Santa Rosa Notable Resident Change

Mrs. Smith,

I noticed that you removed the addition of Arthur Leigh Allen from "Notable Residents" of Santa Rosa. His trailer was in the Sunset Trailer Park in Santa Rosa. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 214.42.179.178 (talk) 06:47, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

If and when Arthur Leigh Allen gets an article of his own (not just a redirect to Zodiac Killer#Suspects), then it'll make sense to add him to Santa Rosa, California—but not before. DoriTalkContribs 06:52, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

I understand your point of view, but doesn't he still qualify as a Notable person under Wikipedia's guidelines, considering he was mentioned in the movie, "Zodiac" as well as Robert Graysmith's books? One of Graysmith's books was almost entirely dedicated to proving that Arthur Leigh Allen was the Zodiac Killer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 214.42.179.178 (talk) 08:18, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Camacho Cigars Deletion

Hi Dori,

I just noticed that my article on Camacho was deleted for copyright infringement very soon after the new Camacho website was launched. I am the author for both the wiki article and the camacho website content in question for being copied. While I am not an employee of Camacho, I remain the author, and can also get any permission needed by Camacho. Being new to Wiki, I'm not sure as to what I need to do or get in order to get the article back up. I know we need to add the site as a reference now that it's launched with my content on it. Beyond that, what should I do? The research I did has left me pretty confused.

Thanks so much!

Hello DoriSmith. Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan article - reg

Hi DoriSmith, Article Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan is not an autobiography. I think you misunderstood only because the username of the person who edited the article is Dr.ng. But you should understand the subject of the article and editor are two difference people. I am an absolute stranger for him. Since “Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan” is my first article, I have created a username having a similarity with the name of the article. That is all. I have taken special interest in writing this particular article only because this is the article which has been deleted from the wiki for many times. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr.ng (talkcontribs) 00:42, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Welcome to Did you know...

Hello! I noticed that you've been reviewing a lot of nominations at the DYK suggestions page. Thank you for your help, and I hope you will continue to contribute! As you know, you don't need to be an administrator to review hooks or to move hooks to Preparation area, so your help is more than welcome.

You may already be familiar with the DYK rules by now, but in case you aren't, you can check out the official rules and the supplementary guidelines. You may also want to look into some useful tools that can allow you to review nominations more quickly: the Cut & Paste character counter is a helpful JavaScript to calculate the length of hooks, and DYKcheck is a script you can install on your own Wikipedia account for more heavy-duty verifying.

The best way to learn is by doing, but here is also a quick reference of the things to check for each hook you review:

Thanks again for your help! I look forward to continuing to work with you at DYK, and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask me or anyone else at DYK. Now get to reviewing some noms! George Ho (talk) 05:29, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

New Page Patrolling

Naming someone and calling them a 'goof ball' is an attack page and not a CSD A7, and must be deleted immediately. . Please take care with your patrolling. Thanks. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:26, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

This sounds to me like it's simply a case of you and I having different definitions of what "goofball" means, imo. I figure that if it's something I might call my husband, it's not an attack; YMMV. DoriTalkContribs 01:40, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Declined PROD on Flintco

Hi. I declined the PROD on Flintco - there are numerous GNews hits on the company. It needs to be rewritten by someone without a COI, but there is clearly enough for notability. Regards, GregJackP Boomer! 06:30, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Well, I can't say as I have a high opinion of it, but that's why my say-so alone isn't enough. DoriTalkContribs 01:50, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

COI contribs from Xylosmygame (talk · contribs)

I originally had a name that was based on my company. I was new to Wikipedia and did not realize I could not do this. That's fine. So I made a new username AS INSTRUCTED. Point being, I am an individual, a professional percussionist who is an active musician in Los Angeles. I personally interviewed Mr. Richards for approximately 6 hours about his collection. He wanted me to, and wants his collection and instruments to be on Wikipedia. The information is factual. It is entirely relevant that a big part of his Collection got sold. Mentioning that is not spam. That's very interesting to most percussionists in general. My username is not commercial. AND I DID WHAT I WAS TOLD, which was change my username so it didn't have commercial affiliation. So, I can't make an article about his collection? Really unfair. What is the problem here? You are preventing legitimate information from being shared on this site. Your redirection of anvils to the anvil page as a musical instrument is not correct, as these are really different in construction, shape, tuning and tone quality. --Xylosmygame (talk) 03:51, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

