A barnstar for you!

The Admin's Barnstar
There isn't a Checkuser's Barnstar but consider this one to be for your SPI efforts. I just noticed how many SPI cases you got to today! They certainly pile up quickly and I'm sure those editors who filed them appreciate your, and other CUers, getting to them, whatever the results turn out to be. I imagine that focusing so much of your on-Wikipedia time on sockpuppets could be dreary so here's a token of appreciation for your efforts! Liz Read! Talk! 00:31, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
@Liz, thanks for the barnstar! It can get a bit dreary at times, but better than the cases sitting for months while the socks continue to be disruptive. Thanks again and happy editing, Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 10:59, 28 June 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol needs your help!

New pages awaiting review as of June 30th, 2023.

Hello Dreamy Jazz,

The New Page Patrol team is sending you this impromptu message to inform you of a steeply rising backlog of articles needing review. If you have any extra time to spare, please consider reviewing one or two articles each day to help lower the backlog. You can start reviewing by visiting Special:NewPagesFeed. Thank you very much for your help.

Hello, I’m posting this message to inform you that I am currently appealing your topic ban on me. As you had previously stated, you would not lift it but you would leave it up to other uninvolved administrators. Still, following guidelines, I wanted to inform you.

Community sanctions mostly un-updated

Hey. Maybe I'll do it myself at some point, if I have the time (bigef), but as a way also of a reminder / magic, I just noticed in passing that virtually all the community-authorized sanctions, active and defunct alike, have not been updated to CT. I first saw that it @WP:GS/IRANPOL, which reads: For the specific Committee decision that rescinded or modified these community sanctions, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Iranian politics#Discretionary sanctions — an incorrect link, since that (Remedy 4.3.1) was changed to #Contentious topic designation. And so on.

So then I took a non-exhaustive look at a few others: WP:CASTE (active), WP:GS/COVID19 (defunct), WP:GS/Crypto (active), WP:SCW (active), WP:GS/IPAK (defunct), and WP:GS/PAGEANT (active) — of those, only the last two had been updated (i.e. not going on about discretionary sanctions, etc.). I think that it would work towards lowering the confusion quotient to get all of them updated to CT — I was gonna say confusion on the part of new users, but after this (the impetus for my discovery), I'd also say veteran ones. Thanks as always. El_C 15:55, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

@El C, thanks for pointing this out. I've gone through the ones in the category and updated them to mention contentious topics instead of discretionary sanctions. If you see any other not updated text, feel free to report to me or update as you see fit. Thanks and happy editing, Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 23:08, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

SPI

Hi, can you please take a look at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/ChandlerMinh, Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Sulshanamoodhi and Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Mustafdesam. These are waiting on the queue for a long period of time and share same geolocation. Please take necessary action before they cause more harm. 117.254.35.136 (talk) 07:09, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

There are a lot of open requests for CheckUser. These will be dealt with when they are come to in the open list. I've previously looked at least one of these requests and not found immediate socking from CU evidence, so stopped the investigation early to find clear cut cases that could be dealt with quickly. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 12:54, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
Can you please clarify me on the technical side. I saw that you performed CU on Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Mustafdesam. Is it like the same on others two. I mean no CU evidence? If there is no socking from CU evidence, what is the next step to do? Kindly guide me 111.92.78.247 (talk) 09:08, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
I have not looked at the CU evidence for either case. My comment was in regards to the last SPI you listed. These requests are in the queue and will be got to. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 09:18, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the response. I was wondering why CU is done quickly on some other cases such as Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Fangusu. The above listed cases are on queue for a long period of time (more than 2 weeks) whereas CU was completed on Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Fangusu the day the case was filed.
111.92.78.247 (talk) 09:48, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
This may be for many reasons, including whether the evidence is clear cut. With the case you mention just above, the case listed there was filed what we call pro forma. This means that the CheckUser ran a check and filed the case as paperwork. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 11:10, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

