Class questions

Hi Elysia (Wiki Ed). I am the instructor for Cellular Neurobiology this spring. My class has all of their neuroscientists identified for writing biographies. I have two questions. For some of the neuroscientists there are autobiographies published on the Society for Neuroscience webpage. I have told them to read these for information but then try to get an independent source for the information since it was written by the person themselves. For example, if they state that they won an award, the students should go to the webpage of the organization that gave the award to get a source. Hopefully they will be able to find everything elsewhere. Is it ever acceptable to use autobiographical info? Secondly, for photos, if there is no photo on the commons, can they use photos from University websites or society websites or do they need to request permission? Since all individuals are past presidents of the Society for Neuroscience, their webpage has a picture of every individual.

Heads up that my students will be putting a draft in a sandbox or user subpage for review on March 23. I have told them that they can't go live without your approval. That is what Ian asked us to do in the past. Is that how you want this to be done?

Science and Society course assistance request

Hello Elysia (Wiki Ed). I registered for the Science and Society course and see when that occurred it created something on the top of my Talk page. However, something about it does not seem configured properly, as I see coding there but nothing appears directly on the page itself. I looked at some of the pages of others taking the course as well, and it appears to be the same with them, too. Wanted to let you know as we are about to begin. FULBERT, I believe all is well! Sage is yet to be at work yet since he's on Pacific time, so I could be terribly wrong, but I think the intention of that edit is to essentially make a null edit, so participants who do not have a user talk page will have a blank one created by enrolling in the course. I see that the edits to participants' user pages were successful in creating the userbox, as is typical.

Hi Elysia, better late than never (well, I hope). I'd appreciate if you could take a look at my article-in-progress in my sandbox as part of the "request feedback" assignment User:Icy13/Deep_state. My main hope to contribute is the User:Icy13/Deep_state#Scholarly_Understanding section. I have fleshed out a few places but the rest is in block-outline form. I'd appreciate if you could give me some feedback on the overall structure and intent of this section and how it might fit or be improved to meet Wikipedia's goals. Saving without publishing?

    Beach cleaning is a solid litter removing the process from beaches and water banks. Humans beings consciously or unconsciously pollute the marine environment by discarded human-made materials such as plastic bottles and bags, fishing gears and nets, cigarette buds, tires, rubbers, paper, and textiles et cetera. Such solid materials drift from oceans onto lands and accumulate on beaches. These contaminants are called “marine debris” and harms ecology, health, and economy or coastal tourism (Krelling, 2017).
    Beaches are recreational areas and attract many local or international visitors for tanning, swimming, walking or surfing. But a contaminated beach might impact the environment and economy through the globe, because the marine debris may be unattractive for many beach users due to aesthetic value or health concerns. Ballance, et al. 's (2000) study shows that a clean beach is a very important determiner for many local and international tourists in South Africa. According to the study, local and international tourists choose to visit the country because of beaches and proper climate conditions. If the tourists do not find a clean bleach, they travel to different regions of the country to find a clean beach (Ballance, et al, 2000). So, cleanliness is very important for the tourism industry of countries. 
    A clean beach can be an indicator of the environmental quality and development level of a country. Beach Cleaning Health Index is the cleaning classification standard of countries and their beaches such as European countries. The European beach classifications are A for excellent, B for good, C for regular, and D for bad (Araújo et al. 2008). 

Beach cleaning demands some management arrangements, cleaning methods, special tools, and some human sources. recreational beaches classification in a rank of four indicators

Photo Question

Elysia,

Hello! I am in Dr. Fleet's Genetics class and I am working on Jenny Tung's page. I would like to insert a photo of her, but the search function on the editing dashboard doesn't have any images of her. I did find an image of her on Duke University's website, but I do not own this photo and would like to cite it, so I cannot upload it from my device. I saw where there was the option to upload it to wikipedia, but when I click on the link the following error message occurs, "Permission Error: You do not have permission to upload this file, for the following reason: The action you have requested is limited to users in one of the groups: Autoconfirmed users, Administrators, Confirmed users." In the "Apathy" article page, why was the citation removed, but the text that cites that citation stayed there?

Unknow0059, looks like you added a citation to an article that was not reliable. Most wordpress sites are not suitable for inclusion on Wikipedia. Class Question Marquette Neurobiology 2020

Hello Elysia, I'm a student at Marquette University doing our Wikipedia project. As I was trying to upload a picture of our person on Wikimedia Commons, I received an email saying that the picture might be taken down due to release rights. I received the photo from the person herself, so if I want to prevent the photo from getting taken down, do I need to contact her again to give her consent or would I have to find the photographer of the photo and get their consent? Ecampe, hi, we have to ensure that all pictures we upload to Commons are photos with acceptable copyright licensing. That means:

• You can upload photographs you have taken, because you own the rights to them and can release them to Wikimedia
• You can upload photographs published on other websites with compatible licenses such as CC-BY-SA, CC-BY, or CC0.