The problem isn't solely with your username—please see User:DoriSmith/onCOI. DoriTalkContribs 03:59, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Well, I'm not just editing an already existing article, so I can't recommend someone to add something to it. I'm creating articles. So now what?--Xylosmygame (talk) 05:36, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
When someone contributes to the Coca Cola page, are you so strict? Although we'd like to believe everyone is objective, Coca Cola has thousands of employees and representatives, it's easy to contribute without mentioning affiliation. I was honest about it and did this out of simply being green to Wikipedia. The fact of the matter is that I have this information because of who I am and what role my industry happens to play in all of this. I'm in an original and unique position. The difference between me/ my subject matter and Coca Cola is that my contribution is a niche of a niche. This information about this collection, and specific, one of a kind instruments will not be posted by anyone else because no one else has the knowledge about it like I do and the subject himself. This is also not pop culture, and even within the field of percussion is quite specialized. I am an expert in this field. How else will the info get out there?
You say this is a conflict of interest as if someone else can go post about this with their knowledge, but the only person who can do that is the subject himself. Yet the premise of Wikipedia is shared, credible information, and I have both of those. I'm trying to share information about a major musician and instruments which were an important piece of film and music history that was only recorded in writing because I took six hours interviewing and 20 hours writing it up (yes there's more where that came from). You want a credible source and references and I provided them. And I have more. But I never got to that point.
Your re-direction of tuned anvils to anvil page further proves my point of how the parts and details of this collection must be handled by only those "in the know. " That is misinformation which you provided (rather hastily, if I might add. And no, it's not the biggest deal because it's not like it was on the CPR page and anyone died because of this).
But it does show how easy it is to make mistakes on this endless catalogue of information known as Wikipedia, and so I ask you why you had to simply delete my work instead of asking for a revision. Even though its for common reference, is our goal for Wikipedia to be watered down, lackluster information? So often, the media and public plop a whole bunch of generalities, catch phrases, and mystique into the collective bucket of music. There's a number of reasons why tuned anvils was simply not put in the anvil article, all of which has to do with the specs about this instrument. I have a lot of interesting, detailed information to share!
Again, I ask you to reconsider and please undo. What's at stake here with your perceived COI issue is slight compared to what can be gained with my contributions. --Xylosmygame (talk) 22:49, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

To take your issues one-by-one:
  • Did you read the page I linked to (User:DoriSmith/onCOI) and the articles it links to? If not, please do so; I think it would clear up a lot of your misconceptions.
  • I'm creating articles. So now what? If you want to create a new article about a topic in which you have a COI, please consider using Articles for creation—that's its purpose (well, one of them, at least).
  • When someone contributes to the Coca Cola page, are you so strict? Are you referring to "you" as in Wikipedia in general, or "you" as in me, personally? The former, absolutely. The latter is irrelevant; I don't make the rules here.
  • How else will the info get out there? Not through Wikipedia! I recommend that you read No original research.
  • You want a credible source and references and I provided them From Wikipedia's point of view, though, you are not and cannot be a reliable source. If a third party writes about your research, that's another matter entirely—although I'd still recommend that you not be the person to add that source to an article, either.
  • Your re-direction of tuned anvils to anvil page further proves my point Actually, I redirected Tuned Anvils to Anvil#Musical instruments—which is about tuned anvils as musical instruments. And if you read that section, it's clear that anvils have been used as musical instruments in famous works for several centuries up to the present day. Got a reliable source that says your metal pipes are better known?
  • is our goal for Wikipedia to be watered down, lackluster information? If by that you mean based solely on verifiable and reliable neutral third party sources, then I guess the answer is "yes."
  • I have a lot of interesting, detailed information to share! Then I suggest, please, that you find an interested reporter and outlet to share them with. WP isn't the place for you to write your stories.
  • Again, I ask you to reconsider and please undo Well, you've already undone my changes, so yes, I guess I will undo the current versions.
As I said on the page I recommended you read, the right place to be asking these questions is at WP:COIN, the Conflict Of Interest Noticeboard. They've got much more experience with this than I do, and can offer you more specific instruction.
I'm sorry you're finding Wikipedia frustrating. FWIW, it's annoying to me, too, that I can't update articles for my friends, or topics in my field of expertise. But when you think about it, it actually does make sense; otherwise, WP would be full of articles about how global warming is a major communist conspiracy and the like! Hi there - I was working on the improvisation news article when it was changed and multiple sections were taken out - I have been working on adding outside source information as well as internal links - would it be possible to have the text restored without the self-cites? I have a busy weekend but will try to conform the information this weekend. Thank you! --Thetheatrenerd (talk) 06:24, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

