit summs, and I don't know how to consult up, or observe, or peruse a range of precedents, which is impossible though I try simply by reading articles generally, due to , slowslowintertconnect as - well, amongst other things.

My concern is criticism of my style of doing, I am told, numerous minor edits (and being a crummy writer, ouch). Can't help that bit (try guidelines again, on style, a dark horse), but what are crucial guidelines, precedents, and rationale of minor edits also, please.

GPS modernization

Thanks for the help. I'm going to revert just a few small things:

1. FOC is a contractual term, so it show be capitalized; the system was "fully operational" long before that date.
2. The frequencies are not military, but the military had signals in those frequencies.
3. That chunk at the bottom was a direct quote; the company is named Aerospace. So I've restored it but then used notation to help a reader understand.

Thanks. She had surgery yesterday afternoon to fix things up. The surgeon said "a perfect reduction". He installed two plates, and more than 15 screws near the ankle. The break just below her knee will heal with conventional cast medicine. She was clearly feeling a lot less pain after that, but also much more tired. Help: Any way to have multi-back refs. in footnotes?

I just got done converting all the old <ref> formatted notes to footnotes on the Extended Boot Record page (as "Uncle G" did for the MBR page), but this has messed up getting back to the correct location in the text for footnotes cited more than once! I have no idea if it's even possible to get "Footnotes" to go back to more than one location when cited; like the Ref. notes which automatically add an "a," "b," etc. next to the Ref.# for each place they are cited. I also miss the nice 'highlighting' aspect of the Ref.-type style. Is there a different template (or something) we can use that adds some extra features to these plain footnotes, or do we have to go back to using <ref>'s for such things?

This also relates to an initial concern I had on the MBR page for trying to maintain a difference between what we call a "footnote" and a "reference," and first congratulated 'Uncle G' for doing that, but now I can see why some editors don't want to use the "fn"'s if they'll never have similar features the <ref> style has! North Fork Middle Fork Willamette River

Heh, yes, there does seem to be differing usage, like "North Fork of the Middle Fork...". The words "..of the.." seem to be fairly commonly used when rivers get forked names, but I think "official" names (at least as far as the USGS goes as an authority) tend to omit "..of the..". Perhaps the first sentence of the article should be changed to match the page name? In any case, I'm happy to see more content, yay! I personally know nothing about this particular bit of stream. Here you can get a look at what the other editors think about an article, though generally reserved for articles that are GA- or A-class. You can try a request for feedback, which is used for articles that are start- or B-class rated. If you want to know, just post your question following the directions that are given. Sorry for the slow response; I've been away. I looked at the talk page's history, but didn't see anything that should not have been reverted. Oh, I see: an anonymous user begins a paragraph with an opinion about the subject (instead of the article), and then goes on to a legitimate question. If that's you, skip the opinion; article talk pages are about improving the article, not about discussing the article's subject. (Opinions often slide in, but less blatantly.)

In general, trying discussing a difference such as this with the reverter on their talk page, mentioning the talk page guidelines. Also, if appropriate, mention WP:OWN and WP:3RR. If that fails, ask a few contributors to the article to help. If all else fails, serious intervention begins at WP:AIV. —EncMstr 16:01, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Man, I haven't been able to receive any answer from Roguegeek. He is clearly ingnoring me and not only me. Roguegeek acts as if he owns the article by reverting posts but not leaving any comment. Let me know if something can be done about this.

That looks great! Here's a few others that might be added. One, List of forest fires has several Oregon entries but doesn't have a handy subsection listing. I was thinking the lists about Oregon would each be articles with the potential for more than one item in the list pertaining to Oregon, so List of official U.S. state rodents wouldn't qualify because there is room for a single Oregon entry. external link checker spider strange limit operation

This looks like a very useful tool, so of course I pointed it at Wikipedia:WikiProject Oregon's pages. It appears to have hit the limit value and terminated. There are over 4000 pages in article I gave it to link from, Wikipedia:WikiProject_Oregon/Admin, so I tried typing a few different values in the "Page limit" field, but it seems to do something unexpected with the values I typed in (like 30000 and 9000), instead using limits like 441 and 213. I had set a limit of 500 page in an attempt to prevent abuse (processing times for each page can vary between 7.5 sec and 5 minute (connection timeout)), but I did so using the % operator (remainder after division). I've since changed that now so if you go over the limit it will stays at 500. I've changed the limit on your last job to 5,000, btw. —Dispenser 01:40, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

It finished after about 12 hours running; too bad other items in the queue were delayed.