Requesting help / guidance

@Dreamy Jazz

At this linked discussion I was under impression two users are different but WP:SPI/Aronanki seem to have confirmed two accounts were one user. I think mention of those being socks at the article talk page discussion would be preferable to avoid confusion in mind of future participants. I am not sure what part their postings can be struck out. Requesting your help/ guide on either striking out or appropriate note in the said article talk page discussion. edits

So, just for my own edification -- I was not actually getting too close to editing in Arb/clerk territory? I'd been involved in a discussion about "enforced BRD" and had been surprised myself that we don't seem to have much in policy that's prominent or easily findable, thought maybe a couple of links might help, but was aware that Arb/clerk territory was possibly right next door. :) Valereee (talk) 16:52, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

@Valereee, in this case the page you were editing is used as a template on the contentious topic subpages and not on the official procedure page. As such, it's fine to edit this page and the contentious topic subpages as they are more akin to a FAQ which is primarily maintained by the clerks but otherwise fine for constructive editing by others.
In general, the line of getting too close to arb/clerk territory is when there is a editnotice or talk page banner saying only clerks / arbs should be editing the page. Otherwise being WP:BOLD to make constructive edits is fine, as if it's deemed to not be okay it can then be reverted as necessary. Thanks for these edits and happy editing, Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 17:15, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

{{AE sanction/topicban}} update request

DJ, I noticed that you and Callanecc had updated the {{AE sanction}} template to reflect the DS-> CTOP change. Could you do the same for {{AE sanction/topicban}}? Currently the topicban template fails to link to the appropriate arbcom decision properly (see, eg this manual fix by Bishonen) and I am hesitant to attempt the template update myself. Cheers. SPI

Hi DJ, you previously commented on Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Guns & Glory, in which you said that further evaluation was needed. That was close to a month ago, and I've not seen SPIs go on for that long, so I was wondering if you could either bring it to a close, or explain the issue that has kept it open for this long. Thanks. Loafiewa (talk) 04:31, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

@Loafiewa, there is quite a backlog of cases at WP:SPI (as evidenced by the notice at the top). As such, it just hasn't been got to yet. There is a case in the "checked" queue that has been open since April and some since May. It should hopefully not be much longer. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 10:11, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

A SPI need to be act on

Could you please look into the SPI case, mate? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/EramZuko As I’ve detected five accounts run by the same bloke and in one account he’s claiming to be the editor of Wikipedia. Upon checking, I’ve found no evidence of him as an editor, so technically he’s written in his user page to distract other users, innit.

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Community sanctions

Hi Dreamy Jazz. I've been working to improve the summary information at WP:GS and I hope you don't mind if I ask you a question or two.

  • In this edit you changed the community DS to CTOP, but I couldn't find any ArbCom or community decisions covering community DS. Is there a documented decision somewhere?
  • I'd also appreciate your thoughts on this.

Thanks and thanks also for contributing so much to the implementation of the new contentious topics system. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 19:53, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

@Daniel Quinlan, hi there. I've answered your second question on that talk page. With regards to the first, the community authorised discretionary sanctions were based on the ArbCom discretionary sanctions procedure. As such, once the WP:CTOP system replaced DS and because of Wikipedia:Contentious topics/2021-22 review § Name the mentions of discretionary sanctions were to be replaced with contentious topics.
Hopefully that answers your questions. Thanks and happy editing, Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 12:21, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello Dreamy Jazz,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Hey--I don't remember the names, no, but they showed up when I ran CU on Rovepashap and checked the various IPs. If I remember correctly those accounts did not have the same Vietnamese obsession, or at least not all of them. I don't know if it's a big deal either, but it does seem clear to me that this one is prolific; they opened up a can of new ones a day after I blocked a bunch. Drmies (talk) 00:56, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

@Drmies, after checking that account I think this might this be Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Belugajdm? The blocks I made had the WorldWar1989 case linked but the section was then moved to a new case. The prolific account creation would suggest a link as the Belugajdm case had loads of socks. 1RR question

Dreamy Jazz, would a request to create a "WP:ARB1RR" alongside WP:ARBECR require making a request to the Arbitration Committee or is that more of a clerk request?