The easiest thing for you to do would be to ask the person who owns the copyright of the image (almost always the photographer of the photo, not the subject) to upload the image themselves to Commons and release it. The metadata of this photograph identifies the copyright holder as Peter Goldberg, so they would need to upload it or explicitly give permission for it to be used on Commons. You can also try to go through OTRS which is also used to verify and archive licensing permissions.

Images and copyright are challenging, which is why many Wikipedia biographies and other articles do not have images--none have been released under a compatible license. NSV Sandbox

Can you look at the edits I made on the lead for the no scalpel vasectomy page to see if they are ready to publish? Also, if I want to change what's in the box on the right (e.g. add NSV next to keyhole vasectomy) and add under specialty - family medicine, general surgery, family planning - how do I do that? Lookwhatimook, you should have a notification, but I left feedback for you here. The box in the right is called an "infobox", which is a kind of template. To edit the infobox, go into edit mode, and then click on the box. A popup box appears saying "template" and "edit"--click "edit". You can then scroll through the fields to see what kinds of information the infobox can support. There's also a "add more information" option at the bottom to display all the fields that the infobox has to offer, though no article will use all the fields of its infobox. I published my edits and changed the infobox. I want to work on another section of the article, the technical procedure. Do you recommend emptying out my existing sandbox and copy/pasting the new section that I"m working on there? Also, it's unclear to me by there is a section eligibility criteria for India in the article. Is that the type of question I could leave in talk and see what happens? Lookwhatimook, if you are feeling more comfortable with editing now, you can try editing the article directly. We recommend the sandbox for getting your "sea legs" with editing, but most editors directly edit the article themselves. If you feel more comfortable using the sandbox, you can clean out your sandbox and bring the new section in that you want to work on.

There is probably a section for India because one person wanted to expand the article and they had a particular interest in India. You can either remove the content as what we call "undue weight" on one aspect of the subject, or you can attempt to balance it by adding in information from other regions of the world. I got a talk message that someone reverted a change I made because it was not constructive. Can you talk a look? The change, as far as I can tell, was deleting a citation that didn't make sense to me. Maybe I am looking at the wrong citation? Hi Lookwhatimook looks like the reverting editor is patrolling for vandalism. Something about your edit might have come across as vandalism by the automated software that assists in vandalism detection (also they didn't leave an edit summary, so I can only guess). You should leave them a message on their talk page by clicking "new section" on the top toolbar. Something like, "Hi, I saw you reverted my edits to No scalpel vasectomy. Can you tell me what problems you identified with my edits? Thanks." It's possible they reverted your edit accidentally and this is a misunderstanding, but you'll want to check before restoring the content. Student articles stuck in draft mode waiting for review

Hi, most of my students articles went live this week, which you know since I noticed your edits. However a couple are stuck in drafts waiting for review. It states that this can take 3 months or more which would be long after the class is over. One of them doesn't say anything is wrong; William D. Willis. The other was denied and it states that it has been resubmitted; [Chao]. I have asked the students what they have done but with the class going entirely online they have been overwhelmed. Wikiwheels93, It might be helpful to you to look over Wikipedia's Manual of Style for medical content. Specifically they have a section here for the suggested layout for medical procedures and surgeries. For example, it suggests a "history" section to describe how the procedure was developed and by whom, and when it was first used. Wikiwheels93, yes, it seems like technique is the same thing as the description of the procedure. I think a separate history section could be a good thing. I see that there is mention of the history in the lead, but not in the body of the article. Remember that the lead is supposed to be a summary of the rest of the article--it isn't supposed to have any novel content.

Also, don't feel like you have to exclusively conform to that list of sections--they're noted as suggested layouts, not mandatory layouts. I noticed you got rid of your "Life with a Mitrofanoff" section. I thought that that information was important. Maybe it belonged in a "Recovery" section or a "Recovery and maintenance"? Wikiwheels93, nope, just a suggestion that may be helpful for some kind of standardization of our medical articles! You can access all the previous versions of the article from the history tab, including versions that have content that's been removed [1]. That way, you don't have to rewrite anything. Yshibutani it looks like this is no longer something you're interested in? I can see that you have moved your sandbox to Tortula muralis. If you still want your sandbox at a different title, go to your sandbox and start a page move as discussed on this training slide. Help with an Image

Hi Elysia (Wiki Ed)! recently you helped me identify that the image that I uploaded for a project did not have the proper information to allow it to be on Wikipedia. I reached out to the sender of the image, and I am hoping that she is able to send the proper information to Wikimedia. I just wanted to let you know that I took those steps (as I need to re-upload the image in order to get the link to send the permission request) in case it pops up on your radar that the image has returned. I think I put the proper tags on it to say that permission is pending, but if there is something more that I have to do, could you please let me know how I can take the steps to remedy the situation?