• Could it process two in parallel, perhaps choosing the longest and shortest jobs?
• How about a way for the initiating user to stop it?
• The summary screen gives total rows; how about adding subtotals for each color category? Maybe even totals for each status code?

I'm working on adding extra slot support, but right now for big jobs like these I'm planning on running them in an independent instance and adding the information by hand to the list. My biggest worry is abuse of the tool, how do I prevent others from stopping jobs they do not own? It could be possible to implement a password system to do this. And on the third point, I'll have to redesign the format to allow meta information.

Now for the questions:

1. Depends, since the data gets dated quickly if somebody works on it. I'll likely delete in two months to prevent the directory from getting too cluttered. I also make the raw data available, which can be opened with excel.
2. It marks unrecognized MIME types, in that instance only application/excel and application/vnd.ms-excel were in the list for a .xls file.
3. That's a bug that I haven't been able to track down. It seems to be related to the server setup.

For the problem of the owner controlling a job, I would think a browser cookie (presumably containing something GUID-like) would be sufficient to identify the user. If they change browsers, computers, etc., or the browser rejects cookies, too bad. Perhaps it could be slightly more friendly with a notice explaining the restrictions.

Maybe the web site could enumerate the recognized MIME types, if nothing else, as an clue for this behavior.

Another idea: what if Link Checker appeared at the top of the navigation bar (http://tools.wikimedia.de/~dispenser/cgi-bin/linkchecker.py), so it looks a little less like Wikipedia. And your talk page link could go in the "actions" group as "questions and comments"—or something like that. —EncMstr 03:34, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

I like the idea with the cookie and am probably going to implement that way, but it is not a top priority. The MIME stuff works on a white list system, the difference between my system and the ones that have come before it (like m:weblinkchecker.py) is the focus on false negatives. This is why the enhanced interface allows you to check the links to see if they're actually false positives.

Since no one has cited a rule and the fact that he was blocked for 31 hours and it is standard practice per the WP:WPRS rules to add the station URL in the infobox and the external links AND MANY stations remain....I have already reverted them. Which was just plain annoying.

Yeah, I was so excited to fix WFC that I didn't see that you'd done it hours ago. And yeah, I was going to get back to the Nestuccas' talk pages and say good job to that one editor for taking out the 2nd person. I'm still thinking it might be nice to split the individual waterfalls into their own articles, but I haven't looked at it closely enough. September WPOR Collaboration of the Week

First off, great job to all WikiProject Oregon folks for last week’s List of Oregon State Parks work. We pounded out six new state park articles: Sarah Helmick, Bald Peak, Bob Straub, Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge, Tumalo, and Peter Skene Ogden. Plus numerous other edits to improve the existing articles. As a reward, we are introducing the COTW award {{WPOR COTW award}}, and this time it goes to User:Woodstein52 for starting three of the articles.

Thank You for the OSI Exorcism

I appreciate your efforts in getting the OSI comparisons out of the introduction of the Internet Protocol Suite article; I suppose the TCP/IP Model may be next. My OSI experience goes back to the late seventies when the model was first defined, in OSI standards and then in protocol testing at the Corporation for Open Systems. Complementing that has been a fair bit of more recent time in the IETF, plus many years of teaching networking and having written books and study guides. Trying to force things into OSI, in my experience, is one of the worst things that can happen to beginners in networking; it leads to nothing but confusion. Howard C. Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge suggestion at DYK

Hi -- Nice article, looks like a fantastic area. I noticed while investigating for DYK that the hook claim "more than California and Washington combined" doesn't actually seem to be covered in the reference? Being in the UK, I don't know anything about reference sources on US Wildlife Reserves and can't find the comparative figures, so I wondered if you would be able to dig out references for them? Mount Hood climbing accidents

Unfortunately, the new article is not eligible. It was split off the Mount Hood article which was too heavy with incidents—as you can probably see. Most of the incidents I wrote December 2006 in response to heavy interest in the three lost climbers, and major misunderstandings of the history and risks. It was particularly vexing to me as a part time ski instructor on Mount Hood, especially hearing the reporters standing around the lodge talking about things without the first clue what they were talking about. —EncMstr 21:57, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Fall WPOR COTW

This week, something a little different. With fall upon us, the photo ops are going to be harder to get, so we have a photo request fulfillment drive. Take a look at the requested pictures for Oregon category or the graphics subproject for what’s needed. Week 1 October WP:ORE COTW

I know everyone has been waiting anxiously for this week’s COTW, so here they are: Barlow Road and Columbia River Plateau. Both are almost Start class, just some formatting and referencing, plus a little expansion and they will be there!