There are three different 1RRs in WP:CT/A-I, WP:CT/TT, and WP:CT/GMO, but they appear to be equivalent. A shared definition would help simplify things. Also, multiple community sanctions currently reference WP:ARBPIA to incorporate its 1RR which is awkward and I'd like to enable future community sanctions and updates to have the option of picking from a menu of standard provisions (WP:CTOP, WP:ARBECR, and this one).

I believe a slightly tweaked version of the 1RR in WP:CT/A-I could cover them all without changing the meaning of any:

One Revert Restriction (1RR): Each editor is limited to one revert per page per 24 hours on any edits made to content within the area of conflict. If an [[WP:ARBECR|extended confirmed restriction]] is also enforced on the area, reverts made to enforce it are exempt from the 1RR. Also, the [[WP:3RRNO|normal exemptions]] apply. Editors who violate this restriction may be blocked by any uninvolved administrator.

That also adds a link to WP:3RRNO for clarity.

Note that WP:CT/TT would still need to have This restriction may be appealed at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Enforcement, with notifications to be posted, at a minimum, at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ireland and Talk:The Troubles. afterwards because that's unique to that case.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks! Daniel Quinlan (talk) 02:41, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

@Daniel Quinlan, it depends on where the shortcut would link to. If it was to be added to Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Procedures, this would need an agreement of the arbitrators. Therefore a request at WP:ARCA would probably make the most sense. If it was outside arbitration space (such as on Wikipedia:General sanctions or WP:1RR), then it wouldn't need a request.
As to your suggested wording, my thoughts are that it looks good to me except that Editors who violate this restriction may be blocked by any uninvolved administrator. isn't probably correct for just WP:CT/TT. This is because that 1RR is applied as a WP:CTOP restriction and as such the editor who violates this could be blocked, topic banned, interaction banned, or even have revert restrictions placed by an uninvolved administrator.
Hopefully that is useful and happy editing, Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 09:20, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, that is useful.
Is the 1RR in WP:CT/TT a restriction that can be applied by uninvolved administrators or is it a restriction that has been preemptively applied by the Arbitration Committee to the topic area? If it's the former, it seems superfluous because revert restrictions are already available. If it's the latter (and that is how I would read it in WP:CT/TT), it's confusing because all of the other editor restrictions in WP:CTOP are imposed by a single uninvolved administrator. Either way, it almost seems like a bug in WP:CT/TT. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 21:57, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
I agree that it is the latter. I say that because the administrator that responds to violations of the 1RR restriction could apply other restrictions to the editor to enforce it (such as blocking or topic bans). Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 23:07, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

So please before you drag my name for a potential discussion, please check the facts. Just because you dont agree with something, doesnt mean you can accuse people without evidence, this is an encyclopedia not a child's playground. Try at least to be professional user: RevampedEditor, because you itself are a sockpuppet so I would keep quiet I were you, otherwise I will request an investigation on your profile.
To the user:Dreamy Jazz, sorry for him to bother you I personally dont know him, just saw this accusation of the blue, just because of a supposed edit conflict, and please dont mind this situation or at least check it with open eyes, because the other user as some bias against my edit or at least territorial problems.
Thank in advance, Pinzunski (talk) 23:26, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

And now, :@Bbb23, after those baseless accusations, they resorted to anon editing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/77.249.58.62), for instance inserting in João Palhinha stuff about the Morocco national football team and Cristiano Ronaldo that has nothing to do with Mr. Palhinha. I, on the other hand, inserted the games he PLAYED IN at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and if you notice i still tried to reach a compromise with them in Mr. Palhinha's article, cleaning up instead of reverting.