Muneuro, thanks for going through the right channels to show proof of permission! It can be a bit tedious at times, but Wikipedia has to be careful not to host material that violates copyright law, or it could be subject to legal actions. I do not believe that further action is required from you at this time. If you edit again in the future, the easiest course of action is to simply ask the copyright holder to upload the image to Commons so that they can give the rights away. Help with Citations

Hi Elysia (Wiki Ed)! I'm trying to help a student in Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/University of Oklahoma/Japanese Environmental History (Spring 2020) with citations. He's citing multiple pages from a book. Each citation in the references gives the full information for the book rather than a truncated version. Is there anyway to consolidate or shorten these references. You can see what I'm talking about in citations 20-22 at User:Jamespgj/sandbox.

Presumably the student thought it sufficient to just cite the Stanford profile. Date grammar suggestions for the Lolita Lebrón entry.

My suggested changes are in bold:

“In 1952, after the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico was promulgated, the Nationalist Party began a series of revolutionary actions, including the Jayuya Uprising.”

The dates are wrong. The Jayuya Uprising took place in 1950, before the Commonwealth was declared.

She became the leader of a group of nationalists, who attacked the United States House of Representatives in 1954.

Should be a group of nationalists, which attacked.

She was incarcerated as a result. Lebrón remained imprisoned 25 years, when President Carter issued pardons to the group involved.

Should read: until President Carter issued pardons in 1979.

After their release in 1979, the nationalists returned to Puerto Rico, where independence movements received them with a celebration.

Hello, curious as to why this draft was moved back to userspace? it is a userspace draft which has been submitted for review (it is still submitted) so the review instructions are, to move it to draftspace. Eagleash, Hi, the editor who was working on this is a participant in a course I'm facilitating. They errantly submitted it to AfC, which does not work well with the course timeline, since AfC has such a variable timeline. They asked to have it moved back to their sandbox.

OK, thanks for clarifying. I have removed the submission template (which was at the bottom of the draft) so it will sit in the sandbox until whatever the next step may be. FWIW drafts submitted in userspace tend to get reviewed pretty quickly as its what you come to first at CAT:AFC and those that are moved to draftspace are also often reviewed quite quickly (in my experience). Also FWIW it's not too far from being accepted (IMO) but sourcing needs improvement I think. If the goal is to get it into mainspace, it might be an idea to try to speed up the process somehow. Arlene Paige Maclin Addison

Arlene Paige Maclin Addison, a physicist, was born on June 7, 1945 on a tobacco farm in Rawlings, Virginia. Her father Otis Maclin (1905-1972) received a third grade education in Brunswick County and her mother Alice Matthews Maclin (1906-1991) received a seventh grade education in Brunswick County, which was the highest education offered to African Americans in the county at the time. She had four brothers, George, Jesse, Russell and Leroy and four sisters, Julia, Constance, Roxanna and Nannie. Since there is a 22 year age difference between the oldest George and the youngest Nannie, all of the siblings never lived in the same household. Arlene is the eighth of the nine children and the only one who went to college. Her maternal grandfather was named George Matthews (1840-1920) and was a slave and stockman or breeder on the Creed Haskin's Plantation. Creed Haskin's Plantation was located on the Northernmost tip of Brunswick in a place called Mount Donum. This plantation was located between Brunswick County and Dinwiddie Counties. The land was claimed by eminent domain in the late 1930s or 1940s to build what is now known as Fort Pickett.

As a young child of only three months old, Arlene was diagnosed with congenital bilateral club feet. For most of the first five years of her life, she spent time at Saint Phillip's Children's Hospital for a series of nine operations performed by Dr. Carpenter to straighten her feet. Despite these early difficulties, Arlene thrived as a child and was taught to read by the nurses in the hospital at a very early age. She loved books and learning and excelled in school.

She attended Hickory Run Elementary School for grades 1-6 from 1951-1957, and Rawlings Elementary School from 1957-1958. In 1958, she attended James Solomon Russell High School graduating with honors in 1963.