As to last week, it is difficult to track the items we were working on, but I know some pictures were added and at least three red links were removed from Oregon, so thank you to all those who participated. Bull Run Watershed

While the actual physical watershed may only be in two counties, the Bull Run Watershed Management Unit, the area closed to public access, is located in three, including Hood River County... it is a small area of land, but it is still in Hood River County. Dwight911 06:40, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

WPOR CoTW: Don Schollander & Conde McCullough

Greetings WPOR world. Last week was great with the Barlow Road seeing lots of improvement, maybe even B class. Columbia River Plateau also saw some improvement, maybe enough to bump it to Start. On with the countdown, another two Stubs in the High category, both happen to be people: Don Schollander a multi-gold medalist; and then world-renowned bridge architect and all-around swell guy Conde McCullough. Schollander needs sources more than anything, and McCullough needs more of a bio, plus maybe a nice chart for the bridges with type/year/location/length. Bull Run River (Oregon)

I suspect it does deserve at least the content that any other Mount Hood area rivers have. One of the paradoxes of the wilderness rivers is the great challenge to dig up information on them: because they are wild there is little interest in publishing information about them, though their wildness makes them all the more deserving of being written about.... —EncMstr 18:07, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

AWB is the best way I'm aware of to edit a bunch of articles, so please go for it.

Yeah, its something I suggested on the WPORE talk page. I have enough on my mind without trying to decipher something like the page you mentioned. Just a subpage of the project page that explains a few useful coords templates that we can use in Oregon articles, maybe with some Oregon-specific examples, and if you're privvy to the changes in the coords realm, updated so we don't get taken by surprise with things like the change to the Geolinks template. I think the idea is that deleted contributions should be relatively restricted as they are often offensive, defamatory, etc. One of the "advantages" to adminship is that you can see deleted articles, but they are often (as this one was) filled with venom and unpleasantness (racist and graphic nonsense). We are talking apples and oranges

Concerning my questions on Western Oregon University My main question is - I need to know how to obtain permission from an individual liscensed by an organization that holds the copyright, or how to make a footnote for this.

Since I am new to this medium I am having to learn some of the basics, but I never used any of the application brochure material and I completely understand using language that is advertising oriented versus factual. The material I am asking about is concerning university history and the course catalog as well as images. Our pr office is contacted daily concerning using this information for news stories and other reference material so I would assume that the university should be considered a primary source. For example how would I get permission to display the image of the mascot from a state institution (I would assume this is considered good content).

As a web user and designer I do not like comparing traditional printed material like the Encyclopedia Britanica to Wikipedia because they are not the same for multiple reasons. Wikipedia is a reference Web site, but it is not considered a serious research tool by academia. It may consider itself an encyclopedia, but it is still part of the emerging Web media and is not the same. This is good because serious academic researchers many times ignore the principles of what individuals may really want to know or are looking for. People come to wikipedia through search engines not card catalogs and the inclusion of phone numbers and other information that is factually true and relevant to the items that are presented. Also many of the topics listed in Wikipedia would never be included in an encyclopedia, this has more to do with information going out of date and the cost of printing. I completely understand that sales and promotional speach should be omitted, because it is not factual or is opinionated. I also agree with the omission of long lists of classes and other items. But if a source is factually accurate and used as reference material in other media (student population, historical information, degree programs, etc) then it should be useable, but how.

Either way, it's closer than the original value, and the two locations are only 900m apart. However, I attributed it incorrectly: Acme mapper looked it up somehow and gave this location. Thank you for the clean up help on the article. I did adjust the second image (beer label) to allow for better readability but left the first floating per your change. If you don't mind I would like to keep the separate Reference and Note sections, there are different schools of thought on that from what I can tell in the MOS, the reason I did it that way was to emphasize that the book was a general reference as opposed to a specific inline reference or a note used to expand the citation. Forgive me for whining but learning how to edit Wiki is a steep learning curve! I changed the article to "<br/>" as you suggested, I'm not all that up on how the clear all effects browsers, it was a suggestion on the image page when you didn't want a floating box to break across sections (I think). i have some training in graphic design, which is probably not a good thing in this case. I will go back and see about the footnoting, when I helped add references to an earlier article I did combine the two per a suggestion because it was too unwieldy. I resemble that remark! Excuse me for butting in, but since I'm often the one who tags things with {{nofootnotes}}, I'll just say that I do that when I can see that it's going to be much more helpful for future editors if specific facts are cited and there are no inline citations whatsoever. Heck, I've even tagged articles I've written, because I really wished I'd used in-line citations and not general references. There's not really a consensus on the matter, so on the Mo's article, which is obviously well-cited, I wouldn't worry about it. I also note that the military history WikiProject encourages having both a "notes" and "references" section. It is confusing around here. Don't give up! Nice work on Mo's. Question about templates, and formatting