From the viewpoint of someone with a lot of Wikipedia experience: the article looks like a gang of meatpuppets is doing their best to get it deleted by making it as fluffy and promotional as possible. Is that really what you want to accomplish?
Are you affiliated with Improvisation News? If you are, you shouldn't be editing the article at all. If not, sloooooowwwwww down. Start from scratch. Find solid sources, and then add only the information you found there. Don't go back to old versions of the article; they were a mess. If anything, more of the fluff should go. DoriTalkContribs 06:31, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
Okay, thanks - I removed all self-citing and will try to pare it down to just facts... pardon the revert - I had just added some citations that I didn't want to have to recreate. Thank you for the pointers - I will work more on it this weekend - feel free to flag away, but can the general sections be left? I promise I'll work on it, and spoke to a friend (who is getting her masters in improv history) about helping as well. Thank you :)--Thetheatrenerd (talk) 06:35, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
I think you're confused. I'm the one who created (and keeps rolling back to) the version without the self-cites; you're the one who keeps adding them back in. Here's the diff. You've added nothing useful; all the links you've added are either self-cites or otherwise unreliable sources. Your friend is welcome to help out so long as both you and she have nothing to do with improv comedy personally or professionally. Somehow, I doubt that that's the case. DoriTalkContribs 06:43, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Apologies, I meant no offense, thanks for the clarification and pointers--Thetheatrenerd (talk) 07:12, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Please help me with the undeletion of the SpiderGraph chart article.

Dear Dori,

I can use your help! On 25 April, you made a suggestion to me on the "Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion/SpiderGraph chart" page, that I thought could be a continuing page for the AfD discussion page, that I didn't know had been abruptly closed before I had a chance to reply to some of the voting REs confused comments. You were right, I didn't know the Process! (and still don't)

What does it mean to be the Deletion Nominator? If you look at Glrx's User talk page, you'll see that I thought Glrx was in charge of the discussion because he was the Nominator. So after the discussion closed, I continued to direct comments to him. I later noticed that he was making incorrect accusations, but when I proved him wrong, he wasn't acknowleging them in the discussion or passing the truth back to the voting REs to correct their miss-impressions. Not having all the facts (held back by Glrx), they voted to delete. Along came Ryan (Rjd0060) and deleted the article per process, not knowing that Glrx had held back information. I directed a DRV (soon to be a Grievance?) to Glrx because he was the culprit and he directed me back to Rjd0060. How do I get the true facts known, expose Glrx for what he is, and get the article undeleted?

Thanx in advance for your help, Gregory L. Chester 23:44, 19 June 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by GregLChest (talkcontribs)

Your advice

Dear Dori, Thanks for editing a page I have contributed. I have added secondary references to the page for Sofia's Last Ambulance as well as links from another wikipedia page. What else do I need to get rid of the tags (need for references, notability, orphan) on top of the page? Would you know? Thanks for your information! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mimivanilli (talkcontribs) 15:05, 21 June 2012‎

I removed {{notability}} and {{linkrot}} from Sofia's Last Ambulance, but sadly, one incoming link isn't really enough to remove the {{orphan}} tag. I also added the {{uncategorized}} tag, as the article currently doesn't have any categories that describe the article. It's looking much better now, though—keep up the good work! EditCounterOptIn.js nominated for speedy deletion

I'm not sure why this was nominated for speedy deletion. A Google search shows that several users have EditCounterOptIn.js opt-in pages... One's Edit Counter can be accessed from the link at the bottom of the My Contributions page, but I saw a suggestion that creating a user page with this js script would make it easier to find. The problem is that, along with creating it in your user space, you also created it in the main Wikipedia space. That is, User:LittleBenW/EditCounterOptIn.js is fine, but LittleBenW/EditCounterOptIn.js isn't. It's the latter I sent up for CSD. DoriTalkContribs 04:51, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Dear sir,

this is in reference to the article named Manit Dani. the link are :

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1120108/jsp/graphiti/story_14976271.jsp

on this page please read the article on manit dani Or, look at Manit Dani an aspiring musician and guitar teacher. So far he has only made small amounts from his videos but the money is starting to trickle in slowly and steadily. The 22-year-old has more than 5,000 subscribers (followers) and has made over 200 short videos on YouTube explaining how to play different songs.