If you are not a sock, Mr. :@Pinzunski, then i apologise. now maybe you can do the same to me. --RevampedEditor (talk) 00:40, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

@Drmies, care to weigh in here? Preposterous accusation, i already apologised should it be the case i'm mistaken (but the user's M.O. seemed familiar), hope to see something from the other side as well! Take care --RevampedEditor (talk) 00:51, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
  • Pinzunski said above that they are Dutch. The 77. IP is also Dutch (assuming it's not a proxy). AFAIK, Maritimc123 used pretty much only Portuguese IPs, so now I'm questioning my block. For the moment, I'll wait for DJ to comment on this. I'm happy to unblock if DJ thinks I was wrong.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:54, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
It seems that Drmies has been able to respond to this, so is there anything else I need to look at? Thanks, Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 00:10, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
It's kind of muddled now, actually. If possible, you might want to shed some light on whether Pinzunski is a sock of Maritimc123. If they are unrelated, or even unlikely, the only thing I would do is remove the tag from their userpage. At this point, they deserve to be blocked regardless of whether they are a Maritimc123 sock.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:16, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
Running CU on this account suggests that they had already created sleeper accounts before their block (since blocked) and were editing while logged out on a few occasions before their block. While logged-out editing and creating sleepers isn't necessarily always block-on-sight, it seems that (based on the edit below by an IP and not based on CU evidence) they have evaded their block to threaten legal action and as such much stay blocked regardless until such threats are retracted.
With respect to the relation to Martimc123, I would say that comparing IPs to IPs from the Martimc123 case it seems that CU suggests Red X Unrelated (different sides of the same continent with no proxy use seen). Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 14:35, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments. It's pretty much as I expected. I've removed the tag from the Pinzunski userpage. I think it's unlikely Pinzunski will be unblocked, at least not in the short term. All they've been doing is evading their block with IPs, and it wouldn't surprise me if they create another named account. Nor have they requested an unblock from their account.--Bbb23 (talk) 14:53, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
So now Im block based on purely accusations, great. Listen, I am not liking the course of action this is taking, if you dont agree to what I am writing just tell or discuss it on the talk page, and do not curse. You dont need to set up this theatre, to disagree with me. You want an apology, I will give it to you, after you unblock me, and you have until tonight, otherwise, there are going to be legal consequences, between all parties involved. OK, Im waiting. 145.44.98.85 (talk) 09:31, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

Me too (happy with an un-block) of course! I will apologise again to the user if need be, even if they do not return the favour. --RevampedEditor (talk) 00:57, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

  • Ooooooooh "RevampedEditor", it's you! I was wondering why I was called in here. Bbb23, I am familiar with this editor, and I believe I have a standing invitation to their house, with beer and olives provided. You're welcome to come too, I have no doubt. Hey, a penalty kick in extra time to beat the Greeks? I'll take it.
Anyway, I don't really know why you called me in here, Vasco, but I had a look and blocked what I think are a few unused sleeper accounts. I can not confirm this with any earlier socks because I don't have that data, but I have no reason to doubt Bbb's block of this user. There may be more range blocks that someone could place, but not me, and not tonight. Take care, Drmies (talk) 01:03, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
    • Thanks for the vote of confidence, Drmies, although I'm not sure that in this case I deserve it. I'll pass on the invitation. Sports? Beer? Olives? I don't think so. How about an opera fest with Peking duck?--Bbb23 (talk) 01:12, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
      • Bbb23, this user has had a few accounts but next time you might see them as an IP, and when you check geolocation you will know you want to go. Sure, we can eat duck there too. We'll eat all the foods and drink all the wine, and we'll teach you about soccer. Drmies (talk) 01:17, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

Yes :@Bbb23, i sometimes edit logged off because i'm just too lazy to log, besides i've nothing to hide/fear, 17 years here and i've never vandalised/disrupted anything (my summaries are another thing, Drmies can tell you a thing or two about those, not the best area for me i admit it). I also had two accounts before this one, i originally wanted to quit WP for good but then thought better and tried to start afresh (not with the best results i'm afraid, i'm as wiki-tired as can be). But no way i'm BrazilianDude70, i've already pinged him to comment here!