Hi, my son Pete(r) Forsyth suggested I ask you about something I got into over my head tonight....for some ungodly reason (don't I need some sleep?!) I decided to see if I could figure out how to add a map (and a more explicit description) to the page Dospat Dam - I've spent several hours wrestling with location boxes and templates (settlement, lake) - and couldn't quite get what I envisioned. I put my best efforts on Talk:Dospat_Dam - I wonder if you could take a look? There's probably a LOT o' usable "help" on the topic "out there", but I'm wondering if you could point me at specific things? I tend to get lost in the sea of too much info!

Aha, Enc… so YOU'RE the one putting in all those database-slowing extraneous spaces in the Oregon articles! I knew there was something funny about you ;) (I used to use two spaces er, religiously…likely some religion learned from my mom. But I read somewhere that modern proportional typefaces take all that into account. I believed it, because I believe everything I read. (It's why I love Wikipedia.) Thanks for the comments (on my page) - I think I've just gotten too sleepy to think anymore! One of my problems was that I had tried to do a simpler map, but the coordinates just wouldn't work out right, if I copied the SAME coordinates from the map I put up, the location was further south! But after I wrote to you I discovered Template:Location map and maybe that will tell me what I want to know.

As for spaces after periods, (Peter), modern proportional typefaces will do the SAME spacing to the period in Mt. Athos as they do to the period at the end of a sentence - but those two periods are different. The compelling thing for me was finding, in a book called Words Into Type that I used when doing my book, a discussion of this very thing. The author agreed that the trend is towards one space, but commented that (this may not be an exact quote) "some educators feel that this contributes to breaking down the concept of a sentence." Hiya, I would like to move all of the ones that say "Wilderness Area" to just "Wilderness". Does that make sense? Oregon Lottery

There's often a lot of unexplained anon activity on that article--checking the contribs, some of it seems like a generalized anti-lottery campaign, some of it seems pro-lottery, but hardly any of it is done by people with accounts. Yeah I think it either has to do with the fact that it's a ripoff, or else because of increased problems with gambling addiction, or both, but the anon or anons routinely remove wikilinks, categories, etc. from various state lottery articles. Seems like a weird way to keep people from finding out about the lotteries, but some of the edits are subtle enough they go undetected for a while, so maybe it helps them a little. So far it doesn't seem disruptive enough for a block, but we're not Gambler's Anonymous, so if it steps up, maybe I'll see if someone wants to look into the matter. A couple offwiki ideas

Hi EncMstr, I have a couple thoughts I want to share with you.

First, a project of mine, that's grown out of List of Oregon ballot measures: there's a really cool web site, dabbledb.com, that is essentially a platform for creating database apps, without needing to do all that complicated techy stuff. It's sort of like Filemaker Pro, but designed as a web app to begin with. Best of all, the monthly subscription fee is nil, if the content you create is Creative Commons-licensed. So, I put some of the info from the Ballot Measures article in there, and have been structuring it as a database. The more I work on this, the more I realize it has the potential to be a much more powerful resource than any Wikipedia article could be. So, I'm wondering if you'd like to take a look, offer any thoughts, and if you like what you see, conceivably help me build it or suggest other uses for databases that could complement what we're doing at Wikiproject Oregon. Here's the public URL]; if you want to edit or build it, let me know and I'll get you your own login.