Dani, who’s an engineering student from Panchkula, has composed five songs so far and has released one of them digitally. More importantly, he plays the role of online guitar tutor for the YouTube masses.

“When I was a beginner I always looked for online tutorials for help as I didn’t have time for a personal tutor. Somehow I practiced all these years and finally started making online tutorials for beginners and intermediate players,” he says.

please read and add the link

thanks in advance . — Preceding unsigned comment added by 182.68.55.58 (talk) 05:43, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

I always check linked refs before deciding to remove them. Sadly, it appears that no one is reading the link before deciding to re-add it. In this particular case, it's been used (several times) as the source for the claim that Dani’s video with the most views is the one which shows him playing "Gulabi Ankhein." However, it's easily checked that that source never uses the phrase "Gulabi Ankhein"—so out it goes. If you want to use that source to cite something it does support, be my guest! EasyCloud Errors

EasyCloud is a trademarked and patented invention. It is a combination of 3 REAL Technologies that are all 3 named on Wikipedia. These are as follows: Infrastructure As A Service, Platform As A Service and Software As A Service. If you know anything about cloud computing, you will know that EasyCloud just released the first IPSaaS platform in the business. Also, if you check their website and press, it says its a Patent-Pending, Trademarked and Copyrighted technology that is backed by Rackspace. What i was saying on the talk page was I was going to write more about IPSaaS technology. I myself did not create the technology or have any affiliation to EasyCloud other than the fact that I am a tech and political journalist on Twitter "@stormkrow" that has Tweeted about them before. Also to note: I feel this article is very relevant (once finished) because IPSaaS decreases server build times, literally, by hours. I have tried this technology myself. Not only that, I built my own IPSaaS platform for my future blog. Thats why I was going to take the time tonight to write this article. It was my first wiki article, but I felt it was relative and couldn't believe it wasn't listed! I have worked on diagrams all night for this and was planning to submit it as a page titled "IPSaaS" and I was going to revise the EasyCloud page. Since this is a real technology already in existence that improves on a past technology, I feel this is due some type of consideration. Furthermore, after further research on the founders of this company, they have participated in several platinum selling music projects and they have the interview and graphic design to prove it. I was going to write a Wikipedia article on the CEO as well. After watching many rap interviews, featuring the CEO, it is obvious that he is a very important person in the hip hop business, to this very year. You can find rappers praising his marketing abilities and the jobs he did on several platinum selling records. I feel this needs to be considered for an article. If I'm wasting time, writing about a real technology for wikipedia... then tell me what is journalism coming to and I won't bother. On the other hand, I have done alot of research on this and would love to at least start the article for a technology that will be around for at least a few years, just like IaaS, PaaS and SaaS. These are all billion dollar vertical markets that definitely deserve attention. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.219.149.159 (talk) 05:15, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Also as a writer, I would like to credit myself with breaking down this technology into words, which the company who sells it, definitely won't do. I wanted to break this down for everyone to do on their own or for themselves. That should be enough proof that I don't have any affiliation with the company. Can I please be guided through the process so that I can write future tech pages on wikipedia?
Thanks, Lance Mitchell
Also: Inside the article, I attached my own freelance writing release, that I wrote myself. EasyCloud did not make me release that information. I did it on my own, just as any other freelance writer would, that is looking for work. Call my methods old but they work for me :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by LanceMitchell88 (talkcontribs) 22:40, 26 June 2012‎

Adequate-Protein Diet

Hello Dori,

I'm Bsoengas. Nice to talk with you.

I uploaded the definition "Dieta proteinada" on the Spanish version of Wikipedia some months ago. Yesterday I tried to upload the English version of the same content, but the whole definition was redirected to "Very-low-calorie diet". It's true that a protein diet is one type of very-low-calorie diet, but it's not exactly the same. I'd like to keep the "Adequate-protein diet" explanation, which is just a translation from the Spanish version, and also to lead the definition of "Very-low-calorie diet", which is in the text, to the same definition in English, like you did yesterday.

Let me know your opinion about it.

Thank you so much! Kind regards,

Different language wikipedias have different criteria for content. In this particular case, I didn't see any sources cited that mentioned the article subject that weren't from the company itself. Feel free to try again, if and when you've found verifiable and reliable independent third party sources with significant coverage. DoriTalkContribs 06:42, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