Take care everyone, sorry if i was an inconvenience with this situation (block and all)! --RevampedEditor (talk) 01:25, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

145.44.98.85: listen, if i did this wrongly i will surely apologise again, and will not mind if i instead get a block for my actions. To unblock you is not in my power, please understand that. Regarding João Palhinha, if you notice i relocated the style of play section to a proper section, no need to leave it also in intro; also, i removed the statement you wrote about him being "one of the best defensive midfielders" in the world, i just read the THREE sources you added entirely and those words never appear there OK? I am trying to work with you now (i should have done that before), i am not reverting you anymore, just composing the additions. --RevampedEditor (talk) 11:24, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

I didn't get much but RevampedEditor is not a sock of mine. We share the same interests here (football), but we are not the same person. Besides, I can't edit in two articles with two different accounts at the same minute, per here and [59]. Check out that I made an edit at Gustavo França and Portuguesa squad template at 13:49 on 23 December, while RE edited Jordi Amat at the same minute... I'm pretty sure that many other scenarios like this will pop up if someone dig a little deeper to find more "evidence". Cheers, BRDude70 (talk) 14:10, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

So, no match found it seems. I sincerely apologise to everyone for setting this into gear, I'll have no problem with an unblock if the other parties see it fit (i think they do not, due to the legal threats); last time i'm involved in one of these for sure, lesson learned!

Attentively --RevampedEditor (talk) 19:16, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

Request

@Dreamy Jazz, I hope you are doing well. Not sure how, but someone, after I sent them a kitten for some of the work they do, mentioned my real name here which I don't like. Could you please suppress the last two edits? Regards, ─ The Aafī (talk) 11:08, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

@TheAafi, hi there. I have removed this information. Happy editing, Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 22:10, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

Moderator Tools newsletter - Issue #1

Welcome to the inaugural Moderator Tools newsletter! We’ll aim to publish new issues whenever we have big new updates about the projects we’re working on.

PageTriage

PageTriage NewPagesFeed - October 2023

We’ve now wrapped up our work to support the English Wikipedia’s New Pages Patrol community by tackling some major technical debt in the PageTriage extension. The final project update gives an overview of all the work that we did over the past 6 months.

Automoderator

We’re currently working on a project called Automoderator, which will enable communities to automatically revert bad edits based on community-defined settings. We’re looking for input and feedback on our plans so far, and have a number of questions on topics we need patrollers and administrators to help us understand better. In addition to the overview and questions on the main project page, we now have two sub-pages with more specific information:

Automoderator - model testing tool screenshot
  • If you want to investigate Automoderator’s accuracy rate and check out how it would behave in practice, we’ve set up a testing process with data and scores so you can help us find new patterns we can take into consideration before Automoderator is deployed.
  • The measurement plan is the first draft of our plan to measure whether Automoderator is achieving its goals and not having negative consequences. Want to propose some data for us to capture to help evaluate this project? This is the place to go!

Other

Our team has also been working to ensure that software we’re responsible for is updated to support temporary accounts. We’ve made changes to PageTriage, Nuke, and The Wikipedia Library.

Although we have active engineering projects ongoing, we're always happy to chat about your community's content moderation tool needs - feel free to get in contact at Talk:Moderator Tools.

Sockpuppetry Case

Regarding, Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Rahmanumar4076, did you mean to indef the confirmed accounts? Thanks, Seawolf35 (talk - email) 02:51, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

It wasn't clear to me that the confirmed accounts had necessarily violated the sockpuppetry policy. As such, I left the case as there were other CU requests to deal with. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 14:55, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

My bad.

I thought I was helping sort out the user's sockpuppet accounts with my edits, I am sorry if they were disruptive in nature. GalaxyFighter55 (talk) 20:16, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Sure, no harm done. In future, if you want the tags updated it's probably best to check with a SPI clerk or checkuser. In this case, the user admitting to this could be doing it in an attempt to joe job as the blocked user may be claiming to be someone else to make it harder for that other user to appeal in the future. Tagging that link as "confirmed" could incorrectly lead a user later to believe that checkuser evidence was used to link them, even though it was just the user admitting to it.