Holiday COTW

Coord vs. Geolinks

Per your changes at Yaquina Bay. I take it that "coord" is the wave of the future? The debate about Geolinks is ongoing, but it looks like they will eventually be phased out (and the current way they display is redundant and the wording clunky). Would a Geolinks to Coords replacement drive be a good idea for a future COTW for WP:ORE or should we wait until the matter is settled once and for all? Katr67 (talk) 18:22, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't know, but it feels like {{coord}} will be the only survivor. Since it is a superset of the others, converting them to redirects to coord would be the obvious interim solution, until a bot can replace them. As you might have noticed by my placement within Yaquina Bay, it's not clear where the pure title form should go in the article. Perhaps it's a call for infoboxen establishment for all articles using coordinates, especially boxen accepting a coordinate= parameter, instead of the icky lat_deg, lat_min, lat_sec, ... form.

I think your "feeling" is right on the money. I would still be tempted to put the coords at the bottom of the page, but like I'm always saying "I don't care as long as it's consistent". And I wouldn't hold my breath about a bot replacement anytime soon, so I may start converting articles as I run across them. I really did like having the links in the el section though. Too bad we can't do something with user prefs that would accomodate that. Good idea about the infoboxes. I tend to avoid them except for NRHP articles... Katr67 (talk) 19:43, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Ah, sorry, I missed that! Glad you noticed, and thanks. You know, there were supposed to be 5 sections, but I screwed up. The breakdown that AM came up with originally had an "early history" era, between "native peoples" and "pioneer." (I added "geologic" to cover the stuff before "native peoples.") Not sure the best way to deal with this, but probably adding "early history" back, with a little more info on Spanish/English/American exploration by sea would be a good thing.

No good pictures underwater. There seemed to be a negative space wedgie affecting optical equipment: A new mask needed serious attention to prevent from fogging (fixed after the first dive), brought the wrong housing for my 6 megapixel cameras, and opted not to take the camcorder housing on the trip at all (bulky and not planning on doing much diving). I borrowed a 2 megapixel camera, but returned it without uploading the photos. Now, if you want land images, it would be possible to fill your hard drives.... —EncMstr 16:55, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Hood

No sign of them. There was a big search in September, when the snowpack tends to be at its lowest. (See http://www.pmru.org/pressroom/headlines/20070908SearchforMissingBodies.html) I think there was a smaller search in October, since the snows didn't begin until late this season. That would be an excellent research project, but very challenging. Of the list at Mount Hood climbing accidents, I suspect that two could be intentional disappearances and they're now elsewhere with assumed identities. Even more challenging would be the people who didn't tell anyone where they were going, and died there somehow. As for "known bodies," I have a vague recollection of a half dozen or so since the 1970s, though some could well be duplicates. —EncMstr 00:00, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

The obvious question is what might have happened to the two from a year ago, but it's probably not easy to find such relatively small objects. You don't realize how big Mt. Hood is until you get close to it. And unlike Everest, where they bodies just stay up there forever, frozen, there could be freezing and thawing on Hood and the bodies could decompose over summer, right? Perhaps, but they're almost certainly under snow, which is why they haven't been found—and therefore probably intact. My bet is they're in Eliot Glacier somewhere about here. If I were them, I'd probably have headed downwind for improved vision and warmth, try to follow Cooper Spur, but probably get disoriented, veer left and tumble down it bringing a lot of snow on top of me.

As for the size: after driving to Meadows or Timberline, it's either so nice the immenseness of the land is easily overlooked, or it's so awful it's invisible. Next time you're out in the snow, remove any skis/snowshoes/etc. and walk a ways on ungroomed snow. Then imagine doing that for miles in severe weather not really knowing if you're going a good direction. Doubt about each step really wears one out. Aha. So they are probably buried under a small "avalanche" of their own making, and if they are found someday, it will probably be by chance. As for what you describe about walking under blizzard conditions... well, that's why I like to admire mountains from a safe distance. :) One thing for sure... if you're on a mountain, and are not sure where you're going, it's probably a good idea to stop. Oregon GA COTW

Howdy to WikiProject Oregon members, time for another edition of the Collaboration of the Week. As you may have already noticed, our flagship article Oregon is up for the third time as we make a push to get WP:GA status before going for WP:FA. Since this will take some time to get where it needs to be, this will be the COTW for more than just a week. On another note, just a general good job/pat on the back to the project for a great 2007, the first full year of the project. We had 83 DYKs about Oregon, improved one article to FA, and went from around 4 GAs to 17 GAs. Plus numerous new articles, improvements to existing, the introduction of the COTW, and the introduction of article assessment at the project. Again, great job and here’s to a new year. Judging by your number of reports to AIV, you seem to be regularly involved in admin related work anyway, so there wouldn't be a problem. multiple consecutive edits

I assume you're talking about Steamboats of the Coquille River, a new page which IMHO is a fine little article. It has images, sources, and no OR. It has a navbox which I created myself. It takes me a bit of work to make an article look good on the screen, probably because of my own lack of skill I guess. But every edit I made to it was fully described in the edit summary. I was deliberate in doing that so that people could more easily track the edits if they wanted to. After doing all that, the first comment I get on the article was yours, and you don't contribute anything to the substance of the article or even say anything about the substance but mention only the number of the edits. Itanium

I was just adding this article to the portal's selected article section as we are adding all the GA quality articles. But when we add them we try to have an Oregon tie in the small text section, and I couldn't find anything about Oregon in the article. I know Intel is big in the state and all, but what connection is there to this chip set? I tried looking through The Oregonian archives for connections like it was developed or produced here, but I could only find that there was some testing on it here. Indeed I do. I used to play volleyball with a key Itanium project member. I'm not sure which release: there were at least four. I think the first was developed in California. But newer versions were developed and prototyped in Hillsboro, as were most processors of this era. Maybe an Intel document would source this? Account creation

Account creation is limited to experienced users and administrators. I can't find a definition of experienced users, but due to database limitations, it's always defined in terms of time since the account was registered (or I believe actually number of total contributions to the wiki since the account was registered), rather than number of contributions. For these purposes, a year and a half would be plenty, even though the user has no contributions. As to why - who knows? Perhaps they were confused, perhaps they were experimenting, perhaps they regularly use their account to view Wikipedia and wanted to create an alternate account to view it with different preferences. With all due respect ... it's not even close. Without doing a lot of digging around amongst WP policies, guidelines, essays, etc., this is an encyclopedia! What would someone reading in Mozambique find interesting about I-5? What would somebody reading the article 20 years from now find interesting? By those standards, a 3.5 day closure with no permanent aftereffects except some local annoyance is far from notable. Just imagine if every moderate weather-related Interstate closure were noted for the centuries to come .... Again, please don't take offense, I'm sure that it was very disruptive to the residents of the area for a few days, and to truck traffic for that time, but it is not really an encyclopedic fact! Kastelorizo, Kalimnos, Astypalea

Good morning EncMstr, there is someone that keeps removing foreign names from Greek Islands Articles. This is an old issue, and two years ago a consensus about the usage of foreign names in geographic articles has been reached. I saw that you reverted some of them, and I ask you if it is possible to protect these articles. I don't think that it makes sense to waste energies in continuing to discuss about this issue with people who remove this names just in name of chauvinistic/nationalist reasons. (But it's late at night....:-) I followed a trail of destruction and cleaned up whatever they'd done. Unfortunately, the article protection policy doesn't address such a case clearly. Personally I feel these articles require a much higher level of edit warring (many times per day) to justify overriding Wikipedia's tag line the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit.

I looked for a pattern of vandalism to see if a user-level block might be in order, but found those edits tend to be at intervals of a few weeks by a different anonymous editor each episode, so that wouldn't help. I sympathize with the frustration of the situation. I suggest keeping the articles watchlisted and reverting as soon as you see undesired changes. Perhaps any associated wikiprojects could be solicited to help too. It might be satisfying to keep in mind that an anonymous editor has to work much harder than a registered user to watch for article changes, so presumably they are more likely to get worn down first. Maybe they'll just go away.

Other ideas:

• Engage them in a discussion, and point them to the previous consensus.
• Insert HTML comments <!-- comment --> making your case for leaving it near the text so that an editor who intends to delete it is sure to see it.
• Move the disputed text to a new section (==Toponym==) or to a footnote.

Depoe Bay, Oregon

Mostly I don't think the article for the town belongs in the category 'Bays of Oregon'. Depoe Bay the geographical feature itself is barely the size of the small marina in it, and seems out of place on the list with Yaquina, Tillimook, Young's, et al.24.21.157.2 (talk) 09:40, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

User:Gregs the Baker

the content dispute is that the user Gregs the baker, is making claims on the article geordie which are backed up with non-reliable sources which are not valid because the sources in question do not understand what the topic of the subject is, thus making a clear mistake in what they are refering to. On the other hand, the Ip who is edit warring has issued a series of posts for the editor to read, which the editor has shamelessly ignored and neglected. I took a shot at it, but there is an inconsistency in the formatting of the table beginning the rows for media:Cesar Franck - Sonata in A, 3rd movement.ogg. Maybe you could fix that first?

I spent some time trying to debug it, but there's still some inconsistency. It appears the macro should need 874 repetitions (873 entries, plus one for the header), but 720 completes okay, 725 does not.

Found the problem. There were leading blanks on several hundred row separators. I don't think any of those need the style="height:110px" as the header style should provide that. But I'll complete the first task first. —EncMstr 22:30, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

The separate-row-editing feature of media of the day could be made to work on the list, but would it be helpful? Most experienced Wikipedia editors have some experience with editing tables. A refactoring such at media of the day is very unusual, confusing, and would tend to make simple edits difficult. For example, rearranging the column order, or adding a new column I would not have volunteered. With the whole table in a single article, it's pretty straightforward, but the other way requires editing 874 (or more) articles to achieve the same effect. That would not be advisable unless the table proved to be very stable, or there was an automatic way to convert between variations.

As for increased user-friendliness:

• Why is there a row number column? What's it used for?
• And why is it in a separate table?
• Why is the submitter in the table? Wouldn't that be best found in the media's article page? Stripping away user: confused me.
• Maybe add a date of recording?
• How useful is the what links to this file? column? As that can dynamically change, won't that be a hassle to keep updated? Again, the media's article page "what links here" provides up-to-date information, if desired....

Hi, thanks very much for those ideas. Regarding the column for "what links to this file", the main objective of the Sound/list is to list musical works that are (or should be) linked by Wikipedia articles. In other words, we're screening out all the duplicative and crappy music in the world, and only listing musical works that are good enough to be linked by Wikipedia articles. And in order to accomplish this goal, it seems that we need a column to indicate what Wikipedia articles link a particular musical work.

Earlier this evening, I wrote a comment about how we can keep that column (i.e. the "what links to this file") up to date.

So far, no one's responded to my comment, but I asked whether we can put some code into every box in the "What links this file" column, so that it fills itself in automatically. After all, like you said, why should we waste our time doing it, if it can be done automatically? Each block in the column could automatically list what Wikipedia articles link to the ogg in question (perhaps with a "more" button if necessary). I'm not suggesting that each block in that column should list the full names of every Wikipedia article that links to the ogg in question, but rather that a number be provided. For example, the article on the surfer Pat O'Connell is linked by 1, 2, 3, 4,5, 6, 7, and 8. Do you know if it's possible to write code that would provide output like this in our "What links this file" column?

Regarding your other comments above, I inserted row numbering so people can more easily see how many works there are in the table, and how many works by a particular composer or performer. Keep in mind that the table is sortable, whereas the numbering will not change because it's in a separate table.

Although a "date of recording" might be useful, I was hoping we could keep the table somewhat narrow so that it will fit on a computer screen. And people can get that info by clicking on the blue "i" thingy.

I wasn't the one who put the "submitter" in the table, but I don't mind it at all. It gives the submitter some recognition and pride, which is all to the good if we're trying to encourage people to upload more music, and expand the list.Ferrylodge (talk) 06:43, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Redirect, Pinus peuce

Sorry about that redirect screw-up. Unfortunately, I can't find the page anymore.. the Pinus peuce page, that is. It appears the redirects for Macedonian pine and / or Balkan Pine are stuck in a loop. What is the procedure for redirecting an existing page? I can almost never find explanations on these types of procedures on Wikipedia. If you can direct me to the instructions, I can easily learn them. Is that better? I think I might have inadvertently left a redirect at the top of Pinus peuce. As for directions, this was a simple case of editing the redirect to see what it was doing. Editing redirects seems a little weird at first because when you try to view the page, it redirects. But the target page has a little "redirected from <whatever>" at the top: just click on <whatever> and then you can see the redirect page, edit it, see history, etc. —EncMstr 20:02, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

The problem is not specifically the deletion of text, but that this user is changing many of my edits (including senseless reversions) in an attempt to harass me. I believe this is considered vandalism under WP:VANDAL in the categories of "Blanking" and "Sneaky Vandalism". Please look at the edit histories of the IPs on the sockpuppet page. Yes. This is an attempt to start a "good hand" account by the same user. In either case, it is still a violation of WP:SOCK as an evasion of the block in the first place. If he wanted to come back, he is certainly welcome to plead his case and show remorse; he has not done so. He is not welcome to start a new account to avoid problems with the old. I'm pretty sure the unprotect request at WP:RFPP was by Pomte (talk · contribs). I saw recent protects, but both Nick (talk · contribs) and Chick Bowen (talk · contribs) hadn't been active for more than five or six hours, so I expected it would be some time before they could reply. I unprotected the article and monitored it for 4-5 hours: nothing bad happened—just a few uncontroversial edits—which I took as confirmation that indeed the dispute was over. Alas, I had no internet access for most of the day, and regret not closely watching it ready to protect it again. Sorry you had to clean up the mess I was responsible for. Reportable?

Cbrown285 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · blacklist hits · AbuseLog · what links to user page · count · COIBot · Spamcheck · user page logs · x-wiki · status · Edit filter search · Google · StopForumSpam) seems hell bent on removing redlinks, and I'll assume this is because of a misunderstanding about what redlinks are for. I've reverted several of his/her edits but is there some easier way to do this? Every page I've looked at removed what looked like viable redlinks, especially ones in succession boxes, so I would guess all of the recent edits are similar. I've left notices on his/her talkpage so hopefully it will stop. Though if it turns out to be vandalism I suppose it would be easier to do an admin rollback? Katr67 (talk) 02:46, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Why did you apply protection when it was already protected? I assumed that is the basic inter-admin semaphore: click on "protect", examine log entry, if none active, protect it, if no warning, tag the article and mark it off the request list. Haha, no see I use TWINKLE for my protections, and I opened TWINKLE and checked of the stuff that needed to be checked and wrote a funny protection description in line with the whole Sparta/300/This is Sparta! genre, yet I decided not to use so i wrote the basic protection summary. Sometime when I was deciding what to write, you protected the page. After I finished the TWINKLE stuff, I clicked the protect button on TWINKLE and then my protection overrode your protection (Think of it as an edit conflict for protections, just no warning when you do it). Of course after I protected it, TWINKLE took me to the pages history and I saw you had protected between the time I looked at the log and the time I protected, and saw that you had already protected it. It really cant be avoided, it is just a weird timing thing where one admin protects a page right before another admin does. Thats why I offered to meet in the middle. I don't know. Different parts of the country have different ways of reckoning jurisdictions. For example, in Kentucky, they are big on counties. Where you do live? Hazzard County.. In Oregon, counties have much less to do with the way most people think. A techy project?

Hey there, I have an idea, which I think is pretty simple, but I'm lacking in the technical expertise to do it. I'd like to run all the Top-level Oregon articles, and a few others, through http://strats.grok.se , and compare how many times they were viewed in February. My first thought was to make some kind of script that would open them all in Firefox tabs, and then manually copy-and-paste the results; but maybe there's an even better way. Maybe something using lynx or wget??

I'm usually on a Mac, but have access to Linux and Windows boxen too.

Is this an easy task for you? Not looking for you to put a lot of time in...

Only if you are going to run the script yourself. It generates the wikitable result including non-underscored blanks and wikilinks. So, dumb techy questions. I took the script above, pasted it into a text document, deleted the ellipsis, saved it, and turned on the "execute" bit. Just wanted if I could make it work for the M36 and Potter articles. Then I went to that directory and typed "./table.txt". The output:

For the first question: I'm not sure. It does look like they (Kazi22 & 65.7.239.237) share the same editing style and tendency to blank pages and sections. But the part where they talk to each other makes me think it's two close buddies or brothers or something. Still, that says that if one is blocked, the other probably should be too. :-)

As for one of those also being Peter Vogel—it doesn't seem like it: He doesn't have even a single edit on any talk page. Only article editing, whereas the other two are like 50% talk pages. Peter's edits are sometimes helpful, correcting things, adding content, even though he was blocked for doing that disruptively by not working with anyone else, talking, or writing a single edit summary. In contrast, the other two sometimes use the summaries for attacks, etc. I don't consider the edit summary conclusive because—if it's all one person—they might have "discovered" edit summaries in February. (Peter's last edit was in October).

March 14 OR COTW

Hello again or welcome if you are new to WP:WikiProject Oregon! Last week we did a picture drive and a NRHP creation drive. It’s hard to track the picture results, but I know I saw quite a few pictures added, so great job. With NRHP we added 7 that I saw: Mitchell Recreation Area, Salem First United Methodist Church, Portland City Hall, Crater Lake Lodge, Central Library (Portland, Oregon), Watchman Lookout Station, and Alvin T. Smith House; with most now nominated for DYK’s! So great work everybody.

This week, its back to stubs with one of the largest newspapers in the state, The Register-Guard, and a request with Oregon Coast.
